Eric Stewart, the writer and singer of this song explained this about the song.................
"At that time my wife and I had been married about eight years," Eric Stewart recalls, "and she asked me 'Why don't you say "I love you" more often?' I had this crazy idea in my mind that repeating those words would somehow degrade the meaning, so I told her 'Well, if I say every day "I love you, darling, I love you, blah, blah, blah," it's not gonna mean anything eventually.' That statement led me to try to figure out another way of saying it, and the result was that I chose to say 'I'm not in love with you,' while subtly giving all the reasons throughout the song why I could never let go of this relationship.
Eric and his wife Gloria are still married after more than 50 years( but I don't think it'll last, "It's just a silly phase he's going through.")
P.S. The girl who whispers " Big Boys Don't Cry." was their secretary in the recording studio and they realised that her voice was perfect for those spoken words.

10cc are a great English rock band from the 70's. This group was super talented as every member was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer & producer. "I'm Not In Love" was their biggest hit in 1975 but they had other songs such as "The Things We Do For Love", "Rubber Bullets", "Dreadlock Holiday", "The Dean & I", "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Silly Love", "Life Is A Minestrone", "Art For Art's Sake", "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" etc.

    God Bless!

The band members spent a couple of weeks in the studio singing different chords in harmony, which were then used to provide the layered vocals you hear in the background. No, that wasn't synthesizer, it was human voices harmonizing. And it was all recorded, engineered and mastered on analog tape, before the digital age. Amazing production.

The background "music" in this song is not strings, horns, or woodwinds, it is each band member singing "ahhh" too every note in the song, then multiplied dozens of times to achieve over 600 vocals that sound like background music.

True. If you are familiar with the "mellotron" and how it works, then you could imagine the tapes in such a "keyboard" benig replaced by those voice recordings. But that's not how they did it. They used their freaking big mixing console and overdubbing to build this effect. That must have been tedious, laborious, work and only determination and artistic vision could have gotten them to the end-result.

576 voices. Three singers x 12 notes x 16 tracks. Looped, yes, like a Mellotron. Such imagination!

No Mellotron, No Vako Optigon, 4 years before the release of the Fairlight CMI and digital sampling technology. Just raw talent, incredible production, imaginative use of multitrack tape recorders and a great song that stands the test of time as it approaches half a century since I first heard it.

I remember this song so very well from my sophomore year in high school. And yes, it does bring back memories. They achieved the background voices by recording multiple layers of voices on top of each other. Enya did this frequently later on with many of her songs. When they needed a female voice to say, “Big boys don’t cry,” they got an admin in the office of the studio by the name of Cathy to record that part. Yes, he puts her picture over a stain in the wall when he knows he could very well put a picture of a giraffe or a moose there.😁

They went to a lot of trouble to make it look live but in reality they are singing along with the original recorded version (albeit edited). It would have been difficult to reproduce live back in the day as there were 48 voices and tape loops involved to achieve the aah effect, also Katy Redfern did the original big boys don't cry whispers.. But I love 10cc especially 'I'm Mandy Fly Me', 'Art for Art's Sake' and 'Don't Hang up'. Glad you girls loved it..

It truly is a love song. Straight up 100%, no strings attached except for sarcasm. He's not denying his love for her nor is he trying to deny it. He's simply being sarcastically funny in professing how deep his love is for her, because his girl knows and loves his sarcastic wit. 🙂

10cc recorded themselves individually singing 'Ahh' for every note they needed, and bounced the tracks many times to build up that incredible sound. It was controlled by pushing up the faders, making the mixer into an instrument itself. Great short documentary on how they did it.
I love 10cc - they actually had their own recording studio, and the production was immaculate. Too bad the two really funny and experimental guys left. They went on to produce several very interesting albums, and were very active making videos for other groups to be shown on MTV. (Duran Duran, Herbie Hancock, and even George Harrison.) The other two took the direction of a more commercial pop sound, and worked with Paul McCartney. Amazing talent all around. Very nice to see your smiles at this unforgetable song.

Fantastic beautiful song!!!! Relaxing and takes you to a different world. By the way Gap ladies, that breezy sound you hear in the background that sounds like a keyboard synthesizer, that's actually multiple human voices that all the guys in the band recorded on different tracks and then stacked on top of each other many times. And then the engineer raised and lowered the volume on different tracks to create that beautiful sound. Pretty cool stuff for that time period. Oh, and the whispering "big boys don't cry" part is actually a woman that worked at the recording studio (I think she was the studio receptionist). They asked her to come into the studio and sing that part.

This song was groundbreaking in the way it was recorded. If you want something 10cc that's different, try Dreadlock Holiday. Also, you may want to look at a video called the making of I'm not in Love. You'll find out what the background sound is, it will surprise you. This song came about because the writers wife asked, "Why don't you say say you love me?". He wrote this song instead.

10cc are Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley & Lol Cream. The multi layed choir was achieved by the band members recording themselves over & over. When the band split Godley & Cream did a few albums on their own & went into video production. Graham Gouldman joined Andrew Gold to form the short lived band Wax who had a minor UK hit with a song you could try Bridge To My Heart. The song is all about someone so in love.

My interpretation of the lyrics always reminded me of a story from my past: I met a girl in my last year of University and, for me at least, it was love at first sight. We became inseparable from that very first day, but only ever as friends. I was always too scared to tell her how I felt. And the pain got so much that I had to convince myself that I didn't love her to stop from going insane. It took a pretty long process to do that, and, of course, the second I convince myself truly that "I'm Not in Love", she tells me she's crazy about me. But I've done that good a job falling out of love, I can't even bear to hear it, cos, by that time, my heart was completely closed off and I felt nothing but the pangs of regret that I didn't hold off a little bit longer and maybe we could have been together.

Kudos to you both! I remember when this song came out, a bit young to know Love well then, but in a few years "the denial" and the ethereal vocals were hard to forget. With the "Be Quiet, big boys don't cry" in my head, to control my emotions whenever possible.... for a long time. The irony and denial is not to be forgotten.
ANYWAY, here's the point to this comment: for whatever reason, I happened upon this song again tonight and happened to watch several "reaction" videos for this. You two seemed to be the ONLY ones that got the true meaning.. the "thou doest protest too much" adage, that the more you deny something, the more likely it is true. The others took it at face value that this person was trying to let someone down that they weren't in Love with them.
Well done Ladies! Keep it up!!

Ground breaking track! By the way, the whispered vocals of "Be quiet, big boys don't cry" came from the secretary of Strawberry Studios (the studio the band operated), Kathy Redfern. They were looking for a certain sound when Redfern entered the studio to quietly tell Eric Stewart he had a phone call. When they heard her voice, they knew it was right for the song.
Other songs worth a reaction by them include
'Art for Art's sake' 'The Wall Street Shuffle' 'The Dean and I' 'I'm Mandy Fly Me' 'Donna' and a whole lot more too, well worth delving deeper ladies.

Eric Stewart wrote I'm Not in Love in response to his wife telling him that he didn't say "I love you" often enough.
When they were recording this song, Kevin Godley thought it needed something extra to put it over the top. He came up with the line, "Big boys don't cry," which the band members liked, but they needed to find the right voice to speak it. Just then, secretary Kathy Redfern opened the door to the control room and whispered, "Eric, sorry to bother you. There's a telephone call for you." Lol Creme said, "That's it! That's the voice!" Redfern was reluctant to do it, but they talked her into it. The line later became the inspiration for the band name Boys Don't Cry.

10cc were innovators. that haunting background sound you hear throughout the song are their voices just singing "ahhhh" over and over again in different keys recorded multiple times and overdubbed. There is an actual tv documentary on them and this is covered in it. They had their own studio.
The 70's were as prolific as the 60's were with new bands and sounds some bands even made up from remnants of older 60's bands. I haven't seen you react to one such band yet. Electric Light Orchestra. lovingly referred to as ELO is one such band. Multiple great songs. "Telephone Line" "All Around The World" "Evil woman" and "Mr. Blue Sky" are just 4.

I remember buying "The Original Soundtrack" LP when it was released in March 1975 after previously buying "Sheet Music" in 1974. As I listened to the first side of "The Original Soundtrack" and "I'm Not In Love" started I simply knew it would be a hit.
The album is still in my collection today and it is still worth playing over and over again.
The multiple voices at the beginning were actually the band's recorded tape loops played and organised in many channels on the mixing desk. That was a very creative offering from the band members and took hours to set up.
Magic music that has stood the test of time.

When this song played on the radio a lot, it was at a time when I was making big changes in my life (for the better). New job, moved out of my parent's house, moved to another part of the state, greatly expanded my life. This song (and a couple of others) brings me back to that time.

All great song writers. Graham Goldman wrote, "No milk today"
He may have wrote "Bus stop" too
Godly and Creme left the group. "cry" was a big hit for them

it is a beautiful love song written by Eric Stewart because the lead singers wife told him it was his best song yet and that he never says he loves her enough, after he was told that he promised to say 'I love you' every day for the last 48 years

Released in May, 1975, this sure did bring back a flood of memories, very late in my HS Junior year, Senior year up before I realize, song was played constantly on top 40 radio formats, which were most all them, all Summer long and on into the next school year in Sept., it was part of my Senior year in school, the summer before it an integral part of my senior year, it was going to be my last summer while in secondary school, college will not be the same, I've now grown beyond that after Sept. arrives, and a personnel era has gone, never to get it back. 😔

10cc is a band who I have been listening to more recently since they offer so much variety in their music. I have always loved this song and learned the band wanted to make this song using ONLY VOCALS. They originally wanted to use a large choir but just weren't able to get that done. This multi-layered track is beautiful. Thanks for the reaction ladies and I am sad I haven't seen you having a livestream lately. I humbly request you react to Angelina Jordan's genius arrangement of "Bohemian Rhapsody" ua-cam.com/video/qF0JV28vgLw/v-deo.html

This song absolutely stops me in my tracks just as much today as it did in 1975. It sounds just as good today and will in another half century. There's no band around now that could come within a million miles making a song this good. 10cc what a band.

"big boys don't cry" is sung by the record company's receptionist! They suddenly wanted a female singer for that line. This is so junior high school angst. Lots of us guys are stuck there.

This is a battle between love and the fear of rejection. He's on the edge of tears, whispering "big boys don't cry",
Desperately trying to avoid looking pathetic by denying that anything he is doing means that he is vulnerable.

A Lover in Denial is Exactly what this song is about, and his minds process of trying to explain the many reasons why he does love her, he is so lying to himself as we all do when love comes to us under different circumstances and that's the only things this song doesn't clue us into, why is he trying to convince himself of this?. I remember laying in my bed as a teenager and hearing this song come on the radio in my teens in the '70s and being completely memorized and overwhelmed by its beautiful hypnotics sounds.

He wrote this song (tongue in cheek) because his wife kept telling him, you never tell me you love me (and of course he always traveled afar) thus he wrote this song. They have been together about 55 years now. Bravo

The synth sound is actually voice over dubs that equal 64 thousand voices of the 'ahhhs' that gives it the spacey sound effect ... They were a band on their own terms .They made different styles and had a nice good long moment of success... I'm Mandy, Fly Me" The Things We Do For Love are good ones fora reaction ..You should listen to ''The Original Soundtrack '' ''Dare You!'' ' Deceptive Bends'' albums if you want to have a totally different vibe of music .They are that good..

Such a unique and innovative arrangement this song is! I am a child of the '70s and remember this song and their other hits very well. This puts to shame the autotune and oversampled trash being passed off today as music. The 1970s were the true golden age of popular music. Nothing will ever top it...

A beautiful love song of a man who basically is in denial. He’s giving all the reasons why he’s not in love, When he clearly is - Eric Stewart said this about the song - Eric is the singer here ( the good looking one 😉)
