  • Today we revisit one of our WHAT IF scenarios (re-edited) where we look at what would have happened if Boromir had managed to take the One Ring from Frodo when he confronts him by Amon Hen! Where does he go from here? Does he regret it? Does he get redemption? Does he even survive this version?

What if Frodo still trips Boromir and then Frodo turns invisible and then Boromir says you cannot from run me and then he starts looking for Frodo and then Boromir find him but he’s with Aragorn and he’s talking to Frodo then Aragorn looks over at boromir with anger and he goes over to boromir and punches him in the face Just as he was about to throw another punch Frodo yells Aragorn my sword is growing All three of them look over and they see orcs both Aragon and Boromir Tells Frodo to run we hold them off they fight off the orcs and then Legolas and Gimli comes And helps Aragorn and Boromir out They fight waves of orcs and then the captain orc fight them And Loses To the Fellowship But a lot of orcs get past Them Frodo is hiding behind a tree He looks over and sees Mary and pippin signal him to come over to them One of them says he’s not coming with us They distract the orcs But they are captured Frodo makes it to the boat Sam Meet him there and try swimming to Frodo but he’s drowning Frodo quickly Grab Sam into the boat and then they go other side Legolas says Should we not follow them Aragorn says no Their fate is no longer in our hands Then Gimli says fellowship is lost Not if we hold true to our vowels we can’t let Mary and pippin be tortured to death all right let’s hunt some work Gimli says

I read a letter from Tolkien stating that Sméagol would have willingly cast himself + the ring into the crack of doom, provided that Sam had been nicer to him when he was tilting between Sméagol/Gollum. Would be an interesting what if, “what if Gollum was redeemed?”

    • @spangelicious837
      @spangelicious837 3 роки тому +12

I think this is a case where Tolkien's being a little too optimistic.
      1) Sméagol would have still broken when Faramir's men grabbed him.
      2) To sacrifice himself with the ring, he'd still have to wrest it away from Frodo.
So the end result would have been the same. Now, I can see Frodo sacrificing himself with the ring. Or even more tragically, Sam having to force Frodo (and himself since he wouldn't want to go on living afterward) with the ring into the lava, if Gollum hadn't been there.

@@spangelicious837 Well if there's one dude that can just say "no that's how it is" it was Tolkein, haha. But yeah, to me being able to willingly discard the ring with enough willpower kinda lessens the impact, I greatly prefer the way it turned out.

@@spangelicious837 Once you realize that the LoTR is basically Illuvatar performing an elaborate, "Final Destination" style, death scene on Sauron, you see that the Ring was getting flushed no matter what. Gandalf dies... Nope. Eru says, "Walk it off." Eru could've sneezed the ring out of their hands and into the lava if he wanted to.

I know I´m a bit late to this, but I believe that Sam´s treatment of Sméagol/Gollum was his biggest error, especially when Sméagol was ready to repent when watching the Hobbits sleep until Sam cursed him out. I for one would also like to see what would have happened had Sméagol reemerged as the dominant personality.

    • @professorsassafras
      @professorsassafras Рік тому +1

Well to be fair Sam was actually right at the end of the day, smeagol couldn't controle himself or be trusted. At the end of the day the best way to save smeagol is to have him as far away as possible when the ring is destroyed at which point would Sam throw the ring in the fire since frodo fails idk? But Sam wasn't wrong the problem wasn't that smeagol was bad and unredeamable the problem is that he's a total slave to the ring. Also on another note frodo hoped to rescue smeagol cause he saw part of himself in him and wanted to believe he could be saved cause it gave frodo hope for himself

The scene of Théoden being compared to Orome is on page 838 (illustrated edition by A. Lee) straight below the "Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor"-line, just one page before chapter 6: The Battle of the Pelennor Fields. The sentence goes like this:"Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Orome the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young". Love this scene

Always love these what if scenarios. I think you gave Saruman's plot line a bit of the short end. If his forces are attacking Edoras, rather than Helm's Deep, their casualties would be much lower. So while the march of the ents is probably going about the same, the uruk hai returning would likely have left both sides crippled. Treebeard will keep his promise to Gandalf and make sure the hobbits are safe, but also not have the forces to keep Saruman trapped in Orthanc. At this point, I think that he would likely head west as his forces in Isengard are nothing to speak of. As he didn't have his confrontation with Gandalf, he'd have a stronger control of the Shire and possibly even extends into Bree and the Grey Havens (though I doubt he'd want to draw that much attention from the elves). While this doesn't alter the main storyline from where you took it, there'd be a much darker and more difficult end for the hobbits.

Rather than Boromir taking the one ring, perhaps Boromir's death is the pivot point and driver of the entire story? If Boromir had survived, beating off the Orcs, then the story takes a strange turn. Frodo still heads off with Sam, but the rest of the company, what happens to them? Do they head off to Minis Tirith with Boromir, never going to Rohan, Isengard, Fangorn and the paths of the dead. Boromir dying was essential to the story, with the story dependent on this incident to build the company's story arc.

It was "said" man can't kill him, but that was only true to an extent. The reason aragon beat them at weathertop is because he was not afraid and did not as Gandalf put it "give into fear." the nine operate mostly on terror to weaken opponents. Even if you kill their body they just go to sauron as spirits for another as we see in Rivendell when their bodies are wiped out but reappear later.
Also eowyn would never have had a weakened witch king if merry didn't happen to have a blade from Tom bombadil. This special blade is why it damaged the witch king the way it did. It was filled with the light of eru illuvitar.
So in conclusion, eowyn killing him had much less to do with her not being a man than is given credit on the surface. The movies also did not include Tom bombadil so that got lost in translation. That was if memory serves a statement made that became a prophecy due to the terror and destruction the witch king inflicted and subsequent belief in said "prophecy" that no man could kill him.

Its an interesting scenario, but I cant see anyone voluntarily destroying the ring, even if they've spent limited time with it. Also, passing the ring between them sounds good in theory, but it'll definitly cause conflict between them, each wanting to hold on to it "just for a little while". Sam might be the only one who finds the courage to jump into the volcano and destroy it, or Sauron notice them sneaking in (probably because Pippin does something stupid again :P) and sends the Nazgûl to recover the ring before they reach Mount Doom. I dont know if Im just being tied to the original story, but I feel like unless Frodo & Gollum are in the Cracks of Doom together, the One ring doesnt get destroyed and Sauron wins.
BTW, shame you had to start over, but Im glad to see content quality is still the same. Keep up the good work ;)

OK good vid but you guys have missed quite a lot...
Boromir would not kill Frodo as he would not have too. Gollum managed to get the ring off Frodo in Mount Doom, and Boromir is much stronger. However, having the ring taken from him by force would ruin him (why Gandalf persuaded Bilbo to give it up - this was mentioned).
Boromir would return to Gondor as swiftly as possible but may be tempted to use the ring for its invisibility on the way - I'll come back to him later.
All four hobbits would be captured
The three hunters would be right on the heels of the Orcs as they would not have spent time wondering what had happened to Frodo or burying Boromir. Aragon would be wondering what had become of Boromir and may even have guessed that he had taken the ring but he would never forsake his friends - especially Frodo.
The Orcs would still be taking the hobbits west to Isengard but with the three hunters so close they would be intercepted earlier (before the Eomer's company got involved). Hard to say who would win tbh cos the three hunters are basically unarmoured, Legolas is out of arrows, and they are very outnumbered. However, they are our heroes and they seemed pretty confident so lets assume they will.
So to recap where we are: Boromir has ring and heading south to Gondor.
3 hunters and 4 hobbits recombined somewhere in the Westfold. They would now all know what happened and pursue Boromir.
Boromir would most likely choose to head parallel to the river downstream. I see three possible scenarios:
    1. The ring betrays him somehow (like it did to Isildur)
    2. Gollum (you guys seemed to forget that he was following the company) murders him in his sleep and reclaims the ring.
    3. He safely gets to Gondor
1: I feel this is unlikely as he is on the other side of the river to Sauron so there is no guarantee this will help the ring get back to its master. Also, despite being corrupted he is still strong and afraid for his people so unlikely to wear it and use it when he doesn't need to (at the moment).
2: I think this is actually the most likely scenario. Boromir does not know Gollum is perusing them and would not consider him when he has extravagant plans of saving his nation filling his head. Also the hardest to predict what would then happen. Both sides know about Gollum and would figure it out. Free people probably would first so have a head start. The nazgul are called to the ring but Aragon and Gandalf (and Frodo but not yet) are the only people to have caught Gollum - though he did not have the ring then. Gollum would probably head east back to the misty mountains. Both sides would predict that and try to capture him and regain the ring. If Sauron does - game over. If the Fellowship do what would they then do with it? Can Frodo handle having it again? I think they would attempt to continue their mission to Mordor but with a huge delay the odds would be against them.
3: Boromir gets to Gondor with the ring. I believe his first target will be to recapture Osgiliath. With the power of the ring he would succeed. He would summon armies and power and utterly triumph. And therefore scream to Sauron where the ring was. Faramir's reaction to this would be interesting. He would no doubt caution against it strongly but his father and brother would be utterly for it he would know that his cautions will be annoyed and thus I believe he would keep his loyalty to his elder brother and father.
So assuming scenario 3 for interest:
Catchup - Everyone knows Boromir has ring in Gondor.
Everyone would head to Gondor. Sauron desperate to regain the ring, probably aided by Saruman who thinks he is going to capture it for himself. All the free peoples (possibly excluding elves) would be summoned by the ring. Battles greater than those of the Last Alliance would happen, all won by Boromir but none would be satisfactory such is his thirst to achieve his aims. His goal is to protect his people but every battle brings bloodshed and every victories isolates him more. Note here - he is not becoming like the Nazgul, he is becoming like Sauron. He isn't being summoned and controlled by the ring, he is becoming the ring. The ring has found a strong body to make its host.
Eventually and somehow he will get separated from the ring leading to a repeat in a new age with two enemies not one.

One thing on the defense of Minas Tirith. If the scenario is set up as outlined here, I'm not sure it goes as well as you claim. Sauron's plans in the books are based on a lot of maybes and assumptions, but if he knew for a fact that the ring was in Minas Tirith, it would give him a lot of clarity for his strategic planning. The armies he set to attack the capital comprised "one finger" of his fist, but if they are instead going to retrieve the ring, I don't see Sauron holding much back, and the army at the battle of Pelennor Fields might be four times larger. Hard to see the heroes pulling victory out of that. Great vid though, I think the choices you describe each character making are very accurate.

Great discussion! One thing I wonder about is what the chances are that the ring somehow gets taken by someone when it’s in Gondor. In the films (maybe in the book as well) Aragorn tells Borimir that he wouldn’t take the ring within 100 leagues of the white city (or something to that effect). Knowing that the hearts of men are easily corrupted and that the city has soooo many men/women in it, might the odds be increased that someone, even if it’s not a member of the Fellowship or any of the other main characters, will find a way to get the ring? I also think of Gandalf telling Frodo that the ring “wants to be found”. Might the ring itself sense that it’s surrounded by many corruptible and then “call out” to one of them?

They know he’ll be there and if the Hunter’s wanted to get the ring that’s where they go to get it. However I also believe if Boromir takes the ring to Gondor He could unite the realms of men( Men not corrupted by Sauron) Before the events of the return of the king. With the ring of power he has( I would think )the ability to call upon Rohan and Dale possibly the remnants of the men of the Arnor area. Possibly calling on the Elves and Dwarves as well. To attack Mordor at the Black Gates With the host of men and elves whilst the dwarves of The lonely Mountain and the Iron hill attack from the east. Elrond goes to do battle and after the battle is over kills Boromir and throws the ring into Mt Doom. Boromir died a hero, the hobbits are safe and now Aragon can be crowned High king of Gondor and after a few years of rest start his campaign in the east(destroying the Easterlings.
Faramir becomes warden of the East under Aragon of course. Gimli and Legolas with an army of Dwarves from Erabor and the Iron Hills return to Moria and begins the arduous process of removing the Goblins and Trolls. Elrond leaves for the Grey Havens. Gandalf does Wizard stuff for a while. The Hobbits return to the shire one short but🤷‍♀️and they decide to migrate with their families to The Watchtower. Rebuilding it to its former glory. With the Dark lord dead and the Orcs and Easterlings defeated to the point of extinction almost. The Men of the West come into the 4th age united. Rohan, Gondor and Dale rebuild the east. Dividing it. All is well with the exception of Frodo being dead.

Gandalf would've saved Rohan and trusted Aragorn to track down Boromir. No doubt. Gandalf needs Rohan sooner then he needs Aragorn. If Rohan falls Minas Tirith falls, no paths of the dead, no deliverance of Pelargir, no victory at Minas Tirith and then no march on the black gate. Besides Boromir wouldn't have made it to Minas Tirith anyway. Aragorn is the greatest hunstman of the 3rd age, and the three hunters would catch up to him in a day or 2. Boromir is, by his own words, neither thief nor tracker and doesn't have the experience to throw off an expert tracker like Strider, nor out run Legolas. It's a long way from the falls of Rauros to the Rammas Echor of Pelennor and poor, corrupted, tired Boromir would be tracked, confronted and likely destroyed by the 3 hunters in the wilds of Anorien. I doubt he would've surrendered the ring under any circumstances. After that, they'd have to make a new plan to deliver the ring. I agree that the hobbits, if they survived the war in Rohan, would volunteer to take the ring in Frodo's memory.
The butterfly effect could make this go on and on. Great video, read up though, the movies are great, but the book is the true version. Keep up the great work.

Personally, I don't think Boromir would have killed Frodo because I don't think Frodo would have been able to put up enough of a fight to make Boromir's claim to the ring feel threatened. If Frodo hadn't put the ring on to escape Boromir, I think it would have been wrestled from him easily enough.
My theory! Boromir gets the ring and immediately leaves. Aragorn finds Frodo on the ground and in rough shape and asks where the ring is, and Frodo says "It's Boromir! The ring has taken him, and he has it!" From there, the Uruks arrive and it's a battle that gives Boromir a great deal of time head start. At the same time, the Uruks would never leave without taking some Hobbits and there are too many in the war party for the broken fellowship to merely defeat, I think there would be a strong possibility that one of the 3 tough guys would get killed protecting a couple of Hobbits, and it probably be Gimli if I had to choose based on skill-levels. There's also a good chance that more than 2 Hobbits are snatched since they are all together. Alternatively, the 3 warriors and 4 Hobbits might just make a very difficult retreat across the river, since they all seem to have plot armor anyways and it makes the most sense.
So the 7 companions narrowly escape the Uruks, but they will keep coming. Boromir flees with the ring, and is likely going to be difficult to track since the Uruks are hot on the fellowships tail. And Gandalf still comes back but will have to meet them at a different place in their journey.
Two options happen next. 1. Boromir will like be tempted to wear the ring before he makes it back to Minas Tirith, in which case he then becomes a target for the Nazgul. 2. Boromir's drive to get the ring to Minas Tirith is greater than his temptation to wear it, and he leads the fellowship on a merry chase. Since this scenario still takes into account that it's a Tolkien book and perilous adventures are emphasized, I think Boromir would put the ring on. I think the Nazgul would chase him, and I think Gandalf would catch wind of this from some other source like Radagast or the eagles, etc. Somehow Gandalf would come into this knowledge. With haste and Uruks on their tail they would venture to get the ring back before the Nazgul claim it, and before Boromir and get it to Gondor assuming he out-wits the Nazgul.
Much of the story will probably end the same after they inevitably get the ring back. But I think it offer room for redemption for a living Boromir rather than a dying one, and I think the course would change in that we would get more Faramir and Boromir action in the last battle. I also think Frodo will probably still be forced to go it alone with Sam and Smeagol in the end.
The journey would twist in different directions, but good will always triumph in the end.

Neat to see a LotR what-if where things could still work out in the end, albeit more tragically. A team of Sam/Merry/Pippin honoring their fallen friend by finishing his task is really cool to think about. That said, while I agree three well-rested Hobbits working together would have a greater chance than two exhausted ones, I'm sure it still wouldn't be as easy as it sounds here. Even when Sam had and used the ring in canon he still had to be careful to avoid Mordor's security (and bless Pippin, but we know how clumsy he can be sometimes). And as time goes on and they get closer to Mount Doom it's going to get harder to both carry the ring and maintain the rotation, both due to the ring's influence and just unforeseen issues. For example, say Merry takes a nasty fall at some point, or a bite from Gollum when he attacks, and he's having a hard time with the injury; would Sam or Pippin still feel comfortable making him deal with the ring on top of that for 6 hours, or would they insist on holding on to it for an extra 3 so that he can rest up some more? The more events like that happen, the more things may threaten to break down. By the time they get to Mount Doom it could still be struggle to get rid of the ring.

  • @clarity2199
    @clarity2199 Рік тому

Here's my thought. Now I'm not a LofT scholar, but it was clear they needed a hobbit to take the ring, cuz they're the highest resistant against the ring. So, if the two hobbits met Gandalf, Galdalf came back from his world, knowing the odds are now more against them than ever. If there's any chance to get the ring back, they need a ring bearer that wont be instantly corrupted. So, he'll want to take atleast one of those hobbits to go with him, the other would have to stay to talk to the trees. But with only one of the hobbits there instead of both, he may fail in convincing the trees to go to war.
While Boromir is b-lining back to home to fulfil his duty to his father, while being trailed by the rest. If he succeeds, by the time he gets home, he may assassinate his father and take over, being corrupted by the ring. If he fails and the others stop and possibly kill him....taking the ring from him may cause their own corruption as they begin to fight themselves over it. Some corrupted by greed, tainted self-righteousness, or desire in power, whatever it affects in them, I don't think Gandalf would get there in time to stop the slaughter. And whoever gets it, would take it to wherever they think is best to use the power of the ring, ignoring the corruption it has caused on them. Maybe Gandalf would find the lone person who won the fight to take the ring and have to stop/potentially kill him, then order the hobbit to take the ring so he doesn't touch it. At that ponit Gandalf has a choice. Either follow that hobbit and try to help him make it, or let him go his own accord and try to help the humans. At this point, he may just follow the hobbit to help him on his way faster. At this point, the human cities are done for, the elves all left and Sauran is taking over everything. I think the other hobbit would fail and the trees would not help and instead bring him home. That leaves Sarumon strong and able to go forward and seek out the ring and would find out Gandalf's alive again and would throw everything to stop him. All in all....eventually, I think they'd all fall and Sauron would win in the end.

Here’s my prediction- Boromir physically overpowers Frodo easily, so easily that he incapacitates him with ease, but he spares Frodo. He makes a speedy getaway to Gondor, where Denethor, hopes revived, begins trying to uncover it’s secrets. Sam recovers unconscious Frodo and the two hide, mistrusting all but each other, and decide to stealth after Boromir to recover the ring. Merry and Pippen are taken, things proceed as per usual till the are reunited with Gandalf. The three hunters have neither hide nor hair of Frodo, Sam, Boromir, but we’ll say they track the Uruks as per original believing them to have ALL the hobbits. Events play out well in Rohan. In Gondor there is much celebration, and although Boromir’s aspect darkens, things stay fairly positive. Frodo and Sam try to recover the ring, but are put into confinement along with Sméagol, who is spared execution by Denethor, who begins to harbor doubts about the ring and it’s effects upon its bearers. Sauron confirms that the ring is in Gondor, and tries to bargain for it, and when that fails, sends the wraiths naked to steal it, while assaulting the outer regions of Gondor and having Corsairs raid the coast. Gandalf and the Rohirrim arrive, slap some sense into Boromir and co, and recover ring and bearer. The siege happens, and Gandalf sends Legolas, Sam, Frodo, and Sméagol through Shelobs lair, perhaps with the best of Gondor’s rangers. They are better equipped and fend off Shelob, and proceed towards mount Doom. Frodo tries to claim the ring, Sméagol attacks him, and the party slays Sméagol and restrains Frodo. The ring is cast into the fire or falls on in the struggle. The siege at Gondor is costly, but they last long enough to see it broken with the death of Sauron. Aragorn takes his throne, and makes Boromir the leader of his forces in Harad as he roots out Sauron’s presence there, with Faramir as his lieutenant, and Denethor still serving as Aragorn’s Steward. Everyone else still gets their normal ends here…

I personally don’t believe Boromir would have gotten very far. I just don’t see boromir being able to just dip out of the area and just get away. Let’s say the battle lasted like a half hour (in the movie they had time to fight, regroup, have boromirs funeral before sun down so it couldn’t be that long) . Then it takes the hunters a hour to locate Frodo’s body and deduce what happened. That’s only a hour and half head start for Boromir. Boromir is a badass but he’s still a normal human running in the woods from a super human who’s spent most of his life as a ranger and a elf who can see miles ahead , has super hearing and can sleep and run at the same time. They would find Boromir and kill him before he even leaves the forest. I’d think that Aragorn would ask legolas to carry the ring until they can figure something out while the pursuing the Uruk hai. I’d say things could resume going as they did in the movie up until they run into Gandalf who’d be like “dude tf I was gone for 5 mins” I’d assume Gandalf would Maybe give Sam the ring then send all 3 hobbits to Mordor and maybe send Gimli or Legolas with them.

Great video. I agreed with almost everything. My only counterpoint would be that I think the most likely end for Boromir would be for him to sacrifice himself to give Eowin the chance to kill the Witch King. How else would he be defeated otherwise?

The question here is. With hobbits in Isengard and Eowyn dead, who kills the Witchking during the battle?
Will it just come down to Gandalf having to do the dead? There is nobody else who could I think at that point.
Unless Gimli axes him, cos he is a dwarf so technically not a man, and Legolas kind of snarks "That's also just one." to repay for the oliphant

Gandalf as a Maiar needs to make his first objective of the ring not falling into the hands of Sauron. Gandalf takes the ring from Boromir and Denethor, gets on an eagle and fly bombs it into Mt Doom. Like he should have done from day one. Then he goes to Rohan with Aragon and an army to liberate Rohan. Game over

The Eagle is taken out by Mordor's giga-army before it even gets close, or by the Nazgul. And Gandalf is forced to use the ring if he wants to stand a chance of getting to Mt Doom, and by the time he gets there the ring has already claimed his heart and mind and he refuses to destroy it cause none, not even Sauron, have the will to harm the ring that close to Mt Doom.

The ring then went to Gondor. Once there, Faramir would slap the shit out of Boromir. His moral compass would point in the right direction sooner. Then the ring will get back on Frodo.
But, but side paths then, that is again open to discussion 

Not to say just the unfluence of the ring, but each characters motivation. Boromir sought power to give him the strength to defend gondor, aragorn sought strength to almost deserve the power to save gondor
I also don't see Gandalf the white ignoring saurman of many colors, I don't think he'd leave him as a problem to deal with after sauron. Gandalf seems to see the chess pieces as they're moving. Gandalf the white is the master tactician of the 3rd age, he knows that without the help of elves and dwarves that men must depend on each other. He knows Minas tirath cannot stand against mordor AND isengard without Rohan

Boromir would have the fellowship arrested once they tried to enter the citadel. Boromir is a effective military leader and would have his peoples support. Even if he doesn't arrest them. Rohan needs to aid minas tirith and the men of the mountain need to aid Aragon and... They have to stop the Hard invading from the sea. I don't think it would be the same outcome because the battles at helms deep is different. The enemy know where the ring is because of boromir and this time Rohan doesn't help the seige of minas tirith. So the question is Aragon can't go confront boromir because he needs to go to the men of the mountain and make them fullfil their oath. With out them they will definitely loose the war without Rohan. Forgive my misspellings I just woke up lol. Good video

Boromir would never get to Cair Andros much less Minas Tirith with the Three Hunters Chasing his butt. Assuming they buried Frodo, they were only a few hours behind him they knew where he was going. That is why I said Cair Andros. The Rangers probably had a base there.

The corruption of the One Ring is stonger/faster the stonger whoever has the ring is, if Boromir took the ring he would be corrupted very fast, it's useless for Gimli/Legolas/Aragorn to follow Boromir because they can't resist the ring influence, only hobbits who are among the weakest on middle earth can endure it longer.
Events in Rohan would have played mostly the same, but by the time Gandalf+others get to Gondor they would've found it fortified and in a state of civil war beetwen Boromir and Faramir.
Boromir gets back with the ring, Denethor is pleased at first but at some point he tries to force Borormir to give him the ring, Boromir kills Denethor but doesn't become the next steward, he climbs the stairs and proclaims himselft king, and get's ready for war and to defend his ring/kingdom. Not everyone is happy with this and many join some sort of resistance under Faramir.
However it plays out from here Sauron has won since Gondor is divided, and all the secrecy in the mission is lost.

I don't really agree with your version of what happens in this scenario, especially in Minas Tirith.
    1) As you stated Boromiur knows the 3 Hunters are cooming for him so I don't think he would just let them come. He would probably order his guards not to let them get to him so before reaching the throne room, The 3 Hunters and Gandalf would have to deal with many Guards of the Citadel.
Let assume they reach the throne room without any of them being wounded. Boromir would most likely kept a handfull of guards inside the throne room so, just like what happens in the movie when Gandalf and the 3 reach Edoras' throne room, the 3 would have to deal with the guards when Gandalf would (try to) free Boromir just like he freed Theoden.
But Theoden was an old man and Saruman's grasp on him had caused him to be even weaker. Boromir's very different. Boromir's in his prime, he's a great warrior and even through the Ring, Sauron's influence is probably much stronger than Saruman's influence. So, at this point, I don't think Gandalf would succeed and free Boromir. Then, what I think would happen is a swordfight between Boromir and Aragorn. A fight Aragorn would win but because Boromir is under the influence of the Ring, he wouldn't give up until he's dead. And I think Aragorn wouldn't have thought that Boromir would will to keep on fighting until, even once he's dead, that the onlmy way to defeat him is to kill him. so It's very possible that Boromir would badly wound Aragorn. And if Aragorn's seriously wounded he can't join the Grey Company, he can't get the Army of the Dead and he can't even fight in the Battle of Pelennor Fields. In other words, there's no way Minas Tirth doesn't fall
    2) I don't think Merry and Pippin would join Sam and go to Mordor. We don't know what he had in mind but from the very beginning of the Fellowship, Gandalf choosed to join Frodo, Elrond even tells that this might be he's ultimate task in Middle Earth so I think Gandalf would go with Sam. And he won't let Merry and Pippin join them. It would be just Sam and him

  • @neilbodwell9172

I don't think Boromir would have intentionally killed Frodo, it definitely would have been a heat of the moment sort of thing. He'd have had to kill Sam as well though most like unless as y'all said Sam linked up with Merry and Pippin.

Imagine the ring would betray boromir like it did isildur and boromir would get no where near gondor. Then saruman would have the ring, so sauron would send his army to fight saruman. Then the fellowship would send there army to finish of saruman's army while they sneak into orthanc kill saruman. Then have a leisurely stroll to gondor pop the ring into mount doom. Then go home and put there feet up.

For the meeting at the throne-room, everyone there is now doing it for the wrong reasons. Boromir has murdered the ring-bearer and then his father. The others are all stressed out over the betrayal. I think somone would end up using the ring after that - Boromir or Aragonr most likely, but perhaps the most tragic option (and this is now a tragedy), Gandalf.

Frodo might have been worn down by the ring, but he also had experience with it. The 3 hobbits playing tag with the ring under the eye of Sauron seems fanciful. Still, it would be possible, if they ever got the chance.

Do you think Denethor would have still lit the beacons if he saw the destruction of Rohan through the palentir? How would Eomer, and particularly Erkenbrand be aware the beacons are lit with the fall of Edoras? I don't think that reinforcements from Rohan would come as easily as predicted here. Theoden would still be corrupted and the defense of Rohan would be little to non-existent. Sauruman orcs would likely occupy and destroy Rohan instead of returning back to Isengard (unless some message can get through the ents to Isengard). I can't see Eomer abandoning his people in Rohan to support Gondor and Erkenbrand would be cut off on the west fold and unable to assist in Gondor to the east, atleast not in time for the attack on Minas Tirith.
