when I first saw this intro way back in 2004, I knew I was in for a treat and honestly, this game changed me. I didn't really like history as a kid, Rome total war changed that for me.

And I'll say that my mouthful of advice is it. But by golly if we get a R1 remastered, revamped, revised. @@heyitsamy1771 its just not the same. I had to really zoom in and listen close for it. The OG game made it cinematic and epic, and you watched your men get pumped for the battle ahead.

Playing Total Warhammer 2 right now, and I'm struck by just how kickass Rome's music is compared to any that came after. It can make even an in-engine cutscene without dialogue and lousy models hype me up despite the almost 20 year gap between the two titles
Yeah CA could add so much atmosphere to newer games with a better soundtrack, as in more "emotional" than just their modern OST which feel designed to win technical awards.
Agreed 100% on the music. A week ago I got the remastered version and the first time "Divinitas" started up I was grinning like an idiot because it felt like I was home.
Age of Empires, Stronghold, Civilization, Total War, and to some extent Empire Earth were the games that heightened by interest in history. And the Crusader Kings 2 came with its DLCs, showing how fun alternate history can be and how the best kind of RPGs are the one where you can really play a role while the game provides the tool to build the narrative.
I remember playing this game for the first time back in 2005. Back than I lived in Germany and a friend of mine who came from America owned this game. RTW was really amazing.
Growing up my dad would play this game a lot and I would literally just sit right next to him and watch him play, and everytime this intro would come we never skipped it. Now I’m 25 and I got it for myself it’s so good.
When this game was released i had no computer to play but i still bought the cd and i started saving money to play this game on my own computer and meanwhile i brought cd with me wherever i go and i still have it. This game is everything about my childhood :)
The newer ones don't feel as fun from a player perspective and don't feel as loved by the creators, rather soulless and more focused on stat balancing.
This video sold me to Total War games. Back then i was like 15. My aunt gave me this game as a birthday gift. I didnt know what to expect. I didnt even had youtube access all the time. But the screenshots looked nice. Is it like Age of Empires 2 but with bigger pop than just 200? Installed the game, then saw this intro.
Bear in mind this game released in the same year as Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 and it still stands today as a (yes dated) but landmark part of the strategy genre. The fact it's graphics are pretty decent for the time and yet also stretched to a game which can encompass 1000s of units per battle still impresses me to this day
I just noticed. Thats the siege of Minas Tirith and Pelennor Field if you think about it. The barbarians/gauls are the Orcs. The roman cav charge are the Rohirrim saving the battle. The Carthaginians elephants the Mumakil. The battering ram shot is Grond. The elephants charging the gate are the Olog-Hai.

it might sound shocking for some people. but, I remember I was wondering why intro presented with cohorts of hundreds of people in each, and actually in game there is just somewhere around 50.
