(15:22) The total solar eclipse (Aug 21 2017) occurred while I was on Baron Pass, so I experienced 2 full minutes of darkness as I was in the middle of the path of totality. Amazing!

There's more to hiking the Sawtooth Mountains than just the Alice / Toxaway loop. The Sawtooths offer some great off-trail hiking, remote and secluded lakes that are excellent for backcountry fishing, and outstanding high country backpacking opportunities through the whole range.

It's fucking amazing out there. I've been on 3 trips out there from when I lived in Boise and I could not get enough of the Sawtooths. So beautiful it makes one ache. It was every trail was our foray, like no one had ever been there, or it had been a long while, anyway. Great stuff, Famous.

Hiking doesn't need a soundtrack, especially a loud, noisy irritating one in such a peaceful setting, which often interfered with your talking so that I couldn't understand you.
That being said, your hike alternated between gorgeous scenery and rocks, rocks and more rocks. I don't think I've ever seen so many rocks. I don't know if the Sawtooth Mountains are part of the Rocky Mountains or not, but they surely could be with so many loose rocks.
I've viewed a lot of hikes but this is the first one that went off-trail. Very cool. I was surprised there were so many lakes. In spite of the music, I enjoyed your hike and commentary and will probably check out your other hikes.
At my age, I won't likely be able to get out and do what you do. At any rate, there aren't any places where I live that rival the northwest for beauty.
As a child, I lived in the Idaho Panhandle and have loved it the few times I've been able to get back there. One of my favorite drives was from southern Idaho straight (more or less) north to Coeur d'Alene. Coming down Fourth of July Pass was pretty awesome, too.

I have lived in the area since the 1970s, before there was an SNRA. Ten Lake Basin really demarcated the “wild” wilderness area from the popular areas like Imogene Cramer and Baron Lakes (There are several lakes named Baron andGoat). I didn’t think I’d ever see Packrat and War Bonnet Lakes again except from the air. At 75, my hikes are limited to Toxaway, Edna, and Alice Lakes, but I’m grateful. Just wanted to thank you for taking me back once more to my former haunts. I never thought I would visit them again. Time to watch the whole video again with my frayed collection of 40 year old topo maps. Thank you.

I agree, epic Cinematic Masterpiece! I am a native of Idaho. My husband and I many times, took almost the same route as you did, 12 days. We camped longer at certain Lakes. Should have went swimming, washed off. COLD, you come back up screaming. Lol. Rocks are brutal on the ankles and knees. Yet, so worth it. Thank you for such a beautiful cinematic Adventure. I haven't been on for a while. My husband has passed. He was Military Proud. His ashes are spread over the sawtooths, and many lakes that we use to go to. He loved it. Most of my photos are fading. So, again awesome hike, epic Cinematic perfection. Our son now climbs there. At beginning of video did I hear you say Boy-zee? Lol. Its Boy-see. Its such a beautiful State. Please video more Redfish Lake is breath taking in itself. Thank you.

Hey, that was great! It was as if I were hiking again. Gorgeous scenery, a place that I have never been. I still can't believe how many lakes are riddled through there and only saw it when I looked at it from aerial maps. I will be sharing with some friends your video. We are from the Coeur d'Alene Area and I have hiked a lot of places around here. Probably the one thing that I will miss the most. Anyway I'm two years into being a quadriplegic now and I miss it so much. I know I'll never be able to do it again but i'm going to send some friends that way. I thought for sure you would capture more wildlife than just two deer! Killer pictures and what a great time to be out there.

Last summer we started at Pettit lake then hiked past Farley to toxaway where we camped. Next day we say jokes up sand mountain pass and passed rendezvous and Edith lakes and looped back to toxaway. The following day we went up snowy side pass and hiked passed twin lakes and camped at Alice lake. Last day we hiked down back to Pettit lake

Although I am very late to the game in commenting on this video........I want to congratulate you for all of the cross country trekking you did in the Sawtooth Mtns. that provide us with vistas very few have ever seen. A lot of very difficult and semi-dangerous hiking you did to show us some of the most stunning scenery the Sawtooths have to offer. I speak from experience. I have done 2 week long trips in the northern Sawtooths and trips in the southern Sawtooths, but most of my hikes were following trails. Thank you so much for going back off the trail and showing everyone some of the best that the Sawtooth's have to offer. This is an absolute gem of a video.

@@SeekingLost In regards to the animal tracks in the snow in the unnamed area, I wonder if they are wolverine. ~~~ As much as you love hiking high, which includes a lot of rock, you could be Rock Famous! :-)
You know, I originally thought that was a possibility but I think they're too small and don't really show the claw marks(I googled "wolverine tracks in snow"). My best guess is marmot. If you google "marmot tracks in snow" it looks pretty close. Rock Famous eh... we'll see if it catches on :)

Thanks for the virtual tour of the Sawtooths! I have an opportunity to spend some time in the area next summer and this vid is helping me get a bit more familiar with the area. As a backyard astronomer the solar eclipse was frosting on the cake.

Thanks Amy! The Sawtooths are definitely a "top tier" hiking destination in my opinion. I'm hoping to get back into the Sawtooths on a huge route I'm creating through Utah, Nevada, Eastern Oregon and Idaho. And yeah the pack was no fun... I swear, the first couple miles are always the hardest. This was one of those trips where I brought a few more luxuries than normal, but no regrets!
@@SeekingLost I totally agree how the first couple miles are always the hardest. Let me know if you have any specific destinations/trails/areas you could suggest in the Sawtooth Range. If not, I'll probably just grab a map and pick whichever route has the most lakes! haha (that's typically how I do it)
@@AmyRoutt I like your system to find which route to hike haha. Check out Baron lake at 18:18 on, that was one of my favorite on-trail lakes on this hike. That would mean starting from Redfish lakes probably. Also Cramer Lakes. A classic hike here, maybe the most popular, is the Alice/Toxaway loop. It leaves out of the Pettit Lake TH and is about 18 miles. There's several trailheads on the east side of the range along ID-75 (beautiful drive too)

Haha good ol' hanging valley. Perfect place for a hammock hang :) Looking back, this was a damn good trip. I may have cried a bit too as I reached the trailhead. This is one place I can't wait to get back to!

This is a great video. Thanks for making it. I like the comments about forest fires. He makes them as what they really are, a natural part of the ecosystem. I even enjoy the comment he makes about falling and cutting his hand, it makes the journey seem real to me. Oh, and the bugs! I don't like the music, though. It's too loud and too jarring. I would prefer hearing the quiet all around him.
All that noise during the eclipse would just kill it for me, a bit of solitude would be needed to enjoy this experience.
I agree, it was a bit of a bummer to get all the way up to that pass to find about 15 other people there. I didn't really have a choice though, I busted my ass to get up there in time and didn't have any other options. Truth be told, I had another route planned that would have put me on an unnamed pass, and would have guaranteed solitude. However, the morning I left Cramer Lakes, I realized making it to that pass from where I was just wasn't going to happen, not enough time. So, I adjusted my route on the fly and came here to Baron Pass instead. And good thing too, because my day 7 route ended up being what I would have done on eclipse day, and it would have been beyond impossible to reach a high point in time for the eclipse. So in the end, I'm just thankful I got to see the eclipse at all.

SL, Another gem that I've already watched at least once. I've just referred back to it. My son and I are flying into Bozeman in a few weeks and had planned to drive down to the Winds threw the park and do a few days, then camp/hike in Yellowstone for 3-4 days on the way back to Bozeman. Given the devastation in the park, I'm shifting gears. So after the Winds we're gonna head to the Sawtooth's for 3-4 days. I know you make your own trial much of the time, but wanted to reach out for any suggestions you may have as far as routes given our time line. You're a killer and I love your style!! Cheers FBD

What an epic trip! My son lives up in Council, so I need to add the Sawtooths to my list of things to do when I go up for a visit. Love the off-trail lakes you visited. Some of them are so beautiful! Bummer about that scratch on your lens - is that a GoPro? Your photos and video from the eclipse are outstanding - actually through the whole video! I don't blame you for stopping early to camp at that lake @18:45. Wow. @23:23 - I think I would have sat down and cried seeing that steep route. Seriously impressed with what you accomplished on your route - especially with how heavy your pack was. Beast mode for sure!
Ooo yeah you need to take advantage of that close access to the sawtooths! Hope you make it out there sometime,and hopefully with less than 50lbs 😊

Went there at the end of June 2019 and absolutely fell in love with the Sawtooth’s… love how you went off trail and found such beautiful “ honey holes” …. I will say I was confused to when coming up from Toxaway and was at the pass . I missed the trail going up snd over to Edith lake .. there was still lot of snow at that time in higher elevations but had to bushwhack and went back down off the pass and around back to Edith where I made my 2nd nights camp . I’ll definitely be heading there again !!
Oh just like to comment on your CDT videos… my fav was def the Winds high route video … especially after you past knife edge glacier thru continental glacier.. been there twice but the High Route is definitely my next trip going there … great job!!

Great video! I’ve spent a lot of time peakbagging in the Sawtooths so I know exactly what you were dealing with. The Sawtooth scree and boulder fields are no joke! The bushwhacking at lower elevations can be intense as well. Anyway, I have a few Sawtooth videos on my channel if you are interested...

There were definitely a few scary moments on this hike! I really do want a Garmin InReach, but not until I can use the same 24k Garmin topos on it I currently use on my Oregon 450. Garmin recently acquired DeLorme who developed the InReach, so I was hoping they make some changes to the unit but not holding my breath. I think Garmin is using some pretty antiquated technology, especially in the unit's display and storage categories, but when you have no competition I guess you can keep making crappy products. Sorry had to rant a little about Garmin.

the sawtooths are my favorite range to backpack. Its spectacular. I cant believe you didnt have an InReach or something. For a trip that I wouldnt think about backpacking with out one if i was alone
They really are spectacular. Sounds like you've been lucky enough to visit more than I have (just once so far). I'd like to get an InReach someday but Garmin just bought the technology from Deloreme and I'm waiting for them to improve the product a bit before I drop that kind of money on one. If it can function as a GPS unit it would be worth it, but it's just not there yet (with Garmin 24k topo maps). Hopefully Garmin invests some money into that product, or a real competitor comes along and forces them to upgrade their ancient technology. Sorry I could go on and rant about Garmin for a while haha

Definitely a couple scary moments. It's tedious, just got to slow down and take your time. It also helps to enter these kind of situations earlier in the day so you don't have to worry about making it out before nightfall!
Now I know what it looks like up on top of Greylock Mtn.! We hunt there around Atlanta, ID right at the gateway to the Sawtooth Wilderness. Very rugged country!

Great photography and video but not a big fan of people that say if I get hurt up here and I'm by myself it's over! No kidding when I was 7 years old my dad taught me to always hike with a buddy ! and at least have some GPS guidance system if you are hiking! But otherwise love the video sawtooth mountains are gorgeous!
I had a GPS. But no Sat Phone like Garmin InReach. Keep in mind, I would never be able to go on any of these hikes I do if I were limited to hiking with a buddy. The handful of friends I do have that hike don't want to go off trail, can't get this much time off, etc. I always say, it's better to go alone than not at all!
That is one heckuva backpacking trip. You have a lot of guts, I gotta say. Making your own trails! Is that bear country? With all those fish and the smell of cooked fish , it makes me wonder.
Hey Jeff, thanks for watching! It's black bear country for sure. I didn't see any signs of bear out there though. Grizzlies are expanding south from Yellowstone into the Wind River Range (have been over the past several years), and there's no reason to believe the same expansion isn't possible elsewhere. There are grizzlies along the Idaho/Montana border (I saw prints there on my CDT thru hike this year), and in the future I wouldn't be surprised to hear about grizzly expansion into Idaho. But my guess is, they'd find the Frank Church area more appealing with less visitors.
And it's so much fun to make your own trail! I personally love the planning aspect of backpacking trips, and creating the route. You're basically guessing sometimes at which routes are doable and which aren't, but that's an added element of adventure that you usually don't get on the main trails!
@@SeekingLost You certainly do like adventure. maybe it was partly the camera angle or the type of lens, but some of those trails on the side of mountains had such a sheer drop off! You were so matter of fact about it. Very calm 😄
@@jeffstone28 The camera angle definitely exaggerates the steepness at times. There were a couple of clips that look like an optical illusion haha. I can remove the fish eye effect from the gopro footage while editing, but then you wouldn't see any of the slope in some cases. I just left it be to show the slope, even if it is an exaggerated view at times. And trust me, my heart was pounding on some of these slopes!

@@SeekingLost I'm a native Idahoan. Yes, this is bear country. Yes, grizzly bears are possible, but not likely to be an issue. The will smell you from miles away, and possibly see you from some distance, though their vision is not good. But you will see them, but not before they smell you. The grizzlies go up to these altitudes only in autumn to turn stones and eat the protein -rich moths. After that they hibernate. This time of year, they are feeding on mushrooms, berries, carcasses. If you want to be afraid, worry about humans with guns. They kill more people than bears, bigfoot and falls.

Very cool, that is definitely a spot you don't hear much about! They've bene on my radar for a little while, I would love to include them in a long route I am planning but they are just so far east compared to everything else I had planned. Hope you have a blast out there!

Hello Seeking. Thanks for posting this. I hiked the Petit-Alice lake loop last September (2019) and was blown away by the beauty there. Ironically, I am currently planning on September return this year for a 7-9 day hike throughout the Sawtooths, similar to what you did but ON trail. I too will be taking my fly rod so I can earn extra calories from fish. Have many questions regarding if you used Bear canister, how many calories did you estimate per day for, which gps did you use???...among a few. I have a 91 mile route sketched, easier trekking because of trail use. Any advice is welcome. Have 2 years backcountry experience, but this will be my first 5 or more night excursion so am open to suggestions. Anyway, thanks again for the post. Sweet, I'll be in the Sawtooths myself late July. I don't have the rod and reel handy for reference, but I bought a rod that is maybe 5 sections, and the sections collapse into a piece below it that is slightly larger, if that makes sense... in other words, it breaks down to about 16 inches or so. I just attach a small reel, basically the smallest reel you can get. 6 or 8 pound line is probably good enough. I use spoons and spinners mostly, like cleos and panther martins, but also had a lot of success on flies, using a "bubble". The bubble looks like a bobber, it fills with a little water, and your line goes through it... give you weight to chuck flies on a spinning rod. Most folks seem to fish exclusively with flies, but this is more versatile IMO. The best lakes are the least visited lakes, that are also somewhat large. Good luck out there!
GREAT video, awesome narration, and inspiring scenery! But dude - take it from an old hiker with lots of plates & screws installed; if you are going to do this solo, get an In-reach or SPOT! (PLEASE).
It had been on my list then but was waiting for garmin to combine the satellite messenger feature with GPS in one unit. They finally did, but was disappointed with the gps functionality of the 66i. Sold it and got the inreach mini. Doesn't work well in deep canyons though, gotta try not to get injured there!

You can export the GPX file to then import into your own new caltopo route where you can edit and save for yourself. Caltopo is great, I love it!
Really enjoyable video to watch! May I pick your brains about what battery and charging setup you had for this kind of excursion? I'm planning one myself for about this amount of time and need to know how to keep my equipment going (Samsung S-10 and GoPro 7 Black)
Sorry for the late reply. I carried an Anker 20000 mAh portable battery (amzn.to/2J0X5Xy). This should be plenty for a week long hike for a phone and GoPro. I used mine for up to 10 days (Wind River Range on the CDT in 2018) to charge phone, gopro, gopro gimbal, and camera. I used the Anker battery 165 days straight on the CDT, it worked flawlessly with no issues. Enjoy your adventure!
That one blurry spot right in the middle I kept seeing...
This was the first hike I used the GoPro with my EVO SS gimbal, and the GoPro needs to be mounted without the protective case. So, I found a clear protector cap/filter that mounts over the GoPro lens only (not encasing the entire GoPro body). The plastic used on this lens is not as resilient as the plastic on the typical GoPro case, and quickly developed a scuff mark which I didn't notice until I returned home. I bought a different brand for my CDT thru hike, and that seemed to be better quality. I just need to keep an eye on the lens protector and keep spares on hand in case they get scuffed up, which seems to be inevitable the way I hike. That blurry mark really bothered me!
@@SeekingLost I feel you bro...there's been many times in my early photography years where I had taken the perfect shot only to realize later I had forgotten to remove my lens cap! Duh

Yup this was the last "big" hike I did before the CDT. I know, I know... Still no emergency beacon, I was waiting for Garmin to get their act together and add proper navigation capability to their InReach devices, which they finally have. So that'll be my next big purchase. Can't wait to get back out to the Sawtooths!
fabulous video and gorgeous landscape. I personally would prefer not to have any music because it would be more immersive for me. Found the music distracting but I might be in a minority here. Just like it quiet in these landscapes...thanks for sharing

Hey thanks! I used music from envato elements and soundstripe. Monthly fee, but it was great when I did the CDT videos because I had a ton to knock out at once.
