Yes, but it would be unfair to hold it to the standards of the hydaelyn & zodiark saga. Ffxiv writers are phenomenal writers. Unless the wow lore team bring in a storytelling genius, they’ll never come near ffxiv’s storytelling

The Age of Mortals lasted 5 expansions, and with Mists, WoD, Legion, BFA, and Shadowlands. I would say it was truly an epic journey.

Has WoW ever had a plan? They've always just been doing things they think is cool. That's why expansions have generally been stand alone stories.

Anyone else notice Expac 1 takes place in the “old world” but part of Kalimdor (vanilla), then 2, Quel Thalas (TBC), then 3, Northrend (WotLK)? Js, reinvigorating the OG map and the first 2 expansions, kinda a smart move.
I doubt every zone gets a revamp though. Still, as long as there is a long term plan to reintroduce old zones, then hopefully they all get updated eventually.
Also the fact that the leaks said yearly expansions and they didn't say when these will release. Makes me worry these are just paid patches

Chances are they will just add an entirely different instance of that zone, kinda like how you can still do the nelf starting zone even though it’s burned down. They won’t do anything cool

I don't understand why WoW fans are so against accepting that many people actually have quit for good, maybe they don't want to believe others have the ability to quit because they themselves can't. But many do just that every year.

Plain and simple, Chris was the lead in the BEST expansions, we went through a "meh" stage...but now hes BACK
The fact alone they announced this is over the course of 3 expansions is big.
Because it means they can take more time with fleshing out systems and also the overall story. Make it not feel rushed.
Still potential for every point in this story to get rushed, but if they've really adjusted to player feedback then maybe it will be good.

The conspiracy in the third of those expansions will turn out to be that they're all characters in a videogame, and then they'll travel to the real world to fight Blizzard, ending with the creation of WoW 2.

He's the one who actually write the lore of Warcraft back in Warcraft 2 and 3, and WoW Vanilla, after that I can't find sources of what he has done narratively wise though. So maybe Blizzard just realized that they needed THE MAN, to make the story great again !

Legendary hero travels through Azeroth solving crisis like we once did, Vanilla 2 or something. And while we're at it, make it in a new engine, WoW 2. Or something, there are N ways they could have done this without adding "new bad who was apparently just chilling through all this time and we never noticed"

They should give Chris Metzen all the power over the story because this, for once, actually sounds like a warcraft story. It's been a while since anything in WoW felt like warcraft, Chris knows how to do it. It might sound mean, but 50 year old women do not know how to do it.

@@HaskerHiemstra I’m not against it if the content and pacing of content is good. I’m optimistic at this point, but let’s be honest. Dragon flight is boring. Story is lame and it’s too bright/bubbly/cute. Mythic+ is boring and good luck on finding a mythic guild for raiding. Hopefully they change things in the next xpac.

Great to see Metzen back on stage, but I'm not optimistic for this at all.
The 3 expansion thing sounds like they are just going to cut one expansion down into 3 and just churn them out every year. If they had any balls they would/should culminate the story with Azeroth finally awakening, the planet explodes and she shepherds the surviving races to a newplanet for WoW2.

Honestly I think the expansions won't be cut short or anything but metzen instead made sure that the blizz suits understand that their recent stories are lacking and even if they have good writers one Expansion isn't quite enough to tell a solid and deep story. For me personally I think metzen took notes from FFXIVs storytelling which is a good thing and that one happened over many many expabsions. So yeah. Let's be carefully optimistic. Carefully.

My belief things will turn around still practically non existent.
I started playing back in 2005. Since then, I've played all the expansions except BFA. But for the last four expansions, I've only returned for three months at most. It's all the same old stuff, just repackaged. I don't want to waste my time anymore, so I'm kinda relieved to hear that three more expansions won't bring any major changes. It lets me steer clear of them and focus on life and other games :)
I would be pumped for a complete overhaul of Classic WoW, though. It doesn't have to be a 1:1 replica of Classic - I'm not on the same page as Asmon about that. I just want the game remade/remastered the right way.
My fear is that the saga-expansionswill be shorter and they still cost for full price and will fell more like major patches than an expansion.

Metzen will have a hard job ahead of him to catch up with FFXIV in terms of writing. At the very least, I hope that they follow their model: that each expansion will have a full story from the get go, with the patches merely making the junction between them, rather than a X.0 expansion that opens half-a-dozen threads and solves none by the time you are at max level.

Like if Legion wasn't a big retcon with plenty of nostalgia bait to fix Burning Crusade, where they turned Team Illidan into loot pinatas without giving too much thought to it.
I like the guy and can't deny his part in overall worldbuilding (including art style, going all the way back into 90's) and passion for the game, but Blizzard were never that great storytellers. Memorable places and characters, great cinematics, but overall plot is pretty ehhhh. Goes for other games too, like Starcraft 2. Even classics like Starcraft or Warcraft 3 couldn't always make sense.
The Tail in Gundrak foretold the Return of the Titans, Chris told us oh so many years ago, and Medivh will be fucking them.
Finally seeing Chris Metzen return is like seeing your dad return from buying milk

ANET pulled this with Icebrood and the reception backfired. Most of it was negative at the announcement. Let's hope the execution for WoW is better, and let's see if they cut corners to make a quick buck like ANET did or properly lengthen the series out so it feels like we want to waste our time exploring it.
First thing that came to my mind is how big are the single expansions, and how much are they. This may be a ploy to get three times the sales for the same content one expansion had in the past. I dont play anymore, but that would be a blizzard/microsoft move XD I only follow for the lore now.
I feel like announcing 3 at the same time was a terrible idea. They didn't focus enough on the features, and now much of the upcoming story will be spoiled in advance.

Before blizzcon I was like, yeah DF is my last expansion in WoW and finaly after many years, I will end my story (started at the end of WoD, not mentioning several years back in private servers).... But then, suddenly ou of thin air, OG Chris Metzen stand up and said to me (and others) loudly and epicly AF "Give me 3 expansions to correct this sh*t mess that we currently have" and instantly I was in.... My story doesn't end.
TLDR: Chris, Take my money. I am buying it all!

Hopefully they'll copy from ff14 and make it to where you have to play these expansions back to back instead of be able to skip the story. That's always been a problem with wow, where someone like me who didn't truly start till BFA has no real investment in a lot of characters I met.

Honestly if they stripped back the UI and did a kind of simplification of game mechanics and I didn’t feel like I’d be bored by the time I knew how to play the game properly I’d try retail expansions when they come out.
Can’t decide if this is exciting because they are actually planning the story out somewhat or if this is horrifying because Marvelitis has burned me out on knowing plans so far ahead

- Hearthstone: Just a cheap attempt to raise the player count
- WoW: Just a normal expansion (framed as a revolution)
- Warcraft Rumble: The whole game is a recylced game
- Diablo 4: One of the big announced features is a search bar in the inventory

Well this Blizzcon confirmed to me that not only blizzard is dead, but also, they seem to not have any funding left behind their games. It clearly shows by the wow new “thrall and anduin therapy session” trailer and overwatch “ power point slide show” new hero trailer…

Metzen returns and the through the voice of Thrall he shows just how ambitious the wow team is, and it's extremely impressive.
"War within" shows a lot of promise, though I am no fan of the new race we can play as nor am I too stoked to not see any level cap announcements.
"Midnight"... a return to Quel'Thalas is long overdue, but the whole phrasing of returning to old Azeroth and uniting the elven tribes in defence of the sunwell against the void gives me vibes of time travelling, which is unnerving, despite speaking about the shadow being banished forever... I'm just worried. But lots of Blood elves, NIght borne and nightelves sounds good, though it appears obvious they'll all be forced to play second fiddle to the void elves. There's also a miniscule chance that Naga are considered part of the elves and can bring us a truckload of new zones around quel'thalas, reefs, islands and maybe ancient highborne cities (who am I kidding, of course it'll be there!).
"The Last Titan": An ancient conspiracy has been teased for several expansions now, ever since it was explained that the chronicles were from a titan perspective instead of being the definitive history of the universe. I just hope our return to Northrend lets us see a change to the entire continent and lets us see just how crazy the continent can be if it's not the Lich king running the show.

metzen said they're working on getting the "expansions" to us faster than we're used to, to me that sounds like less content aka big patches sold as full priced expansions probably 1 a year. not good, blizz getting even more greedy
