When hip hop started getting its bearings in the late 70’s-early ‘80s, they realized that a lot of what they were doing fit really well with hip hop, and they pivoted to a mixture of punk and hip hop. For those arguing about wether the B Boys were in at the start of Hip Hop - Old School Hip Hop was around a few years before the B Boys. Rappers Delight hit the radio in '79, 5 years before the B Boys signed to Def Jam.
BUT the B Boys were in on the ground floor of New School and played a massive (if not the biggest) part in sending hip hop mainstream.
The B Boys also gave LLCool J his first break by getting him signed to Def Jam.
Their impact on todays Hip Hop scene is vastly understated.

this really makes me realize what we had as kids. in the 90's there were about 1000 bands and 1000 singers and 1000 hip hop artists in the mix, and all of them were great, and we just kinda took all them in because they were there. when you isolate some of the biggest ones like Beastie Boys and show them to enthusiastic newcomers, you really get a sense of how good we had it. I don't even remember the first time I heard them, I'm sure I was like 8-12 years old, but now I really wish I could go back and hear them for the first time again.

this is a beautiful and accurate understating of just how important Beastie Boys were to hip hop. being the 1st rap album to top the billboard 200 charts in 1987 opened the genre up to WAY more ears than had ever been on it before. the fact that they were well respected by the community even though they were white in an at the time black genre of music brought the genre to white suburban youths all over the country, making it ok to stop segregating music by race which was a big thing in older generations. what they did for music and culture let alone for hip hop can never be praised enough!

One of my most cherished moments was when I was in the front row at their concert for this album’s tour. As MCA was starting this verse I got his attention by luck while I was rapping the lyrics back at ‘em, and we got to rap this “hot sauce” line together while were looking at each other. He rapped at me until the end of the verse, almost as if to see if I knew the whole thing. At the end of the verse he smiled and did a hand gesture at me and moved on. As a huge fan, nothing could have been cooler.
Probably helped I was wearing my black “BROOKLYN” hat I picked up in New York earlier that year.
