- Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris play Earle's song "Goodbye" live in concert before a sold-out crowd at the Camp Winnarainbow benefit concert at Herbst Theater in San Francisco, California on September 29, 2022. Goodbye appeared on Steve Earle's fifth studio album, Train A Comin' (1995), and then on Emmylou Harris' eighteenth studio album, Wrecking Ball (1995). Joining them in this performance were Chris Masterson (guitar) and Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle).
Earle and Harris, who were both in town for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival, performed as part of a songwriters' circle at Toward The Fun(ds): A Concert Benefitting Camp Winnarainbow. The camp, founded by Wavy Gravy, is focused on circus, juggling, acting, and clown performance. It provides scholarships to families in need to keep the camp open to all children. Goodbye lyrics:
I remember holding on to you
All them long and lonely nights that I put you through
Somewhere in there, I'm sure I made you cry
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico
One place I may never go in my life again
Was I off somewhere or just too high?
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
[Instrumental passage]
I only miss you every now and then
Like a soft breeze blowing up from the Caribbean
Most Novembers, I break down and cry
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico
That's one place I'll never go in my life again
Was I off somewhere or maybe just too high?
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
No I can't remember if we said goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye

Steve Earle official bio:
Steve Earle remembers exactly when he knew he wanted to be a songwriter. He was barely a teenager, growing up in Schertz, Texas, looking over a copy of a Beatles record. “The little line in parentheses next to ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand,’” said ‘Lennon-McCartney,’ Earle says. “I said, ‘I know who those guys are.’ And then I figured out that they wrote the song. And so that was when I started, you know, trying to write songs. They all had girls’ names for titles for a long time.”
Music was a big deal in Earle’s family and his dad, an air traffic controller, played piano. “My dad wouldn’t let me have an electric guitar,” he says. As a teen, he discovered Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Paul Simon and the Johnny Cash Show. “I always say my job was invented by Bob Dylan,” says Earle. “I’m a firm believer that rock & roll only becomes an art-form because of the lyrics. If it hadn’t been for Bob Dylan wanting to be John Lennon and John Lennon wanting to be Bob Dylan, it wouldn’t have been cranked up to the level of literature that makes it OK for rock & roll to be taken seriously.”
Jerry Jeff is Earle’s 22nd album. He’s released nearly an album a year since getting sober in the mid 1990s, LPs ranging from bluegrass to blues to folk to country. One of America’s most gifted living songwriters, he is singing better than he ever has, working harder. At the moment, he’s writing two books, his second play, and hosts his long running The Steve Earle Show: Hardcore Troubadour Radio on Sirius XM. Throughout the pandemic, he also hosted Steve Earle’s Guitar Town, a UA-cam series about his massive instrument collection. “I’m just trying to stay out of trouble,” says Earle with a laugh. “If I stay busy, then I’m OK.”

@Tim Bracken thanks for the recordings. It's gonna be my Playlist for today as I turn 65. Emmy Lou's music is a big part of the fabric of my heart. Wonder if she will ever perform close to where I live in Nova Scotia , 🍁 Canada.
I used to love listening to Steve Earle but after his comments on guns I refuse to listen to him only came here because of the emmylou
@@Jeff-sl8xzhe was lying about that, too, and has consistently suffered guilt for not serving
When you live on the stage fabrication becomes the skill
Two of the greatest talents ever.
Emmylou’s version of this song (on Wrecking Ball) is one of the greatest recordings of all time. Seriously!
Agreed... With of course direction from Daniel Llanois ..what a combination...
With Daniel Lanois
Agreed! 100%!!
Completely agree. Daniel Lanois' touch complemented the artists' work on this song. The whole album is really super.
It’s haunting and gut punching simultaneously. Probably one of my top 10 albums in my collection.
This is one of my favorite songs I love the music and the haunting melody. I don't think anyone can hear this without remembering someone.
So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song! How are you?
and with the really good ones lol you never get to say goodbye
Betty Allen you are SO right! I remember quite a few people when I hear this song..

Hi
How are things going for you?
Your comments mean so much
I'm truly excited to be connecting with you here
As D H already noted, Emmylou's version of "Goodbye" on WRECKING BALL is unequaled -- one of the most wrenching songs and performances ever. This is lovely and I'm happy to have heard it. But Emmylou's first take just brings me to tears every damn time.
One of the most hot bands called The Hot and based my band off hers and COMANDER CODY every body in the band had to know how sing 200 lyrics or they weren't in my band and they had to play as good as the hot band my sister new over 800 songs ,I knew 450 the rest of that band 200 except for our fiddle player couldn't sing but was the best musician I think I ever played with Tim Knockway changed his name to NIGHTWAY still have great memories Of The Last Straw Band
Rich Horton, I have always thought the same thing, for some reason I always think of Gram Parsons.
Gonna get now and enjoy, technology is so good sometimes! Thank for recommendation 😘😄
I have to pause to get my emotions in check. I'm old and there are so many memories.
In all its simplicity, heart-rendingly beautiful.
A definition of folk is, firstly, lyricism, easily heard words pulled gently through the heart by the music.
Every time"Good bye"hits the waves I feel the story , truth in this song 🎶✌️
two of my favorite people ....my crush is Emmylou even in my 60's
So damn genuine.
So moving, love Steve's honesty, Emmylou adds so much too.
Nice. Finally another post of this song I have not heard.

Two of my favorites right there. Steve recorded a song with a friend of mine awhile back, called Hangman. Bill said Steve was a super nice guy.
I got to hug Emmylou one time. It was over thirty years ago. I wonder if she remembers me 🤔😆
Thanks for posting !
2 incredible legends, still performing at such a high level, in 2022.

Summun in my eye.
Check out Katie Segal s version. You may know her as Peg Bundy , the wife from Married with Children. She has a nice soprano voice that cuts like a knife.
Ok maybe not soprano but she gives a great performance.

Thank you Tim for these recordings. IF ONLY you did a better job on the audio. The audio feed is always available at the mixer board. And when they say no-- it is always available closer. These audio are just not good enough, such an incredible loss. Please get help with your audio it ain't that hard, every time I showed up, I got the freakin audio. Partly with my own shotgun mic, sometimes my own mic on the mic stand, etc.
Always put at least two mics on any live event. Things are crazy, it's hard to get close audio but, the video is pretty useless without sharp audio. Just go right up there and put your own mic, sometimes.
Hi Todd, I'm always open to ways to improve this hobby, so I welcome feedback like yours.
I would LOVE to have soundboard quality sound on my videos. I want to hear which shows you've gone to where the sound engineers were willing to share the soundboard audio. I've never met a single one who was open to that. And understandably so. The soundboard audio is a prized possession. If an artist is going to release a live album or a live video, it would undermine the specialness and commercial appeal of that recording if fans could already get the same quality audio for free from the engineer.
The next thing I think you're talking about is when people use special receivers to capture In-Ear Monitors (IEM) audio. Those recordings are super cool. But as I understand it--and you seem to be saying this as well--you need to be close to the stage to pick up those signals. I tend to shoot from farther back--often up in the balcony--so I can frame the shots the way I want. When I'm up close near the stage, I can't get the wide shots I want. (And it's also more obtrusive and distracting to other people when I shoot up close).
You mention placing a microphone at the stage. Again, I'm always shooting in the back, so that's not really viable. Besides, most of the shows I go to, I can't even physically reach the stage because there's a barrier in the way, and I honestly can't imagine security being cool with me placing my own objects on the stage. Which shows have you gone to where they were cool with you doing that?
You also suggest a shotgun mic. I'll be very curious to hear how you juggle that *and* a camera at the same time, but the way I shoot, that would simply be impossible. I use a little pocket-size Sony camera with a nice zoom lens. (The venues I go to won't allow anything bigger or fancier). It literally weighs about half a pound. So when I shoot, I have to hold the camera steady with both hands. (A tripod would obviously solve for that, but the venues I go to don't allow tripods either; there's also a camera grip, which I just ordered and am eager to test out). And at this show, for example, there was nowhere to place or rest a microphone. I was just sitting in a plain old seat in the back of the venue.
A quick parting thought: you're attributing your complaints about the audio quality entirely to my camera. But I've heard lots of people complain about the sound quality at this venue (including at this show). This venue is usually only used for chamber music concerts and lectures. It doesn't have an optimal setup. And I've found that my camera records pretty faithful audio (certainly much better than most cell phone recordings I've heard). You definitely are more of an audiophile than me, so I'll share the camera specs in case you're curious: "XAVC S:LPCM 2ch, AVCHD: Dolby Digital (AC-3) 2ch (Dolby Digital Stereo Creator)"
Anyway, I appreciate you watching my video and taking the time to give me your ideas.
Warm regards,
Tim
The mixing could be better....but both legends...👍
Would we have all these old sad songs if it weren't for broken love affairs, and bad marriages.
Can't remember if we said goodbye
The bèst
Steve’s time line interjects by several interjections, with this song which had nothing to do with Steve’s history and a number Allison Moorer duetted after Doyle pretended he co-wrote with her on the first 6 of her cds… all of which were my storylines except mockingbird
These people have talents, still an unreal industry…
I never would have believed how elitist and snobby folksingers can be had I not tended bar in Old Town Chicago in the 70s. I was such a fan of the music but you couldn't even talk to them unless you where also a folksingers. I mean all except Steve and Emmylou of course..
hard hitting comment but i hear ya. worked bar in oly for 10 years. portland fancies would come up and play some acoustic shit. called it bluegrass. I was born in virginia, this shit wasn't bluegrass. and they were uptight, too. (*forgot to metion they didn't even do harmony singing) same story,, 30 years later. but there's always the gems. Take cheer in that friend
Where did you tend bar? At the Earl Of Oldtown? Bulls? Quiet Knight? Just wondering.
So nice to hear that Steve and Emmy Lou were exceptions.
Folk singers are just people with a talent. If they identify with it and put themselves above others you get a snob.
Yeah I hear you. I could not believe it when Steve sent me a private message on his UA-cam channel with his email address just days after his sons passing. I never did write but nonetheless it really says something about the man to respond to someone who loves his music and felt Justin’s passing as well.
By the way I’ve heard so many stories about having time for the ordinary Jo Blo as it were.
not watching ads, bye bye
Hi John, I don't monetize my channel. I would love for there to be no ads. I find them annoying too. But UA-cam gives me no choice. This is true for everyone. They force ads on every second or third video you watch. If you hate them enough, you can spring for the premium account and that turns off all the ads whenever you're on here. But there's no point getting mad at the music fans like me who are posting our concert videos. We have no way to stop the ads.
Boy Emmy sure doesn't have it anymore. Unfortunately. Steve is still going strong, but Emmy made it tough to listen to.
Is he saying good bye to his addiction or remembering a partner?? Maybe both?

tim great linkk you posted but lol BUT this is MY fav version
i hate getting old, i cant imagine getting constant pain and feeling your vocal chords tightening up withage
mine are doing that and it sucks
harder to hit low notes and not sing flat
The old grey mare ain’t what she used to be
ah but who is really
No one like Emma Lou, unique, beautiful voice, and soul. Live on Forever, your music touches my soul and heals some parts of me.
Oh no, Emmylou no. And you don't look so happy
She's singing about heartbreak and emotional neglect. Do you expect her to sing it with a big smile on her face?
My goodness..emmy looks like Pelosi?
what great singers, but Earl is no Meryl Travis when it comes to guitar picking. Yet I suspect his guitar collection rivaled Travis' and a hundred of other pickers combined each who can pick at least half as good as Travis. But wealthy money bags who can't pick a tune buy up the decent guitars and drive prices so high to make it hard for even millionaires to afford. The millions earl has apparently earned from his singing could have also as easily carried him much futher into a Zeppelin or CSNY level superstardom if he had ever seen the relevancy of having decent guitarists as backup like Robert Plant had. Anyway, he made enough dough probably to buy a very handsome rotating guitar collection, and with the help of 10,000 other wealthy guitar novices who cant play, scoured up all the once affordable stradivarious of guitars making it to where many great guitar players have to buy China junk. Alls I can say is it would have been nice for singers like him, before famous, would have had to pay $50k for a decent mic to sing thru when they started out.
Meryl Streep. MERLE TRAVIS.
You seem to be carrying a lot of baggage. You can put it down now.
@@willmercury If this person had hear Steve play live with his touring band, he would have had the pleasure of hearing incredible guitar players, and other musicians.
I will never for get a concert of his in Victoria, Canada,, amazing show.
His guitarist Bucky Baxter, who went on to play with Bob Dylan. Sweet slide guitar.
Inexpensive guitars are totally at a professional level these days. Not like the shit I learned on back in 1979, when I could have bought a 1950’s strat for $1500 but thought that was insane. No one likes collectors driving prices into the stratosphere but to say that therefore starting players don’t have a chance to get good on good instruments is total ballocks. There are a million fabulous starter instruments out there. And btw that guitar Steve is playing is recently built.
Sharing the lie with emmylou
