is it just me or does this game just ramp up the barbarians in the early game way to bloody high? its like you're forced to pound to archery right off or you're dead.

For now, this is a one-off preview, as the game isn't out yet. I'd potentially be open to doing a bit more, though, as I bloody love Mali's gold focus.
I would really like a gathering storm series as either episodes or livestreams
@@ManyATrueNerd Ah right thanks for clearing that up. I agree that Mali might just be the most fun civ for people like us who like to make money. I for one would love to see a full playthrough of Mali where your goal isn't to win but to make as much money as physically possible.

@Banana Bee Well, to be fair, they did remove/downgrade quite a few features with Civ 6 when you compare it to Civ 5 with expansions. Unfortunately many game series tend to become more shallow over time. The first game allowed you to melt the polar ice caps and cause global flooding. I wish they'd bring that back.

In the base Civ VI, Toronto existed as a City State. Is it still a City State in this expansion? Is it possible to have 2 Torontos fighting each other? If Toronto annexes Toronto, does it become the Greater Toronto, and does the area around it become the Greater Toronto Area?
And if Toronto ceased to be a City State, which new City State has Toronto's old abilities?
Toronto has been integrated as a normal city for Canada. Buenos Aires took the place of Toronto city-state.

Actually I believe Mexico City took the place of Toronto, not Buenos Aires (which was already a city state and has their bonus resource gives amenity bonus). And yes it's also weird having Mexico City and Aztec's capital in the game at the same time.

Oh, the whole shifting capital thing to guarantee loyalty, and then aggressively forward settling is great, but I love playing with a gold-focus anyway, so a gold-civ is just my thing.

Actually I think you needed 2 of the same resource to make most stuff that required a certain resource. Now it looks like strategic resources work more like they did in Civ 5.

When u placed the Religious District i was like : he's Mansa Muse, has almost no Production and changes one Faith against 1 production and 4 gold...

Mali seems extremely OP early game if you can get a good roll on starting location. That extra gold will be game-changing as you won't have to worry as much about maintenance costs for units/districts/etc. and can buy your way through military units. Unless it's balanced in a way that isn't shown in the video? It's been a while since I've played.
On higher difficulties Mali is definitely hit or miss as the game is very production-focused. In the early game most AI will try to gangbang you and if you can't build a capable army fast enough you'll be done for. Mali can be quite good however if there are no AI terribly close by and you get lucky with the terrain around your starting location.
4 gold=1 prod, you don't have any bonus prod early, huge penality for producing things, and a desert start, with no production. The one thing you get early as Mali is food and faith. So, for me, no, not op at all. Maybe in the end they can snowball, but the early seems so harsh

Did Jon just luck out when it comes to starting location or is Mali OP? Seems like one hell of a civ
As someone who enjoys Mali a lot, he had an incredibly lucky start here. Kilimanjaro is arguably the strongest wonder for early game, and when you have it offsetting the inherent crappiness of desert tiles, you have a start so OP I'm suspicious he created it in the game editor lol. Plus like a ton of mines around. Pretty much the perfect Mali start.
50 bucks says the real Mansa Musa also said verbatim "darn, I coulda bought a religion, I probably should have done that but oh well" as he was setting out on his Mecca pilgrimage to raise his profile with those peasant sultans of the north

early Reyna to buy districts is actually a bad move for Mali since districts is one of the few things they don't get a production penalty for.
Yeah he had godly RNG for his starting location but you can't fault him for making some bad choices since he plays a lot of games.
Did they fix Poundmaker in this update? Som of his relatives complained that the only real possible win condition was a quoncuest one and Poundmaker was a well known peacemaker.
Commenter from the future here. Poundmaker wound up being one of the weaker civs unfortunately. I'm not sure if they ever addressed this particular complaint, but his only real perk is that he's kinda good at trade? But like, not that good, and there are several better trade civs that also have bonuses towards win conditions. They're supposedly done balancing the game now, which is a shame because Poundmaker is one of 5-6 civs that really could have used a rework / buff.
In min 27 ya can see the gouvernor of a foreign civ in a citystate
And think about the free trade route for every golden age
