Advancing with Watercolor: Working with Light "After the Show"

- This is a video done as a part of a series on Coffee Culture . I focus on Interiors, specifically Cafes and Coffee Shops. The locations are mentioned by name so that you can visit them and perhaps make some sketches. Often I take my iPad out when I am sitting in the Cafe and make a few sketches. I usually include these sketches and any photographic reference I use in the paintings. In this painting I give careful thought to the composition, placement of shadows, figures, and the other things you see at this coffee shop. This shop called Explorateur . A favorite place for students and theater goers. The subject in this work is the reliving of a theatrical performance at the coffee shop. Of particular interest to the watercolor artist may the build up of the background relying on drybrush and broken edges. As well as highlights brought back through a use of white. I compose using the figures from my head - in fact very often they look like me (waiter) ha ha. I try to put them into poses that evoke the Cafe Culture .....

Interesting tip about the muscle / brush. I'd wondered why people held them that way. Great stuff as always Gary, thanks!

Just lov your work. Seems so easy. But so far I have not attempted to imitate..
Because you have your own thinking going on...But, I should try.
very nice
I wish reference photos were available for purchase. Wonderful teaching. I personally like your cafe series more than any other subject.
Lisa - this painting was done from a sketch - sorry I seldom use photos for the cafe scenes
Wish I could paint like that
Thanks, Gary. Another wonderful tutorial. This may seem a silly question but just to get an idea of scale, were you working on A3 size paper for this sort of study? Regards, Gina
what paper are you using, I've only used paper with no pattern.
Монстры, это монстры. Мрачно
