I recently had this happen on my 2001 7.3 Excursion with 382k miles. Towing a camper and began to notice excessive black smoke when under load. Eventually it began smoking white at idle. Stopped halfway through the trip and by some miracle an O’Reilly Auto Parts store a half mile down the road happened to be open on Labor Day and had all eight injectors. Fortunately I had a mechanic buddy and plenty of tools with me and we managed to replace all eight injectors and get back on the road in four hours. Quite the adventure.

Bill, A suggestion for showcasing your damaged parts...make them as artwork! You can mount them to a board and hang them on the office wall for a conversation piece. County won't even know your keeping old parts around!

    Thanks again guys, good stuff.
Don't forget about the "Blue spring update" also on the filter module. OEM update. Also, at 170k while open like that, perfect time for new lifters and the updated pushrods also, along with all the other updates while there. You have done excellent videos about that in the past as well. God bless you guys.

I will put my .02 cents in, had an excursion 6.0, kept cracking the #6 or #8 injectors as mentioned in this video, pulled the pressure regulator spring, found it to be a red short one, installed a blue spring have not had any problems since, 100,000 miles on it since that was done.

7.3 engines were notorious for this. Usually it's caused by water. IH had this problem. The fix was install a fuel water separator. However if it's not maintained it still happens.

An aftermarket fuel pressure gauge is a good idea. Has helped me a couple times In the 7.3 knowing there's an issue with something before its too late

If you don’t want to spend $500 to replace the whole HFCM you can buy just the pump and replace the cover with the later model one that deletes the fuel heater that causes corrosion buildup. Just be sure to clean out the housing really good.

Had a similar issue with the cloud of white smoke, it was a failed copper o-ring. Replaced them with 7.3 and probably over 100K since that failure.

HFCM = Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module
Pure Power Technologies had some materials issues on the G2 injector tips. Fuel cooling the injector tips on the G2 injectors wasn't as big of a deal, compared to the common rail injectors while engine braking. It is hard to say if the injectors were remans that had prior damage or not.
It isn't easy to tell someone to spend $2k in parts for new PPT injectors. There were spool valve to CVB issues for many years due to an incorrect location of a compressed air filter AFTER the pressure regulator when air gauging the fit. New injectors were leaving PPT at "worn to" clearances, causing excessive white smoke on cold driveaway and retarded timing. It was bad. Bankruptcy was in the cards, if there was a recall. That truth had to be held back.

You know what I like- Bill and Mike think things through and come up with a hyphathosis about what is causing problems and break downs, and then they come up with preventative tips and solutions. here's what the local ford dealer does: they test everything and then tell you that after calling Fords hot line, that because you have 6 percent diesel fuel in your engine oil, that they have no parameters for the amount of fuel that is supposed to be in the engine oil and they act like everything is ok. And then they don't know what to do. And then they charge you for finding out nothing because you warranty doesn't cover non repair jobs, not even changing fuel contaminated oil which costs $150.00 to do yourself. God I wish I still had my 1997 7.3. Just venting, sorry....

Brittle fracture from temp cool and heatup . Cooldown rate is more limiting than heatup so the stress of cooling from the fuel and the heat of combustion.
Brittle Fracture cooldown stress vs heatup from combustion.
So YOU ARE EXACTLY CORRECT ON TIP CRACK FAILURE CAUSE.

Maybe I am anal I have an 05 F350 6.0 Tow Boss. I purchased in 2015 the previous owner had replaced the engine because the number 8 cylinder was washed out with fuel. So I am hoping it holds up for me. But I added a fuel pressure gauge I then did blue spring upgrade. I also constantly watch the egt the ect and the eot. And 90 percent of the time I keep the boost at or under 20 psi on the boost. I am always pulling a 30` gooseneck trailer. I will back off when climbing a hill. Briefly at times I will go wide open throttle to exercise the turbo. I very seldom run over 1100 on the egt I find that if I back off the throttle when pulling a hill that keeps my temperatures good.

    03" 6.0. I run it all stock.
I did blue spring upgrade and changed my fuel pump out at 1700,000 miles finally. Easy to do. I had all the injectors replaced at 160,000 miles and wanted the fuel system to be in spec. Suckers cost bank. I would think replacing the fuel pump before 200,000 miles would be good insurance. Made common seance to me.
I did just replace number five injector at 190,000 miles now. The coil stopped working. It only had 30,000 miles on it and was a Ford reman. It skipped at startup, puked a black puff and I shut it off. Had it towed. Didn't run it. I did replace it with another ford reman injector. Wish they made all new ones. But I almost exclusively use my truck for medium to heavy towing. So higher heating for longer times is just a failure factor. But It tows like I want and has been a very dependable worker for me. Just towed a 16k trailer with it and it's all good with a $300.00 Ford Injector replace.
So far from factory to 190,000 miles it has 9 injectors to it's cylinders. I suppose a common rail injector can go about 200,000 miles as well. I should have just kept running the originals until they failed. It ran great but started to stiction and needed Archoil to stay happy. I just use a little Archiol every change now after replacing them. Maybe stay ahead of an early wear fail in the spools.

Currently having a hard time finding coolant test strips that work for my ‘97 7.3. Are there any alternatives to adding the VC-8 and testing? I’ve been looking into Evan’s coolant but I’m unsure if that’s the answer. Any thoughts?

Don’t use Evans waterless coolant! Ever! Ford should have the SCA. I know Napa sells SCA. You can check the conductivity of the coolant, (look for videos). The strips I can find the ph and the coolant test strips on the amazon.

May be giving you a call. I work on military base as Diesel Tech and have this 2013 F-350 6.7. It sat for almost 2 years previous tech diagnose it said high pressure pump. I wanted to mess with it. Previous tech said might of ran out fuel. I cycle key 6 times to prime it. It started after 2 time. I drove it low fuel pressure display on dash. I change fuel filters and test drove it and it ran fine. But getting this noise coming from secondary fuel filter. I have no check engine light on. Truck running fine but just wondering about noise coming up by secondary fuel filter. Any help or might be better call you

    • @Tempsho
      @Tempsho 2 роки тому

I wouldn’t mix them together, but if you run one type through one tank, than a different type in another tank, it’s not going to hurt anything. There are better additives than others out there, but running anything is better than nothing at all.
