Better Than Ezra was one of the most underrated bands of the '90s. Several good songs ... and part of the funniest bit Norm MacDonald ever did on SNL. King of New Orleans is BTE's best song.
BTE was one of the greatest rock bands of the 90’s and into the 00s. Their album ‘Closer’ was brilliant from opening to finish. ‘Good’, ‘Closer’, ‘Misunderstood’, ‘Rosealia’, ‘Recognize’, & the hit ‘Extra Ordinary’ were standouts. Super, super underrated considering many of the overrated 90’s alt rock.
Man, I haven’t heard this song in forever! Used to love it in college (or maybe just after, if it came out the year I graduated) but then completely forgot about it. I never understood the meaning, but absolutely loved the sound. Thanks for bringing it back!
I know.. this came out midway thru high school.. the whole emo scene. I loved their other song A Lifetime. We used to go to these concerts all the time, it was so cheap (compared to now).
Anton, I don't know if you know the song "Collide" by Howie Day? It is from 2003. Was a pretty popular song. Well, the singer of this band Better Than Ezra, he wrote that song "Collide". In fact he has written a bunch of songs for other people including Taylor Swift.
My daughter and I were driving through Indiana during election season about 10 years ago. For miles and miles there were signs everywhere that said VOTE FOR EZRA. After seeing probably 100 signs she said " I'm going to move here and if he runs again I'm going to run against him and my signs are going to say "BETTER THAN EZRA"
Ahhh... making me reminisce about my college days when I discovered alt/modern rock which seemed to have exploded out of nowhere. I had been listening to both pop/Top 40 and country music for years, but discovering 90s alternative rock caused me to leave country behind because I just didn't feel I had the time to devote to 3 different genres. Better Than Ezra didn't have many hits, but "Desperately Wanting" as well as earlier hits "Good" (they burst into popularity with this one) and "Rosalia" were their biggest. Anton, I really feel what you say about what you like about 90s music and how modern music is often so lacking in those qualities. I truly miss how music of the past used to make me feel. I still discover a small amount of music that I enjoy, but it's a fraction of what it used to be.
You used to think that you didn't like 90s alt rock. It's one of my favorite periods and genres. Well, ZooTv and Achtung Baby were 90s, those were a bit outside the norm of alt rock as you've seen a bit of. But yeah, a lot of alt rock in the 90s was really good. M20, BTE, Goo Goo Dolls and FF (I know you don't like them but they need another chance), Pearl Jam, Green Day, RHCP, Stone Temple Pilots, Counting Crows, Collective Soul, Pixies, and so. many others - those just off the top of my head - were so good in the 90s, and then the sound expanded and diverged into more rock or more indie into the 00s. So many more you need to hear....
This whole album (Friction, Baby) is phenomenal! King of New Orleans, This Time of Year, Return of the Postmoderns, all standout tunes! Their previous album, Deluxe is even better, if possible... You must listen to Cry in the Sun... If you like evocative storytelling, this song will sweep you away... So will Southern Girl... Great reaction!
Listening to some of your remarks, I believe "Shattered Heart" by The Warning might resonate with you. Being a band best seen Live, I recommend their performance @ Dakota Bar. The song is off their first LP, _XXI Century Blood._
Better than ezra " IN THE GOOD". Not just (good) its a different song. Better than Ezra was a very popular band in the 90s so we're Our Lady Peace, Third eye Blind, S.T.P just to name a few.
oh god, you mention autotune. It's killed music as far as I'm concerned. It's killed it for me at least for modern music or for anyone who uses it. I don't mind if it's done well and very very limited. But, I've seen videos of a guy who analyses singing voices in songs where they've been snapped to the pitch and those who haven't. It's just wild how autotune can absolutely suck the emotion out of a singer's voice. I, at least don't like a voice or vocal because it's perfect pitch wise, but rather because it expresses how the singer is feeling.
Love these guys, they are phenomenal! I've got tixkets to see them and Train in August in Richmond, VA!! So excited!

“At The Stars” is my favorite by Better Than Matchbox 20.

Defiantly most slept on band of the 90s and just hit after hit. They were popular for sure in the 90s but should have been giants
Great & thorough analysis!
Love this band. Very nostalgic of course.
I absolutely love BTE!! Huge collection of wonderful songs. Check out more of them!
OMW I was listening to this and other Better Than Ezra songs 2days ago driving home from my holiday in Cape Town. Such an underrated song and band. ❤
This is absolutely about fraternity hazing/initiation. Homies went through it at LSU.
I really missed those days. 90s Alt/Modern Rocks are the best.
Omg yessss! Such a good song. I feel so many emotions listening to this.
You need to listen to "Good" and "A Lifetime" by these guys!

This band us amazing. Been relistening to their albums reminiscing about the 90s of course. 😎🎶
From my home town of Baton Rouge. To your point about modern music lacking depth, Rosalia is an amazing song (but it's about physical abuse).
I love it she loves it we love it
A very Tempe Arizona/90s sound ... They would have fit right in at Long Wongs w/the Gin Blossoms.
My favorite Better than Ezra track is In The Blood. Check it out.
Yes
At The Stars is my favorite BTE song. 🙂

How can you be the age I presume you to be and NEVER heard this song? I dont believe.
I'm 28 and had never heard of it. Don't care if you don't believe me but it's the truth.
