I agree It's totally unfair, there are other webtoon sites that hold contests that judge 100% on their own board, and 0% on audience. But of course they are a little more demanding on the number of panels. I believe the webtoon staffs choose what they think would be best and what the LIKE. it really is quite unfair for creators...
@@sarahyee6999 it's not unfair cause they didn't wait the contest to build an audience and it's 100% fair for them to gain from their labor before the contest all those years working on discover whithout on confirmation of being able to make it.
> audience engagement is important and plays a role in judging you say this, but isn’t it unfair when you put 2+ contest entries into the recommendation tab? you’re letting a select few webtoons have an advantage. you’re rigging your own contest. i have many friends joining the contest and it’s sad to see them work, cry and stress for a sub while already popular webtoons (for the contest) get a chance to be even more popular. i dont understand the decision to include contest entries into the recommended tab at all. its discouraging to know you’re choosing favorites, or at least what seems like it. edit: sorry if i sound angry, im just confused with the decision!!
Honestly it is quite sad, and i also can understand the stress of making a single episode, i entered the contest with a story i called the girl born from the sea, but ended up having to quit because i don't ewn a computer or drawing tablet, i made the first episode on my mom's laptop on the mouse pad, i spent 10 hours making the first episode and it ended up like crap.
IAm IsWorthlessGarbage : oh man same im actually participating as well, though i know the chances of me actually winning are slim. i agree though, i dropped plenty of hours into making my prologue but im unhappy with the outcome so ill be redoing it once i get the time JCJDJF.... sorry to hear about your situation though! i hope you can get a tablet and pc soon!
noot noot Ha thanks, i do own a computer that I've had for 2 years but my parents never set it up, it's old and i doubt it could handle a drawing tablet, though I've been asking for a laptop since i was 8 so, I'VE BEEN ASKING FOR ONE FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS! some girls ask for ponies when they're young, but not me i ask for a laptop! Honestly though i have been saving up for a tablet! I have about $60 saved but i don't really get an allowance, so i have to depend on babysitting which is a rare occurrence.
This should really be addressed tbh, but on the other hand im not sure which ones on discover are part of the contest or which have been there before it started so oof. But i can see where favoritism could come into play by pushing more of the popular entries to the recommended, unless there's some sort of recommendation algorithim that just generates them based on some kind of requirements??
SleepyDair : if you’re on mobile, you can go to discover and click the 2018 contest banner and you should be able to see the entries! as far as i know, recommendation seems to be handpicked and shown to everyone because everyone i know so far has seen the same things.
Hearing the note about uploading an existing one is such a relief!! I had just started one when I heard about the contest and thought I had missed out completely. Thank you so much!
So only featured creators? Because If not #1 Lackadaisy- The best art on Webtoons, the level of render is Gosh... The best #2 Unordinary #3 Phantom Paradise #4 Sirens Lament
I love yoo for including Hooky on that list, but my question is, why isn't it number one? Ha... You don't have to answer, it's just my favorite and number one on my list.
If audience engagement is so important, why do you do favoritism and promote already popular webtoons on the top page of discover ? Also does that mean that the ones with a huge fanbase are going to win ??? Oh, and how about these readers and creators who purposely downrate every webtoons just to support a creator in particular ? Not everyone have the chance to be popular on social medias, not everyone can promote their work like some creators do. What is the point of pouring tears, sweat, love and hours of work in something that is never going to win ? what is the point of joining a contest, supposed to be fair, when it's so unfair? And what is the point of a contest that makes popular creators even more popular...? As a creator myself, I'm disappointed... really. You could say it's my fault for not being talented enough, but when other creators have all their chances to win, with a great plot and amazing art get so few attention, well i'm 99,9% sure it's not only bcz i'm not talented enough. Please make a FAIR contest. Edit : please webtoon, don't ignore this.
I'm not trying to reply in Webtoon's place, and I totally understand what you're saying. I myself would like an answer from Webtoons as well, but I've heard some arguments others have made and would like to lay them out. (Please don't hate me, I would also like some feedback about this contest.) To start off, I personally noticed my work got a smidgen more attention once Webtoons made a tab on their app that places all the contest entries into one place. Yes, this means it's easier for downvoters to find you, but it also means more exposure(?) It makes sense that Webtoons would want a comic that is both appealing to the masses AND professional. It doesn't matter how well your artwork is if it's something for a very select audience. The webtoons tab might fix the playing level on that aspect. Just a bit. Also, just because you've had a large fanbase from before, (especially if it's from the same comic from Discover), then it could be that if Webtoons wanted to feature you, they would've done so already. Yes, I guess they just never saw the said work, but I doubt that would be the case. It could be the art style, it could be the story; something didn't click for the front page, but sure did get a large fanbase. That's why I think creators with large fanbases who are creating NEW comics are more of a threat. Especially if they're coming from a different site, as this contest *is* meant to attract new talent from different places. I've looked through the comic in the genre that I've submitted, and I already know there are quite a few that will be dismissed for breaking some copyright rules. (I don't think they meant to submit their work as a contest entry, it just happened to be that way...) This is not an argument but sometimes it does feel better looking over the competition. Most of the times our fears are blown out of proportion, and it's slightly relieving to see a definite number that you'll have to compete against, rather than the "unknown infinite number = the whole world". I am concerned when the new month will roll in, because I know popular creators from other sites will try uploading at that time. >.< Lastly, if I read the rules correctly, audience interaction makes up 40% of the total judging score. Which means that how you present your story makes up for more than half your total outcome. I plan to do my utmost and beyond; hope for the best, expect the worse. And honestly, even if I don't make it to featured, I do hope to find a lot of people who will enjoy my work. I think I can become satisfied with that. :D
because something evil happened in 2016 that made line suddenly market to americans and slow their korean content. i don't know what it was, but line webtoon in 2014 is completely different from this year.
i agree with 90% of your comment, but i gotta make myself clear on some points : - i'm not blaming the contest part of discover where all the contest entries are placed, i'm blaming the Discover recomandations, the first thing you see when you go on Discover. This is unfair that the already popular ones gets even more attention from this. - i'm not blaming the fanbase, i'm blaming the audience engagement which is 40% of the final note. this is H U G E. Like I said, most of us werent on discover for 2 whole years and most of us dont have 100k followers on social medias. Those who have a huge fanbase from discover and social medias already have these 40% of the note. Basically they already won, because they would have a huge fanbase if they werent good. But how about those who are good, those who are really good, but those who dont have a lot of followers anywhere ? yes. That's my point. They're underrated, they don't get the attention they deserve, and they stand no chance next to the others who are already popular from before the contest. I'm sorry if i sounded a bit rude, but i'm really upset about the contest at the moment
@Elisabeth 3rd No problem! This sounds so lame, but when I wrote my reply, I had just woke up. xD I'm glad you wrote back, no hurt feelings. :) I see your point more clearly, sorry I didn't understand. Hopefully, Webtoons will address these problems; I admit I haven't been on Webtoons for long, and I don't usually go searching for comics to read.

Really enjoying the engagement I got on my comic so far! I just entered with PSEUDO WINGS, a drama about outcast teens in an urban fantasy. Super grateful for people liking it no matter how much or little, I think that's the best way to look at the contest, just getting your stuff out there is a big step! Good luck to everyone else!
How are you going to check the entries? This might sound stupid but why do I feel that only the popular ones are going to be read and judged by the judges. Because there are thousands of entries as if now. A lot of them are scams. Again, I might be wrong but this seems more likely.
I have a question since audience engagement is important. Why are there some of the comic that is in the contest getting promotion? That seems to be unfair. Isn't that rigging the contest? I simply don't understand this logic if this contest is about discovering new creator. With the promotion isn't it showing favouritism. There is some creator that do not have a huge background of supporter and this contest can be helpful by promoting that they can have a chance to tell their story. The promotion is contradicting the meaning of this contest and only showing that the popular webtoon should be in the spotlight. I am sorry but I don't seem to understand this treatment with other creators who has work hard.
I agree. It's really disheartening to see that webtoons is putting contest entries into the recommended titles section of discover :/ That's literally the first thing people see when clicking on the discover tab (at least on desktop view of the website); it gives the selected recommended titles a /huge/ advantage in terms of publicity. The recommended titles are going to stay pinned up for about a month, where they'll obviously have a huge advantage to other contest entries... it sucks, because audience engagement is 40% of the judging criteria. In no world is it fair. :/
I agree so much.. Iam that low fan base creator who work hard making "cartoon-based comic" in webtoon indonesia and the audience never noticed my work.. Kids nowdays are crazy about romance and "mangas" and only romance webtoon get the spotlight here.. Im so sad, its like i have to automatically burn my dream only because of this. I changed my title and story many times to get into the audience, but what i did is no more than wasting time. I want to promote it outside indonesia but my account wont allow me.. If u guys want to see it, here's my work: www.webtoons.com/id/challenge/good-job-drodiboy-/list?title_no=295857
I love these two ladies vids! Especially the face close ups!! XD Info with entertainment, the best! You both need to do more of the interviews please~~
What is the name of your Webtoon? -- I’m making a comic "Mei's War" for the contest and making lots of effort with the art. The story was pretty though out since a long time ago but still working it! Looking forward to this! Good luck to everyone entering?
To answer the questions on how old you have to be to enter, You have to be at least 14. You can still enter the contest if you are below the age of 14 your parents have to fill out some paperwork on behalf of you. It is to allow you to be a part of the Webtoon team and allow you to travel until Sept 13. (I guess I didn't read it for a few days 😅)
Itz M don't be negative, there is always people who will support you. Even if you are not good enough, just try. Because if you don't try you won't improve. (I'm sorry if my English wasn't good , I'm French😅). And also Fighting!😊
Your skill in drawing shouldn't bother you so much. Just think of a way in which you can create good comic with what you are able to do. At least try so you can learn and improve. Hope you will be more positive about it. :D I had same thoughts as you so I understand. Just try.
I don't know if that whole "you can upload an existing series" thing is good for this contest. People who have a series that already has an audience will win over most newcomers simply because they already have that audience of fans that newcomers do not. It makes this contest unfair for new creators, don't you think? Edit: i'm joining either way, check out "mortal" by jason-san (that's me)
I entered with my webcomic "Heroic Daydreams" so that I finally make the comic. Most of the time I did rewrite the story but now I thought I should start drawing as well. I wish all good luck and I can´t wait for the best 8 to see the awesome new stories.
I cant enter, I have a story- but my skills are horrible. Another 2 years for me viciously training my art haha! However- I truly, truly hope that when I get my comic out- people will find it and enjoy it. I just want to inspire other artists of all types and bring new things to the table. No hints yet! Except that it will be a female lead in a scifi/romance genre. Good luck everyone on this contest. I will be reading.~
I'll be entering the contest under the title "Shaky Strokes" 😊 I'll be uploading it after my exams, more information will be available on my Instagram account @sibista ! Good luck to everyone✨
My fav Webtoons are..... Let's Play Boy friend of the dead I Love Yoo Sub Zero unOrdinary Adventures Of God Sweet Home Big Jo Lookism Eggnoid My Dear Cold-Blooded King Darbi Lumine Winter Woods My Giant Nerd Boyfriend ok literally every single one.
I'm entering with a webtoon called "My First Harem Anime Club?!" Also just as other people said it would be unfair if people who are new comers who doesn't have any audiences in numbers get any attention at all. There's many amazing stories being submitted weekly and they deserve the light as well just like anyone else. People who are already popular can just make another webtoon series and win cause they will have that support on their side. It should be a free for all for those to get a chance to be featured not for the number of likes or subscribers they have. Just my opinion.
I entered the contest, but ended up having to quit due to the complications of not having a drawing tablet, i spent 10 hours working on the first chapter but sadly its really bad. I might remake it later if i ever get a tablet but that doesn't seem anywhere close in the future.
My comic will be a slice of life and, by default it will probably be put in the best laughs category. I was wondering if I could change the category even though it is a slice of life for something like best feels since my story won’t be funny but more heartwarming
Does it have to be complete by the deadline, because me idea of the ending doesn’t have much to go forward. I do have ideas for storylines to keep the comic going, but I’m wondering if the series needs to have a definitive ending.
Hi I just wanted to ask if parodying another series for one panel is acceptable or if that goes against contest rules? Specifically asking about a reference to a meme from a cartoon television series. I drew my character in the same pose and facial expression.
Trying to ask a potential legal/ownership related question. If we enter the contest, or just publish on discover at all, can we later decide to move our comic somewhere else without repercussions?
What's da point in even doing a contest if you're gonna cheat that way webtoon? You say popularity is 40% but you cheat for your 2-3 most favorite webtoons by putting them no stop in as much as 3 section at the same time giving them the biggest boost and advantage over everyone else. . It's not fair to the other contestants who work so hard. You could've give them some type of respect by trying to keep things fair at least for the duration of the contest, is it too much to ask? Clearly you already decided who are the winners. Why don't you just feature your favorite artist instead of organizing this "next star" new contest when you have no intention of giving anyone a chance except for your 1-2 favorite that you give a giant advantage to. If you want them so bad, just feature them right away. I don't see the hurt in you featuring them right now and at least keep the contest a bit fairer. For a big company such as LINE to not even know the basic of a contest and cheat so dirtily, that's disappointing.
Cha Xon I agree with you definitely. Cause I feel at a disadvantage already and the title of my webtoon series is "My First Harem Anime Club?!" I don't have so much attention to it either and I'm not even a well known author or artist on there. I been told my art was good but it seems they only blow out who becomes famous or not based on what they like more instead of the audience. It makes me wanna give up all together.
My webtoon is a Comedy/ Slice of Life. Does each episode need to take the story forward? Currently each of my episodes is a story by itself. Also, do I need to have a Patreon account to participate in the Webtoon contest? Thanks!
Hey quick question, if you get to the point to go to nycc who pays for that and where would you stay? Would we have to pay our way there and find our own hotel? I ask because that’s a lot of money to send short notice and most of the prize money for that round would be spent on that.
Is there a disadvantage in posting the story later in the run of the contest? Like say posting it at the start vs. posting 2 weeks before the deadline?
Im guessing yeah because you'd be decreasing your chances of people viewing your webtoon and that's partly what they judge you on (according to the rules they posted)
Random Person idk maybe they will help the winner to go there or they just send the prize 😗😗??? Hope webtoon staff anwser your question😆😆😆😆and I also gonna ask that question too😅😅😅
The contract states that the NYC trip will be fully paid for by Webtoon no matter where you are in the world. I think the only exception is if you're under 18 yrs. Then you can't go to NYC due to legal reasons.
What I don’t really get is something about the panel and chapter pages, since is says “32+ panels, 4+ chapter” does this mean these are the minimum requirements? Also does the comic have to do a minimum of 32 panels in the minimum of 4 chapters? Can it be one chapter with 32+ panels?
Hi im making a webtoon! But...I haven't made an episode yet because im very insecure about my art and story that im making.... what should I do to stop this insecurities that holding me back from writing my story?
I was wondering if there is a category or folder for the submissions, so I can see all the contestant's webtoons? Or maybe some sort of mark on it that tells you they're participating?
Hi webtoon! I'm a new discover creator entering the contest! Do you think you could give some advice on how to build a following? I've noticed the popularity pages for the contest have remained pretty stagnant, and I think it'd be good for new creators to have a chance at the top, which seems impossible to me right now :') I know I'd be a lot more confident in my entry if Audience Engagement wasn't so much of an issue.
I honestly want to join the contest, but my age is quite young. This is my question: Is there an minimum age requirement for entering the contest? From what I saw in the video, going to a party sounds so amazing; but if the person is really young(like 14, for example), could parents come too? I can't really come up with an explanation, but can a creator be TOO young? Hope you understand some of this, and I thank you for reading ^^
If you are on the website, you will see a black publish button next to your profile. You just have to make sure you're on your computer to upload, since there's no way to upload through the app or the mobile website.
So I am 12 and I started making some art for my webtoon but I am allowed to Publish it when I am 14 years old . But i kinda want to Publish it earlier cause We don't know when Webtoon will "die".
The disadvantage of the new webtoon is that popular discover artists already has supporters to support theirs.
I agree It's totally unfair, there are other webtoon sites that hold contests that judge 100% on their own board, and 0% on audience. We are TOTALLY entered into the contest for our comic SPELLBOUND! Thanks for answering our Q's!

If u guys want to see it, here's my work:

I’m glad you’re adding a way for discover creators to make money!!
For panels, if you establish previous panels in a new episode, does that still count as a panel for the required episode length?
PencilShavings13 probably, since it applies to both chapters but I would add an exptra panel just to avoid any issues.
Yes I think that would be save. I doesn´t count the panels from the previous episode to make it sure.
fav comics... :3)

3. i love yoo
4.Lumine
5.UNordinary
To answer the questions on how old you have to be to enter,
You have to be at least 14. You can still enter the contest if you are below the age of 14 your parents have to fill out some paperwork on behalf of you. It is to allow you to be a part of the Webtoon team and allow you to travel until Sept 13. (I guess I didn't read it for a few days 😅)
I want to enter the contest but I feel like my art isn’t good enough and probably won’t get any attention:/
Itz M don't be negative, there is always people who will support you. Even if you are not good enough, just try. Because if you don't try you won't improve. (I'm sorry if my English wasn't good , I'm French😅). And also Fighting!😊
I bet your arts amazing
Your skill in drawing shouldn't bother you so much. Just think of a way in which you can create good comic with what you are able to do. At least try so you can learn and improve. Hope you will be more positive about it. :D I had same thoughts as you so I understand. Just try.
Practice makes perfect so I bet it'd be worth it for the improvement alone.
#1 I love you
#2 Small World
#3 Lumine
#4 Refund High school
#5 Sweet Home
How old do you have to be to enter? :P
My favorite Webtoons are
1)Dice
2)I love Yoo
3)Let's play
4)Rebirth
What about your favorites??
I don't know if that whole "you can upload an existing series" thing is good for this contest. People who have a series that already has an audience will win over most newcomers simply because they already have that audience of fans that newcomers do not. It makes this contest unfair for new creators, don't you think?
Edit: i'm joining either way, check out "mortal" by jason-san (that's me)
I checked out your series and it's pretty good. I dont think I've ever seen a concept like that, very new and interesting. Please keep it going
@@TheFreakyVibes Eyyy, thanks a lot for the support!
@@j-saaan np 🙂 I hate reading boring stuff so it was a pleasure really
I’m entering with a webtoon called “when you can’t draw” (cuz I can’t lol) please check it out!! Good luck to everyone else
I entered with my webcomic "Heroic Daydreams" so that I finally make the comic. Most of the time I did rewrite the story but now I thought I should start drawing as well. I wish all good luck and I can´t wait for the best 8 to see the awesome new stories.
My favorite WEBTOON is Lalin’s Curse
I cant enter, I have a story- but my skills are horrible. Another 2 years for me viciously training my art haha! However- I truly, truly hope that when I get my comic out- people will find it and enjoy it. I just want to inspire other artists of all types and bring new things to the table.
No hints yet! Except that it will be a female lead in a scifi/romance genre.
Good luck everyone on this contest. I will be reading.~
14 up to enter :) :)
You guys should check out the webtoon comic: ALIEN SQUAD. Its in the contest too and its awesome!!
I’m joining!
I'll be entering the contest under the title "Shaky Strokes" 😊
I'll be uploading it after my exams, more information will be available on my Instagram account @sibista ! Good luck to everyone✨
My fav Webtoons are.....

Hi! So excited for this contest! Could one enter more than one comic into two different genres? Thank you so much!
Peanut Butter I've checked the rules on the site and I believe you can
What's your favorite Webtoon comic? Mine is :Rebirth and Lumine~
My fav is star martial god technique
I'm entering with a webtoon called "My First Harem Anime Club?!" Also just as other people said it would be unfair if people who are new comers who doesn't have any audiences in numbers get any attention at all. There's many amazing stories being submitted weekly and they deserve the light as well just like anyone else. People who are already popular can just make another webtoon series and win cause they will have that support on their side. It should be a free for all for those to get a chance to be featured not for the number of likes or subscribers they have. Just my opinion.
What age do you have to be in order to enter??
stellar babe thanks ;3;
stellar babe thanks
14+
stellar babe does age 13 count?
Zayevv they said in the rules that you can be 13 as long as you turn 14 by September 13th
I entered the contest, but ended up having to quit due to the complications of not having a drawing tablet, i spent 10 hours working on the first chapter but sadly its really bad. I might remake it later if i ever get a tablet but that doesn't seem anywhere close in the future.
What if finalists can't make it to the NY Comic Con or wouldn't be able to travel if they're from another country?
My favorites are unordinary and god of highschool
Make more plzzzzzz cuz i want them to talk and people voice acting as them
I knew Kenny made the music.. you guys still haven’t let him go yet have you
I hope "Befriend of the Dead" wins!!
Aww man I dont got the softwere to make it much less the supllies
Eunice Yooni Kim is so CUTE~!
My comic will be a slice of life and, by default it will probably be put in the best laughs category. I was wondering if I could change the category even though it is a slice of life for something like best feels since my story won’t be funny but more heartwarming
Kid W25 ok thank you for your help!
argh im turning 14 RIGHT AFTER the contest endsssss
I'm excited
Let me test the waters then if it’s not about the fan base . Check out Arma this Friday
Man, I wanna work for Webtoon so bad!! But I'm only 13 so,.... Yeah ~.
Will they be another webtoon contests in the future?
Mellow Jellow by the looks of it every two years. But since this is getting popular every year it might become yearly.
Does it have to be complete by the deadline, because me idea of the ending doesn’t have much to go forward. I do have ideas for storylines to keep the comic going, but I’m wondering if the series needs to have a definitive ending.
The amount of episodes and panels have to match the criteria. That's all there is to it.
Yay I’m joining
Hi I just wanted to ask if parodying another series for one panel is acceptable or if that goes against contest rules? Specifically asking about a reference to a meme from a cartoon television series. I drew my character in the same pose and facial expression.
Trying to ask a potential legal/ownership related question.
If we enter the contest, or just publish on discover at all, can we later decide to move our comic somewhere else without repercussions?
My favorite Webtoon is its my problem, not yours!
You seem so nice I want to meet you ;-; should I make the comic...
By panels does it mean the squares you draw with pictures in them or something else
I SAW YEON-GI
Question: if the person won the contest but the person is in a different contry or poor to go to new york how can this person go or get her/his price?
Random Person idk maybe they will help the winner to go there or they just send the prize 😗😗???
Hope webtoon staff anwser your question😆😆😆😆and I also gonna ask that question too😅😅😅
The contract states that the NYC trip will be fully paid for by Webtoon no matter where you are in the world.
I think the only exception is if you're under 18 yrs. Then you can't go to NYC due to legal reasons.
CatCactus thank u now I know🙇🙇thanks for your informations☺☺☺
How often do Webtoon host contest tho? Is it yearly or just once in a while?
Hello!
Hi
What I don’t really get is something about the panel and chapter pages, since is says “32+ panels, 4+ chapter” does this mean these are the minimum requirements? Also does the comic have to do a minimum of 32 panels in the minimum of 4 chapters? Can it be one chapter with 32+ panels?
If one participates but dont win, since they are being graded out of a 100, will they be able to still see what score they got?
Hi im making a webtoon! But...I haven't made an episode yet because im very insecure about my art and story that im making.... what should I do to stop this insecurities that holding me back from writing my story?
I really want to enter but I'm not that good at drawing and I cant draw on computer cri
I finally found you!!!!!! 😭😭😭
I'm supporting Lalin's curse! Who's with me?
Is it a continuous story or does it have to be a short story with the panel and episode recommendations?
I was wondering if there is a category or folder for the submissions, so I can see all the contestant's webtoons? Or maybe some sort of mark on it that tells you they're participating?
Will this competition be held next year as well
To bad I suck at Art so I can’t make a comic on discover!
Yay
Are you allowed to work in a group? Or does the participant need to be one person?
Sup nerds!!
Too bad my Weston isn't coming out till 2019
How do I loge in?
Why.... why can’t I subscribe to more than 100+ webtoon? I need a explanation!!??
Can we enter more than one series of comic?
How can you even create a discover webtoon cause I want to create one?
If you are on the website, you will see a black publish button next to your profile. You just have to make sure you're on your computer to upload, since there's no way to upload through the app or the mobile website.
80,000........DOLLARS!?!?!? I can quit my jobs for 3-4years. Party in NYC?!?! I can drive 9h or fly 2h to NYC (Chinese town food!!!!!!!!!)👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
So I am 12 and I started making some art for my webtoon but I am allowed to Publish it when I am 14 years old . But i kinda want to Publish it earlier cause We don't know when Webtoon will "die".
