This song was such a monster smash back in the day, that the BBC did a documentary on it entitled " The Making Of I'm Not In Love, By 10cc"! You need to pull that up, then you'll really appreciate the love that was poured into this song!

Good documentary
It's like a song heard in a half dream. 'Asleep in a stream of sunlight' is from another phase from this wonderful group.
10cc was tired of love songs, so they made a "I'm Not In Love" love song. Brilliant lyrically, and brilliant developing that cascading looped vocal backdrop using hundreds of spliced together tape loops.
Not really, Erics wife kept telling him, you never tell men you love me and you are always on the road. Eric kept telling her, its what in your heart that matters, not what you say. So he decided to write a song that conveyed the EXACT OPPOSITE message, a guy over and over says "I'm not in Love: when his actions tells everyone he is MADLY IN LOVE, 🤣I guess Eric was right, he's been married to the same woman now for over 50 yeas.
Really groundbreaking the way they used that old equipment to produce such a wonderful sound that makes you feel like you're floating. I never get tired of hearing this!

Always something to hear, not just one to two things. It's also about love and how everyone needs to be loved.

I was in high school when this song came out and remember listening to this with headphones. It felt like being in a trance. There is a great documentary on UA-cam about how they made this, using then what was groundbreaking (overdubbing their voices and physically splicing the tape) techniques. I bought all their albums and saw them live, too. BTW, Kevin Godley is the one who looks like Cat Stevens!

The meaning goes even deeper than that - it's about the way men are brought up to think that expressing their emotions openly is a sign of weakness ("be quiet - big boys don't cry") so it follows that to admit feelings of love shows weakness, so denying them shows strength.

Well it looked like Cat Stevens to ME and thats all that matters. It's Kevin Godley - his look there is similar to a young Yusef (Cat Stevens)

keeping in mind that most of their songs are love songs, so the irony is funny. but their love songs seem to be platonic or speak on the idea of loving, or being loved rather then it being directed at anyone in particular. at least that is how i see it, i must crazy, i dunno.
