    I'm a 31 year old from the Netherlands who's been a lover of Aimee's musical poetry since Lost in Space's release in 2003. And I have yet to find anyone in my circle who either knows of Aimee, likes her music or even appreciates it. I feel like such a fish out of water when I mention her to friends, colleagues or family. Most of the people I know like pop music (I do too!) but Aimee just hits different. The tone of her voice, her music, her lyrics just ignite something inside me I can't describe. Whenever I hear her voice, I almost get a physical reaction to it. She is someone so special to me. It instantly makes me melancholic for some reason. I'm so thankful for her existence. I wish she knew how her music touches people of all walks of life! It's late over here and I'm probably rambling and not making sense. But I just appreciate her so much. She's also so down to earth and real. I find it refreshing in a world where most people are obsessed with how "fun" and "interesting" they appear to others.

      Lee Yan, Yes it is. And, now that she has established her own independent label (SuperEgo), the vinyl pressing is excellent too! She has complete artistic control of the finished product for the first time in her life; and the album is gem like in multiple respects, from performance, to production, mastering, pressing, and awesome iconic packaging. I so look forward to her next project...

    • @leeyan9049
      @leeyan9049 7 років тому +2

      Not so long ago Lucinda Williams did the same. Such independence lets these talented musicians create really great works. Unfortunately their chances to get some big awards, like Grammys, are not so big now.

    • @ivermec-tin666
      @ivermec-tin666 7 років тому +6

      Lee Yan, I haven't had any interest in the Grammy's in decades. The industry has systematically destroyed itself by pandering to the lowest common denominator and pushing out inferior products since the dawn of the CD era. I am heartened that it is possible for a pop artist to survive and produce creditable work despite an industry operated by and for attorneys. It is a niche market, to be sure; but there are people who can hear the difference between art that is simply commercial pandering and art that actually says something about the human condition. No, I don't think Aimee will be taking a Grammy home in the foreseeable future. Given that the major labels cannot press a quality lp to save their lives, that is a strange sort of inverse litmus test.

    • @leeyan9049
      @leeyan9049 7 років тому +3

      +First Name Last Name, that is a very good point, my friend, I can't agree more and I can't add anything else. Such a splendid art will always have its devoted listeners even without big trophies.

    Aimee's smile at 3:47 ... so peaceful. I have always loved her music, back to Boston in the 80's ... through her work with Jon Brion ... first solo work and the Magnolia years. Her craft of her songs, her melodies and her work for me is pretty sublime and transcendent. She's just fabulous.

      It was 1999 and Magnolia for me, though it wasn't until 2003 when Lost In Space came out that I became a diehard fan, and I don't mean the Bruce Willy movie. I saw her several times in the mid 2000s, once with Michael on NYE in Milwaukee. They gave everybody champagne-ya. How cool is that? Haven't paid much attention since Smilers came out. These songs are really good.

    The monkeys were ecstatic, the hippos were over the moon! I saw Aimee on her birthday in Richmond, VA some 7-9 years ago, it was a really special night, at least for us, hopefully for her, too. Love the way she uses old keyboard sounds, trons and Wurlies in the arrangements. Her songs are so smart and fresh, and she makes them real, so poignant with her delivery. The band holds back and lets the music unfold naturally. Everything feels just right. The world may be spinning out of control, but Aimee Mann gives us a little space to breathe and contemplate what is important.

    I went to see Aimee Mann perform in early March of 1996 at Berbati's Pan. It was a last minute decision as I saw an advertised in The Oregonian newspaper. So I drove directly down to the concert hall and it was sold out but as soon as I parked and walked toward the front door there was a hall usher telling others to come back to the back door and he would sell us the last of the tickets at the last minute. They oversold the house, a popular restaurant-tavern that usually packs in the crowds down in Old Town Portland Oregon my hometown. We had to stand shoulder to shoulder in a packed crowd. I was only about 25 feet out from the middle front stage. Of all life concerts have seen in many famous rock stars and photograph them I wish I had photographed Aimee up close in this concert with her band. It's the closest I've ever watched a musical artist perform. The crowd was so tight pressed against each other that everyone was swaying to her music and you felt like it was all part of one movement and sound experience.
    I could see the sweat dripping off her face and soaking her white t-shirt eventually.
    This is a great performances here, as her haunting and beatiful voice hasn't changed in over 26 years.
    Still such a beautiful performer.
    [It's also interesting here that she mentions the Portland Zoo, as she had just played at the night before. I wish I had seen that concert just 4 years ago. I wasn't aware of it but many famous musicians and rock stars that performed here which I've seen over the years, here in our hometown of Portland. It's a beautiful setting up in the West Hills surrounded by the huge City Park, Washington Park, that's actually the largest city park in America, of thousands of acres of wilderness.]
    [I later spoke to her on NPR's Talk of the Nation, on June 7th 2006 for the 40th anniversary of The Beatles Sergeant Pepper's album release, as you can look these up and review the conversations as this discussion show is on NPR every day for 2 hours, and ran a time span of over 20 years. I held the record for calling in and speaking many times to famous people.
    But this was the first time that I actually asked the guest, [Aimee Mann on this particular discussion,] many questions just like the host Neal Conan was doing every day for over a decade. It was a joy to speak to her after she described in the opening introduction, discovering who the Beatles were under a stage name for a new album that she thought was a new group as an eight-year-old in 1967. She had taken her brother's new Beatles album to her friend's home and they played it over and over on a turntable phonograph. It's fascinating to listen to this discussion and how she described her remembrance of this particular famous groups album as an 8-year-old.

    This, well, is an experience to behold, a magician's voice, an appeal to the better parts deep within [me]. Bravo!! Bravo!! Bellissima! Bellissimo!!
    Healing over time, my life endures a TBI and subsequent forms of mental Olympics as a result, gifted to me by undocumented visitors to the U.S. back in 1994, strangers, desperado thieves who happened upon me in darkness. Thank you, band. Thank you, Aimee Mann. It is helpful to have others be concerned with the well-being of those of us who have issues many presuppose are self-inflicted and take any interest beyond what is merely adequate. I am going out of my way to purchase this album as soon as I have some disposable income. Thank you to host, KEXP for recording and publishing.
    Cheers!! -- Jon G Becker, GR, MI.

      Sally enjoy your Aimee journey. I think she is a musician's musician. SO incredibly under-rated. The director Paul Thomas Anderson was so taken, that he developed an entire movie around her songs: "Magnolia." Well worth checking. My desert island CD is "Lost in Space." All killer no filler. Sample lyric: " And nothing fuels a good flirtation/ Like need and anger and desperation." from 'The Moth.'
