That's interesting about the fuel lines being single-use. Same thing on gas DFI engines. Have to toss the lines when you open the system since they deform to make the seal. On my GM they really have you crank the fittings down pretty good. Something like 25 ft-lbs.
The EPA not only removes the blends from fuel/diesel but they also regulate the engine oils too. The lubricity in motor oils has been leaned just the same which also increase engine parts wear.
I almost threw up when I dumped 3 gallons into my fuel tank two weeks ago. I had to start it for just about 5 seconds so I could put it in neutral and start it down hill to roll in front of my work shop. Well I dropped the full tank of fuel ( ouch $120 worth) and drained it. Washed it out with garden hose real good. The pickup pump and lines and fuel filter on the tank. Installed it and added 3 gal of power service and a gallon of Power service 911. Mixed with 5 gal of fresh fuel. Drove it for a while then added 5 more gallons. Drove it 230 miles then added a full tank. Kept adding Power Service 1 gal per full fuel tank. Drove it another 300 miles then changed both fuel filters. Cut them open and let them dry for a few days. Not one spec of crystal any where on any of either filter. I guess I lucked out. On a side note I did it twice before on my 2011 6.7. That was at 45k miles..Only a qt or so. Just drained the first filter every few miles then changed the filters out while adding lot's of power service for a while. Traded it in at 165k and still running smooth. No issues there. On a side note. Why didn't I just call Ford to come and tow it while it was just in the tank and I hadn't started it at all? Had too many important things to be done the next day and 1 week after and another 1 week after and another 1 week after. I went for it. At that point I didn't care what happed to the truck. Either it was going to run and do that all or frig it. I now have a locking gas cap that should help.
I don't own a powerstroke but do have a 2015 Sierra with the Duramax, and i hated where the def fill was at first under the hood. spending the little extra time has sure saved my bacon few times. Since i have been watching this channel i have been using archoil both in the oil and fuel.
I have a 21 L5P Duramax and use Archoil in the fuel. I swear it does fewer regenerations and idles smoother. I also use the fuel system cleaner at every oil change.
I usually just pump the fuel out with an electric pump, change fuel filters, and fill it up with a bunch of diesel.... if they hadn't ran it. I have had pretty good luck without having to remove and clean the tank. And its like 5 grand in just PARTS for that fuel system/pump replacement package. Great video though! I will tell my customers not to turn that key on! I always learn something from Bill.
Wow, I am 64 and I remember when the GM and VW/Rabbit diesels came out and customers went to full serv. stations, I have seen more than 1 vehicle get gasoline, seemed like a drain was the most common fix THEN
I did this once at 40,000 miles on my Ram. Long story short I’d put about 3/4 to 1 gallon in the diesel tank. The truck was at idle when I did it and it immediately started to run rough and died. At the time having it towed wasn’t an option and I had a load to deliver. I shook the truck to help get the def off the bottom of the tank and got the truck started again. It ran a little rough when I first took off but then it cleared up and I drove the dog out of it. I had to stop now and then to drain the water separators but that was it. The diesel tank was full when this happened, after running that tank out I changed the fuel filters and never had a problem. 300,000 miles now and she still runs strong. I wouldn’t recommend anyone do what I did because it can blow the injector tips off, guess I got lucky! Lol
If I had only known back in 2012 that I would need an F350 again, I never would have sold my 99 Dually 7.3. Damn things cost more with more miles and rust than what I sold mine for back then!
The common rail system is a masterpiece. Its amazing how far diesels have come in the last 30 years. Those Bosch engineers are some real wizards. 35,000 psi these systems are poping out these days. Not surprising its sensitive to what you put in the tank.
Pretty corrosive situation you have there. Seen this alot in early 2011 when the 6.7 came out before I quit ford and opened my own shop. I love these customers very much.
Question the customer had a box of def only poured a 1/8 of a gallon in tank if that he quickly caught himself lol systems water light 1292 is that enough to mess it up customer put 3 qrts trans fluid in when it happened and topped off diesel?
I've got one thats even more expensive and way more scary. There has been several biz jets that people have added DEF fluid into the jets fuel system instead of a product called prist. Prist is used in jets to prevent the jet fuel from jelling when it gets cold. When they added DEF into the jets fuel it did the same thing to the jet engines. The def turned to crystals in the fuel system and shut down the engines. Yes, the planes were in the air but by luck were able to land on a runway without further damage. The engines were ruined and required a complete rebuild which is in the millions. The jets were old enough that the expense was so excessive that the jets were totaled. Millions of dollars of damage. Two of the jets that I remember were for air ambulance service so they had some pretty extensive airframe modifications for that mission, which the insurance company didn't want to cover. Last I heard there was a lawsuit ongoing. 5k for a truck repair is nickel-dime compared to that.
Is it just as bad putting Diesel in the DEF tank? I knew from my first experience with DEF dribbling just a little on the tank that that stuff wasn't going to treat a fuel system well. IIRC it's a water solution right?
What about disconnecting the batteries if the driver doesn't want to crawl under the truck or is unsure of how to pull the plug without screwing up the wiring???
I'd imagine getting DEF at the pump makes this more likely. I get it in the big 2.5g jugs with the bendy straw funnel. Also makes it obvious to me why not all DEF tanks fill from the fuel filler area. Seems nice to have them in the same area for convenience, but unless you're just the type to always pay attention, it can be deadly...
Someone should make a printable year by year chart of which fuse and or relay to pull to disable the fuel pump to print out and keep in the glove box in case you do the DEF unthinkable....
Glad I didn't buy the diesel! Got a 6.2 gas f250 and besides the mpg it's awesome! Not as much power as the diesel but it works for me for the few times a year I pull a car trailer. Probably cheaper in the long run and much much easier to work on.
Many folks buy diesel just to have it and gain much of nothing unless they haul loads often. Gas is way better in value unless you can justify the extra costs a diesel.
Ford did this to my dads 6.7. They stated the def tank was filled on the receipt but the truck left with low amount of def fluid. The truck went into limp mode. Ford tried saying that it was bad fuel and refused to flip the bill.
Man alive all this just because the genius Ford engineers put the DEF fill right next to the fuel fill. This is just another reason why the new 7.3 Godzilla gasser is going to be so successful. That motor will do everything diesels were doing not too long ago…but without the HUGE upfront costs + the outrageous maintenance and repair bills. It's a shame that the EPA has killed the simplicity of diesels.
At least the system is easier to get to I have a dmax 2016 and it is a 16000.00 fuel system replaced due to location. I had a 6.0 2007 and I miss the simplicity of it even simpler my 95 7.3
If you got a bad batch of fuel you can claim insurance. But you putting DEF in there I don't believe they would cover it, you would have to say you got contaminated fuel. But even then when they ran the fuel test I'm sure the insurance company would be asking questions
I've always thought that putting the fuel and def fillers right next to each other was a dumbass move on Ford's part. Sure it's convenient, but it makes it waaaaay more probable when you loan your truck to your brother in law that's never driven a diesel in his life to pick up a refrigerator or something, that he ends up dumping a box of def in the fuel tank.

Couldn't imagine paying $60k for a truck, and doing this to it. Better yet, it does it and you didn't add def to the tank. I've seen to many problems with these new trucks. Death wobble, exhaust manifold bolts breaking, def heaters, scr, fit and finish, cp4 failures, turbo failures, and on and on and on. Planned obsolescence right out the gate. Yeah I’m watching this $10k later ! Dodge doesn’t have a gas cap only a flapper why the hell don’t they make the nozzles in a way that they won’t fit into the wrong tank 🙄 but then the def is bull 💩 in the first place !
Diesel is becoming Dodo. Just have to question. Worth it in general? Nope. Too much rubbish to stay diesel loyal. Nah, Get a gas, wear it out and replace it for 1/5 cost. Diesel is a dumb investment. Negative payback in all situations. Very serious impressive design but very serious economical design flaws. However, the diesel will always have a testosterone following. The economy disappeared when regen came about. IMO, dump the diesel. Sorry fellas, I was a fan of them but lost my moxa for the thing.
I dove diesel cars from 1977 to 2018. I have been offered to buy a very good shape low mileage VW Jetta Diesel, it's a standard and it has this DEF thing, I passed I drove Jettas for decades- I just will not deal with the DEF and the fact that Diesel VW's are no longer being brought in to the country and well parts will be an issue. As much as I liked diesel, unless you have some specific needs ie towing and a lot of driving they are just not worth the trouble and expense these days. Diesel Fuel is crap these days thanks to the EPA nonsense. It's being regulated off the road, at least in personal transport applications.
24 valves are pretty good but 12 valves especially non intercooled are powerless. The main idea during those years was diesel was for efficiency as trucks would get 12mpg or less especially those Ford 460 or GM 454.
Wow! This is another example that makes me glad I have a 1999 7.3L.

Yeah I’m watching this $10k later ! Dodge doesn’t have a gas cap only a flapper why the hell don’t they make the nozzles in a way that they won’t fit into the wrong tank 🙄 but then the def is bull 💩 in the first place !
Unless ur snap on guy is Troy Reeves then he doesn’t show up to even get paid let alone fixing broken crap on tools
looks like the 6.7 is as big a pos as the 6.4
The basic engine is not bad but the CP4.2 fuel pump is reason alone to run from this truck.
So the moral of the story is don't put piss in your tank got it
Diesel is becoming Dodo.
Older diesels are where it's at
I dove diesel cars from 1977 to 2018.
I miss my 7.3 trucks.. but NEVER will I own one of these PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE trucks. For now, my trouble free 13 year old 5.7 Tundra will do.
Yep from another tundra owner.
7.3’s and 12v’s are over rated and over priced. I’d rather deal with one of these trucks than one of those old, leaky, and powerless dinosaurs.
PSD Leach “powerless” LOL
My 7.3 isnt leaky at all. Keep it well maintained and there are no problems.
24 valves are pretty good but 12 valves especially non intercooled are powerless. The main idea during those years was diesel was for efficiency as trucks would get 12mpg or less especially those Ford 460 or GM 454.
And other funny jokes you can tell yourself
No thanks.
That’s exactly why I deleted my 6.7 a long time ago def is garbage 🚮
How funny what truck needs five thousand pounds of pressure to start
Stressy Porkrind The newer diesel engines with direct injection, any brand.
F too shitty
All modern diesel pickups do. They are all essentially the same injection system made by Bosch.
All of the new ones
English please.....
Geez, these fukers are gonna be worse than a 6.0.
