Thanks for the quick reply. My son and I went to Sam's Club this weekend and got a new 70 inch TV. Yay. Get to go home and enjoy that. Nope! So I get in the van (114 k on it and has up til now ran really great) start the engine and back out, put it in drive and she just sits there idling. I'm at first stumped. I put her in drive and push the accelerator. Nothing. No increase in throttle. So I play around a little, turn it off, back in gear and so on . Nothing. She would actually move at about 10 mph but no more. So I pulled into a gas station and shut her off. About 10minutes later I start her and she gets us home about 21 miles away. When I got home is when I put the scanner on it came back with 0638 code. I checked multiple sites and pretty much all of them said change the Throttle Body sensor but I can't find the sensor without the entire Throttle Body so I ordered it and the intake hose cause it was cracked bad. A video from years ago showed a guy change just the sensor which he got for $7.00 but I guess they're no longer available, hence having to buy the whole thing for $140ish. Not to bad though cause Auto Zone wanted over $200 and a core exchange. I got the Throttle Body and Intake hose from Amazon for like $172 altogether. I will try just the hose first because I have it. I guess the Body will probably come tomorrow. I'll keep you informed.
I had the same problem and it was found to be a faulty throttle body sensor. This is a potentiometer which produces a voltage depending where the position of the throttle is suppose to be. How it works is the throttle pedal inside the cabin also is a potentiometer which produces a voltage depending how hard you much the peddle. The computer compares both voltages and if the voltage across the foot peddle is more than the one in the throttle body, it sends a signal to a small electric stepper motor to wind up the throttle until the sensor shows the same voltage... Its looking for a difference equal to Zero .... That is A-B=0 ... Now if the sensor is dodgy and its sending erroneous signals, the computer shuts down the vehicle to a safe idle speed..... This prevents the vehicle from going into an uncontrollable excursion of very high speed which you cannot stop. So its a safety feature really. To fix it, you buy the throttle body sensor only and replace it. Don't let these mechanics talk you into buying a whole new throttle body! Its ridiculous and expensive. They are available from a Hyundai dealer.. The part number is exactly the same.
Can you change the oil filter out without draining the oil? I just had an oil change recently but I want to swap out the filter they installed at the shop with a high quality K&N filter like in this video or a OEM Hyundai/Kia filter
Really enjoy your videos... evan the easy things to fix.. I always learn something and its nice to know that others have just as much trouble as i do! LOL..your thoughts are very honest and thats better then those videos that others say.. Oh its easy to take off or fix.. and then get themselves in trouble becuase they tackled a job that was too complicated for them. Thanks again.
I have 3.8 Kia Amanti 2008 is it the same filter? And what type of oil should i use for Florida weather please And how many Liter it takes 3.8 engine ,,,
Is that a 4” or 5” cartridge? The 5” will fit, but my local dealership and AutoZone gave me the 4” cartridge part number. My van was manufactured February 2008. Thank you for the video, well done.
There's another video where he uses the 4" cartridge: ua-cam.com/video/oJ-arUNrvgs/v-deo.html I'm trying to figure out which one to order, too! Might just get both...
And while here, I stuck my finger inside the Throttle Body throat and it has a lot of black residue. I'm thinking starting the engine and spraying some choke cleaner in there. I have a new Body coming so what's the worst that could happen? Oh and also, I am retired USAF and I used to manage the Joint Oil Analysis Labs for the military tri-service (Army, Navy and Air Force) Getting your oil analyzed is a great thing to do! A little expensive in the civilian world but still a good thing to do.
Great video! I have 2007 Hyundai entourage an I’m having a little problem. The oil icon seems to be appearing on my cluster panel, but only when the van is idling. Any thoughts?
You actually can't fill it with oil. If you look inside there you'll see these big orifices for the oil to flow. If you were to pour oil in there it would just pour down into that orifice and disappear.
@@themarginalmechanic5928 - I'd go with full synthetic as well. Engineering Explained has a vid or two about. BTW, a single UOA (oil analysis) is of limited utility. Viscosity, flash point, and glycol can give you useful info, but wear metals by themselves are only a snapshot; a test at the next change can establish a trend. Ideally testing should have started after break-in to establish your baseline.
Just for information. My 2008 Kia Sedona, I always used original kia oil filters. I finally decided to go with an extended life stp oil filter. It was fine for about 700 miles and then started multiple misfire,.It was nearing 100k so I decided to replace the plugs. I checked compression and found unusual and inconsistent reading on 2,4,6. I read the the timing chain may have jumped so I pulled the valve covers-all ok. I reassembled it and it ran terrible. I read on a forum about someone having an issue using non kia filters. I changed the oil and used a Kia filter and it ran great. It wasn't an entire waste because the VC Gaskets were starting to leak and it was almost due for it's 100k tune up. I will never use other than a Kia filter on it again. Just FYI
What an oil filter would have to do with an engine 'mis-firing' etc... is beyond me? Similarly as one of a zillion examples, someone could say they bought new tires and now their power steering pump is grinding?? Makes no sense..
@@stevemarks4590 Believe me I understand. I was a mechanic for 36 years. I had misfire codes on cylinders 5 and 6 and I had no compression on 5 and low on 4 and 40 lbs on 6. It must have been something with the Variable Valve timing., Subsequent retests of compression brought 5 &6 up but not to specs. 1,2,and 3 we're to specs. I saw that this engine had 2 timing chains and that 1 might have jumped so I pulled the valve covers and they were fine. I replaced the valve covers and plugs. I replaced the coil packs.. Put it all back together. It ran terrible. I changed the oil and filter (kia filter) and initially when it fired it was misfiring but then smoothed out and ran perfect. I changed that oil at 3200 miles and checked for metals in my drain pan, nothing. It has now been 5100 miles with no reoccurrence (knock on wood). Someone on a post had said that using a non kia filter can cause it. I believe it and will never use anything but a Kia filter again. Take it for what it is worth to you but keep it in mind.
@Dodger Blue, I have rebuilt many engines over my 30 years as a mechanic and there is no way an oil filter will cause a loss of compression or any of the other things you claimed. I have had my Kia Sedona for 12 years now and I use nothing but Fram filters in it, not one problem has arisen from using a non-OEM filter, then again, I have this itch between my toes!!!
@@martinparr193 I can't say that it makes sense. The only potential culprit is the vvt. Never had a problem with using Kia filters. Went 700 miles with no problem with an STP filter then major issue. As I said I replaced the plugs, no change. Changed the Valve cover gaskets and checked the timing chain -ok. But still multiple misfire. The only other thing that I did was change the oil and use a Kia filter. My 38 years of being a mechanic has taught me cause and effect. Obviously someone else in a Forum had a similar issue. Thanks for the comment.
Folks think I'm nuts but I love snow. I can NOT handle heat anymore! Anyway I have a 2008 Sedona that the Engine Check and ESC lights came on Sunday and the van wouldn't go anywhere. It starts and runs but no acceleration. I ran the codes and got a 0638 for the Throttle Body sensor. I ordered both the Throttle Body and a new air intake hose (the old hose unbeknownst to me was badly cracked) Could the bad hose be my problem? And not the throttle body? I have the new, replacement hose and I am thinking about just putting it on, clear the codes and see what happens. Thoughts?
Scott L Thank you for quick response. Got an external leak on that side of engine. Lower intake? Going to clean everything off and see where it is originating from
Hey I have a quick question, my mom van is leaking oil from around this oil filter cap. What could be causing it? It looks like a chocolate fountain leaking out.
there is no way in hell I would put a 40 weight oil in that van. 5w 20 and you put 10w 40. You must of hated your van. if you wanted to thicken your oil... One court of 10w 30 would of done the trick. Even then I would never do it to a foreign vehicle. High mileage oil at 100,000 on. Personally I use high mileage oil from the day I buy my vehicle. But what do I know? I only work in the lab that does that little thing you want done.
See my video on the piston slap, that excessive play is consistent with 200k engines and as the tolerances increase a thicker oil is used to fill the void.
great video ...have same van as you.. soon as you opened that garage door i noticed we live in the same state thanks again

I have 2006 Kia Sedona Van should i be using full synthetic 5w-20 or just regular oil (5w-20)
I'd go just with regular oil
I'll just say I prefer synthetic due to its Superior flow at cold temperatures

What's the size of the oil filter wrench?

Will this little o-rings being bad cause an oil leak? 2008 Sedona

Scott L alright Scott I appreciate you responding back. Hopefully we can get it resolved
Great video, many thanks
Brave man oil change during snowstorm lol
My manual says the oil capacity is 5.5 Qts. What ever happened with the oil analysis?
they found snow... ;-P
Refers to snow as debris😅
THANKS!
That oil is too heavy It would use 5w-30.
keeping the oil ring and the costumer have to pay ...it comes with everything put everything there ,..bad man lol
