Just a correction, the idea that Toriyama intended to stop at the Freeza arc is something a Viz editor stated and everyone took that as fact but this was never confirmed by Toriyama
Haven't watched the video yet, just saw the thumbnail and title, and I will die on this hill with you. SSJ4 is just such a cool design and I loved it for Goku, Vegeta, and Gogeta
You made me connect the dots in how the thematics of the Super Saiyan God (Red) connect to the whole culture of the Saiyans. And it's quite fitting too since the idea of a Saiyan Saiyan God was just prophecy of the Oracle Fish, nothing tangible like a myth or fable like in Super Saiyan 1. The Saiyans of Old couldn't have possibly come together in a moment of unification and togetherness with the exception of Bardock, who had the selfless decision to send his child away before their karmic end. Through, Goku, Vegeta, Broly and their respective friendships and connections. They get to redefine their cultural history through a new lens that isn't plagued by their bloody ancestry.
I really despise that rewriting of bardock. He's a selfish dick in the original Japanese version of his tv special, like Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta on his first appearance, and Goku when he first lands on earth. In TFS's words, he commits genocide and doesn't afraid of anything
Im glad dragon ball super came out, so everyone could have nostalgia for a series they havent watched in decades. Because its literally painful to watch. Say what you will about super, but it had a plot, and it executed on those things. GT is a bunch of good ideas and a bunch of episodes that are difficult to watch. Tell me more about how much you love the deep and intricate character of super 17, or how baby feels like he wasnt spacled onto the end of the black star balls to give them an actual villain. Or how the shadow dragons werent boring and repetitive. People used to say GT stood for "Goku Time" but now that 20 years have passed, nostalgia glasses have kicked in.
I really love SSJ3 and the niche it filled. I even feel like it was a hint at SSJ4 to come since SSJ3 seemed more wild and harder to control and a huge drain on the person using it.
The anime adaptation of the SSJ3 kinda made me think that is was a attempt of unlocking the full power of a Great Ape/Super Saiyan and why he had no eyebrows. Like Goku is trying to reach SSJ4 but going about it the wrong way
Great video , as for Vegeta I always got the impression one of the many reasons he needed the waves contradictions is because he and Bulma used a loophole out of desperation to force him into ss4 without super Saiyan 3, which is why we got that scene when he turns back where Goku's confused that he can't just transform again
Some corrections. Plan to Eradicate the Sayians wasn't an OVA. It was a 90s video board game. It was remade for the Raging Blast video game. The tuffles didn't enhabit Planet Vegeta. They lived on Planet Tuffle. That's the one Baby brings back with the black star dragon balls. Another I noticed: Super Saiyan 4 isn't the only thing that can ignore the power of shenron. Nappa was doing that in the sayian saga. Red shenron was a more powerful shenron, but it's just another shearing, as easily dunked on as the previous one
Correction for the corrections. Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans was not a video board game. It was a card-based RPG released for the Famicom on August 6, 1993 that got a two-part OVA that acted as sort of a visual guide to the game. To say it's a video board game implies at least to me that it's something like Atmosfear where the video component is required to play the game when it isn't. Next, I don't know where you got that Nappa ignored the power of Shenron because there's no part to my knowledge of Nappa ever doing that.
@@denmark1226 I'd say that's not the same as what SS4 does. Also, that's not what Shenron says. Shenron noted it was not possible since he was created by God and he cannot grant a wish that's beyond his power. Now it's nebulously defined but honestly it seems more that the idea is that Shenron can't just be called upon to just kill people which would make sense given Kami's own aversion to violence since he was initially hesitant to restore the Dragon Balls when Goku went up to visit him following his defeat of King Piccolo because of all the bloodshed. This would be notable if it was a case of Shenron trying to grant the wish only for the Saiyans to outright reject what was going on and then he notes it's beyond his power.
Super Saiyan 4 is peak I agree. I do think Ultra Instinct is probably the only great transformation from Super as it is a sort of universal mastery of martial arts over a cool feature of your alien DNA.
Some corrections @11:10 SS grade 2 aka "super vegita" doesnt slow him down. It makes him stronger and faster, but in exchange the form is less stable. SS grade 3 "super trunks" slows him down for a massive power boost, and very unstable Ki. Mastered SS (grad 4) (what goku and gohan had) is more powerful than SS grade 2 and does not have the drawbacks
Want to know something funny, Goku have already master the great ape form in Dragon Ball, doing the King Piccolo Arc (That why we see the Great Ape before Goku finishing off King Piccolo) and he overcome his tail weakness in his fight with Krillin. I like Super Saiyan 4, but how he got it wasn't good. Lastly, Goku couldn't turn into a Super Saiyan God in the Broly movie because Vegeta wasn't righteous at the time and they didn't have the other two Super Saiyans need it
There was nothing stated he mastered the form, the water he drank only allowed Goku to access his "wild" "dormant power" which is actually brought up in GT with the Golden Ozaru being that same dormant power of the Ozaru. The state Goku was in also requires no Blutz Waves or anything like that, it's merely shown to be an increase in power.
If DBS could bring Broly and Gogeta back into canon, then why couldn't SSJ4 forms? Also, because you've mentioned Sailor Moon, you should really do a "what if Goku and Usagi switched villains" video. I know Goku will just powerhouse the entirety of Sailor Moon's villains except maybe Sailor Galaxy because she's near Beerus' level, but I'm curious how Usagi would handle Dragon Ball's villains with her Eternal form.
Super Saiyan 4 is cool as a concept. Calling back to the bestial nature of Great Ape and meshing it with Super Saiyan. If only it came from something other than GT. Wow I hate GT, and my god is Super Saiyan 4 ugly. Black hair's fine, Great Ape fur for the body is cool, but why is it red? A pinkish red? Why does he have blood-red eyeliner? Why would you stick him in piss-yellow pants if you're going to put in so much red?? (Also, you mention "Goku pulling it out of his ass" for Super Saiyan 3 and for the sake of the bit I wish to showcase the scene where GT Goku gets his tail back).
The thing about Super Saiyan 3 is, it's a useless transformation it looks cool but it hemorrhages stamina more than any other form including Super Saiyan 4 and Blue, and though Super Saiyan 4 is cool as F the series it comes from drags it down, GT is the Goku show if he isn't your favorite than the show is beyond infuriating to engage with. Super Saiyan blue is a color swap but Dragon Ball Super gave characters other than Goku Spotlight so my opinion on it grew from positive interactions.
You know what's cool and scary at the same time about Super Saiyan 4? In GT Perfect files, SSJ4 was stated to take a saiyan's power to their potential. There is no multiplier, just potential. And Goku absorbed power from his fellow saiyan warriors(Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Pan) twice and became Super Full Power Saiyan 4 and then Ultra Super Full Power Saiyan 4, it came across as not only Goku became stronger, but the form itself, meaning that the transformation granted the Goku more power then when he had first achieved it. And Vegeta achieved it as well and despite only just getting it and not being granted power from his fellow saiyans, he was still evenly matched with Goku! Based on the GT Perfect Files's information and how Super Saiyan 4 was utilized in GT, it's almost portrayed as the Saiyan equivalent to the Ultimate Form from Elder Kai! Edit: heck when Trunks even stated in the Shadow Dragon Saga about SSJ4 Goku’s power Quote: “He’s taken his max power as Super Saiyan 4 and extended even further!” Plus, the Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultra God Mission manga(an official Dragon Ball story mind you), provides a scaling of how strong Super Saiyan 4 can become. After defeating Demigra, CC Goku and Goku Xeno have one final fight to settle their score. They both start off in base and are shown to be equal in power. Then they start going through their common forms; Super Saiyan 1, 2 and 3, and they’re still shown to be equal. When they used their unique forms is when things started to get interesting. CC Goku turns Super Saiyan God during a Kamehameha beam clash, and which Goku Xeno responds by turning Super Saiyan 4. After that CC Goku turns Super Saiyan Blue and lands a kick to SSJ4 Goku’s facing, only for Goku Xeno return the favor with an equally strong hook to CC Goku’s face, and they’re still going toe to toe with each other. Then they hit their strongest forms; Xeno goes Super Full Power Saiyan: Limits Broken and CC turns Ultra Instinct(Sign) and once again they’re still even. It’s when CC uses Silver Ultra Instinct that he managed to beat Goku Xeno. This showed that Super Saiyan 4, along with its variants such as Full Power and Limits Broken are able to rival the God Forms.
Great video, SSJ4 is usually gassed due its unique design but it does have a lot of great thematic elements to it that tends to be overlooked. Mastering your innate demons makes SSJ4 a form of compassion despite its aggressive visuals, it’s really good. That said, the God transformations from Super are in NO WAY bad. If SSJ4’s symbolism is often overlooked, then the SSGs are completely overhated and misunderstood in what they actually accomplish for the story. I’m routinely impressed by how much good faith is given towards SSJ4 but is completely absent when people talk abt God or Blue. Super Saiyan God is pretty self explanatory, it’s just a regular Saiyan with god ki. The flame aesthetics are great, I love the slimmer build it has, it looks innocent and curious despite its strength, and I love it for that. God isn’t really controversial at all, I’d say it’s unanimously loved. Blue is the contentious form for which I do not understand its hate. Super Saiyan Blue is a mastery of god ki - keeping yourself calm and serene while in Super Saiyan. It recontextualizes SSJ as a form of martial arts mastery and the dichotomy between godhood and saiyan. It has a great color wheel, I love the lil front bang it has, and I think it aesthetically pleases me a lot. Visually it looks good, and is *meant* to be derivative as it’s simply SSJ with god ki instead of mortal ki. The real pluses of Blue comes in its actual utility though. It’s objectively the best written transformation in the franchise. Its calm nature means it can be mixed with techniques like Ultra Instinct as they don’t actually contradict each other, like we see in the Granolah saga. It is very light on the body and doesn’t have a lot of energy exertion, so it can be stacked with Kaioken and make that technique usable too. Blue allows for older techniques to see relevance again, and for newer techniques to see use alongside Blue for combined effects. I yearn for the day the God forms (specifically blue) aren’t just written off as color swaps. They have unique properties that allows for some of the coolest stuff we see in this franchise. NO OTHER transformation is like Blue, it is the potato of the forms lol. It brings obsolete techniques back, it works with new techniques too, and Blue has a gorgeous color wheel and design to boot. It represents calm strength and mastery of oneself, an important precursor to Ultra Instinct. Unlike bad forms like SSJ2 or SSJ3, Blue is not a mere power-up, and Blue can scale far wider as its not a simple raising of power level. Blue is doing way too much to just be written off the way it is. Just because Blue is not as thematically succinct as SSJ4 doesn’t mean it’s completely worthless. It’s objectively the best form as it does the most for other techniques around it, and has unique elements in its own right. SSJ4 without its thematic elements actually doesn’t have a lot going for it imo.
I mean the design and further connection to the inspiration are cool, but the story way of *literally* pulling Goku's tail out of his ass makes the jokes write themselves

Oh yeah, the “we’re at the end of the game, so who cares about balance” transformation.
So many good memories with those old PS2 era DBZ games
