I made videos showing how bad the autofocus is on my Tech channel and piles of Fujifilm fan boys thumbs down the video. It was showing me moving and the camera losing me. Holding a high contrast item and the focus was pulsing in and out. I even tried multiple methods cause people were like your settings are wrong and tried multiple settings with the same results. Stupid fan boys destroyed the video so nobody could see it.
@@r423sdex Maybe they shouldn't advertise it as a social media camera then if you need to spend however long learning how to perfectly use the visibly dodgy autofocus, The examples in this show that the professional reviewers don't even know how to use it, so it can't be that easy 😂 Their target audience's phone will have better autofocus, this is supposed to be a step up from a phone designed for people who don't want to learn Hence being if you care enough to learn you would get a better camera
It is nice to see that there is someone that is willing to talk the true and not waste time on UA-cam just to please the big brand. FUJIFILM AF do not work reliably, and I think telling the opposit is going to impact negatively reviewer that would just deny this fact. FUJIFILM it's time to take care about your customer.
wouldn't say they're frauds but they are reviewing cameras aren't ready to be reviewed and thats the problem and they always do say that to be fair. Problem is they never go on to review the final production model in most cases
I love your style and honesty. I'm too deeply invested in Fuji now to be able to make the change to another brand, but when I did my research about 5 years ago and bought the XT-4 I bought into the hype. Some of my images are so disappointing which is infuriating as many a unique moment has been lost. Keep up the good work.

I won’t be purchasing any more Fujifilm cameras without significant changes. I currently own an X-S20 and an X-T5. I downgraded my X-T5 firmware. I don’t use any subject or eye tracking because it doesn’t work reliably. Thanks for making this video, Edvard
Fuji is going full retro, film simulations like nostalgic neg are so good that to really look retro your subjects need to be out of focus. Apart from the pro’s of the time everybody has out of focus analog family shots. So you just misunderstand fuji’s strategy, this autofocus works as intended to give you the full retro experience! And everybody loves retro, but the autofocus is still a bit too good, too modern, so fuji will fix this in the next one or two firmware updates to give you a better classic experience
I complain about Fujifilm AF issues and some people keep telling me that I am the issue, not their beloved brand. Meanwhile, I use the A7C and never have any trouble using Eye AF even with the cheap lenses.
I dont understand people who are saying "user error" , check my fuji fanboys 2 video. And the last part , the drill analogy. (that's fuji fanboys in a nutshell)
Fujifilm officially made a statement about AF. They told that they will fix with the new coming firmware update. Fuji told this issue. They will soon publish updates.

Absolutely true ... same frustration with x100vi. x100vi is my first fuji camera as I generally shoot with Sony, there is absolutely NO comparison. Probably x100vi will be my first and last fuji camera unless there is some magic in the upcoming firmware which I am very very doubtful. Autofocus is just ridiculous.

Edward the reason these guys are hyping up Fuji is because they hope these videos will get them to be sponsored by Fuji or noticed by Fuji. I decided to buy an S9, which I really bashed hard on launch. But now that it has no record limits thanks to a good firmware update, it's the best budget Open Gate camera. This is Fujifilm's big upsell for content creators for repurposing, but man, the autofocus is just useless.
Saw a guy that was saying s9 is too expensive and xm5 is better, s9+35mm 1.8 = 1900$ ish ,be he forgot fuji apsc prices for lenses xm5+23mm lm 1.4 = 1700 ish .
@@edvard2942 not to mention Fuji would have to make a 1.2 to match the FF 1.8. Which would be even more expensive. And before anyone brings up the Viltrox 27 1.2 (great lens), it’s heavy and AF isn’t quite as fast as a native lens. And the focal length doesn’t match.
The S9 does not have a hot shoe correct? That's a deal breaker unfortunately. As a lazy JPEG shooter who wants aperture rings on their lenses, Panasonic is the only decent alternative to Fuji so I'm definitely hoping they release some more bodies this year

The X-H1 was the last OG Fuji. I did buy an X-T4 after that for better video AF, but sometimes I wish I just accepted those random focus issues and never bought another Fuji. That all said, the X-T4 does just fine for me. It’s not up to level of other brands but my demands aren’t high.
I sold all my Fuji gear 2 weeks ago cause I was on a shoot and missed focus so many times of still subjects. I switched all over to canon r6 mark 2 and it’s tack sharp every time the AF is the best on the market it’s amazing
I only have an X100T from Fujifilm. Planned to buy an XH2S but will go for an XH1 and just wait if things get better. If not, Lumix S5 IIX or Nikon ZF/Z6 III are smiling at me

Thanks again, Edvard. Fuji users want to believe this is the update we've been waiting for, but we've been burned too many times over this past year. My X-H2S is on version 5.03, which means things could be worse for me. When the big update comes out next month, I'm half expecting to finally cut my losses and revert to version 1.03, as many others have done. Fuji's algorithmic autofocus meddling simply hasn't been up to the task so far. I'll usually just try to keep a medium sized AF box over my subject for my tracking shots rather than disappoint myself with face/eye detection. I would be thrilled with my camera's AF performance in video if this was 2018. Every other aspect of the camera feels right at home in 2024, but the AF issues continue to be glaring.
The reason why Fujifilm continuously does this is YOU let them treat you like this. Enough is enough. Let them know that they need you not you need them
Guess we'll just have to see if the long awaited AF firmware fix dropping in November actually works... well at least for only the X-H2 lol, but I'll still only believe it when I see it

Possibly slightly off-topic, but if you look at Fuji's product page for the new XF500 prime lens, the fastest autofocus speed spec is shown as being set on an X-T4. Why use the older X-T4 and not the current flagship X-H2 or X-H2S, is it because their auto-focus is worse perhaps?

I love more and more your videos and this fuji show is getting more and more funny. I am giving a chance to fuji and wait for xh2s 8.0. And if not good i will go back to v1 One remark, shooting "automotive" object some times, i find it more reliable as eye detection. And for eye detection, i got use to lock AE as much as possible when my subject is keeping same distance to avoid bad surprise, but it feels like i have a "half AFC" camera and i feel very unhappy to use this workaround
Another great video. As a fujifilm fan, am truly hoping they fix it. But am afraid you are right, that the x-mount stepping mechanism is a bottle neck... I am even guessing now that the x-trans sensor logic might be another reason... Until they fix it, I just keep using manual or single point focus. Please keep up the awesome work in pointing out the issues, only this way accountability can be put in check.

Totally agree... unfortunately. Lets wait till November, hopefuly they can do something with AF. But as you said, stepping aperture during video, which makes me crazy too, probably can not be fixed due to some technical issues with x line cameras...
Thanks much for pointing out any potential issues with AF, but let's wait for the final firmware too. I am interested in this camera because it's compact and for stills, fuji AF has gotten pretty decent (at least using the X-T50). I would love if Fuji sent you a new firmware updated XH2S for you to test whenever that firmware comes out.
All the talk by other UA-camr's is that this camera is a step up from an iPhone and will introduce new photographers to the next level. Edvard clearly shows this is not the case, especially around the autofocus deficiency.
The camera has great image quality and its intended for begginers as you say step up from an iPhone, But you step up from an iphone to a camera that hunts when you film yourself... iPhone will never lose you

I'm glad you mentioned the mount itself may be responsible for some of the autofocus issues. In the Petapixel shots, as well as some others, to me it looked more like the aperture was changing in the typically jerky X-mount way than the lens elements moving to refocus. I haven't seen any detailed specs for the X-mount "standard" but I bet there's something within it that hinders smooth aperture changes and possibly even smooth focus transitions. Designing around a flawed mount spec may be impossible without making obsolete previous lenses or bodies or both.

Yes that is my opinion , even panasonic contrast based autofocus didnt do those steps, On fuji even when its working ok like in this video xh2s fw 1 , you can see in the bokeh that the af is still transitioning in steps. Also even with LM motors. But they can't change the mount after having a lot of lenses to sell.
purchased Sony A6700 3 days ago, Fujifilm was sneaking into my head over n over before buying Sony but now I'm thankful to myself that I made the right decision😇
@@GamingSunDBZ I've gone Sony by adding an 6700 and various E-mount lenses to my Micro43 gear. I can verify that the Sony AF is superior even to that of the Panasonic G9M2. But I'm still keeping the G9 because of its far superior IBIS and its video versatility.
I own an XT3, XT5, and X-E2S. All work okay in AFS, and CAF is okay for some wildlife, but humans seem to be an issue. I am on pause at this point with any future purchase of Fuji until I see what they do in the next firmware release. In the meantime, I picked up a 2020 used Olympus E-M10 IV, and in all cases, focus acquisition is faster than on my Fujis.
I suspect they have moved themselves into a dead end road. There could be issues they can't "fix" by software anymore. Required major changes might blow up the whole system leaving already lense owners behind. They should make a new start with FF bodies, new lense mount and a dedicated speedbooster for their apsc lineup to mount on.
Im curious how much of these af issues apply to photo af? I want to get the xh2s and the new 500mm f5.6 for wildlife, but am not sure how unreliable the af would be, which is a bit of a dealbreaker for wildlife
I use Fuji for professional purposes. I had the X-T30 and then bought the X-H2s along with several lenses. I always returned to the computer sweating, wondering if the shots would be in focus. Six months ago, I bought the A7IV and told myself I should have done it a long time ago. I still have the X-H2s as a backup camera and I'm keeping an eye on what they are doing with the firmware and what impact it will have. For me, it's a big disappointment because I enjoy shooting with Fuji, but for professional use, I currently prefer Sony. This situation has been going on for a really long time, and those who need equipment to earn money cannot afford to wait.
My XS20 works absolutely fine for solo work, never loses me, never hunts. It starts to struggle when you’re dealing with multiple people in frame. Content creators can absolutely benefit from 6K open gate, solely for cropping and repurposing reasons. Fuji needs to improve their video AF for sure. It’s just not as bad as people make it out to me. And if I were to move on, I’d def chose Nikon over Sony’s green/yellow skin tones any day
How about a side by side comparison between a Canon or Sony camera and a Fuji camera. I keep hearing how good the AF is on those cameras but haven't seen a comparison to see what the differences are really like?
What is the issue with Fuji AF anyway? Is it a lack of processing power? Can't they just write the code? Is it related to X-trans? Canon and Sony have perfected it by now and Nikon is also getting there, why can't Fuji?
Processor has a big role. Nikon had to upgrade theirs to get where they are. Fuji just refuses to admit it and make a better one. Hopefully the pressure will make them change it soon.
Sony added in the newest model extra processors for focusing. Reviewers do not give honest reviews, because even (older) Sony cameras do not have perfect autofocus and it cost me a lot of money. There are many other issues nobody is mentioning, e.g. for Sony lenses often decentering. "Reviewers" like edvard are very important, especially for hobbyists.
I say it is 75% lack of processing power & 25% software. Fuji is using super super old SoC in their X-Processor. Even a $50 streaming usb stick today is faster. X-H2/T5 they claim to have doubled the processing power. However, that was still slower than what Sony used in their older A7IV or maybe even A7III model. In the same year Sony released A7RV which increase the processor speed by 8x faster. Fuji just can't keep up and getting outpaced.
@@voorachter2733 Fuji doesn't always use new SoC for each release. Usually every other generation will get a speed bump. However, the hardware they use is always 2-3 generations behind their competitors. Most likely done for cost reasons.

I got so frustrated with my X-T5, I dug out my old Nikon D810 (which I have not used in years), and guess what? The autofocus is better on my D810 (and my Sony a6000), then my X-T5. I guess I should see how my X-T20 compares to my X-T5. Like everyone else is saying, it's time to move on to another brand. It's unfortunate that Fujifilm has lost their way and can't/won't find their way back, but as long as profits come in, nothing else matters.
Nikon D810 is legendary DSLR with very good sensor. Also, it has cross autofocus points, which probably no mirrorless has. From mirrorless cameras, you would have to have the newest models from Sony or similar to have good autofocus (there is though disadvantage, because Sony achieves that with extra processor, which drains battery a lot).
Was planning to buy a xh2. Currently using xt-3. But after seeing your videos I am like damnnnn no! I would rather go for Sony a7iii. But no more Fuji. Though I love my xt-3.

XH2s owner here🙋🏻♂️ When I shoot short film I turn manual anyway, but the most annoying part is all the new lenses are linear motor, when ai pull focus manually you can see the focus point is jumping in steps🥲 I do love the prores and image quality at that price point, so not planning to move away yet, just looking to buy a set of manual lenses😵
If you really want to see the design limitations of the XF lenses, all you have to do is put a Fujifilm lens in manual focus and then put a X-mount Viltrox or Sigma lens in manual focus. Every single Fujifilm lens I own adjusts focus manually in robotic steps (yes, even all the LM primes and zooms) Then my Sigma 56mm and Viltrox 13mm and 27mm all adjust manual focus smoothly. It's a design limitation of every single Fujifilm lens. Hardly anyone talks about it too.
yes, I think that's the case, My viltrox lenses in manual focus when i turn the focus ring is racking smoothly , I dont see steps . Never tried manual af on fuji lenses. I also think the XF is to blame for steps.
Very good observations my friend. I have an X-T4 and an X-S20. The only reason why the autofocus is still decent on them is that I never updated the firmware on the cameras. It's sad to say, but I may have to switch to another system.
I have a Leica with super slow contrast AF but in a talking head scenario or when doing a backwards walking shot it never ever looses the face. Would have never thougt that Fuji is so much worse lmao

These kinds of people were the reason I ended up buying the X-H2 and wasting thousands of euros on a useless piece of crap. The X-H1 was the last OG Fuji. I did buy an X-T4 after that for better video AF, but sometimes I wish I just accepted those random focus issues and never bought another Fuji. That all said, the X-T4 does just fine for me. It’s not up to level of other brands but my demands aren’t high.

I sold all my Fuji gear 2 weeks ago cause I was on a shoot and missed focus so many times of still subjects. I switched all over to canon r6 mark 2 and it’s tack sharp every time the AF is the best on the market it’s amazing

I only have an X100T from Fujifilm. Planned to buy an XH2S but will go for an XH1 and just wait if things get better. If not, Lumix S5 IIX or Nikon ZF/Z6 III are smiling at me

Thanks again, Edvard. Fuji users want to believe this is the update we've been waiting for, but we've been burned too many times over this past year. My X-H2S is on version 5.03, which means things could be worse for me. When the big update comes out next month, I'm half expecting to finally cut my losses and revert to version 1.03, as many others have done. Fuji's algorithmic autofocus meddling simply hasn't been up to the task so far.
I'll usually just try to keep a medium sized AF box over my subject for my tracking shots rather than disappoint myself with face/eye detection. I would be thrilled with my camera's AF performance in video if this was 2018. Every other aspect of the camera feels right at home in 2024, but the AF issues continue to be glaring.
The reason why Fujifilm continuously does this is YOU let them treat you like this. Enough is enough. Let them know that they need you not you need them

Possibly slightly off-topic, but if you look at Fuji's product page for the new XF500 prime lens, the fastest autofocus speed spec is shown as being set on an X-T4.
Why use the older X-T4 and not the current flagship X-H2 or X-H2S, is it because their auto-focus is worse perhaps?

One remark, shooting "automotive" object some times, i find it more reliable as eye detection. And for eye detection, i got use to lock AE as much as possible when my subject is keeping same distance to avoid bad surprise, but it feels like i have a "half AFC" camera and i feel very unhappy to use this workaround
Another great video. As a fujifilm fan, am truly hoping they fix it. But am afraid you are right, that the x-mount stepping mechanism is a bottle neck... I am even guessing now that the x-trans sensor logic might be another reason... Until they fix it, I just keep using manual or single point focus.
Please keep up the awesome work in pointing out the issues, only this way accountability can be put in check.

Totally agree... unfortunately. Lets wait till November, hopefuly they can do something with AF. But as you said, stepping aperture during video, which makes me crazy too, probably can not be fixed due to some technical issues with x line cameras...
Thanks much for pointing out any potential issues with AF, but let's wait for the final firmware too. I am interested in this camera because it's compact and for stills, fuji AF has gotten pretty decent (at least using the X-T50).

All the talk by other UA-camr's is that this camera is a step up from an iPhone and will introduce new photographers to the next level. Edvard clearly shows this is not the case, especially around the autofocus deficiency.
The camera has great image quality and its intended for begginers as you say step up from an iPhone, But you step up from an iphone to a camera that hunts when you film yourself... iPhone will never lose you

I'm glad you mentioned the mount itself may be responsible for some of the autofocus issues. In the Petapixel shots, as well as some others, to me it looked more like the aperture was changing in the typically jerky X-mount way than the lens elements moving to refocus. I haven't seen any detailed specs for the X-mount "standard" but I bet there's something within it that hinders smooth aperture changes and possibly even smooth focus transitions. Designing around a flawed mount spec may be impossible without making obsolete previous lenses or bodies or both.

Yes that is my opinion , even panasonic contrast based autofocus didnt do those steps, On fuji even when its working ok like in this video xh2s fw 1 , you can see in the bokeh that the af is still transitioning in steps. Also even with LM motors. But they can't change the mount after having a lot of lenses to sell.

@@GamingSunDBZ I've gone Sony by adding an 6700 and various E-mount lenses to my Micro43 gear. I can verify that the Sony AF is superior even to that of the Panasonic G9M2. But I'm still keeping the G9 because of its far superior IBIS and its video versatility.
I own an XT3, XT5, and X-E2S. All work okay in AFS, and CAF is okay for some wildlife, but humans seem to be an issue. I am on pause at this point with any future purchase of Fuji until I see what they do in the next firmware release. In the meantime, I picked up a 2020 used Olympus E-M10 IV, and in all cases, focus acquisition is faster than on my Fujis.

I suspect they have moved themselves into a dead end road. There could be issues they can't "fix" by software anymore. Required major changes might blow up the whole system leaving already lense owners behind. They should make a new start with FF bodies, new lense

Im curious how much of these af issues apply to photo af? I want to get the xh2s and the new 500mm f5.6 for wildlife, but am not sure how unreliable the af would be, which is a bit of a dealbreaker for wildlife

I use Fuji for professional purposes. I had the X-T30 and then bought the X-H2s along with several lenses. I always returned to the computer sweating, wondering if the shots would be in focus. Six months ago, I bought the A7IV and told myself I should have done it a long time ago. I still have the X-H2s as a backup camera and I'm keeping an eye on what they are doing with the firmware and what impact it will have. For me, it's a big disappointment because I enjoy shooting with Fuji, but for professional use, I currently prefer Sony. This situation has been going on for a really long time, and those who need equipment to earn money cannot afford to wait.

My XS20 works absolutely fine for solo work, never loses me, never hunts. It starts to struggle when you’re dealing with multiple people in frame. Content creators can absolutely benefit from 6K open gate, solely for cropping and repurposing reasons. Fuji needs to improve their video AF for sure. It’s just not as bad as people make it out to me. And if I were to move on, I’d def chose Nikon over Sony’s green/yellow skin tones any day
How about a side by side comparison between a Canon or Sony camera and a Fuji camera. I keep hearing how good the AF is on those cameras but haven't seen a comparison to see what the differences are really like?
I love fuji. The main thing is to find the good in it and work with that. And autofocus is a manifestation of the camera's bad character.
What is the issue with Fuji AF anyway? Is it a lack of processing power? Can't they just write the code? Is it related to X-trans? Canon and Sony have perfected it by now and Nikon is also getting there, why can't Fuji?
Processor has a big role. Nikon had to upgrade theirs to get where they are. Fuji just refuses to admit it and make a better one. Hopefully the pressure will make them change it soon.
Sony added in the newest model extra processors for focusing. Reviewers do not give honest reviews, because even (older) Sony cameras do not have perfect autofocus and it cost me a lot of money. There are many other issues nobody is mentioning, e.g. for Sony lenses often decentering. "Reviewers" like edvard are very important, especially for hobbyists.
I say it is 75% lack of processing power & 25% software. Fuji is using super super old SoC in their X-Processor. Even a $50 streaming usb stick today is faster.
X-H2/T5 they claim to have doubled the processing power. However, that was still slower than what Sony used in their older A7IV or maybe even A7III model. In the same year Sony released A7RV which increase the processor speed by 8x faster. Fuji just can't keep up and getting outpaced.

@@voorachter2733 Fuji doesn't always use new SoC for each release. Usually every other generation will get a speed bump. However, the hardware they use is always 2-3 generations behind their competitors. Most likely done for cost reasons.

Fuji will not learn, or cant change as you mentioned. I moved to a sony a6700. and i absolutely love it. So reliable and awesome quality.

I got so frustrated with my X-T5, I dug out my old Nikon D810 (which I have not used in years), and guess what? The autofocus is better on my D810 (and my Sony a6000), then my X-T5. I guess I should see how my X-T20 compares to my X-T5. Like everyone else is saying, it's time to move on to another brand. It's unfortunate that Fujifilm has lost their way and can't/won't find their way back, but as long as profits come in, nothing else matters.
Nikon D810 is legendary DSLR with very good sensor. Also, it has cross autofocus points, which probably no mirrorless has. From mirrorless cameras, you would have to have the newest models from Sony or similar to have good autofocus (there is though disadvantage, because Sony achieves that with extra processor, which drains battery a lot).

When I shoot short film I turn manual anyway, but the most annoying part is all the new lenses are linear motor, when ai pull focus manually you can see the focus point is jumping in steps🥲
I do love the prores and image quality at that price point, so not planning to move away yet, just looking to buy a set of manual lenses😵

If you really want to see the design limitations of the XF lenses, all you have to do is put a Fujifilm lens in manual focus and then put a X-mount Viltrox or Sigma lens in manual focus. Every single Fujifilm lens I own adjusts focus manually in robotic steps (yes, even all the LM primes and zooms) Then my Sigma 56mm and Viltrox 13mm and 27mm all adjust manual focus smoothly. It's a design limitation of every single Fujifilm lens. Hardly anyone talks about it too.
yes, I think that's the case, My viltrox lenses in manual focus when i turn the focus ring is racking smoothly , I dont see steps . Never tried manual af on fuji lenses. I also think the XF is to blame for steps.

Very good observations my friend. I have an X-T4 and an X-S20. The only reason why the autofocus is still decent on them is that I never updated the firmware on the cameras. It's sad to say, but I may have to switch to another system.

I have a Leica with super slow contrast AF but in a talking head scenario or when doing a backwards walking shot it never ever looses the face. Would have never thougt that Fuji is so much worse lmao
