- Turmeric is mainly grown as monocrop or intercrop in wet and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka. However, promoting the dry zone turmeric cultivation under intensive irrigation and proper shade conditions could address the increased demand for locally produced Turmeric and create an extra potential for exportation.
Major growing districts are Kurunegala, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy Matale and Ampara districts.
But all can grow them at home easily.
Although many different soil types are permissible, turmeric grows best in well-drained, sandy soil that is rich in organic matter.
Turmeric is usually ready for harvest within 10 months to a year of sowing. They are ready for harvest when the leaves and stem start turning brown and dry up progressively.
Usually plant them in April to june and harvest in January to march.
Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin (the main antioxidant), which is more easily absorbed by the body when using fresh turmeric. Good quality powdered turmeric also contains curcumin; however, the potency is lower in comparison. Fresh turmeric has a more vibrant and spicier taste and can be used while cooking as a paste.
Drinking turmeric water helps the skin radiate and look healthier. *Turmeric water also elevates liver health by producing vital enzymes capable of detoxifying the blood going to the liver by breaking down the toxins. *Turmeric water also helps in weight loss and indigestion.
Different mordants-substances used to set the dye in fabric-also produce different results. Turmeric is a great natural dye for beginners. It yields a warm gold color on undyed natural cotton fabrics, silk and wool.
