I did the shakedown drive for my friends 981 Spyder 4.5 before shipping it back to the west coast and it was the most fun Porsche I've ever driven. The torque everywhere 4.5 makes the car feel hundreds of pounds lighter because the car just goes, effortless, the GT3 engine is awesome and dramatic but it feels limited, you have to wait for revs or always be riding the top end for that feeling.

I understand but what’s the point of getting this kind of car, and going and driving it in the rain when you might need the top (I have driven a Spyder RS in the rain without the top and at highway speed, literally zero water gets in the cabin). Just don’t use the top, hell, don’t even bring it with you to save some weight. Seems pretty simple to me.
Love the review. I am sooo happy with my 2023 Spyder. I had an opportunity to buy an RS, but for $75,000 over sticker. NO way. The idea of a very difficult top and no manual, further solidified my wish to buy a Spyder. However, good luck in buying a Spyder with low mileage without paying over. I paid about $20,000 over for my low mileage Spyder (843 miles). It was within 98% how I would have spec'd it out and that was still much less than $75K. I am considering a tune and exhaust and, possibly the transmission from DeMan. I am still not convinced about going to 4.5L on this car. I might do that on my 991.1 GTS. As always, great reviews.

Well done Matt….I find the Spyder RS to be brilliant and love the intake wail. Much better in person than in videos. The base Spyder probably looks a bit better and cleaner to be fair. Well done on your conversion!

Awesome review, Matt. Just to clarify, the plain-Jane 718 Spyder is indeed a true GT department car. Same engine and chassis as the GT4. I know that you know this.
Well said sir! I can imagine myself doing this same review and I'd probably (can only imagine) I'd say the same. The most important part is individuality. Drive the car FOR YOU.
What a delicious review - to be inhaled by fresh coffee and a fruit tart. This is awesome guys. And also I am very happy for Matt that you still prefer and like your car. Double awesome! The majority of us should be ver happy about it!
981 S/GTS is where its at. Has the sounds, fast roof and a fraction of the cost. Itll take a corner at similar speeds, so are you really slowing fown that much in a canyon
It's certainly diminishing returns, stepping up to a 981 spyder... But the spyder without a doubt sounds better, handles better, and looks better. The S/GTS are amazing values, but the rareness of the 981 Spyder has also helped it to retain its value and even appreciate.
@@sbdave so you own a spyder? If money were no object I guess I'd be in a 488 pista spider! All great cars. Porsche are very clever about offering small incremental gains
Yeah Matt, you were 100% right with your choice to get the DeMan car, what a thing that is. I'd be happy with a regular Spyder personally, although I live in Northern England so maybe the Cayman. One day.
You did an excellent job, Matt. Thank you. They are indeed 3 unique riffs on sports car perfection. No wrong answer. (I’ve had 2 of the 3) I will say, as far as canyon carving goes, I’d rather come out of a corner at 7000 RPMs than 4000. :) Just sayin.
Now thissss is what we want to see! What a grouping. Would like to see you guys drive a well sorted Gen 2 Viper RT10 with fresh rubber. One of the most exciting and pure driving experiences I've found. I think people would be surprised with how well a nice early Viper drives.
Great video. Though wish you could have also had a stock 981 Spyder to compare. I still think the 981 Spyder is the best of the bunch… Compared to the 718 Spyder, the 981 has a much better sounding engine and exhaust note. It also has a much firmer clutch pedal and better exterior curves, especially the rear end with its curved and integrated taillights. Sure, the 981 Spyder has less power and less front end grip, as instead of the 991 GT3 front end chassis and steering it has the same fixed suspension as the Cayman and Boxster GTS with the optional lowere Sport suspension and the steering rack from the 991 Turbo. Again, though, the fixed suspension is Goldilocks perfect without the need for any adjustment, whereas the 718 Spyder suspension is either too hard or too soft in its 2 settings. The Spyder is a car that’s about experience, not lap times or drag races. To that end, the 981 Spyder in stock form has the best suspension, the best clutch pedal feel, the best sound (of any stock Spyder, IMO), and the best looks. And it’s cheaper than all 3 of the options you tested.
Thank you for this informative video! I have the 2022 Porsche 718 Spyder with manual transmission. Had it a few months now. Bought it used. It's yellow with very good specs including a titanium over axial PF delete pipe. I did a Softronic tune. The BHP is probably close to 450 and the torque close to 350. Love that car. It's everything I need. (I also have a tuned Lotus Evora GT with 504BHP and 403rwt) PS: I got the car vacuum. :-)
Awesome head-to-head comparison. Your car looks amazing. Other than aesthetics, if you're tuning, advantage of Spider over GTS? I have a 4.0 and am getting pretty close to doing something about the transmission ratio and power.
Watching this makes me love my BGTS 4.0 even more. I would not want to deal with roof mechanism on either of these variants. I've already put on a JCR exhaust and will probably do the shorter gears next. Altogether I'd still be under $120K. So, what I learned from this video is that I've got a keeper in BGTS 4.0 :)
Great review Matt! I agree that your car is the best of the three although for most people it's not emissions legal in California. I know that for you it's not an issue......
Thanks Matt. This was a very timely and informative video for me. I own a manual 718 Spyder and have been considering a Deman upgrade at some point down the road. Than last week, I got a call from my Porsche dealer that they had a SRS allocation and I was next on the list. I have until April till the build goes hard and my deposit does as well. I’d appreciate any feedback by Matt or others around the pdk vs manual differences. I recently drove a 997 with pdk, but that felt pretty sterile compared to my Spyder. Not sure it was a fair evaluation of the pdk. Maybe the next video could be a deep dive into SRS pdk vs Spyder with manual.
What a lineup! I think the factory RS being a high revving buzzbox is (rightfully) in keeping with RS tradition, but I also agree that you'll be constantly breaking the speed limits to enjoy that sound in that particular car. Revvy engines are perhaps better suited to slower cars in general. Your Integra Type Rs and whatnot. The DeMan 4.5 makes so much sense for your usecase, and I bet most people's usecase really. Maybe less sense than the stock Spyder, but more than the RS for sure. Love the soft top race, it's a great addition to the video AND it's informative for potential buyers😁
I couldn’t agree more I loved my 718 Spyder I wanted the PDK and bucket seats now I have the Spyder RS and love that too they are like different cars completely. The roof goes up very rarely so never a problem.
I wouldn't have any regrets about how you built yours either. It's exactly what I'd do as well. I too would rather your setup vs. a 4RS. Though I'm up by South Lake Tahoe so I'd go Cayman gt4 because we get more rain and snow. I'd still go 18 way adjustables and manual though. How anyone would say anything negative about your setup is beyond me.
Each to thier own, but a porsche boxster isn't a turbo diesel/muscle car. Its a high rev old school sports car that lost its way with turbos. If sound is no longer Important, why not get you torque from an EV
I absolutely love my base 718 Boxster. I don't think for the additional money that it's worth it to go up to a Spyder. The stock gear also works pretty well for the Turbo cars.
The problem is how you roll the top up. It needs to be done in a different way. You need to clip the ends to the bar!! It would help a lot and also makes more place in the trunk, because the clips will end up in the correct position under the "trunk".
Absolutely loved the video! Matt, what is the exact configuration of your exhaust on your Spyder? Is that the stock back box with headers/high flow cats and new OAP’s? Thanks again for the great comparison!
I bought Boxster Gts 4.0 instead of both and very happy with it. In terms of practicality gts is way better than both. Fabspeed headers, opf delete and m engineering stage 2 tune performance is pretty good and so the exhaust note. Gts and spyder engine exhaust note is better than spyder rs for sure. Your 4.5 built is pretty nice and best choice in these 3 cars but I would prefer that on a gts for everyday enjoyment. Thanks for the video.
Strong tangent from the videos topic, but do you think you will do "custom builds" again? I still love the VIP build you did a lot of years ago. That was awsome, I had fun watching that ^^ I like what you do now, I still watch pretty much all your videos, I miss those though.
This video was well done. Totally agree with Matt that’s there’s no bad choice here. To my ears, nothing beats the sound of the RS but to my wallet, nothing beats the standard Spyder. The DeMan just sweetens the deal quite a bit and no question is a torque beast. However, I still feel like a tuned Spyder or GT4 with a Kline exhaust is the right way to go and is an absolutely perfect canyon carver and just all around fun car; not too stiff, no harsh ride and tons of fun. Don’t ask me how I know ;-)

Great video. Great cars. I’ve been loving my BGTS 4.0 since I picked it up a few months back.
What is amazing about this video is the Clarity of the voice even with roof down in the RS.
Great video guys, thanks 🎉
Yeah Matt, you were 100% right with your choice to get the DeMan car, what a thing that is. I'd be happy with a regular Spyder personally, although I live in Northern England so maybe the Cayman. One day.
Until it blows up and Rick DeMan ghosts him
happy that you are happy.....i think if i ever had the chance, a standard car with new gear ratios would tick almost everything for me.
13:28 "what?!" 😂
You did an excellent job, Matt. Thank you. They are indeed 3 unique riffs on sports car perfection. No wrong answer. (I’ve had 2 of the 3) I will say, as far as canyon carving goes, I’d rather come out of a corner at 7000 RPMs than 4000. :) Just sayin.
I agree with each of your choices and you've nailed it!
I still think the 981 Spyder is the best of the bunch…
Compared to the 718 Spyder, the 981 has a much better sounding engine and exhaust note.
As a 981 owner, totally agree!
That guards red with silver wheels is where it’s at thanks very much…
I love how much Matt looks like the other Porsche owner. It’s beautiful. Great video!!!
Very similar cars in caractere, except one being cabrio, imho.
This is exactly the comparison I was looking for……I’m sub’d, why isn’t TST in my feed?? Another great vid. Thx.
Awesome head-to-head comparison. Your car looks amazing. Other than aesthetics, if you're tuning, advantage of Spider over GTS? I have a 4.0 and am getting pretty close to doing something about the transmission ratio and power.
You know Matt, Deman has a 4.5 for the SRS/GT4RS also. Imagine that, a stroked and bored 9k California hot rod😊
All 3 of these are perfection!!!
JCR is incredible, have on my 911 🙏
Matt, when it comes to you doing Porsche’s, there is no substitute!! 😂
Nice summary! I'm happy to own one of the three.
Love this video!!! Great job making it Matt @ Zack!
Great review Matt! I agree that your car is the best of the three although for most people it's not emissions legal in California. I know that for you it's not an issue......
Excited to watch this comparison
Your car absolutely sounds the best.
Really enjoyed the format of the video. Taking the 4.5L spyder every time.
13.5:1 on 91 octane reliably is gangster
Marco, nooo! Opened the frunk AND the trunk 😂 - I thought “I didn’t think the top was stored in the frunk on the Spyder”. 🤓
Oh man so good. I wish I could get that engine on the other side of the world in my spyder too
I will always give a thumbs up for when Matt shows us tedious supercar stuff.
I’ll take the Deman in Guards red with the Silver Wheels… perfect!
Well done! really interesting comparaison :))
You can wash the RS with the roof off if you're careful 😃
The best Porsche is the Porsche you drive. I feel the same way about my car.
It would help a lot and also makes more place in the trunk, because the clips will end up in the correct position under the "trunk".
wish you had the 981 aswell
And 987.2 Spyder
4:00 Continuation of first gen NSX
7:00 RS
20:10 DeMan 4.5L
27:50 They're all great
I love this shot so much 21:18
Absolutely loved the video!
Matt, what is the exact configuration of your exhaust on your Spyder? Is that the stock back box with headers/high flow cats and new OAP’s?
Thanks again for the great comparison!
Should’ve just made the two tops the same, but love this test 🤙
I bought Boxster Gts 4.0 instead of both and very happy with it. In terms of practicality gts is way better than both. Fabspeed headers, opf delete and m engineering stage 2 tune performance is pretty good and so the exhaust note. Gts and spyder engine exhaust note is better than spyder rs for sure. Your 4.5 built is pretty nice and best choice in these 3 cars but I would prefer that on a gts for everyday enjoyment. Thanks for the video.
With you on that play. Boxster GTS manual proper roof, shorter gearing , ( Suspension if you must) happy days.
Love all of them!
Strong tangent from the videos topic, but do you think you will do "custom builds" again? I still love the VIP build you did a lot of years ago. That was awsome, I had fun watching that ^^
I like what you do now, I still watch pretty much all your videos, I miss those though.
The De Mann sounds like a WW2 aircraft.
Don’t ask me how I know ;-)
Great video - really interesting and informative. I love your pink car, it's perfect!!
great video Matt - i think i would go the way you did but not so sure about having a pink one.
I think it's perfect, in a sea of black, white and grey, a fun car should be a fun colour.
I pick the GT4RS over the 992 GT3..it drives amazing and worth every penny!!! The sound is intoxicating!!
Love your Cayman. REALLY love your Pam 610!
I was gonna get a 718 but the deal I got on this 2001 is300 was hard to pass up
