Comparing these two vehicles is like comparing a Ford Model T to a Horse Carriage a century ago.
One was familiar to most, while the other was not simply the future, but the from there on out. History repeats itself.
Check out the article about young man’s experience with the Rivian during the hurricane that hit Asheville,NC recently. His Rivian was partially under water and still started up and no incursion of water into the cabin. Impressive
I saw that! Really cool
It was fake. The guy was proven to be scamming. The mud on the truck alone set off red flags.😅
@@Japplesnapscamming who?
@@maxtvtvtv8623 Scamming whoever believes his fake story. Including the local media.
I love how when you're talking about the Rivian's interior, you're excited and enthusiastic. When you're talking about the Tacoma's, you sound very monotone and bored.
hahaha not intentional
@@Gjeebs Well, compared to the Rivian, the Toyota is boring so....
Yea the Tacoma interior is pretty bad though,
@@vxnova1 I wouldn't say bad, but definitely not as good as the Rivian's.
Before I got my Tesla I EXCLUSIVELY drove Toyotas, they’re reliable beyond words and simple to repair. But it’s just that .. they’re SIMPLE. They’re sooooo boring to drive and be inside of, but by god they’re reliable.
My Corolla XRS was still boring on the inside, but was a fantastic car to drive.
I still think the F-150 Lightning is the right electric truck for "TRUCK" people. It's in the giant F-150 aftermarket ecosystem, it has a standard mid-size bed so anything that fits on or in a normal F-150 bed will fit on the Lightning. While it charges at a lower rate than the Rivian, because the F-150 holds itself at its max rate longer, they actually charge from
Ben ..cmon, the only thing these two trucks have in common is their relative size. But 50k vs 90k, EV vs ice, air suspension vs static, these are two very different vehicles. If your comparing used Rivian’s then you should compare used Tacoma’s. This just isn’t a like for like comparison.
Very enjoyable automotive journalism. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! I'm planning to part ways with my X3 at the end of the year. I'm a pavement princess, and I was trying to decide between these two. Low key rather save the money and stick with the Taco.
Appreciate what you are doing but the R1T you have is $90K however the R1T starts at $70K and the $70K version is still fully loaded just with a smaller battery. Would have been best to mention the starting price of the R1T in the begining of the video, many people will be turned off by a $40K difference in price in regards to comparisons. There really is only a $16K difference in price between these two vehicles when you compare capability and comfort the 16K is very understandable.
Yeah I think that’s relevant, too.
I did mention that later in the video but yea up front would have been better
@@Gjeebs Technically if people use your Rivian code the difference in price is $15K so even better value.
Even the non performance rivian is quicker and the standard battery has the same range. No locking dif in the Rivian so off road the toy wins. Toyota also wins for reliability. Still I went from a gx470 to the R1S. The rivian will run on all fuels ultimately; clean, green or legacy.
I have an R1T, a family member has a Tacoma, they would rather have my truck, I would rather have my truck. Other then then the size being close, the Tacoma just doesnt compare.
Nice vid! Hows the lane centering + adaptive cruise for the Taco with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0?🎉
@9.2 Hmmm..."A reach from behind and send it back up."
It’s very hard to go back to gas. Love my R1T
Yea it has to be something really compelling
@@Gjeebs my second Model X is giving me issues again. First one was bought back. If they buy this one back it’s either R1S or go back to gas minivans. 🤷🏻♂️
Very good analysis, thank you
Used Rivian R1T is going for as little as 55k-65k. A new tacoma trd pro/trailhunter is $66k msrp.
You shouldve used the TRD Pro for comparison
“Adventure Hole” 😂
I AINT MISSING THIS BABY!!!
they are not really competing in the same market. Actual competitors of the R1T, especially the quad motor, are the likes of Raptor and TRX. And with those it is competitive even price wise
I’ve owned three different Tacomas over the past 20+ years. I would prefer the Rivian if I could afford it.
Daddy doesn't like to go to the gym. Never heard a more true statement.
Tesla should have just taken a model y frame and added a small bed with a cab on it and it would have been a great small truck. Not everyone wants a huge truck at 100k. It would have killed. Now thay are using a similar model y platform for the cybercab. They could have used one platform for several vehiles and probably built them all on the same line.
It should be noted that the Tacoma’s range computer is extremely conservative on that range number. I often get nearly 350 miles of range per tank with mine, even though it shows 290 on fill up. The Rivian probably never gets to use all 300+ miles of range for battery longevity, right?
The taco gets 300-350 miles of range per tank, easy. Just fyi. You can fill up in about 3 minutes too. Also, the taco starts around $30K vs the rivian in the upper $60K range, I believe.
With the Tacoma you have to visit gas stations every week of the year, sometimes twice in a week. To pump and pay for gas, the stops are often a lot longer than 3 minutes, especially at Costco.
So for an ICE vehicle, you're spending several hours a year at the gas station and then more time wasted changing oil.
With the EV, for most people, you're charging at home 50 weeks or more per year. No wasted time.
For the occasional short EV road trip, stopping for 20 or 25 minutes for charging is convenient, especially if you like to eat, use the restroom or stretch your legs.
How often do most people drive 1,000 miles from home on a 2,000 mile road trip? That's a waste of time.
Take a jet and get there in a few hours. Rent a vehicle at your destination.
EV charging just isn't an issue for most people.
Tesla sold 1.3 million EVs in 2022.
Tesla sold 1.8 million EVs in 2023. That's more EVs than Ford sold in trucks.
@@dvader3263 I’m not hating on EVs tho. Both have their pros and cons. An oil change takes about 30 minutes every 5,000 miles or so if you do it yourself. Gas stations are everywhere, although I am seeing more and more charging stations popping up. It takes me roughly 3 minutes to fill up my gas tank with 15 gallons of fuel, anecdotal, I know, but still, you don’t have to buy gas at Costco either. Your house also needs to be set up for charging an electric vehicle, doesn’t it? Like if you just use a regular 120V extension cord to charge your vehicle, doesn’t it take like a week to charge it? EVs also weigh significantly more, and will wear out tires a bit faster and actually cause more damage to the roadways. ICE vehicles produce CO2 and CO, and other bad exhaust gases, but it will also last significantly longer (with proper care) than an EV, which require emissions to produce and also consume electricity which, in most cases, is produced by natural gas and oil burning (not to mention the production of the batteries). ICE autos can be fixed fairly easily if they break… not too sure about EVs to be honest, but there’s a lot of software and programming involved most likely not something you can slide under in your driveway and fix.
EVs are great, but for the time being, I’ll stick with what I know is gonna work for my lifestyle. I don’t need more than one vehicle, and I do need a truck. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’d be caught dead driving one of those cybertrucks… I do like the rivians a lot, but I don’t think I need one at the moment, and it’s too nice of a vehicle that I’d be pretty upset to get scratched up.
I don't think there is a comparison between a 50k and a 90k truck. It just two different people
You just watched it
The R1T can be optioned up to 120K if you want but it starts at $70K fully loaded just with a smaller battery pack that gets you 270 miles of range rather than the 340 that he talks about in the video, other than the range there is no differences between a highly optioned R1T and a base R1T
Rivian is in development of its reputation as a new auto maker, Toyota has been maintaining/defending their reputation as a long established automaker. Two very different ambitions at play here.
R1T needs to start at 50k. Offer a base product cause at 70k its still too high for a small truck. Hopefully they can lower their BOM costs soon cause they are still losing alot of money. At this point they should have sold enough to lower BOM. I'd rather get a rivian vs totyota but not at that price. As a tesla owner id rather get a rivian over a cyber truck. CT is way too over priced. Rivian just needs nacs.
If rivian was 50k it would be a no brainer it would be my first choice but with that price hmmm. Its cost prohibitive for me anyway,
You only have that Assurance if Rivian doesn't go bankrupt which is better than 50/50 over those 8 years
Makes sense the Taco runs on gas.
Taca all day long. Rivians r fugly. I drive a model y perf btw. I also think cyber truck is fugly but like the lightening
This is a supported commercial for Rivian..?. I hear the horsepower difference, for sure. I have a ‘21 4Runner ORP and was hoping to see a real for off- road comparison here, but might just be moot. Rivian sounds like shitty resale, lots of horsepower (much more than my gas hog 4Runner) but maybe questionable power sources (based on your home’s electric power sources (coal? Natural gas? Hydro?) and likely adding an outlet for a vehicle that has lithium batteries we fracked for and will have to dispose of ..I’m sure the difference in daily cost (once you get the charger in your garage, pay 2x for the vehicle) might bear out if you keep the vehicle (x amount of years (I’m not looking up these constants .. I’m too tired for even basic algebra and I’m unlikely to buy a Rivian even if it all makes sense (not seeing that here)) BUT I do really love the idea of an electric vehicle! So as of now, we crap those batteries back into the earth in “X” years? Wait what was the resale on a used Rivian? Perhaps I undervalue storing fish under the hood and a special cubby for golf clubs. Damn, my 4runner does have so few cubbies! Definitely room for a dog tho
A whole nother? Or a whole other?
Why not do a comparison with a standard dual motor? Wouldn't that be more of a level playing field
I am just working with what I have
buy the Rivian the toyota tacoma is just ugly and its engine is terrible
Please don't ever say "adventure hole" ever again. It's a gear tunnel.
Tacoma Engine is garbage!
RIVIAN service blows. No thanks.
