- So, this is meant to be the Best of the Best, Canon's premium, and hideously expensive, fast standard zoom lens. Is it all people hoped it would be, or does the emperor, in this case, have no clothes? Let's take a look and see how it performs on both APS-C and full-frame cameras.

Superb review and analysis. Good job. I found it very useful. And what an extraordinary lens. Keep up the good work dude.
I love all your videos so much they're so entertaining to me hah I watch them all the time!
Found this lens for cheap because it had a scratch on the lens, but doesn't affect image quality at all. Quite lucky to be honest. Great Review
Love your reviews! thanks so much !!
So you pay over double to get the f2.8 version of this lens over the f4 but then all the best images are taken f4 or f5? What’s the point then…
thats 99% of lenses
Great review as always Chris, as you know I invested in this a few months back amazing quality lens a true performer but still slightly over priced imo, only slight fault is the weight it's quote a beast to hold on long jobs but worth the results it produces :)
Hi!Another well organized review here! I wonder if you're going to review the significantly lower-priced EF 24-70 F4 in the future? Many say that it's a fantastic one
Christopher Frost Photography please do a review abaut the f4 version too (I really need IS and that sweet macro)
Good video as always
The best reviews ever. Love your British accent
I think that it would be a good idea to include the settings that you used when you shot your example photos (shutter speed, ISO) to give an idea of the context of the qualities of the lens. Anyway, good video, thanks.
It's an absolutely amazing lens, honestly worth every penny!
Awesome video yet again
Well done . Good review
I really love your reviews, because its all about the review and not about you...
so here comes the request...
could you try to find/rend the 200mm 2.8 L mk i & mkii and make a review on them and speical in a vs with the 135 f2, they look really similar in shape... and have similar cm of depth of field... And also its is the second cheaper L lens after the 70-200 f4 :)
thanks a lot..
Keep up :)
I really want to, but I'm having trouble getting hold of one
i use this lense on my Canon R6 , i just love it
My thing about this lens vs the 24-105 f4L IS2 and looking through sample photos on Flikr etc, it seems a lot of photos aren't shot at the WOA, most being actually at f/4 or even higher. As I initially was looking for this lens, I found that with the 24-105 version 2's extra 35mm of range, constant f/4 aperture(only a couple stops different from the 2.8), and the Image Stabilizer that allows you to shoot down to 1/20th and still get sharp images, make it a better lens all around, especially if it's your go to lens, which it will be for me.
I however only am talking about the version 2 of it, the version 1 is very good, but I pre-ordered the 2 just because it was much newer and a better IS system.
I'd like to know your thoughts Christopher. Thanks!
Great review! If you want the most bang for your buck, you probably should go with the Tamron 24-70 2.8, which isn't quite as sharp as the Canon one, but has IS (and costs about 1k less).
All these years later and even the used Canon 24-70mm runs you a grand. You can get the Tamron at half that price. And it has “IS”. Shaking my head! I just can’t see paying over $1,000 for a used lens.
Good video thanks.
The Bokeh is what really suprised me when I first tried it out, it's SO good!
Hey, just found your channel and your videos are great!! Could you please review the Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 VC?? Thanks
Hi Chris,
I have been watching your UA-cam videos on the Canon, Sigma and Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 lens. I am just a hobbyist photographer and I have a Canon 90 d camera. I am looking at getting a 24-70mm 2.8. I want to use it for photos and videos and for general photography. All three of these lenses are expensive. Which one would you recommend please?
Keep up the good work on UA-cam.
5 years have passed and this is still one of the; if not the best 24-70 in the market
The Canon RF 24-70mm wants to have a word with you lol
Hi Chris love your reviews helped me a lot when choosing a lens. Have you ever considered reviewing cameras and other kit like tripods filters etc. I'm looking to upgrade my 600d soon I like the look of the 70d but can't decide if the 6d is worth it for the full frame. Would love to know your thoughts. Thanks Jamie.
The 6D carries amazing picture quality, the 70D brilliant functionality. If you do lots of video work or sports photography then the 70D is great, otherwise I'd recommend the 6D
Bought this lens second hand last week if I am right and I am really happy with it.
Price please.
I will get about $5,000 soon and I'm so going to buy this lens and spend the rest on traveling
Shut Up and Buy my Car
In 2020 this comment is like the ramblings of a crazy person
@@some______guy Hahahaha 2021 agrees!
How was it
Mine came in today. It's old and scratched in the front element, but at least I have one and it cost less than half the price. I made some extensive testing and the scratches doesn't appear in the pictures even at 24mm F16, and it also seems to have very good contrast, some say scratches take away contrast more than sharpness. It was either that or the Tamrom 28-75 2.8 new, I guess the Canon version scratched is still better in sharpness, but I didn't test. Still I'm very satisfied, crazy sharp pictures. I took pictures of the sky and walls of different colors, even my computer monitor, if anyone know the best test to see if scratches are affecting image quality I would like to know. I think that from now on I will only buy scratched top of the line lenses, if my experience with this one becomes favorable.
Hello Cris, could you please review or (revisit as you say) this lens again with your new chart and your lovely sony a7r ii???
I'm saving up for this lens for my canon 6d hopfully i'll get one next month
Did you?
Great job. Well done. The lens that costs 2200 $ it shouldnt extend and should be at the 70-200 2.8L II level and same design.
Is this lens compatible for Canon 80d?
Christopher Frost Photography hope you would do a review on the sigma 24-105 f/4!
what about the 24-70 f4 Canon compared to this one and the Tamron 24-70 VC?
Best Lens I have ever used !
I love (all) your reviews. Any chance you will do a review of the Canon EF 24-70 F/4L IS? I am also really curious about your opinion regarding the Canon 24-70mm F/4L IS versus the Canon 24-105mm F/4L IS. Supposedly the 24-70mm has improved the distortion and vignetting, however it is not always as sharp as the 24-105mm? Which one should I buy?
A review of that lens is coming in the next month or so
I can't believe Canon has no shame pricing its upgrades and the price they charge for correcting their more-less "faulty glasses". I can imagine the prices for Canon lenses in 6-10 years. No mortal will be able to get one for sure.
Turns out you're right, just happened a bit sooner than you expected.
😂
I bought a used MkII lens from an online reseller and paid 1/3 less for a copy that I challenge anyone to tell the difference between it and a copy that is new in an unopened box.
There are deals to be had you need to look.
Amazing as always, can you do a review ò Ca 70-200 F4
I already have :-)
Is it normal that this lens is not constant apeture when zooming in/out? Same as 24-105 f4?
great video, can i ask what do u think about the performrnce of this lens on canon 70D for portrait and fashion photography??
I test the lens's image quality on a 70D in this video
The one thing you really need to watch out for with this lens is the way you make the picture sharp. As it's really sensitive on that subject. Like it focusses truly well on the spot you selected, but if you want to shoot another spot just out of your focussing selecting then the picture fails. Never had this problem before with my cameragear. But it's not a disaster, just something to get used to/.
ONE obvious question 😊.. which APERTURE did you use? 😅
what about compare this with Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC?
Hey Christopher! Have you thought about reviewing Tamron's 24-70mm F/2.8 with VC? :) I've heard great words about it, but it would be even better if I saw you review it :)
Sincerely
MrRapala91
ur voice is soon relaxing...
when it comes to image sharpness which lens do you think has the sharpest image between this vs the Sigma 35mm f/1.4?get back to me ASAP, I'm planning to purchase one soon. after watching your video, now I know which one is the sharpest. I'm going for the Sigma. thanks for the video
so how your test resultttt
My dream lens. It cost nearly as quads of my job's salary (around 8k). It sucks to live in 3rd world country. I won't get it anytime soon though.
I have this lens and its picture quality is brilliant. However I'm thinking of selling it, because for portraits I often switch to 50mm or 85mm f/1.8 anyway, and for the price of this lens I could get a 24-70 f/4 with IS, a 70-200 and even another nice prime lens! If the image quality of the f/4 version is as good, this would be much more value for money.
Chris, any chance that You will do a review of Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens in near future?
Not in the near future, but it's certainly on my list of lenses to cover
Hi camera lovers. What tamron or sigma lens is close in quality to this one he is reviewing?
I own canon 55mm kitlense now the problem with my lense is its frame is very small i mean diametr
I want something with same quality but with bigger frame
I just can’t pull the trigger on this lens with the price/performance. It seems to work better on the apsc cameras. I’ve heard it’s a wonderful lens on the 90D which is what I have. 🤔
looking for a midrange zoom for my Canon 70d. I do not have a kit lens currently and am looking for something with a constant fast(for a zoom) aperture. What would you suggest?
+mofact84 Check out my fast standard zoom lens comparison video :-)
Hey Chris, would you mind making a review of the Tamron counterpart, you know, considering it's the cheaper alternative with image stabilization?
I want to soon, but I'm having trouble getting hold of one just to test
No rush! But definitely looking forward to seeing the review when it gets here :)
When's the 24-105 f2.8 coming?? That would be fantastic...
Kristian When alien technology crashes from space, the golden age of humanity begins and we have the capability to do it. Also it will cost more than a house...
What would be your recommendation: Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 USM 'L' Mark II or Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens?
I haven't tried the Sigma lens I'm afraid
@@christopherfrost thank you for responding
It is a brilliant lens, I've used it several times and although it's slightly optically better I wouldn't replace my mark 1 version. Check out my 10 year review of the now bargain 24-70 mk1
You always mention that the camera L series lenses are expensive. Can you recommend a lens around this focal length, at least f/2.8, and preferably weather sealed (but not necessary)?
The new Tamron 24-70mm G2 should be pretty good
do a vs f2.8 and f4 and show us what the best of both of them
Yeah chris please do that
thanks louis
I still can't decide if giving up IS is worth the f2.8. I would rather have it just incase i need it as it always comes in handy.
i have the f4 lens love it not only you got IS you also have macro if you want it and the photo's are always good like a L lens douse from what i have worked out the f2.8 at 2x the money is like 3-5% sharper
Can you try this lens with adpter on a r6/5?
Tamron 24-70mm VC.. Please!!
hi, I m gona buy 5dm4 very soon. I m confused between 24-70 f4L IS and 24-70 f2.8L II lenses...I am a hobbyist and do general purpose photography under various different lightning conditions and scenarios, i don't earn or do business through photography, its just my passion. i hardly do videos, lets say only 10%, 90% i do photos. what should i consider...Image stabilization of F4 or extreme sharpness of f2.8? thanks
It's up to you really! I can't make that decision for you. For what it's worth I'd rather have the f/2.8. And remember, Tamron make an image stabilized one
Will this work on the 250d?
In the Verdict i really missed the mention of the missing IS again. For this price it is outrageous. I can understand Canons marketing if they hold back on certain features to keep their other products valuable but not including IS in a 2000 € lens is a complete mess.
Cost $3,999 in Australia and for second hand it’s $1999
Hi Chris; Which do you think would be the best alternative to this lens?
Victor Peña Orrego Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD
Christopher Frost Photography Thank you for the answer. I love your videos!
I have been debating between the tamron 24 70 f2.8 G2 and this one. For a hobbyist, which one is better?
Tamron
You got itttttt
I don't know if you would remember but did you experience any clicking noise when using the zoom ring. I just recently bought mine and have that issue at the moment.
Hmm, no I didn't.
Silent778 I have the same issue, I just live with it now. How about you?
Hi. Quick question: If I have this lens, do I REALLY need the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens?
Your backgrounds can get more out of focus with the 85mm f/1.8...but not that much more
Do the lens correction features on 80d work or are effective when shooting raw?
I think they only work when shooting jpeg - not sure, really. Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Hi, I'm curious, how important is image stabilization, and how big of a difference will it make in still photography? Thanks!
Frank Ding Depends what you're doing. It's more important as you zoom in, and very useful for shooting in low-light
Christopher Frost Photography So it does make a significant difference in image quality, especially when shooting at slower shutter speeds?
Frank Ding Yes, unless you have very steady hands
Christopher Frost Photography I see. Thanks for the quick replies!
what about astrofotographie?
Hey Chris, great review as always. The only thing Canon will have to worry about would be if Sigma releases an Art version of the 24 -70mm 2.8 with OS
That lens would be a very high quality lens that would probably compete with Canon & Nikon's high end glass very well
Pieter Knickerbocker that is true, and I hear great things about it. Though with how well sigma is building their Art line up. I think if they built a version with OS it would blow them all away. And or force Canon/Nikon to put Image Stabilization in their 24-70 2.8 to compete
Brian Michael Sigma hasn't done it yet.... I'm waiting for an amazing 24-70 or 18-55 from them and less then $1200 hopefully.
oasisbeyond if they do an Art version of the 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8, chances are is that it will be a lil more than $1200 but probably not more than $1500
I have a sigma 17-50 2.8 non Art and I love it
Brian Michael Hahaha they did lol.
1:07 Maybe it's just me but I feel like the shot got darker as he zoomed in
He was in video mode you can see plants dancing in the background. I think exposure was on auto and adapt itself during the zoom in.
thumb up for NIV
Hi Christopher Frost Photography
I have question about the sharpness in the corner when the lens are at aperture 2.8.
If your focus is in the centre of the picture, the corner are notable further away from the camera then the centre when you are shooting a house of this distance, are there not bokeh we see and not the bad sharpness of the lens?
Chris if one could get this for 1k US dollars would that be a good deal. Basically the same price you would pay for the Tamron or Sigma brand new
canon 24 70 f2.8 ii Why nobody says that this object falls out gum on zoom
I was hoping this would be a better in corners. I hated the v1 of this lens and, as a zeiss collector/user, I had a contax 24-85 converted to EOS. That lens is failing and there are no parts, so I've bought the tamron 45 and 85 to give me AF in that range. Got any recommendations? I also upgraded my canon 16-35 2.8II to the f4IS.
If this lens isn't good enough for you, you'll have to stick with prime lenses I'm afraid
Yeah, I just spent some time with my choices. The 24-70II is far weaker at 70mm than my Tamron SP85, somewhat weaker at 50 than the Tamron 45SP, and pretty much ties with my Zeiss 25/2 at 24mm. Saturation and micro contrast are very nice on all 4. But the 24-70II blows away my Zeiss 28/2, lol, my favorite lens. Nothing matters but use.
Hey Chris Canon made a lens back in the film days called the 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 USM. I found a copy for 55$ USD on eBay. The focus is amazing and fast. Could you review it and maybe compare it to the 70-300mm lens? thanks
See how good it is and let me know :-) I'm probably not going to cover it as I want to take time reviewing more modern lenses first.
No IS? sad.
dear chris.. can u make review of Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L USM IS...
+mc sabai One day I will, not any time soon though, I'm afraid
Hey ! He recently made a video on it ! Go check it out :)
just got one
If I had to choose between the canon 24-70mm f2.8 or the canon 35mm f4, which one is better for photos, bokeh and video??help me please 😭😭
If you're not sure what you want then it could be best to go for the zoom lens for the moment
Christopher Frost Photography thank you
I want to buy it
Hi Cris How about APS H Camera you think the sharpness is the same of APS C? hoping for your reply :)
APS-H...that's a bit old school these days!
Christopher Frost Photography thanks for the reply.. anyway not really my Camera is Canon 1d markiv
and still expensive than canon 6d and canon 7d markii :)
L♥ve your reviews
This lens is optically brilliant, but it is not tough, it can't even survive a kindergarten let alone a warzone, I had mine broken as it fell from a hight of 80cm (2.62ft), the shock damaged the circuit board rendering the autofocus unoperational, Canon said it is damaged beyond repair and it was a camera shop that offers repair that figured out the problem and replaced the circuit board from another broken 24-70 2, although I stand by recommending this lens I recommend those who prioritize toughness to stick with the mark 1 or develop skills to avoid exposing this plastic lens to shocks, Nikon shooters will have a 24-70 that stands in between the canon offering in both the optical performance and ruggedness
so, this is sharper than the original mk I 24-70?
Yes. I had the original one and the MK2 Is way better and I only got mines for 1100$ in mint condition.
I miss Cardiff 😞❤️❤️
The lens is no longer a "24-70" once you place it on a cropped sensor camera, It now becomes a 38-112 mm L lens lol. But I am getting this lens soon for my 6D, I been eyeing this lens for a long time.
Yes it is. The focal length doesn’t change, but that field of view changes as the image is cropped. Still a 24-70 lens with the same compression.
I’m considering getting this lens but decided to give it a pass because my camera body does not have IS.
What is with that background Muzak? I don't need to hear that I need to hear YOU!
It is not worth the upgrade from the original 24-70 f2.8L MKl
+Freddie Slaughter it is worth the upgrade specially if you can find one second hand. This being said version I was quite good as well.
Ohm it really is! The original 24-70 wasn't a great upgrade from the 28-70 though. Both were pretty horrid IMO. Soft and flat. When I used them, I had just come from Leica, so maybe my view was tainted. As much as this lens might not be perfection, it's much better. I wonder what happened in Canon between this release in 2012 and the 2014-16 designs. Newer ones are much better overall, but this is no slouch.
One and a half thousand = 1500 gbp ? Right ?
Hanan Aman Yup.
Thanks
External zoom...no IS...original price $1899...REALLY?
Hard to find a zoom 24-70 mm which doesn't zoom "externally". Internal zoom is more usually seen at ultra wide zooms or telephoto zooms, but this lens starts at wide and goes to short-telephoto. Greetings from Brazil.
Nice movie ;)
love your videos, but Im going crazy with this song always the same.
Does it has is
I had this Lens for 200€ i was so lucky
Camera...Camar...Caman...Canan... Canon
