Probably kept it under wraps for that surprise element - a great marketing tactic ! And Super Mario is a phenomenal game. I’ve been playing it since when I was 6 years old. I currently own a Nintendo switch - it’s a lot of fun.
Hey i have a question, me and my friend traded games, i gave him kirby and he gave me odyssey and i had an amazing time with it and i like it very very much and i wanna play it again...but i don't want to trade with that friend anymore since he almost broke my game, i knew he wasn't gonna look out for it but i still wanted to play odyssey badly and told him multiple times to look out for the game and when i got it back i had to insert it into the switch and out 15-20 times for it to work and even now a year later it still can have software errors and kick me out of the game. Now, since i allready beat the game and all is it worth it to spend 60$ just to play it again?
The fact that I didn't have to look back to know what you mean shows a lot of my knowledge of gaming styles with a controller. lol I knew people that gamed like that though and found it easier.
They knew how to do it. *Theres a difference between Nintendo and EA* you see: Nintendo's core value is to make fun and enjoyable games while EA focuses on addictive (hence I used ADDICTIVE and not FUN/ENJOYABLE) money hogging titles.
Im sorry but how does Miyamoto intend for me to acquire a sense of pride and accomplishment without providing me a way to purchase these feels by way of microtransfeelgoods? An artist who does the writing even though he's so bad at it, rather than hiring a competent writer. A man who "avoids trends" while rehashing the same games over and over, in sequels that are less sequels and more slightly different retellings of the same story with minor alterations and a brand new price tag. Truly a visionary.
@@hazukichanx408 Cuz Nintendo creates games like that! Once you play a Nintendo game you are so immersed into its world you want more. Yes you want more of the same, you want the story to continue, you want the legend to continue. That's why these games have contributed to our childhood so much. Plus another factor I have noticed is Nintendo games constantly make you work, through puzzles dungeons and what not, they confuse you again and again till the end. It adheres to the saying, there is the reward in the accomplishment. That's another reason I like to play these time to time.
Yeah, it's usually a good idea to form your own identity to stand out from the crowd, though with all creative ideas, an interesting concept is not going to go very far without a proper execution, which seems to be a pitfall even the likes of Miyamoto can't avoid forever unfortunately, if some of his track record has shown us.
They almost second-handedly did it all. They may be the greatest and most successful companies. They invented countless classic games, and created one of the first consoles and created the kind of controller you see today with the NES in 1983, then Sega followed that, then you have the Nintendo 64 (one of the best early box-consoles), GameCube (some say better than PS2), Game Boy, DS (greatest hand-held), and Wii (first motion control).
@@TudBoatTed The Mega Drive is most likely their best console and it was known for more than just Sonic. It had great RPGs, beat 'em ups, and otherwise fighting games. SEGA also had some series before the likes of Nintendo's SNES/N64 and Sony's PlayStation, and even invented some. It was also famous for its advance D-pad and 6 action buttons. They started in arcades even before Nintendo and had some early home consoles, as well, and Sonic is really great and the best thing they did. Some would say Sonic is the best thing outside of Nintendo. But, Nintendo is clearly the best, but, SEGA did not 'suck'. That's just not true.
How playstation works: -Wants to be the best by taking whatever others do and trying to make it better. How xBox works: -Wants to have all connected with it's windows systems. -Own exclusivity. How Nintendo works: -Doesn´t even mind about what others do or whatever is the trend. -Allways surprises with it's creativity and brilliant revolutionary ideas. -Cool for kids, awesome for adults.
They did get the rights to Popeye. They even made a Popeye arcade game and game & watch title. It was also released by Nintendo on famicom as one of the first famicom titles alongside Donkey Kong. That's why I never understand that story.
All because they didn't have the Popeye license we ended up getting Mario, Peach, Toadstool, Donkey Kong, Bullet Bill, Yoshi, Wario, etc....all the way to the lowliest creatures in the Mushroom Kingdom! ...I also believe Mario has a brother.
Many Nintendo employees might've once disagreed. Because of how tedious programming was in the 80s, it was said that the staff would feel fear when they heard Miyamoto's footsteps down the hall, because his perfectionist mentality meant that constant improvements to the level design and gameplay kept programmers busy with a lot of work under time constraints.
Remember this video was made before the switch came out. The newest 3D Mario game then was 3D World, and odyssey has already sold over 3 times the amount that did, and is still selling!
The camera angle of Miyamoto is so good that it looks like Miyamoto is looking right in your eyes and speaking with you while you sitting there in front of him live.
Despite some “underrated” games this man has made, he’s still an artist and deserves the recognition he gets. Theirs a lot of artists out their we don’t give enough credit to for the art they make, even the failed art pieces. But just because some people said it’s “a failed piece of art” doesn’t mean it’s true. It’s a learning curve, a sign of growth, and an insight into your mind. Let’s give credit to this man, his art and the other artists involved with these ideas at Nintendo. They deserve it more than you would ever know.
"It's a trend. And I try to avoid all trends." That is why games aren't selling like they should be now, is because too many developers are doing what is expected of them by their fanbase via social media and message boards/forums on what games to create.
Take a look at Zelda Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey. Everyone can complete the story after some time. However these games still have so much content for players who want to become an expert in this game and can encourage players to continue on playing the game, even when the main story line is completed. Most of the todays open world games are so huge that players are forced to play alot to end the main story but at the same time players have to do the same things all of again. Nintendo found the perfect balance between in dept potential for a game, awell as people who just want to complete the storyline.

It's a bit odd that you interviewed a Japanese man who works for a Japanese company to make Japanese games in Japan, but never once talked about how the industry worked in Japan, and only ever talked about America.
the biggest gaming company in the world is actually not a US one, its Nexon, and they mostly operate out of asia. the asian video game market is way bigger then the US but they are mostly a pc gaming market which us american console plebs dont like to talk about.
Are there reports of this actually being true for Sony and Nintendo's gaming division? Console is still far more popular in Japan than it is in China,South Korea and Taiwan where PC gaming is king.
"Most Asian companies (besides china) get they're money from primarily the US." That's not true. Europe is a bigger market than North America, and East Asia is a bigger market than Europe.
i guess it's like they say, sometimes the best ideas are the simplest. and the genius of Miyamoto is because he knows how to make everyone enjoy a game. Super Mario Run, for example, was on the right note too: my Mom's liked Mario ever since I had a Super NES, but she's awful at gaming (she could only play one stage of Super Mario World, and never really grasped the concept of dash-jumping), but she's been having a good time playing Mario Run, because it's such a simple working concept.
the game can help ease new players into the series. if they really like the game, they may buy a proper mario game, and then get hooked on the wonderful series.
You guys at Vox really do make the best mini documentaries I see on youtube. You've got interesting topics/subjects, technically well made videos, and i can tell you really do your research (that kanye video was amazing as well). Really good work here. I'm glad I subscribed.
It's a shame that the Wii U was such a flop when Nintendo was on top of their game for that whole console cycle, making some of their finest masterpieces ever. Luckily, they're back in full swing now that the Switch has unbelievably become the fastest selling console of all time. AND they're porting many of those incredible Wii U games to it that folks missed out on. It's sad that lots of people won't ever experience the masterpiece that was Super Mario 3D World, but everybody go buy Tropical Freeze when it comes to Switch, y'hear? Long live Nintendo, and long live Miyamoto.
I've actually watched this whole video during the time of the Nintendo Switch presentation which was also before that console's launch. I've completely enjoyed watching it like a documentary film and I've also learned from him on how a game is designed. Therefore, I finally know the truth on why he has made my childhood super awesome starting with Super Mario 64. I wish other people could learn from him as well. *cough* Newgrounds *cough*
It must feel so good to have created something so impactful across the world. Seeing all the news about how the Mario movie is breaking records every week makes me feel very proud of Miyamoto. Mario has come such a long way!
Good video overall, however the video game market was not about to crash in 1981 when Donkey Kong was released - it was still experiencing a meteoric rise with the 2600 and with arcades especially.
Home console crash was in '83, arcade crash was in '84 in NA. Atari also hit a stone wall later in '83. Not that it mattered anyway since when eventually the piracy gates fully opened on that console later on.
then when was it about to crash? (Because there was a video game crash in 1983 so at that point, people were mass producing arcade units that were about to lose all relevance. So it is rather incredible that Miyamoto made an arcade unit that sold well and was incredibly popular at a time like that.)
How on earth enjoy playing a mobile phone game ?Shitty graphics ,tiny screen and the worst is the contols .Save snake i never managed to enjoy any Other mobile game .How on eath can you play an action rpg or racer on a phone ?Anyway ,console gaming is stronger than ever
who's to say that mobile games won't carve out a sizable niche in the future? Sure mobile games right now suck, but who knows what kind of mobile devices we'll be carrying around in the future. Obviously Angry Birds, Clash of Clans, and whatever games people are playing on phones right now won't suddenly take over the entire gaming market, but we may have some really cool mobile devices and software in the future.
Mobile game sucks you know why ? because it eats your battery, So when you have to use your phone for its intended purpose aka communicate you have no more battery left. That's why I will never play on my phone again
gAm a Weak argument. You have access to cheap, compact and good portable powerbanks. High-tier phones have much more maH capacity, so it doesnt drain that much. And its not like, that many play handheld consoles or in this case mobile games at home or somewhere with access to an outlet. And this comes from someone who prefers consoles. You people dont have to goof on some other part of the gaming world, just because it could be inferior in some aspects. There will always be pro and cons, be it a home console, a handheld or your phone. And the main positive thing of phone mobile games are, that many people have access to it. A smartphone became so universal, that most people can enjoy gaming. Not everyone, especially casuals ARENT elitists like you people, who have the will to buy extra a console just to play. And if you can do it in some other way with your phone, than it surely obviously appeals to a certain different and big audience.

Though I'm not a big fan of Nintendo,
I must say that they're philosophy when It comes to game design and design in general is inspiring.
@@TheClassicWorld but the sega sucked though lol, except for sonic
@@TudBoatTed The Mega Drive is most likely their best console and it was known for more than just Sonic. It had great RPGs, beat 'em ups, and otherwise fighting games. SEGA also had some series before the likes of Nintendo's SNES/N64 and Sony's PlayStation, and even invented some. It was also famous for its advance D-pad and 6 action buttons. They started in arcades even before Nintendo and had some early home consoles, as well, and Sonic is really great and the best thing they did.
And I try to avoid all trends."
That is why games aren't selling like they should be now, is because too many developers are doing what is expected of them by their fanbase via social media and message boards/forums on what games to create.
Nintendo found the perfect balance between in dept potential for a game, awell as people who just want to complete the storyline.

i guess it's like they say, sometimes the best ideas are the simplest. and the genius of Miyamoto is because he knows how to make everyone enjoy a game.

Luckily, they're back in full swing now that the Switch has unbelievably become the fastest selling console of all time. Good video overall, however the video game market was not about to crash in 1981 when Donkey Kong was released - it was still experiencing a meteoric rise with the 2600 and with arcades especially.
Boxcar Bomber I'm with him
Pat the NES Punk the video game market was near crashing in late 1981. In 1983, it was incredibly failing.
Pat the NES Punk hello?
Home console crash was in '83, arcade crash was in '84 in NA. Atari also hit a stone wall later in '83. Not that it mattered anyway since when eventually the piracy gates fully opened on that console later on.
then when was it about to crash? (Because there was a video game crash in 1983 so at that point, people were mass producing arcade units that were about to lose all relevance. So it is rather incredible that Miyamoto made an arcade unit that sold well and was incredibly popular at a time like that.)

Mobile games are just time wasters. Actual console games or pc games will always be superior
who's to say that mobile games won't carve out a sizable niche in the future?
