In addition to her well-known autobiographies, Maya Angelou has steadily written poetry over the years. In this video Professor Angelou recites her poem, "And Still I Rise," from her volume of poetry And Still I Rise, published in 1978.

Still I Rise
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain

I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Spiritually strong women are so necessary...... For most of my life this woman has impacted me. As she suggested that we do, I carry her spirit with me too. She came right on time, and she'll forever be in our hearts. (Every life that she has touched.) We love you Dr. Maya Angelou.)

I never get tired of listening to this poem by Maya Angelou. So meaningful, so truthful, yesterday, today and tomorrow.
What a remarkable woman she was! I admired her then and now and I loved her so much.
Her voice is soothing and despite her triumphs, she rose and showed her heart, soul, body and Almighty God that she learnt, listened and behaved like a Godlike child of the universe.
She delivered all the blessings from her heart to people like me and I’m sure many others.
She fought for the truth, the slaves, the ancestors, whether black or brown because she knew and felt what they endured. My God, to this day, rubbish still goes in this crazy world but people like Maya, puts a little sunshine in our hearts and keeps our hearts beating. What a beautiful sound to hear. Our heartbeats, and so, the rhythm goes on and on……….

You knocked me over when I saw you
When you spoke you reeled me in
Your words tasted like velvet chocolate
I swallowed your hook completely smitten
Your smile worn like lace stockings
Eyes dazzled like two sunbeams
Your dulcet tones hit me like a high speed train
As I watched you do your thing
Everything done on purpose
