Canons 24-70 MKI and MKII f2.8 head to head comparison

- The older 24-70 f/2.8 lens still has a lot of fight left in it, especially if you're using a full frame camera, and nowadays, it would certainly represent better value for money than its replacement. But the extra resolving power of the new mark 2 lens is seriously impressive, and could make a big difference for crucial pictures. Professional photographers should get their credit cards ready for a serious hit!!
Looking at the comments contained within this video many of you have made your mind up, but who is the real winner? Watch our Canon 24-70 1 vs 2 shootout, we would love to hear your opinion.
This must be Christopher Frost!
I know that voice anywhere!
Me too and I am Italian!!!!
he has a very nice voice indeed
Yes... the voice and the video.
Can't mistake his voice for anyone else. :D
It’s so sad hearing Chris without the waiting room piano music in the background
I noticed these differences...
1.The v1 has slightly less barrel distortion than the v2 at 24.
2. In the closeup test the v1 is as sharp as v2 @F4, and sharper at F5.6. Look at the letter. There is blurr around the v2 and on the v1 it is sharper.
3. On the flair, while the v1 was larger, it was more faint, and transparent. The v2 was much more opaque yet smaller.
I like the size of the v2, and the sharpness.
This is one of the most epic comparison videos I've seen on lenses. You actually cover very detailed specifics which most other videos are lacking. Thank you!
The light on the wall was not the same so it influenced the result. You should put cameras one above each other and not few meters from each other AND THEN shoot.
Very good review! You cover all the key points very in-depth.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you :-)
Dangit! Man!
I just got the 24-70mm 2.8 MKii second hand, and only now I realized I may have been mistaken in my choice, and I actually preferred the MKi for its much much nicer lens flare pattern, and colors!
I own the Sigma 24-70, the Tamron 24-70 with its VC stabilizer, and I always dreamed of the image quality, DOF-look and lens flare of Canon's 24-70. So, now I finally got it, and I forgot there were 2 versions of it :\
Sounds weird, but I rather downgrade...gotta find someone that will swap with me..
[yes, im not hunting for an uber-sharp image..]
eladbari Still looking for somebody to do a lens swap with for the mark i?
I still need to test & compare, but I cant do that internationally, man. Im not in the U.S :\
as soon as the videos started, i recognised your voice form the other channel Cristopher Frost, i immediately subscribed as i never buy a lens without checking your reviews.
i wish one day you revisit these old videos and re review the lenses and and show us how they perform on newer demanding apcs camera like the 90D ( resolving power is now a very important factor for picking up a lens )
many thanks mate
Great review. What do you think of 'Canon 24-70mm F4 L' vs 'Canon 24-70mm F2.8L mark ii' vs 'Canon 24-70mm F2.8L mark i'
We've not used the f4 version of Canons 24-70mm, I hope to get some in soon and as soon as we do we will be reviewing it.
Great comparison! What do you think about the 24-70 f2.8 L. Is it sharp enough for 4K video on the R5?
wondering the same thing for my R6 M2!
I have the new one and it feels like crap compared to the old one. The new one has superior optics of the two. Old has superior build quality, new one has superior optics
Good video! Thanks!
I've been using my Mk I for a couple of years now and I'm still very happy with it as my all-purpose-lens. Not worth upgrading for me, especially considering that I got mine for really cheap.
Thank you, they're built well, hopefully your lens will last for many more years...
I look for Image quality, build quality as well as price in chosing a lens for my 5D MK3 and I only buy L lens. This updated lens is not worth the extra money, hands down.
Freddie Slaughter
Thanks a million plus one, Fred. I was wondering if it was a major difference or not? I can buy a used MKI for $840.00 in excellent condition, but I was on the fence about it. Or maybe the MKII? I think I will save my $$ and go with the MKI.
They're both great lenses. My personal choice would be to go for the MKII, having used both lenses extensively I can see difference in picture quality. Since making this review the price of the MKII has come down considerably... Many thanks, Martin
Is that you Mr. Christofer FROST?
Is in camera sharpness really that important? Or can it be tweaked to the same degree in post?
Fake sharpness is like fake tits.
How much price 24-70f mark ll
Isn't this Christopher Frost?
sure sounds like him
expensive but no IS
No image stabilization 🤦🏾♂️
Nice review, but you sound like a voice generator :)
Christopher Frost ? Second channel maybe ?
Hi, Chris, the predecessor Canon EF 2.8/28-70mm L USM has a good reputation. It is supposedly better than the 24-70 Mk. I. I have the Canon EF 2.8-4.0/28-80mm L USM, which is also a great performer. Best wishes Ralf
V1 was fantastic. I've made a lot of $ using it. But I have to admit, V2 is even better. I'm impressed with the sharpness and image quality. Either one will serve a pro photographer well.
Wooooooow, Christopher on another channel !
Very useful comparison, thanks.
Thanks for watching :-)
Mark I is much better value these days. As I've looked at the evilBay the old one seems to be literally 5 times cheaper then the new one.
Haha, the evil eBay! 5x cheaper is a bit of a tall ask though...
laszu I got mine for $400 on Ebay. Great condition.
@@arturoalvarado4030That's awesome Art. With my luck I will get a paper weight ...Thanks for the tip, I will take a gander.
@@arturoalvarado4030 I got mines for 340$ in nearly new condition.
We meet again, Mr. Frost....
(love your work)
Of course it is he!! Cristopher frost hahaha
What a good analysis. Very useful too. Cheers!. I subscribe.
This voice....I think I heard it somewhere
Fantastic video. Thanks so much
Wait... you have more than one channel?
Im wanting a good lens for fashion photography. Mainly for early evening on location fashion photography using off camera strobe lighting and led fill lighting. Would you say i would need the f2.8 or the f4 version of this lens. Im not shooting weddings in low light but i do have the money to spend on the 2.8 ver only i do like the smaller form factor of the f4 ver and that it had IS and Macro mode. would you recommend the f4 24-70 for my type of work or should i get the 2.8?
Thanks for your help :-)
+KLIQUE EJECT I haven't triwd the f4 version, however the 2.8 MKII is really sharp I highly recommend it, many thanks for watching
Fast forward a couple of years... I wonder which lens you did end up with. I am looking at them for similar reasons as you did back then.
I have a 24-105 mm f / 4. I want to buy this. Do you think you'll feel much difference the lack of IS? The pictures will be blurry?
You can buy 24-70 v2 (or a v1 for the price) if you REALLY need f 2.8 on this focal range. Or if you're a pro user (for work).
In other cases, 24-105 f4 is a very good lens if you use it as "factotum" and if you don't want to be redundant on focal range.
yes he is look at his thumb
Big up to Cardiff !!!
What about af speed? Is Mark I lacking behind?
Awhhh... Christopher
Why do u sound like christopher😂😂😂
Does mk I have macro and ii doesn't
Have you tested this using tripod Or handheld?.
thanks for your in-depth reviews :) they've really been very helpful
Thanks Joshua, there are plenty more on the way.
Are these lenses both weather sealed?
Yes
How about the 24-70/f4 ?
I'm a bit confused, could anyone clarify for me, why is it sharper on f4, rather then 2.8?
I believe it is due to the amount of light that is coming into the lens. Also, at 2.8 I would think there'd be a bit of stretching of the image and lower focal range. (what is in focus).
thanks

Christopher Frost?????
perfect, so tenkyuu
Thank you
seems very little in it.
I've got this 18-400mm tamron lens and it's fantastic:
amzn.to/3aRUZ5Y
if you don't want to switch lens (or you can't because you are travelling) this is the right solution.
So honestly its minor upgrades.
Not really. The mark ii is more flat plane
Wonderful comparison!
No people, this is not Christopher Frost. He's just British.
Of course it is - nobody else says cama-ahh :-)
