He won three consecutive years. There have been a few that have also achieved this as well. That isn't to take away from Mike, who is an absolute MONSTER!
The thing most people seem to miss about this, the DJ is only using 1 single record. He is not mixing between 2 or having a back track. So every single sound from the beat comes from a single record isolated on his mixer, synced perfectly with the lyrics.
The man at the turntable is mixmaster Mike. He is a god amongst DJs. He would go to contest and mop the floor so hard that they had to force him to stop competing in contests and eventually made him a judge the man’s legendary and one day he decided to call up the Beastie Boys and see what they were up to and you can hear that call on the album Hello Nasty.
Go down the beastie boys rabbit hole, it’s brilliant. They don’t miss. The entire license to ill album brought hip hop to the mainstream. “New Style” is incredible fast forward a few years to collaboration with Q Tip “ Get it together”. Enjoy the journey.
Beastie boys wasn't the beginning of hip hop but they definitely helped hip hop be what it is today. They were doing shit no one was doing. This is hip hop royalty my friend.
That was Broadcast Live from the MTV awards show . They literally announced the Beastie Boys then cut to the street Where Mic Master Mike was walking to the Building where the BB’s Basement studio was located for many many years in Brooklyn . They performed this Live in One Take for the MTV Music Awards . I watched this Live that night and over a hundred times since . I e been to several Beastie boys concerts in 80’s & 90’s . Their first album came out my Senior Year 🔥. The rest is History ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ please listen to their first two albums in their entirety . Licensed to I’ll and Paul’ s Boutique . Preferably in that order . Do Paul’s Boutique first please. 🙏 and Thanks⭐️
Same. I remember watching them play Sabotage on Letterman and loving it. Paul’s Boutique was so ahead of its time. You couldn’t financially make that album today with the amount of samples on it.
This is filmed in NYC, but the line, "I rock from Manhattan to the Miracle Mile." means he rocks the whole country. The Miracle Mile is a neighborhood in Los Angeles. IIRC, the La Brea Tar Pits and Cantor's Deli are in the Miracle Mile.
This song was originally released on Hello Nasty in 1999. But the Beasties did a lot to represent the roots of hip hop throughout their careers. As this was the model for original Hip Hop. Sure Shot!!!!
It’s hard to think of more iconic Gen X figures than the Beasties. They were instrumental in creating a lot of our generation’s culture (especially in the 90’s). Trend setters in so many ways.
Yeah, as a millennial it was before my time. We thought of it as dated Boomer shit - either old hippies with beads and crystals or sweaty Leisure Suit Larry types. Of course, now Zoomers and Alphas are talking about Mercury being in retrograde.
@@garryiglesias4074I wish we were still kids. yay Boogie!! You have NO IDEA how much I love the Beastie Boys! Been listening to them since they came out when I was in middle/ high school (yea I'm old haha) Could I suggest you do "Paul Revere" next? It's a story telling Rap. That's my personal favorite. There's no official video, but they do have it on their youtube. :)
Mix Master Mike is one of the best DJs of all time. And I think he's still working. You gotta appreciate the skill it takes to basically supply the whole "band" (drums, bass, etc.) for this track using nothing but a turntable & pure talent.
I saw the BBs live 2 times, 1 with Madonna's Like a Virgin tour, and 2nd was standing room only on the basketball court at UT (or flip it or reverse it)! BEST FREAKING PERFORMANCES EVER! History is exactly what they made! Enjoy the ride!
Now you see the link between the ghostbusters and the beastie boys and the video of Ren what you want which will become even more apparent with watching Intergalactic
You could check out Mix Master Mike - He was a DJ legend and won the title in '92 and '93 and was basically asked to retire because he was too good - He worked with the Beastie Boys quite a bit.
This song came out in 1998. So well into the BB's career. But the vibe is definitely a throwback to the earlier NYC hiphop scene they came up in. The thing I admire about the BBs is that they never fronted and were always true to their white-boy punk Brooklyn skater kind of style, yet their hip hop was legit. And they were legit, 100% NYC native born-and-bred. Brooklyn/NYC in the 80s/90s wasn't the posh hipster paradise it is today. And when the BBs started hip hop was still an underground scene, often playing in the same venues that the Punk bands came up in. BBs were for real. No one has ever tried to imitate them that I am aware of. They just created their own sound, went their own path, yet as they evolved, they stayed rooted in the same hip hop that Run DMC, PE, LL, BDP, etc. came up in.
I love these Beastie Boys reactions, they were innovators ahead of their time, they were some of the best samplers of all time. Anything off of the album Paul’s boutique is legendary, start with Shake, your rump, or Car Or High Plains drifter
Wow, watching Mix Master Mike work the turntables I finally understand where so much modern music came from. The music he makes with just that short sample of a record is remarkable.
Yo son callin' out ya zodiac sign been a thing in rap since late 70s0early 80s. this is 1000% pure unadulterated hi-hop by 4 absolutely legendary masters of rap WORD UP!! #RIPMC
I’m 45 and know the zodiac signs just for women. It’s all stupid af but I’m a triple Scorpio and they loved that. So I played along. It’s been going on forever man.
MixMaster Mike won the world DJ championship so many times that they asked him to stop entering so somebody else could have a chance.
He won three consecutive years. There have been a few that have also achieved this as well. That isn't to take away from Mike, who is an absolute MONSTER!
I love this FACT.
White Lives Matter too. 😂
The Chuck Norris of spinnin'.
no cap. he is up there with qbert
As a 46 year old Beasties fan, it’s awesome to see a young dude with little to no Beasties knowledge get excited about the Boys!
They were the first rappers to have #1 album in USA in 1986 with Licence To Ill
I can still sing that entire album word for word front to back hahah
Checkout Rapture by Blondie -
Much props, I had to research that because I thought it was Run-DMC's "Raising Hell" (got to #3 in 1986)
I still got that in vinyl.
If they had a dif colour skin they would be the best ever...
3 rappers, 1 DJ, live, one take, no auto tune, no semi-naked women, no guns, no drugs. How rap-hip hop should be.
and only 92 bottles of baby oil.

turned my turntable into a wahwahpedal
Ain't nobody cooler than the Beastie Boys. This is real hip hop. That's dope you dig it.🔥
Yeah he's literally dressed as a ghostbuster. Same as the movies.
RIP MCA
One take, done live, one record to scratch for the beat. Pure hip hop and skills.
It's a proton pack. Dudes a Straight up Ghost Buster.
Technically he said "Each of us is wearing an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back." LOL

Also, anyone from the 80's would recognize the backpack/outfit as an homage to Ghostbusters.
Don't forget agliolio
Don’t sleep on later work like Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty… Their instrumentation on those is stellar.

They had been performing since they were Teenagers.

Big ups Libras!!! Saw the Beastie Boys with Murphy's Law and Fishbone, in STL '87.
This is the first thing I looked for after the sub. As good today as it was then. Enjoy for life.
This came out when the Beastie Boys had already been famous for 20 years. They were established, hungry, innovative, and unique beyond compare.
The Beastie Boys became famous in 1986. This song came out in 1998 on Hello Nasty. That's 12 years, not 20.
The zodiac ish been around forever dawg! It was cliche of EARLY hip hop records (1979-82ish), Beasties doing loving tribute to it here

This really shows the roots of what the original street rap was like. Producer Rick Rubin caught this when most everybody was doing R&B production.
