Monday Morning quarter-back, but they absolutely 100% should have made a system where the manual cloth top was permanently attached at the back, like as in a miata, if you didn't have to pull the handles and attach the cables to tension it, the operation would be significantly easier. They could still have the 2nd part removable, that stores in the trunk, that's fine... but the basic top should have been an easier operation.
Imagine being at a red light when the rain comes and the ‘08 Miata next to you presses one button to close the roof. Meanwhile, you have to pull out your Lego kit to close yours lol
The fact that the company that made this top also did the Targa where its fully power operated to lift away a white board sized panel and tuck it under the largest power operated piece in the car industry, is insane.
But the RS is an enthusiasts car. Isn't that experience what car enthusiasts want? More complicated, unforgiving, harsh. It adds to the experience. I wish they go a few steps further. The owner will have to unbolt the trunk lid and remove it, and the bolts are placed behind 3 layers of plastic trim pieces underneath the car and in the wheel wells. After the process, align the holes perfectly to seal it again.

I have one (since last year) so I should know 🧐: The weissach package does NOT save any weight (the front hood is made from carbon fiber anyway, with the weissach package you can see it from the outside, without weissach it is in car color)... only the magnesium wheels do save weight... (I do not have)... I also owned a 981 spyder and the roof of the RS is really terrible (even in comparison) but necessary since the air intakes take most of the room the top would go... it takes about 2 minutes to open or close if you are on your own and have experience with it. To get back to Doug: The driving experience is insane (!)... Never had such a great ride... so go get one if you can find one...

@@Yvaneify 1% of the time owning this, you would want a race car. The other 99% of the time, in the real world, you would need a relatively "normal" car. I can guarantee you, the third time the owner has to stop his driving, to set up a tent so the interior doesnt get fked, he would curse the moment he bought a car with no roof.

There's nothing insane about it, even Rolls-Royce's, Ferrari's and Lamborghini's can have blank buttons, and they are a lot more expensive. Also they're not poverty buttons on the Porsche, they can't be filled with options - they just replace the buttons and layouts between trim levels, but they'll always have some blanks between them - you just get the buttons you need there. The only buttons that change on Spyder RS are the FAL (optional extra) and my EU model has auto-start/stop below FAL which seems like NA models don't get.
To be a fly on the wall in the Porsche room meeting where that convertible process actually got approved. I would literally pay money to find out how that went down. Insanity.

It's funny you put this out today! I have a new perfectly speced 2023 718 Spyder. Was on the phone with a Porsche dealer yesterday trying to deal on a 2024 GT4RS. Very highly speced with 515 miles Porsche certified, so you get 6 years of warranty. The only problem is the window on it is $212k, and they have it listed for 260k! I offered 225K, which is well over sticker. I guess the high interest rates right now is not detering high pricing. ..!

The roof top situation is super cool imo. Especially if you like to play around with mechanical solutions. After all this a good weather car, on which you rarely will perform a "roof job"
The fact that a lot of car guys say the amg gt63 and sl63 are too much money while their willing to pay 165k for a entry level Porsche is insane when they can pay that almost for a base gt63 or a bit more for a sl63. Anyone remember Topgear and James May with the original 987 Spyder where they added the water hose for effect? This is the same roof, just 13 years later. I love that we still get a laugh out of the same joke of a roof. Other than that is seems the best open top sports car money can buy. I just took delivery of mine, and can only confirm it’s the best package I’ve ever experienced in a small sports car. Porsche really delivered with this engine in the mid engine platform and the intakes so close to the driver and passenger. Perfection. Thanks for your the video Doug.

I just want to know what engineering team lead cleared this top situation. I understand that the folks who go for this car are going to very rarely use this top, but for the few situations that it would be used (like a freak downpour) you’ll have a 200k, cold, slightly dangerous hot tub by the time the top is anywhere near on
Here in Germany you see any kinds of 911s at all Times. a Cayman and Boxster of any type are rare in Comparison. Always found that weird but i guess for many Porsche Enthusiasts only the 911 is a "real" Porsche or something. There is not one Day i drive for 30 minutes on the Autobahn around Frankfurt or Munich and not see at least 2-3x 911s but not so with Cayman or Boxsters. You made some mistakes with the roof; the two sides remain attached to the bar when you roll it, and when you tension the cable, first you do the driver's side and then the passenger's side where you have the handle to tighten it. The back part of the roof is basically used for nasty weather on when you wash it; almost all people use only the bimini top or full no roof; the three options bring different sounds and experiences, which is great; as a weekend car, it doesn't bother at all, as a daily obviously it does not work, but it was not the intention of this great car
I love how Doug's score never match the comments he makes throughout the video. Goes on about how much more practical it is compared to the GT4RS and that overall (despite optional seats) it's a more comfortable ride, yet gives it an identical score...

At RennSport Reunion last fall, Porsche was displaying this car and explained the engineering team wanted to sell it without a roof entirely, as a pure spyder. Marketing (and common sense) said that was crazy, and this contraption seems to be how they each compromised. Practicality was not high on the list of priorities!
To all those bashing the roof operation. This is the SPYDER. Spyders are always designed as a roof down car, with a roof being an emergency solution to not get wet when it rains. The first gen Spyder even was limited in speed with the roof up to something like 120 kph. Same thing was with Murcielago.
$160k car takes 5 minutes and three trips to opposite sides of the vehicle to put top up or down with SEVERAL opportunities to damage both the top and the paint exterior during installation/removal. $30k Miata drops top from the driver seat in 2 seconds, puts it back up in 4 seconds with no chance for damage unless you attempt at over 40mph. It's like Germany gives incentives to their engineers to make things overly complicated, difficult and convoluted.
@@bryanachee7133 Why should that make a difference? This car here seams to use the same amount of space for its roof than the Miata. It just has the worst roof design. The miata roof is also very light, so that can't make the difference.

I want one, and I would never raise the top. If it rains or will rain that day, I’d take my other car. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. When having to drive your other car, then when you get back into something like this on a nice day, from a to b you’d be saying HELL YEAH!!!!!
If the regular boxster had the option of having the manual top I would totally get it. Not for the weight saving, but for durability. It’s a system that will never need expensive maintenance
I mean I know its an RS, but at least give your customers the option of a power folding roof, or at least something less complex than that crap😂. Ive seen other porsches with tops that are basically just as complicated, it seems absurd at that price point.
I am telling you, this MA2.75 engine (The GT3 engine), is one of the all time greats. And Porsche's EXCELLENT chassis tuning and mechanical feel just makes cars with this engine be MASTERPIECES. If I didn't love Lambo's looks and V12 sounds so much this would probably be the most expensive car I would ever get a desire to buy. This is that good. Edit: Oh, and the Cayman/Boxster have always been better than the 911.
The top- it isn't an issue. You are getting this car to NOT have a top. It's a fair weather car, top to be deployed in case of accidental rain exposure. That's all there is to it.
Which is fine in CA or AZ. In places with variable weather in times of year you want to drive it (FL, NY..) it's absurd. Would be an amazing summer daily if you could choose automatic roof for an extra 36lbs.
I grew up driving manual transmission cars, then had some automatic ones and then a sports car with paddles. I thought I was so cool having paddles but just drive it in auto most of the time. I drove a friens 6 speed manual coupe a little while ago and loved how engaging and fun it was. You just can't beat stick shift for driver experience imho

I was thinking about getting one of these until I saw how ridiculous the convertible top is. That is why I ended up getting a Miata instead. Love my automatic convertible top 😊

I thought Doug was unnecessarily harping on the 981 boxster spyder’s top during his review. As an owner I can tell you it really isn’t that hard nor time consuming. With this car however, completely warranted. Love the car, but wow that is a crazy process

For a targa top, the C4 Corvette is surprisingly difficult because it's a part of the chassis 😂
I have tried both. The Murcielago is by far worse. This isn’t bad once you get the hang of it.

No, they don't need a motor or a mechanism to operate the top so it saves weight.

We’ve reached a world where a Boxster costs as much as a really nice 911 and not too long ago, this price would’ve gotten you a near top spec 911.
It is arguably a better sports car than any 911 below the gt3. The price is more than justified.

The back part of the roof is basically used for nasty weather on when you wash it; almost all people use only the bimini top or full no roof; the three options bring different sounds and experiences, which is great; as a weekend car, it doesn't bother at all, as a daily obviously it does not work, but it was not the intention of this great car
Owners of these are definitely making the dealer put the top off/on

its 991.2 gt3rs PDK and suspension with the 992 gt3 engine. the 718 chassis is the only "boxster" thing about this. its just a mid engine gt3

Having driven the 981 generation spyder, it’s a PHENOMENAL machine, so addicting to drive!
At RennSport Reunion last fall, Porsche was displaying this car and explained the engineering team wanted to sell it without a roof entirely, as a pure spyder. Marketing (and common sense) said that was crazy, and this contraption seems to be how they each compromised. Practicality was not high on the list of priorities!
The part from 24:08 is what Porsche needs to hear and do. I love the passion when Doug talks about the manual transmission Spyder RS at 24:38.

To all those bashing the roof operation. This is the SPYDER. Spyders are always designed as a roof down car, with a roof being an emergency solution to not get wet when it rains. The first gen Spyder even was limited in speed with the roof up to something like 120 kph. Same thing was with Murcielago.
$160k car takes 5 minutes and three trips to opposite sides of the vehicle to put top up or down with SEVERAL opportunities to damage both the top and the paint exterior during installation/removal. $30k Miata drops top from the driver seat in 2 seconds, puts it back up in 4 seconds with no chance for damage unless you attempt at over 40mph.
It's like Germany gives incentives to their engineers to make things overly complicated, difficult and convoluted.
does the miata have a 4L gt3 engine in the same space as the top?

The miata roof is also very light, so that can't make the difference.

These are all choices made by Porsche, and I find them indefensible.

I want one, and I would never raise the top. If it rains or will rain that day, I’d take my other car. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. When having to drive your other car, then when you get back into something like this on a nice day, from a to b you’d be saying HELL YEAH!!!!!

If the regular boxster had the option of having the manual top I would totally get it. Not for the weight saving, but for durability. It’s a system that will never need expensive maintenance
For that kind of money the process to put the top on is insane. This is the reason and the sole reason alone I won't be ordering one. 🤣

I mean I know its an RS, but at least give your customers the option of a power folding roof, or at least something less complex than that crap😂. Ive seen other porsches with tops that are basically just as complicated, it seems absurd at that price point.
I am telling you, this MA2.75 engine (The GT3 engine), is one of the all time greats.
And Porsche's EXCELLENT chassis tuning and mechanical feel just makes cars with this engine be MASTERPIECES.
If I didn't love Lambo's looks and V12 sounds so much this would probably be the most expensive car I would ever get a desire to buy. This is that good.
Edit: Oh, and the Cayman/Boxster have always been better than the 911.
The top- it isn't an issue. You are getting this car to NOT have a top. It's a fair weather car, top to be deployed in case of accidental rain exposure. That's all there is to it.
Which is fine in CA or AZ. In places with variable weather in times of year you want to drive it (FL, NY..) it's absurd. Would be an amazing summer daily if you could choose automatic roof for an extra 36lbs.
By the time you got the top on, the rain would probably be over.

I grew up driving manual transmission cars, then had some automatic ones and then a sports car with paddles. I thought I was so cool having paddles but just drive it in auto most of the time. I drove a friens 6 speed manual coupe a little while ago and loved how engaging and fun it was. You just can't beat stick shift for driver experience imho

I thought Doug was unnecessarily harping on the 981 boxster spyder’s top during his review. As an owner I can tell you it really isn’t that hard nor time consuming. With this car however, completely warranted. Love the car, but wow that is a crazy process
