Thank you for the honest and rapid fire review. Best done review ever.
I had to change the automatic downloads to PC to never, else I had the same issues of regular uploads to Acurite and/or Wunderground. It would even hang and stop altogether.
Since not downloading anything anymore it is functioning flawless and also never a red status on the app or web displays or Winderground.

I am still using this weather station several years later. The software is still terrible and I don't use it at all. The wind measurement spinner has seized up. The rain gauge is also no longer accurate and reports triple the actual. I basically use it for what's left; measuring temperature, wind direction and pressure. The indoor screen sits on my desk and works as a great nightlight.

@@HomeTechDIY i’ll piggyback on the original posters comment; I bought one about two months ago and concur with your comments about cheapness of the outside device plastic. I don’t expect it to last very long however. I had gone through most of the installation so I continued. The display has changed, since your original review in that, it is Wi-Fi capable and no longer requires a PC for data pass along, however, the layout of the screen information is a bit different but still elements remain hidden which require buttons to access. The buttons are just as cheap :-)
Although you can manually calibrate temperature, the barometric pressure is of .12 inches. Even if you manually calibrate, which I haven’t tried yet, the instructions tell you that the calibration results do not transmit to Weather underground. Therefore, what is the point of the calibration?
Overall, I would tell anybody considering this unit it’s a great entry level station to get a taste for having a weather station, but it is extremely cheap and likely inaccurate in some capacities.
Oh one more thing, the attachment of the weather station to the provided plastic mount or a metal pipe won’t last.
I would rate this weather station 1.5 stars out of 5 stars

Thanks for the update and for sharing your thoughts! I am still using the station today, over 4 years since the review. I no longer have it connected to a PC because I was tired of dealing with the connectivity issues. The internal fan now makes a noticeable humming sound, the wind spinner has seized up and the unit has yellowed from the sun. The other sensors are continuing to work and the lithium batteries last about 3 years. All the best!

I discovered it would connect quickly on just battery power, and it stayed connected. When I plugged in the a/c power it would freeze up or would not connect at all. I checked the output of the a/c power adapter and it showed the output at over 8 volts. I used another power adapter that was outputting at 5 volts and so far, for 24 hours it is working and has stayed connected.

Hay There Laddie: I've had exactly this same Weather Station for about three years. It has performed flawless(ly) until, it appears, the Humidity Sensor had failed. Ever since, I have outrageous temperatures display, they are not accurate. The rest of the unit appears to still be functioning correctly, but it EATS BATTERIES. I believe this is due to the Humidity Sensor, grounding out batteries somehow. The unit still displays correct Wind Direction and Speed, Rain...I need to tear it open, and Hard Wire it (with some tiny Bell Wire), to keep from having to muck with batteries constantly. As you noted in the video, the outer, clear plastic frame WILL INDEED CRACK. The display slipped from my hand once, while haning it, banged the table under it, and CRACK!, but NOT broken. If I'm not mistaken, this unit has been DISCONTINUED by the manufacturer. Bye now, have to climb up on the roof and change batteries again.

I have found that if I use the device manager to check the USB Hub properties, I can uncheck the box that says, "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". That allows me to get data 24 hours a day, even when the computer goes into sleep mode. My power saving mode is turn off the monitors only, not the computer.

I just got one, had the newentor that I just got but it was severly anoying so exchanged it for this, this looks MUCH better! Great review, thank you! Update: I thought this worked as a stand alone unit, I was wrong. You have to buy the 85.00 outdoor censor to get this to work, REALLY frustrating and misleading why they would not specify that....

Make sure the batteries are installed correctly in the sensor. make sure the sensor is next to the display. Press and hold the reset button for 20 seconds and then wait up to 10 minutes for the sensor information to come online. You should see bars next to the sensor icon on the display and then reading should start to feed in. If that doesn't do the trick, you might need to reach out to AcuRite.

Just picked up the Wifi version. So far nothing but frustration. Probably should have done a bit more research but I'm still in the window for returns. I am totally not impressed with the device connectivity making me wonder what decade Acurite exists in. While Weatherunderground is able to see my device (though still offline) MyAcurite isn't able to connect at all after 3 days, and several resets, of trying. My only complaint about the hardware is the main screen is laughable with the colour overlay as you mention and having to scroll though the functions is a bit frustrating. I'm on the fence whether I'll return it as I'm not sure what's more of a hassle, packing it all back up or just dealing with Acurite's shortsighted and lackluster product. Had I seen this video before buying I probably wouldn't have bought it but who knows!

    • @HomeTechDIY
      @HomeTechDIY  2 роки тому +1

I hear ya! Mine is actually still connected and I use the indoor screen. The wind speed device is not working after a couple of years and it takes a lot of wind to make it spin. The PC connect lasts for a week or so and then I need to unplug the USB cable and insert it into a different port of the computer. Once I have cycled through all the ports, I need to restart the computer. For what it's worth, it's good enough but I will be trying a different brand once this thing totally dies.

Agree on all points. I've owned two 5in1 units now for 7 years. The first sensor was getting very flakey with sending data where the display said there was 0 signal (a spectrum analyzer showed data was being sent however). Eventually I purchased an old stock sensor and display and things work fine with my two displays (now) and my hub. The price is right but it is far from a perfect weather station.

I'm trying to install mine today. So how do you drive the two short screws into the mounting bracket? Seems like there should be predrilled holes. I tried with all my strength, no dice. Seems the only way is to drill some holes in vertical pipe portion of the bracket. The manual should mention this.

@@HomeTechDIY Yes. I'm mounting the sensor to the included plastic mount. This mount is made of very hard plastic, impossible to drive screws into it without predrilling first. No big deal, but the user manual really should have mentioned this.

my display fell off a low coffee table breaking the cheap clear plastic material that surrounds the display. After 2 years the outdoor humidity permanently read 99%. A couple of months later the outdoor temperature read from -21 to 131 degrees F which set new records in Florida. Very upset it is broken.
