Mix Master Mike is creating the beat by scratching on one vinyl record. No second record playing a loop, no drum machine, no computer. He's rapidly back-spinning on kick and snare parts, then jumping to separate synth and horn parts. On one record. Because he's a Master.
It make the performance more alive like it’s an actual band with all there instruments in sinc played by different people wish they did this on stages more just for performance mate as standing with a mic repeating the rap song
Mix master mike was, and maybe still is using a wah pedal for guitars wired into the turntables. Which gave him the ability to do tweak scratches...part of the reason his shit is so wild. He makes reference to it on a voice message on the beginning of the album version of this song.

Much of what the Beasties do is an homage to the very early days of NY Hip Hop. So in the early days the DJ was the star, the MCs (they were not even yet Emcees) were just the garnish. This is a shout out to that. They are stationary in the studio like all the other instruments until the DJ comes in, when he starts they animate and when he is finished they go back to being stationary like every other instrument, the DJ is done using them.
That makes sense. Like Run DMC and Fresh Prince making songs about their DJs mad skills. How many record players do you think they've torn up through the years lol. I can't believe they said it started early to mid 70s at house parties. Revolutionary artists back then probably couldn't have envisioned How big hip hop would get!
Hip Hop originated in the Bronx, New York. Kool Herc is the godfather of scratching records over beats and rhyming. Afrika Bambatta and Grandmaster Flash were also in that early group. This takes me back to my childhood in Brooklyn. DJ's used to battle outside and rhyme over break beats. Jazzy Jeff is indeed one of the greatest DJ's ever but if you talk to him, he was inspired by many, many New York DJ's that came before him. The Beastie Boys were one of the pioneers of hip hop. This music came from the streets and pure talent. MC's and a DJ. Period. Best rhymes win. None of that auto-tuned mess on the radio right now.

on the album version of this song(Album: Hello Nasty) it opens with a message Mix Master Mike left them on their answering machine where he hooked a wah-wah pedal to his decks and its fucking sick.
This "live" version is so much better than the studio recording. They really are great performers. On the video DVD collection, they have a dedicated camera for each of the B-Boys, it's pretty cool. You can see that it's legit a single take.
"my childhood would've been just a little bit more fun..." man, I felt for you when you said that. it definitely would have! I think I'm maybe 5 years younger than these guys. so many good times with them in the background.
Great video! Instead of lip synching to the studio version of this song, they decided to just do a live performance for the music video. Mix Master Mike was bringing it too.
My brother, he scratches that entire track from one record. There is no track, he creates it and never loops to a second track or uses a second record. He scratches the whole thing in one take, from one record, on one table. He is the instrument. This man is a master. There is a list that can, but he could back when VERY few could. Jazzy Jeff was among them as well. Hip Hop Royalty.
Actually, Mix Master Mike and DJ Z Trip thank Jazzy J as their pioneer into scratching. Jazzy Jeff started out on Soul Sonic Force, so the guys around that era more likely. The man's record collection is something like 500,000 strong.
I hope you get to do their final video(s) for Make Some Noise (the 5 minute version) and the full version of it Fight For Your Right Revisited (the 30minute version) its full of celebrity cameos with Seth Rogan, Danny McBride, and Elijah Wood playing the primary version of the B-Boys and is friggin hilarious!!!
Greatness!! Back when it was real rap/hip hop. Rea talent. Old school was amazing. Glad I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. So much great music. Rap today can’t hold a candle to the old school. Keep up the great work sir
Grammy Award winner Mix Master Mike's many accomplishments include a 3 time consecutive win of the DMC World title, a win of the 1992 New Music Seminar DJ Battle (where he became the first West Coast DJ to win the title of World Champion), and being inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 with the Beastie Boys.
My hubby was in San Antone for AF basic and I was in Orlando (Navy), I went home recorded some mastermixes from the radio that weekend, went to dig in the crates (I used to DJ on the weekends on bases with a DJ from Queensbridge that was getting stationed in San Diego with me), stopped by to see him graduate, blessed him with some sounds from home inc. License to Ill cassette and kept it moving to Diego, he went to Travis AFB. He was so happy. People don't realize how much music was exchanged in the military. Dudes that were straight country got to hear Slave and all kinds of music in the dorms, just like brothers that only knew R&B/Hip Hop were exposed to AC/DC and Metallica.
I would recommend "Professor Booty" MCA's part at the end is him dissing 3rd Bass. It was a response to the song "Sons Of 3rd Bass" in which they slammed the Beastie Boys. MCA had the last laugh...
Havin' such a good time watching you discover the beastie boys. When CD's first came out, the first disc I bought was license to ill. Iconic. And the first time I got a good system a played intergalactic every time I got in the truck.🤣
Watch Chuck D and LL induction of the Beastie Boys in the rock and roll hall of fame. They gave LL his big break by passing on his mixtape. Love your breakdowns 🙌
I was never a hip-hop head, took me forever to see the genius of the Beasties. I now thank them for making a whole culture of music that I wouldn't have otherwise been exposed to.
You mentioned DJ Jazzy Jeff and scratching. I'm in my late 50's and I can remember Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five using scratching or scrubbing as some people called it back in the late 70's. Herbie Hancock used a DJ to do some scratching on "Rockit" in 1983. I believe he won a grammy for the single and video of the year at the MTV awards.
Mix Master Mike's whole story of how he became the world champ dj and Beastie Boys's dj is awesome. Fun fact: He legit believes he can communicate with e.t's with scratching.
its great that alot of people are finally finding them! they are the real deal, i only have seen them once in Australia which was amazing with believe it or not ...they were doing benefit for the tibet! and they had hip hop with monks...the most amazing thing i have ever seen.
The things that are missing in hip hop for me are real DJs doing their thing and having fun. DJs that can actually rock a table always make music better.
Discovered it by accident too. He was practicing in his bedroom and his mother was banging on the door. His hand was moving the record as he called back to her and he heard this weird sound in his headphones. The rest is history.
You are correct. But in this video he wasn't referring to pure 'scratching'...he was referring to DJ Jazzy Jeff being the DJ that developed 'transforming' (a style of scratching).
Beasties Boys are fabulous! I've been a fan of theirs since I was a teenager in the 80's. License To Ill was an eye opener compared the classic rock my dad listened to. All I can say is that it's better late than never for your Beastie enlightenment.

Beastie Boys formed in 1978 and were pioneers in Hip Hop in every way possible. The genre was defined by them and a few others.
You got that joke before any other reactors. I loved your reactions to this.
The way you walked out cracked me up 😂
I watched that man live, scratching the national anthem…..possibly the greatest
Great video! Instead of lip synching to the studio version of this song, they decided to just do a live performance for the music video. Mix Master Mike was bringing it too.
The first ever record released commercially with Dj ‘scratching’ was called Bufflao Gals by
Malcom McLaren in the early 1980s.
I knew you were in for a treat with this one. Wish you could have seen them live when they were together. BEST live shows.
I hope you get to do their final video(s) for Make Some Noise (the 5 minute version) and the full version of it Fight For Your Right Revisited (the 30minute version) its full of celebrity cameos with Seth Rogan, Danny McBride, and Elijah Wood playing the primary version of the B-Boys and is friggin hilarious!!!
fact
yeah man when the full beasties journey is over you gotta end it with Fight For Your Right Revisited, the full half hour version
Seth Rogan is trash
Love that video. The pissing contest is so cringe yet so hilarious.
If you listen through Beastie Boys "ILL COMMUNICATION" from start to finish - you get hip hop, jam, funk...IMHO their best CD
Greatness!! Back when it was real rap/hip hop. Rea talent. Old school was amazing. Glad I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. So much great music. Rap today can’t hold a candle to the old school. Keep up the great work sir
These guys were so good live 3 mcs all entertaining as hell get a crowd crazy...
They started as a punk band. Did License to Ill for fun. And it blew up.
I grew up in Texas when these guys were "illin" sorry you missed out bro. Guess better late than never.🤣👊🏼
My hubby was in San Antone for AF basic and I was in Orlando (Navy), I went home recorded some mastermixes from the radio that weekend, went to dig in the crates (I used to DJ on the weekends on bases with a DJ from Queensbridge that was getting stationed in San Diego with me), stopped by to see him graduate, blessed him with some sounds from home inc.
@@aligaines8476 I was in elementary school way down south Texas. I think I first saw them on American band stand. Shook my world...
I was born in the 70s so the Beastie Boys were the jam when I was coming up. I love to see that you are enjoying and appreciating their music...
I would recommend "Professor Booty" MCA's part at the end is him dissing 3rd Bass. It was a response to the song "Sons Of 3rd Bass" in which they slammed the Beastie Boys. MCA had the last laugh...
That song is fire bro!🔥 Some of MCA’s best bars are in that diss.
That song is the cut.
The took Talib Kwali on tour. They really helped anyone they could with talent.
I was never a hip-hop head, took me forever to see the genius of the Beasties. I now thank them for making a whole culture of music that I wouldn't have otherwise been exposed to.
The whole fuckin beat is a cut... kick, snare, he's cutting the whole damn beat yo.
You mentioned DJ Jazzy Jeff and scratching. I'm in my late 50's
and I can remember Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five using scratching or
scrubbing as some people called it back in the late 70's. Herbie Hancock used a DJ
to do some scratching on "Rockit" in 1983. I believe he won a grammy for the single
and video of the year at the MTV awards.
Mix Master Mike's whole story of how he became the world champ dj and Beastie Boys's dj is awesome. Fun fact: He legit believes he can communicate with e.t's with scratching.
Yeap!! pure hip hop!!!! Love the video! I remember when it just came out. Also there first album “license to ill” from 1986 is idope as helllllll
”Lets make a music video, we have five minutes, two hand cameras, three MCs and one DJ”.
underestimated brilliance
Any reaction to any Beastie Boys is a instant thumbs up!
KILLER REACTION!!!
its great that alot of people are finally finding them! they are the real deal, i only have seen them once in Australia which was amazing with believe it or not ...they were doing benefit for the tibet! and they had hip hop with monks...the most amazing thing i have ever seen.
The things that are missing in hip hop for me are real DJs doing their thing and having fun. DJs that can actually rock a table always make music better.
I love the humor on top of mad skills.
I belive Grand Wizzard Theodore was the one of, if not, the first DJ to scratch.
Discovered it by accident too. He was practicing in his bedroom and his mother was banging on the door. His hand was moving the record as he called back to her and he heard this weird sound in his headphones. The rest is history.
Correct!
You are correct. But in this video he wasn't referring to pure 'scratching'...he was referring to DJ Jazzy Jeff being the DJ that developed 'transforming' (a style of scratching).
@@fidel2xl Eyyy, someone actually understood what he said
I grew up on Bboys , love how much fun & funky they are , v/cool
Mix Master Mike (dj) world famius !
I remember seeing Mix Master Mike live in San Diego, this guy is 🔥.
Beasties Boys are fabulous! I've been a fan of theirs since I was a teenager in the 80's. License To Ill was an eye opener compared the classic rock my dad listened to. All I can say is that it's better late than never for your Beastie enlightenment.
Oh man, that reaction brought so much joy to my heart. As I sit here high as a kite. I would say you can't buy that kind of joy but you can, I did. Money well spent.
