- Maya Angelou born Marguerite Annie Johnson; April 4, 1928 - May 28, 2014 was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences.
She made a deliberate attempt to challenge the common structure of the autobiography by critiquing, changing and expanding the genre. Her books center on themes including racism, identity, family and travel.

She was so beging her time, so authentic, so genuine, and I hope she knows that, although now no longer with us, she has touched me my whole life. As a Caucasian male, Maya Angelou has always been the inspiration that I put down. Now at 35, I still watch ever single thing she’s done and read every single thing she has written. She really has made me into who I am today.

I went to see her back in 2003, when she spoke at Mac Court in Eugene, Oregon. Just hearing her speak, and sharing space with her was such an experience.

I so wanted to agree... but you know what, no...if you stand up for what's right, people dont' say "oh she's so sweet"... not in ANY environment. I've experienced this in family dynamics and toxic workplaces, let me tell you, bravery is not always easy and you can certain ruffle feathers if you stand up for what's right.
There is no objective right and wrong.
But if your morals are aligned with good principles. Like that - treat others like you want to be treated yourself. Then follow your inner sense of "right". Be truthful to yourself.
