I felt this today. I am now 27 but when I was 19 in college I remember reading and loving Maya's poetry, apparently it never sank in because I've been writing poetry for 9 years and when I came back to her poems today, I realized I've never written a poem in my life. She is amazing in the way she voices the human condition.@@colzypeace2753

Why wouldn't she not be respectful or dignified? I don't know why white people use those words or phrases when referencing us. As if we are incapable of such. It's not a compliment . You might as well use "for a black person at the end of the sentence ." So, give so thought as to why you use that term when addressing our brilliance. ✌🏾

I will be forever stunned by the beauty that is and was Maya Angelou. She was a force of nature if not directly nature herself. In her words she was human. She was mankind that read and spoke life like a book. Her character touched on life from every angle and every corner of the world. She was a mother to all and forever will be. I listen to her when I need to be reminded of the meaning of purpose. Her words always comfort.

I grew up in the south. You can only imagine the things I grew up hearing and as a child assumed was ok. As an adult who is not only a poet myself but very active in stopping any racism I see or hear. This woman makes my soul and eyes cry. She evokes feelings from me before I even know it's coming. When she cries I want to bawl. Not only does she open our eyes to true racism from her time period but she stands for women, minorities and anyone ever judged for something they hold sacred. She grew from a bitterness into a glorious inspiration of love and letting go while still holding true to yourself. 💜 she will forever be my favorite. What a blessing to America she was.

Thanks so much for posting this. I saw it when it was broadcast in 1987 and I've waited ever since then to see it again. I was also privileged to see her perform this show live in Scotland around the same period. I was inspired by Maya Angelou. As a white male from a northern European country like Scotland she cemented for me my own truth that we all bleed when cut, regardless of our colour.

this is the deepest poem i have ever heard, it hits home, it hits deep, it makes me question and appreciate black people, we have endured so much, sooo much but we still stand, unmoved, unshaken unfazed, if this poem doesn't want to jump on top of a table as a black person I don't know what will, it is our duty to celebrate our excellence, milestones and our resilience as Black people. Maya thank you for blessing me with your words.Amen.

OMG...... The poem about laughter..... says it all. Caught in a 25 year marriage to a narc (which ended 20 years ago thankfully). Often still question why I stayed and that poem explained why 'when someone endures so that others can survive, that too is love, Lesley' (which is my name!). It was as if she was speaking to me personally. Thank you and God Bless you Maya Angelou, earth angel. x

Soul food. A much needed rest from all the hatred and evil that's constantly provoking us; trying to tempt us to become bitter. May we become the better that this world desperately needs. The world is the people around us.

Reese Anderson at 13:00 min. 😳 I nearly choked ... any white person (as I ) needs to ABSOLUTELY watch from there until she herself is bent over in tears. My God this woman could move your soul with those words and the way she says them.

No one brings poetry into life than this legend! She also talked about self love 18:32 which is very relatable while her poem Still I Rise 34:20 is one of my favorites

Thank you for sharing this...Dr. Maya is one of my favorite poets , person was and continues to be such a treasure a gift to our world.
I adore her ...so much some of which I can't quite explain in words ..
And, in a dark period of my life my years she saved my life through a deep and depliating depression that was healed by reading her poetry daily.
I miss this unforgettable woman for me she taught me so much about life and what is of true importance.
RIP 🙏 Lovely Lady an Angel that visited us and gave and gave. Thank you Maya 🌹.🌿
