The song is about how we judge people based on how they died. Someone overdoses and we say 'well they did it to themselves and they deserved it'. But, that person was also someone's child and will always be an angel to them.
System of a Down’s Genre is System of a Down. No band sounds like them, they captured something no other band has been able to imo.
The closest weirdness I think is Disturbed
Exactly. There's SO many bands that CAN NOT be labeled and put into a genre. You can't say system is in a genre. Rage isn't in a genre. They are also stand alone. Chili peppers.... where are they ? In the chili peppers genre where they belong. I thought we were taught not to label.
They are nu-metal
@@toddrotton218rage is nu-metal. RHCP are P-Funk alt
@@reggaelion86 and you would be in the dumbass genre
From what I understand the song is about how people can be seen differently and even judged depending on how they die. The song was originally called suicide but the label made them change the name so they called it chop suey because they were forced to chop it up. Honestly though I only understood the meaning years after I first heard it, they are DEEP. Nice vid dude thanks for uploading!
Thank you for the insight and for watching!
It was uploaded 14 years ago, but the song is older. It's from 2001. It's difficult to categorize their genre. They are often labelled alternative metal, they are on the more experimental side of things, playing around with different styles. System of a downs music contains elements from Nu Metal, Thrash Metal, Speed Metal, alternative rock, punk, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and even folklore. There are a lot of eastern european and middle eastern influences. They are my favorite band since highschool, and I'm 41 years old now. Still love them. If you want to try another one, try System of a down - Toxicity. "He got a good ass voice". True, he is considered to be one of the most iconic singers in rock music. He has a crazy range and voice control. And before you wonder, yes he also can rap quite good, he rapped on a track with the Wu Tang Clan. His timing and flow is perfect. His name is Serj Tankian. He's also a solo artist, and known for a lot collaborations with artists from various genres. He also did a track with TecNine "Straight out the gate". But he's not rapping in this one. "if all rock songs sound like this...." Nah, definately not. System of a down are their own genre, and very unique. YOu listen to System of a down, because they don't sound generic or like all the other bands. ^^
Thank you for the breakdown man! I’ll definitely listen and react to Toxicity!
Just to give you some important additional info: All the band members are from armenian descent, but growing up in an armenian community in glendale california. It's their armenian heritage that adds eastern european and middle eastern elements to their music. Their topics are often political, adressing a lot of social issues. But despite these more serious topics, they have also some hilarious funny songs going on. They were very big during the late 90ies/early 2000s. They won grammies, MTV awards and had multiple no 1 albums in the US and the whole world. They had their breakthrough when they met their producer Rick Rubin, who saw them playing in the iconic "viper room". A club in West Hollywood, once owned by Johnny Depp. @@NatReacts_
Need to do BYOB AND SUGAR
And chop sauy it's original name that the lable didn't let them use was suicide!
I’ll do it💯
This song is about how people only remember how you died, not how you lived. If you died for overdose, people only remember that, not who you was. Like a self-righteous suicide.
Yez, opera level vocals and deep ass lyrics. Total package of touch and toughness
💯💯
EFFIN EH!!!!!!!
the song is about sucide. the original name was called sucide but dou the studio term at the time they could not name the song sucide. so they change to chop suey
To be more precise, they literally chopped the word suicide, so they chop sui-cide-> Chop Sui -> Chop Suey.
And we can also see Serj eating a bucket of chop suey with a pretty bad face to show their disapproval for this renaming.
The joy of music. Discovering something you like that is new to you.
It's the internal struggle and hell of suicide, the pain, the anguish, the fight.. listen to the soul of the song.
Thank you for the insight!
The song was originally called suicide but the record label didnt want it released with that name. So, the band, with a play on words, "chopped' the word suicide to sui... Hence chopped suey. It was released right before the tragedy of 9/11. Considering the sensitive nature of the song,.it.was removed from radio airplay i believe for about 6 months after that tragic day. As for the meaning of the song, i pulled this from a website: the song was intended to make a comment on the ways that people die. Malakian said that people judge others for how they pass, especially if due to any drug-related issues.
“The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass,” said Malakian. “Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line Angels deserve to die.”
Thank you for the insight🤝🏽
there is something about SOAD music that so addicting...
The album was dropped in 2001 !!!! Crazy right, you need to listen to BYOB
Dang that’s crazy! I’ll do that one next🤝🏽
I discovered SOAD in 2002 when I was 12..they are still my favorite band and I've seen them in concert 3 times.
The early 2000s were the best 👍
I absolutely adore watching people discover SOAD!
Their amazing💯
Love this band! Pure awesomeness!!
💯🔥
It’s a song about suicide… like these lyrics “Angels deserve to die” and “Father into your arms I commend my spirit”
This is what the Producer says about the "Father into your arms" line : ""And we're sitting in the library in my old house and he said 'I don't have words for this' and we were finishing and it's like, OK. 'Any ideas?'; he didn't have any ideas. So I said, 'OK, pick a book off the wall.' He picked a book randomly off the wall, I said, 'open it to any page [and] tell me the first phrase you see", that was the line we saw. Not sure if it's true, but it makes for a great story. ua-cam.com/video/1P__qjVB9Tc/v-deo.html
As someone who has lost someone to suicide, this song is still so healing for me. Society has made the topics of self harm and suicide such a taboo that people have lost empathy for those affected by it. "I cry when angels deserve to die" and "why have you forsaken me" are a commentary on people with depression, psychosis, addiction etc being forgotten, thrown away, and treated like they deserve to die.
I don’t get how someone hasn’t heard this song! F*ck! 😂
Also, go listen to Crocodile Chops by Lemon Demon. Same song sooo different. 😂
I don’t know how I didn’t either lol, I’ll listen to that next!
Ha ha, enjoy!! Might wanna check out BYOB also. Bring your own bombs!
I will for sure💪🏽
Love *System of a Down* Please more 😁 New Subscriber, thank you for the reaction and thank you for being open to all music, many don't know that Rock and metal do have meaning and messages in their songs especially System of a Down.
Thank you for tuning and showing love!
This song came out 23 years ago :0 Classic banger
Please also listen to Toxicity 🙏🏻
I’ll be reacting to it next🤝🏽
He says i hate a world where angels deserve to day😊😊😊😊😊
Hahaha...I had the same reaction when I first heard. Blew me away.
This came out longer the 14 yrs ago my guy
“I cry when Angels deserve to die”
Great music diring this time
You need to checkout Rage against the machine rock/rap that rap fans all says dudesspitting lyrics. Try killing in the name, down rodeo, bulls on parade.
Definitely will do!
For more fun, do a back to back
Korn-Blind studio then Korn Bliind woodstock 99
Also Korn-Freak on a leash
Will do!
It didn't came out 14 years ago. This video did.. Song is from 2001!!!!! Golden years for music bro!
He’s classically trained
I feel the song is about, based in the lyrics "I cry when angles deserve to die" "why have you forsaken me" is about how when good people are subjected to a hard life that they end up taking their lives as a means to escape the torment of the mind and /or of life's situations and how its sad and unfair the that such good people feel so trapped and have maybe even prayed for life to get better to in the end take their life
Dig more about this kind of genre...start from the 80's..
This was put on UA-cam 14 years ago. Was made like 20 years ago
Lol. If you heard the word viral when this came out you were at the hospital
He’s speaking of how the government tends to send the lesser into war. The angels are the soldiers who are innocent (angels) who go to fight the wars they didn’t start. Selfless act of “self righteous suicide”
Nope. That's a different song. B.Y.O.B. This is about how society has no empathy for anyone who may die of an overdose or something they caused on their own. "I cry when angels deserve to die" means he has compassion for those who he still considers to be angels and struggled and died when others believe they deserved their death.
welcome to the system family brother! :)
I think everyone remembers where they were the first time they heard Chop Suey
I already see many comments giving some insight into the meaning of the song, if you want an in-depth breakdown I can highly recommend the video "How Rick Rubin Shaped System Of A Down's Biggest Song" by the channel Beyond The Beat Podcast. If you can spare 7 minutes it is really worth a watch
Thank you I will definitely check it out
Definitely check out Rage against the machine. Rock and hip-hop.
You’ll need the lyrics though
The song itself was released in 2001, 14 years ago was just when they added it to UA-cam. Check out their other stuff. I think you'll enjoy it.
An audiotory punch in the brain 🧠😊😊😊😊
The Prodigy : Firestarter
Вступление Chop suey фундаментально
UA-cam began in 2005. Anything before was brought on afterward.
System of a Down began late 90s, got popular by early 2000s.
In fact, many of the rock tracks you're reacting to came before UA-cam. Back then, MTV actually played music videos on TV.
Well, in the 90s, it was on the main channel, then after getting filled with shows, they made an MTV2 for music, and eventually, it got filled with shows.
MTV may have started as music television. It's more like Mainstream Television. But i haven't watched it in maybe a decade. A friend on m8ne still watches it for a show featuring comedic fails. I dont remember the name.
My 14 year old loves this song
Came out in sept 2001
Nu Metal my friend would be the category…what a time to be around to witness bands like this emerge 🔥
chop suey, is suicide chopped in half because the label wouldn't let them call the song that.
The lead singer Sarge used to be an opera singer.
most SOAD songs are more about a vibe than a super-specific thing. this one, i think, is sort of a meditation on how the way people die affects how their lives are perceived by others, and an expression of frustration at the idea that anyone might have "deserved" their death (via overdose, for example).
Welcome to the rabbit hole system of a down.. 😂🎉
Check out their cover of Shame from Wu Tang Clan…🔥🔥🔥
SOAD is hard to put in an exact genre. They’re rock, metal, punk, spoken word … huge mix. One thing they’re not, cheesy pop music 😂
Sugar!!!
Songs 23 years old!
You need to check out TOOL if you haven’t already. Parabola, The Pot, Schism, and Sober are some of the best vocal performances I’ve ever heard in a rock song.
Serj is a trained opera songer. 5:42 this part really gets me the way he says my
Especially if you're interested in the meanings behind songs, you have to check out Slipknot if you haven’t already. As a starter list, try these:
-Psychosocial
-Duality
-The Devil In I (I have a fun nugget of trivia for you if you watch this one lol)
-Before I Forget
-Spit It Out (Live at Download 2009...keep an eye on the drummer)
That list should at least get you going...I promise you won't regret it lol.
Thank you!
@@NatReacts_ Ooh! Another thought - check out "Omega" by Stone Sour if you're in to meanings. I'd love to see a reaction to it, because as far as I can tell, nobody has ever reacted to it. There's no music - it's all spoken, but I'd recommend pulling up "lyrics" just in case - certain parts go kinda quick lol. I even used it as a monologue for an English project in high school! Lol. I'd just LOVE to see someone finally react to it. Corey Taylor is the vocalist for both Slipknot and Stone Sour, and "Omega" is primarily him. 🙃😊🤘
(For the record, don't feel bad if you have to look certain words up - Corey's vocabulary is so incredible that even I had to look up a number of words he used lol.)
I'm not a heavy metal fan personally but this song is the exception. The feels this song gives me and has given me from the day it came out is unmatched by any other song.
This song is all about how we view people on the way they die. How we judge them for how they either choose to die or how their lives are taken by actions they take. It is not literal when he says "when Angels deserve to die' - basically he is saying everyone is an Angel no matter how they die. Society forsakens people who have mental issues that lead to suicide. The Father forsakes those who choose suicide, when he should not - after all, this is the world He created. The song title is literal a Chop(ped) Suey(cide). Hope that helps. ❤
Thank you!
Tech 9 ft Serj Tankian- Straight out the Gates
They don't have a bad music....but there are THE LEGENDAY SONGS...that was one...go for BYOB and Toxicity next....since you're new to them.
Your reactions are great! If you like the rap/rock mix you'd love Falling In Reverse. Popular Monster is a great song to start with!
odd request, but if you haven't, try The RIver by AURORA, a personal favorite
So heres a funny story. Im 53 (yes my profile pic is 13 years old) I just discovered this band a couple years ago. I apparently live in a vacuum and under a rock. That being said they are one of the best bands Ive ever heard. Almost up there with Beasties lol. Cool reaction...subbed:)
Maybe someone already corrected you, but this did not come out 14 years ago, maye it was uploaded then. This came out slightly befrore 9/11 in 2001. Because of the theme of unaliving oneself, it was basically banned after the attacks! This predates UA-cam by many years.
1999, 24 years ago sir
By the time the 90s hit, the traditional genres of music started to change to the point that traditional genre labels didnt adequately describe the music.
In the 80s, the record stores had everything sectioned into Rock, Rap, Pop, Country, Blues, Soul, Classical, soundtracks. By the 90s, it seems every genre grew. Even though there was already music that didnt fit the traditional labels, Rock became, grunge, punk, metal, alt rock, and all those genres made their own different sounds. Metal alone has probably dozens of genre. They all mixed and experimented with other genres to the point that some bands have such a sound of their own, its probably just best described by naming the band.
What genre is System of a Down?
Ahhh, its pretty Rock and rollish, but is pretty heavy at times like metal....probably thrash or groove, but brings in some rap pop sound followed by some operatic vocals and instrumentals that have an eastern europeanish flair...90s rock?....or, just call it, SOD rock?
Thank you for the breakdown!
As you go through their catalog, you will get the picture...they are Armenian-American...and if you haven't, just google "the Armenian genocide" and you will get much of their music...the lead, Serj, often has that spiritual, "Muslim call to prayer" mid-east voice...but as I'm sure you know, the US has been messing around there since at least the 80's...just to prep you, they are highly political...
all SOAD songs sound like this. try BYOB
I’ll listen to that next!
The genre of chop suey by system of a down is nu metal
If I'm wrong somebody let me know... Who am I kidding. Everybody with an internet connection will let me know. But I think they were an Armenian metal band. But immigrated to America. A lot of their songs are Anti-fascism, and comment on the state of the U.S. as well as their home country. The band broke up after the members political beliefs started to cause discourse between them. Lead Singer Serj Tankian has put out multiple solo albums since. He has one of the most distinct styles of music in rock history.
Their parents were immigrants. They grew up in LA.
Please don't stop this song a lot. It's good on its own lol
Then just go watch the video. We want to hear his thoughts. It’s a reaction video.
Have the lyrics up when you watch it. It absolutely help with understanding the song better.
My bad as I was typing you turn on subtitles.
SOAD 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This technically falls into the Nu Metal genre including other bands like KoRn and Linkin Park.

This song is about suicide and the judgement on people that commit suicide….the original title was “Suicide” but the label didn’t like it so they changed it to Chop Suey

I did a video to that earlier, it’s a banger
Like any great art,... it's yours. The band's or my interpretation mean nothing. I, personally, think it's dope AF!

React to Tool; any/all songs. Your channel will grow quickly. I've seen it happen to dozens of channels.
Thank you and I definitely will!
Listen to System Of A Down - Spiders
Song about Suicide
Parts of the lyrics are the last words Jesus spoke before he died on the Cross, committing self-righteous Unaliving for our sins.
Father into your hands, I commend my Spirit
Why hast thou forsaken me?
Trust in my Self-Righteous Unaliving.
SOAD is a very politically oriented band. They are all Armenian & alot of their lyrics speak on the Armenian Genocide.
Armenians goes hard ahha ❤
For sure!
"Father into your hands, I commend my spirit" is the last thing Jesus said before he died on the cross.
Along with "My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?"
"Trust in my self-righteous suicide"
Is Serj singing the whole thing from the perspective of Jesus?
Sub 25!!
Thank you!
The are Armenian-mostly about Armenian genocide
