      @@fullandstarving Yes. I've been fortunate to own many incredible lenses but I've never seen images jump out at me from the back of my camera like those that come from this lens. For me it just has a way of capturing contrast and color the way I've always wished. I shoot with a 5dmkiv.

    Can't wait for you to get an EOS RP or a used EOS R. Really want to see your results with the RF lenses. As a side note, I think the slightly lesser sharpness in this lens is why the new RF 85s do not come with IS.
    From nitpicking on your video..I haven't used this lens personally and I may find it plenty sharp for my use.

      True to some extent, though the tamron 85mm f1.8 is noticeably sharper than the canon in comparative tests even with IS and even with the canon stopped down.

    Sharpness isn't everything; none of your clients will notice. Atleast this thing nails down focus every time. Sigma's focus inconsistency made me get rid of the art glass. The canon sure is A LOT faster aswell + IS.. much more practical.

    • @kikipratama1
      @kikipratama1 5 років тому +7

      That's what I have experienced with the Sigma.
      It really is the sharpest lens I've owned but... only impressive if you can make it practical.
      The weight destroyed the sharpness in slower shutter shots in low-light portrait, unless I use tripods.
      My client yawned, tired of waiting me prepared and repeating the same shots due to AF issues.

      @@Johanreyfoto I did. Even tried to combine it with Canon's micro-adjustment.
      It makes zero consistency through viewfinder, but always nailed using DPAF in Live View. Exactly what Christhoper explained in a separate video about the 85mm Sigma.
      If I were using EOS R, I might still love the Sigmas.

      I have the original Sigma 85 1.4 [Pre-Art series]. Sharpest lens I have, but as you say, that focus would only work when it wanted to.
      Pity.

    • @kikipratama1
      @kikipratama1 5 років тому

      @@stans5270 If you use sensor based AF, you might find it focused more often. That is, unless you gone mirrorless, you have to shoot using the back screen on DSLR.
      But the reason we shoot through viewfinder is to make it less prone to camera shake. If the lens so heavy, in critical light situation you might have to use tripod everytime which is not practical to do generic shots.

    I know nikon uses lens corrections built into their cameras. I think when you put the Canon lens on the Sony, you got to see how much these automatic in-camera lens corrections perform. I know my Nikon D700 can correct a fair bit distortion and color fringing automatically though it isn't perfect when you're using vintage glass, it's still useful. Good to see Canon seems to do this too.

    As your subscriber i want to suggest couple thing that you can considering it has to be done or not..
    1. can you provide the file of test chart you do in some gdrive or dropbox? Since its hard to see in detail at my 5inch android
    2. Can you ( in next videos) tell something about lens color rendering? I know it sometimes very subjective but atleast we got the starting point..like me, i always like and try some of canon L lense color rendering (1740, 70200, 2470, 24105) more than sigma 1835 f1.8 IN TERM OF COLOR RENDERING
    I suggest you to do this since sometimes i got "cheated" ( not from your reviews ☺) as everybody always talk about SHARP SHARP AND SHARP , nobody mention about color reproduction and i may be a good idea for you to do as differetiator from another yutub reviewer
    And last, since english is not my primary language, sorry for anything wrong and hope you got what my point is 🙏🙏

      It's the contrast level that you probably care. The one that makes your shots popped, and color feel natural. Still great in harsh daylight like Indonesia.
      This prime will sharper than any of your mentioned Canon zoom. Even the 50 f/1.8 does.
      I think the f1.2 version is a tiny bit more contrasty, but not sharper than this one.

      Tapi beneran sih. Kalau dibanding Sigma ART, sebenernya Canon L gak pernah tajem sebanding. Tapi daya kontras dan tangkapan detilnya bagus. Jadi seolah ilusi kalau lensa Canon berasa tajem.
      Lensa Sigma ART juga banyak yang berat. Sering kedapetan yang AFnya suka meleset kalau motret lewat viewfinder, apalagi DSLR baru. Motret lewat LCD yang ber-DPAF bisa akurat, tapi jadi susah stabil.
      Sayang juga punya lensa tajam kalau motretnya goyang atau gak praktis. Gak produktif.

    • @AcidTripwire
      @AcidTripwire 5 років тому +1

      @@TonymanCS Partly true, the center of the lens is where the best glass is, but the only advantage of putting a full frame lens on a crop camera is that you can get 1.6x closer to your
      subject in a way that is less destructive than cropping in post, and you don't have to worry about vignetting or corner distortion, as you said. When you only use a small portion of glass from the center of the lens, that glass is not capable of producing enough resolution to match the high pixel density of the sensor. Full frame lenses are simply not as sharp when used on a crop camera and never will be unless there is some miracle breakthrough in lens engineering. Only using the center of the lens will also highlight any imperfections in the glass and make them more obvious.

    About weight.. If you want full frame and professional level equipment, you have to be strong. There are excellent micro four thirds and APS-C cameras that offer professional level build quality at half the weight. If you're a budding photographer and you want full frame with professional glass then you're going to have to carry that weight. There are better full frame options if you need to take your gear traveling but you'll have to use slower lenses. Rant over. I love a heavy body and lens. I weigh 70kg and can carry 20kg of gear for over four hours on foot through Bangkok. My secret: a gym membership. Professional equipment should never be criticized for weight unless it is unnecessary weight of course like the metal body Sigma 105mm Art. No need for complete metal bodies anyways especially in 35 degree heat.

    I don't understand when sigma art is always mentioned how sharp it is but hard to compare when sigma is not weather sealed. I would use sigma art all the time if it was weather sealed. Without that one can think about having it on a pro. camera body and getting caught in the rain could ruin the lense and camera body too.

    • @ralphsaad8637
      @ralphsaad8637 Рік тому

      It is weather sealed, though probably not to the same degree as the canon. However there was another option at the time which was sharper, had IS, extensive and possibly better build quality and weather sealing, almost as good weather sealing and bokeh but slightly darker aperture. That was the tamron 85mm f1.8, sadly overlooked by many photographers due to having f1.8 instead of f1.4. The tamron was also MUCH cheaper.

    I think it a little unfair to blame a Canon lens for purple fringing when you're using a Sony Camera with an adapter. Who's to say it's not the Sony and adapter causing the issue? It should be tested on a 5DS or DS-R for high MP tests, and then if still having fringing issues, so be it. I'll even accede the sharpness to the Art lens, but I can't agree with an adapted camera when doing a critical test.

      No, but it can extend or shorten the focal point, which can alter the lengths of the glass to the sensor.

      Joe, you are incorrect. The adaptor contains nothing but air. It does not affect image quality at all. As for 'extend or shorten the focal point', well, that's what focusing is for.

      No, if the focal plane is required to be (for example) exactly 2.3 mm from the sensor, and the adapter is 2.35, all the AF in the world is not going to correct the resultant chromatic aberration. I'm an astronomer- we see this problem all the time in telescopes when trying to adapt different visual backs. Incorrectly distanced backs will make a perfect apochromatic refractor telescope go all aberrant. Same principle- the back mirror (or the first lens of the eyepiece) is not the exact distance needed from the focal point, so it starts to separate the light waves into red, green and blue.

      @christopherfrost  5 років тому

      @@aceflibble You're assuming there that the adaptor isn't flocked properly (my one is) - and also, the difference in individual sensor microlenses that you describe is only really going to affect vignetting levels on very wide angle lenses. You're also assuming that the adaptor is slightly the wrong size - even the cheaper ones are precision manufactured to be correct.

  • @klarion

    Sharpness alone does not equate to image quality... if you can't focus your lens reliable, that will affect image quality, so will unreasonable compression, color, rendering, etc.. Sigma started producing huge well-corrected lenses at the expense of everything else... character, AF, rendering.

    Your sample headshots are usually not well-edited for brightness/contrast. They are often yellowish; would be great if you can correct this. For portrait lenses review, please show more sample shots of the human face as some photographers prefer a lens that is not brutally sharp (eg, in the 1980s, the Nikon 105 f2.5 lens is very desirable for taking pleasant headshots).

    This review cannot be further from the real-world usage of the lens. Nobody cares in real life about vignetting or sharpness in the corners. If you shot people you WANT dark fuzzy corners. Often you have to shoot with a distorted lens to make them less fat. Women are now used to 28mm from the iPhone they are not comfortable with pictures made with 85mm or 135mm lens.
    In real life you will have 2-3x times more sharp pictures with Canon, then Sigma. Because you will get much, much more successful pictures thanks to the IS, better and faster autofocus. That is what counts on this lens and in real life. Not corner at f8.
    Handheld video on both full frame and crop are a huge advantage of this lens and only this lens when it comes to short telephoto and large aperture.
    You cannot ignore focus precision, mention speed in one sentence and bokeh in just a few of them. You have to change your methodology. People that watch your videos would think sharpness is the most important thing on the lens. And that is not the case.
