Me too….it’s a shame that this wasn’t taught or assigned at my school….we read long fiction works of a community of talking British rabbits. Not hating just thinking what could have been more relevant to a young high school kid like me.

Why wouldn't she not be respectful or dignified? I don't know why white people use those words or phrases when referencing us. As if we are incapable of such. It's not a compliment . You might as well use "for a black person at the end of the sentence ." So, give so thought as to why you use that term when addressing our brilliance. ✌🏾

As a white male I've spoken with many people, read many books and watched many documentaries and movies to try and educate myself on the plight of the black slave throughout US history. In more recent times I've tried to educate myself on the experience of women throughout the history of the world. All of those sources, while filled with information, details and facts never ever come close to helping me understand the true experience of others as does the poetry and words of Maya Angelou.
Her stories and poems invite you in to live the world through her experiences. To really see the world as another. I can listen to her speak for hours on end. A glorious character who I feel so lucky to have had alive during my time here on earth.
Thank you, Dr. Maya Angelou. You're greatly missed.

She was mankind that read and spoke life like a book. Her character touched on life from every angle and every corner of the world. She was a mother to all and forever will be. I grew up in the south. You can only imagine the things I grew up hearing and as a child assumed was ok. As an adult who is not only a poet myself but very active in stopping any racism I see or hear. This woman makes my soul and eyes cry. She evokes feelings from me before I even know it's coming. When she cries I want to bawl. Not only does she open our eyes to true racism from her time period but she stands for women, minorities and anyone ever judged for something they hold sacred. She grew from a bitterness into a glorious inspiration of love and letting go while still holding true to yourself. 💜 she will forever be my favorite. What a blessing to America she was.

OMG...... The poem about laughter..... says it all. Caught in a 25 year marriage to a narc (which ended 20 years ago thankfully). Often still question why I stayed and that poem explained why 'when someone endures so that others can survive, that too is love, Lesley' (which is my name!). It was as if she was speaking to me personally. Thank you and God Bless you Maya Angelou, earth angel. x

There is so much I take away from this video, every aspect of Maya Angelou that she let us all into in this performance is simply too generous. You did your part, you fulfilled your purpose.

Thanks so much for posting this. I saw it when it was broadcast in 1987 and I've waited ever since then to see it again. I was also privileged to see her perform this show live in Scotland around the same period. I was inspired by Maya Angelou. As a white male from a northern European country like Scotland she cemented for me my own truth that we all bleed when cut, regardless of our colour.

I am attempting to learn the television station that aired this 1987 performance on "Live and Unplugged" in Scotland in order to license twenty-two seconds of it for inclusion in her new PBS "American Masters" biography titled "Maya Angelou: The People's Poet" that will air in 2016. Kindly advise. Pat Lofthouse

I can’t tell you many times I have rewatched this. She is an excellent storyteller . When she spoke about what love is, I had to pause and rewind that because when you understand what she said as simply as she said it , it hits you so hard . Love is when you can be seen in the most vulnerable and dehumanized and still assure the survival of another human being; that is love! When I heard that, I heard love is sacrifice .
When God gave his only son , he sacrificed him.
When Jesus died on the cross in the most dehumanize and vulnerable way, yet he sacrificed himself for human beings.
To continue in order to achieve anything you must first sacrifice something rather it’s time, yourself, or something or someone . Love starts with sacrifice.
