I am now 27 but when I was 19 in college I remember reading and loving Maya's poetry, apparently it never sank in because I've been writing poetry for 9 years and when I came back to her poems today, I realized I've never written a poem in my life. She is amazing in the way she voices the human condition.@@colzypeace2753

Why wouldn't she not be respectful or dignified? I don't know why white people use those words or phrases when referencing us. As if we are incapable of such. It's not a compliment . You might as well use "for a black person at the end of the sentence ." So, give so thought as to why you use that term when addressing our brilliance. ✌🏾
I am a white female,I grew up listening to this amazing soul of a WOMAN!! I hate how people try to tell other people what they can and can't listen to because of the color of my skin, closed minded people are not going to tell me I don't understand what this lady was all about,or I could never understand cause the color of my skin,I am a WOMAN who loves amazing people!
I will be forever stunned by the beauty that is and was Maya Angelou. She was a force of nature if not directly nature herself. In her words she was human. She was mankind that read and spoke life like a book. Her character touched on life from every angle and every corner of the world. She was a mother to all and forever will be. I listen to her when I need to be reminded of the meaning of purpose. Her words always comfort.
I grew up in the south. You can only imagine the things I grew up hearing and as a child assumed was ok. As an adult who is not only a poet myself but very active in stopping any racism I see or hear. This woman makes my soul and eyes cry. She evokes feelings from me before I even know it's coming. When she cries I want to bawl. Not only does she open our eyes to true racism from her time period but she stands for women, minorities and anyone ever judged for something they hold sacred. She grew from a bitterness into a glorious inspiration of love and letting go while still holding true to yourself. 💜 she will forever be my favorite. What a blessing to America she was.
That Mask poem gets me every time. She is so wise and powerful. Yes, "is," because I don't even feel like I'm watching someone who passed away. Love her ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
She was and still is an American treasure!!! No wait! A Life treasure that will surely be missed! Fly High Marguarette. Johnson! Aka The Queen Maya Angelou!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Thanks so much for posting this. I saw it when it was broadcast in 1987 and I've waited ever since then to see it again. this is the deepest poem i have ever heard, it hits home, it hits deep, it makes me question and appreciate black people, we have endured so much, sooo much but we still stand, unmoved, unshaken unfazed, if this poem doesn't want to jump on top of a table as a black person I don't know what will, it is our duty to celebrate our excellence, milestones and our resilience as Black people. Maya thank you for blessing me with your words.Amen.
