Very good analysis. This is exactly how I felt while playing Amnesia: The Bunker. It was terrifying for the first 2 hours of gameplay, but eventually it became a chore to have to constantly fuel the generator to the point where if I encountered the monster, I would just let him kill me because it would take too much time to evade and make him flee. However, Amnesia: The Bunker does certainly live up to its expectations on harder difficulties where it becomes impossible to constantly have the generator on, and you're forced to have to evade the monster in the darkness.
you put your thoughts together really cohesively. awesome editing and analysis... it really gets me thinking. i think you can definitely see this phenomenon everywhere once you're looking. youtubers like astralspiff will just tear apart horror games and dig into their mechanics as quickly as possible
Wow! This is genuinely a really good, thought-provoking video that I completely agree with. I am really interested that I'd never made the connection before either, it seems so blatant. Great points all around, the only part I even minorly disagree with is the freddy power outage sequence, It could be scary (and was, at the time) because it played on a fear of losing progress (which can be used effectively in very small doses) and the hope of getting lucky and having a long song, making the player on the edge of their seat or at least waiting with bated breath. Even so, I agree with your view on it. Great video and I'm now going to go play Who's Lila for the first time. Liked and subscribed lmao, good luck.
My favourite horror experience was exploring the deep dark in Minecraft hardcore with no knowledge on how the deep dark works. The genious in the warden spawn mechanics is that you can avoid ever summoning it, which stops you from learning how it works and just exactly how dangerous it actually is, that way it stays scary longer. The random and sometimes unfair cave generation helps this as well.
All this told me is that the perfect horror game isn't going to be a horror game, it's going to be a normal game with a horror slice. (think subnautica or the blood ocean in that pirate game)
i think horror games natrually become less scary after some time. because not knowing what is out to get you is often times the scariest thing and why jumpscares can often make games less scary. but that aside darkwood. its very skill based but there is always the chance of you doing something wrong and it costing you your life like challenging an enemy that turns out to be much tougher than you or having too little ammunition.
Not gonna lie I'm not a big fan of this video, not only is he negative throughout the whole thing , the whole video boils down to, "horror games can't be scary or fun and there's nothing that can be done. Some games have come close but I'm not going to tell you what they are or what they do".
??? My point wasn't that "horror games can't be scary or fun", it's that they can't do both perfectly. As i said in the video, some games that I think have come close are DDLC, Who's Lila, Lethal Company, etc. Horror is one of my favorite game genres.
5:09 the silent hill franchise standing arms crossed in the corner watching him say this
i will not ignore the fact that you named your character Jerma. in fact i am judging you harshly for it.
anyway great video!! definitely hope it blows up. editing goes hard and you explained things clearly and concisely :]
