Some features I may have forgotten to mention. The display has three brightness display settings, you just push on the light bulb icon at the top of the frame and you have bright, medium, and dim, you also can select "Auto Dim". If your power goes out, it automatically turns the display illumination off to save battery power. You can download the AcuRite weather app and you can join the weather underground if you wish. Here is the link to the software: www.acurite.com/kbase/downloads/
VERY GOOD presentation. Nice soothing voice, you don't try to be funny, you SHOW what you're talking about, and you helped me decide that I do indeed want one of these for my RV. Well shot and good explanations of the features. Also thanks for including the lightning detector.
This is a great review and a timeless one for this setup I think. I just bought the same setup minus the lightning detector and I got the smartHUB with it. I am set up with Weather Underground as well. I have a new Access hub on the way as an update. I have the 5-in-1 sensor mounted maybe a hundred feet or so from my hub and display but I lose the signal just to the display sometimes for whatever reason. I can't move the sensor anywhere else so I don't know what it is going to take to fix that. The sensor has new Lithium batteries in it too. This is the best review of this AcuRite Weather Station I have seen so far. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thank you so much I really appreciate it. I'm curious if when you did your google or youtube search, if my review of the AcuRite atlas showed up at all? Thank you for taking time to watch and comment.
Thanks for donating your talent and time. Your video demonstrated the infomation I'd hoped to find, and your experience with rechargeable (longer-lasting) batteries and previous versions of the 5-in-1 ultimately sold me. Acurite can/should thank you for the purchase that I just made on their site : ) +acurite (oh wait. UA-cam doesn't have tagging anymore ;p )
I was going to buy one of these, I now have la crosse, but I can not see the display on it unless I sit at the right angle, Can you see this on from across the room or at any angle?
You have to go into the display unit's settings. You have the option to select F or Celsius. You'll see three horizontal dashes on the Display Screen border. Click on that, then click on Units. Then select your preferred display units and you're done.
The battery condition indicator is on your monitor screen but does not appear until the battery level is at about half. once it shows you have about four to six months before all batteries are depleted. The outside sensor unit uses 4 AA batteries wired in parallel, meaning the unit uses 3 volts DC for powering the sensors and transmitter. Easy way to eliminate battery replacement is to buy the Remote Battery accessory that eliminates having to replace batteries in the outside sensor by physically changing them out in the Sensor. I did this upgrade and now my battery pack is indoors in my Master bedroom.
Here's an update... The Accessory is Model # 06052, and is available via Amazon for $54.00 or via Ebay for about $32.00. Apparently the price has went up for this little fix because the prices are all over the place and a lot more than it cost me at $22.99 back in July ,2018--Some online quotes as high as $300.00 for what is essentially a battery box with 30' of cable, connected to a terminal block that replaces the battery cover on the sensor. Perhaps ordering it direct from Accurite may get the price down to a more reasonable price. I've had mine up and running since September, and it works great!! We got 1.12" of ran in the last 21 hours here!! Another fix is to cut the battery box off the accessory, and wire in an AC Adapter, that converts 110V AC to 3 Volt DC. It needs to be 1 milliamp to avoid hurting the sensors, but it's an easy fix, doing away with battery changes altogether (but if the power goes out, I would assume there would be no sensor readings to save).
Thank you! I have been thinking about getting one of these and adding it to my raspberry pi data logger setup for my greenhouse. Great close-up and description! Love your channel!
Thank you Trixiegirl! I do love gadgets :) My Dad always had the latest tech back in the day and it was fun to see what he was up to. He would have loved UA-cam I think :)
Hi there hope you read this. I have a la crossing technology and I'm not happy with it. I'm living in Canada and snowstorms is normal here. So it did start to snow and the system showed snow 30 min later. So the accuracy is not to me. Do you know if the acurite system also collect snow? I know that it's collect rain but don't know if the system collects snow. Please tell me if you know
I have one of these of a similar model. What I hate is losing power and thus losing memory on my weather monitor. How would I back up the 5 volt power supply with batteries?
My display units have batteries in them, so that saves the data. Doesn't your unit have a battery compartment? When the power goes out, they automatically go dim to save power and the batteries keep the data from resetting.
Not sure which model you have as most Accurite 5-in-1 sensors use 4 ~1.5 volt AA batteries for their power. That does not mean they use 6 volts however since the batteries are wired in pairs of two, meaning it uses 3 volts for the sensors. The monitor should not lose readings when the power goes out as there are batteries in each unit. The AC adapter provided with the Monitor only provides power for the display. The three AA's in the monitor only provide voltage to the transmitter for connection to the outside Sensor. One could use an uninterruptible power supply of 5 volts DC output if necessary. I've had my Accurite Weather Station for three years, and even though I have lost House Power in severe storms, I've yet to lose data due to a power outage.
Mr Dunn, have you seen the AcuRite channel videos? Yours is exponentially better, they should PAY YOU for this! Excellent as always! I need this for Christmas!
Great video good detail I learned some things from you. I have the same one except it’s not the professional model. I am having trouble with outside temperature reading and wind speed. Both units are set at C any suggestions?
One method for sure is to unplug the display unit and remove the batteries, then put them all back and it should be back to the default screen and you'll have to reset the date/time etc...
My unit measures the daily rain totals, but will not keep track of the weekly, monthly and yearly totals. It's got to be a faulty display unit, but AcuRites warranty assumes you are going to start using the unit the day you buy it. Not so, it took me a few months till I got it up on the pole, meanwhile, the warranty is running. Well AcuRite will say too bad, your warranty has run out when out find out it doesn't work!
Hey! great review. I'm about to buy one of those, for work related monitoring, but I have a doubt, perhaps someone here could help me. If I Have the unit installed a few kilometers of my work, can the unit still send me the data? and if so, can I download the data to my computer?
The AcuRite Atlas which I purchased this year has a link that feeds a computer database if you need that. Check their website as there may be another data collection and website feed that you can access. Since I don't personally use that, I'd visit their primary website for details. I haven't found them to be very responsive to questions though.
Nice video, very informative. Thank you for taking the time. Question: How does these unites hold up in freezing weather? Any concern about the rain gauge catching water, then freezing and breaking a plastic part?
I live in a severe winter weather region. There has been now snow or ice damage to date. the components are angled so ice does not damage the rain gauge.
Great timing - an AcuRite (but I have not research which one) is on my Xmas list as my one old was made in 1988 and stopped measuring wind 10 years ago and my rainfall collector is a couple of tin cans ( and she is getting a car - so I can ask for anything). The only reason I know to not use RB's in modern is how they interact with "low battery" warnings ( RB's voltage/charge curve is different than ALK's ). In the old days (10 years ago) it was thought that RB's could leak and damage electronics - started by Alk manufacture's. Does Santa take Amazon Wish Lists? Yesterday my new close up Wifi camera came and I will be installing inside a late Oct swarm (the size of a baseball) hive as son as weather permits.
Hi Daniel, you're right, the rechargeable batteries will initially show as a "low-battery" in lots of electronic devices, but they last a very long time in them. I've never had one leak? I'm not telling others to use them, just sharing what I do :) AcuRite is always coming out with new gear and new display units etc... If you have one from 1988, you're going to be very happy with the new offerings :)
While plugging amazon and their products, why not do a sponsored video? A link to the product would pay for the time you spent making this video. I dont know how many views you get per video, but it couldnt hurt. Just Saying
That's a great idea, but as of this week, Amazon and Google are having a tech-war and Google/UA-cam will be lowering exposure in searches involving videos with Amazon tags and links... so, it "could" hurt your video exposure throughout the search engine results. If they get along again some day, that would be a great idea :)
