There is something heart wrenching about this duet...surely Emmylou must have seen and felt the echo of Gramm Parsons and Townes Van Zandt in Steve Earle's persona at that time in his life, and wondered how long he would be with us, Sometimes there seems to be a fascinating element to Emmylou's personality...she seems fascinated by those men who are her polar opposite, she the clean living angelic artist, they the self destructive downward spiraling uncontrolled poetic rebels. Fascinating.
Why, it may fit his images but it’s my storyline and hardly about rehab or getting out of prison: tske the one passage to Mexico, for instance…that’s about how trips to Cozumel somehow trumped the 60’s 70’s passions
There truly is something heart wrenching about these two amazingly talented people. I followed both of them and I have everything they’ve ever sang on my playlists!
It's funny, Barney Fife, Andy Griffith show. His gal was Emy Loo 💙 Black and white days. What a song. See, Barney's love for his Emy Loo..was that old fashioned, true love. One woman, one love. True ❤️ And it's true in real life, that I can't remember, if I said goodbye 💕
My Husband passed away recently, he had been a junkie in his youth and survived . When he was in Hospital for a liver transplant, Steve signed and gave me his Covers of Townes CD for him ! A good Man ! And the most beautiful heartbreaking Song sung by him and Emmylou , the greatest harmony singer ever !
I'm almost 73 ..and this lyric doesn't really relate to my relationship...but I'm cryin' like a child just listening to it ..Bravo , Steve and Emmylou ..and thank you !!

His writing reaches the core because that’s where he writes from, he is able to articulate the pain and the beauty and all the mist between , with his writing but also his delivery
This must be one of the greatest songs ever written. And to hear it with the two of them together .. .well it's really hard not to cry ... sheer beauty. Steve; thanks for so many, many heartbreaking, thoughtful, intelligent and caring songs.
Agreed , I was too busy praying for a sign , normal breathing, anything to give me Hope , She was Going Home and nothing could stop That 🙏😢 We Never Got To Say Goodbye💔
Maybe a reckoning. But not payback. Don't cling to that thought. It opens up a crack in your soul, and that's where the light gets in. Don't punish yourself. Let it flow through you. Peace to you. 🕊️
Maybe the sadness is a "mule Kick" for all of us that have regrets, regerts, and stories from our past. My only adder is that i listen to this song and many others as motivational tools as i drive forward. Maybe it will help others as well. If you are ever looking for another "mule kick" check out Dylan Earl's (no relation) version of Blaze Foley's "if I could only Fly". -Regards!
Its impossible to describe the mountains of emotion that they have all described for us, and moved within us. THAT is why we love them, ironically, more than words can say : ))
Pulls the breath right out of me. Don’t know why these old posts keep popping up but so glad they do! Steve Earle... legend. Emmy Lou? Complete Angel. Amazing song.
L'amour, la mélancolie, la tristesse et surtout le souvenir des êtres qui ne sont plus et que nous aimons toujours et que nous aimerons jusqu"à notre dernier jour. voilà. Bien à toi.

Wow!! Had never heard this before. Strong and soft at the same time. I could listen to Emmylou all day and every day. The quintessential female country voice. This is an awesome duet.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever; love the versions by each of them on their own, but this brings it to a whole 'nother level. And don't diss the Lanois! I love the beautiful textures his playing brings. Room for all the versions friends. It's just a killer of a song anyway it's done, but these two are two of our best singers alive today and together they're pure magic.
Saw him at the Guinness Fleadh on Randall’s Island in 95 or 96…..(3 days of depraved debauchery so I can’t exactly recall). I’d only known him then for copperhead road. My Irish companion straightened me out that SE went wayyyyyy beyond that slice. He was absolutely unbelivable. I’ve pined away to see him again ever since. He played amongst absolute music royalty at that festival…..Van Morrison, John Prine, Paul Brady, Shane mc Gowan, Richard Thompson and on and on. And he blew my mind!
OMG this is so moving! There is so much irony in this song. "I can't even remember if we said goodby or not." For something like this. When I had to say goodbye to my closest friend it took two years before I could let go. If you think that life goes on forever - it doesn't. What a beautiful song. Steve and Emmylou are both brilliant. What a blessing to be able to see them together. Rick

Hell, these, as with most of Steve's songs, tell stories - one could base films on most all his stuff! Sensational entertainer; I have most of his albums - "Train a Comin' '" and "Shut Up and Die Like an Aviator" are my faves. I've never had the pleasure of seeing Steve perform live, but I did see his son, Justin Townes Earle, live a few years ago. Justin is also a wonderful performer with a great personality - a real 'chip off of the old block'. I'd love to see them perform together. Emmy Lou Harris - what more can I say! This lady has been brilliant for, it seems, most of my life.
And now sadly Justin is gone.
