- Ohio State's visits to Penn State were always one of the biggest games on the college football calendar due to the Whiteout. Always a raucous atmosphere, these games were one of the most iconic scenes in college football.
But this year, that game will feature a visit from Minnesota and not the Buckeyes. So why is that?
Penn State head coach James Franklin explains.
I wish the Head Football Coach at Penn State was uninvolved with decisions on fan clothing and was more involved in why the offensive line looks so glaringly weak.

The most unnecessarily long answer
Why do we need to roll out the red carpet for Ohio state every year? It puts them on pedestal. They don’t need any more sprinkles. Play them at noon too. Make them fly in on a Friday night and wake up at 5-6am from sleeping in a foreign bed for a noon kickoff. Playing Ohio state at 7pm and a whiteout every year does not help Penn state at all in terms of wins.

I've just checked the U of Minn's football schedule for 2022. The Gophers have 3 games that they should win convincingly, & 3 games that will be challenges (these 3 games all with Big 10 opponents). There's probably a 50% chance that the Gophers will come in to Happy Valley with a 5-1 record, or better. The Gophers are far from being as formidable as the loathed Buckeyes, but with a tested QB, a sound offensive line, & a very solid running back they will, nonetheless, provide the Local Heroes with an opponent worth the value of the ticket.
And don't forget the upset they caused us a few years back. They usually do play us close, too.

As a buckeye myself we love playing you guys. It’s one that you have to pay attention to every minute and your knee is bouncing the whole time because Penn State is always a threat regardless of their record. But don’t sleep on Minnesota. You guys better go into that game with the same intensity you play us at because they find ways to be competitive every year.
AND. The Victory Bell Is On The Line. Which is in our possession which I can't wait for us to battle for again.
Imagine paying a man millions to be the coach of your football program and he has a 2-13 record against top ten teams. Am I the only one that sees an issue with this?
If we start struggling against Ohio, I'm going to yell, "GET READY FOR 10 MORE YEARS OF THIS!" Franklin is the most overrated coach in college football right now. He's good at everything except clock management and playcalling. In other words, the 2 most important things a coach has to do

Penn State not scheduling Ohio State for the white out is a huge mistake. Penn State fans are awesome for that game. PSU always makes that game a huge event. Franklin just tried to explain why the game is against Minnesota and he lost me at the deer hunters clothing comment 😂

Last year instead of Michigan, the Whiteout was against Auburn. What they did for the Michigan game, was have everyone wear white except for the fans sitting at midfield. (Thus forming the PSU Helmet) Same will happen here.
The last time Penn State met Minnesota they were both 8-0. The game had excellent TV ratings. Ohio State will do fine playing Rutgers etc. on the BTN network.
Actually, FOX scheduled the Penn St.- Ohio St. Game on its noon broadcast.

As a PSU fan, I can tell you it’s cap that people put night game over opponent mattering… everybody know this was coming for months and prayed for it to be OSU
As a Gopher fan, I most enjoy watching my favorite team play Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska, because I have friends who are fans of those teams and they're in our neck of the woods. I've never considered Penn State a rival, and I don't honestly care about the trophy that was created... However, there have been entertaining games between these two schools, in both football and hockey, and I'm starting to enjoy the matchups more lately. It'll be fun hopefully watching my team play well and possibly win a famous Whiteout game! I love the B1G, we have a great conference full of amazing schools and wonderful people. Go Gophers!

@@MrBtc120 I'm old and can't run very fast, I'm not on the team... But the Gophers absolutely have a shot. Last game in happy valley, psu won by just 3. Last game between these teams, Minnesota won (I was there, it was lovely). We'll see!

They did. Trust me I go to Penn State and believe me, many of my friends myself included wanted it to be Ohio State. But theres gotta be flexibility. Not to mention Minnesota is a very good team almost every year. They may not make the BIG10 Title Game but they always come close. Not to mention this is a grudge match 3 years in the making. (The last time those 2 teams met, they were both 8-0 and the Gophers beat us) That game is our revenge match.

The whiteout game creates the most difficult environment for visiting teams to play in. Communication is hindered and it gives your players on the field an emotional boost. Thus, giving your team it's biggest home field advantage of the year. So why in the HELL wouldn't you want to use it against the best team you're going to play against? Like it or not, to win a BIG championship you pretty much HAVE to beat OSU. They're the team to beat, not the Golden Gophers lol! I'm sorry but that just speaks to the confidence lvl of them playing against OSU because the reality is the White Out games always going to be a MASSIVE recruiting weekend. They're scared of losing to the Buckeyes on such a big recruiting night. It shows their hand without showing their hand. I PROMISE, OSU is going to be no less excited and ready coming to Happy Valley regardless if your fans are all wearing white shirts, blue shirts, or fuzzy rainbow colored flannels with orange hunting hats. Doesn't make a difference. Clench your cheeks and embrace yourselves. The Buckeyes nuts are coming regardless. 😅😆😂
what time is the game vs OSU? Like coach said, my understanding is that the TV powers wanted the prime time afternoon game between OHIO Sux University and Penn State, but everyone at Penn State wants to keep the tradition of the white out game being at night. i dont think it has much to do with your little theory, but makes for a cute story! Don’t get me wrong, I have a tremendous amount of respect for the program… but this was super not classy. “We’ll take em cuz the timing works out for us, unfortunately OSU wouldn’t be a night game / early in the year” with nothing about how it’ll be a good competitive game, 2019 rematch, underrated program, etc. That respect is part of what makes the B1G the greatest conference in all of sports, and it’s completely missing here.

The whiteout is Penn state's marquee game every year night time or not. Penn state is tired of losing their marquee game every year. Even though they're not choosing the hardest game or the easiest opponent, it looks like the white out will at least have the possibility of Penn state winding up with a W in the whiteout this year instead of the likelihood of getting beat at home in your "biggest" home game.
I mean we've been 4-1 in whiteouts since 2016, so no, we don't lose every year.

Plus im not a pennstate fan so i im not really talking bout your last 4 whiteouts just the ones vs OSU. I figured I just find it funny that for the last ten years Ohio State has been playing PennState in the white out on the even years. Maybe its only sneakily convenient that for some reason the osu game is gonna be a nooner. And yes teams play below their average there games have historically been close either way its gonna be a tough environment. I just want the marquee matchup to be a night game and the white out. Its probably the best game on that whole day.

I think 8-8 has been fortunate. The white out doesn't give you wins but it does give you a chance, I'd have to look but I'm pretty sure all of these games have been competitive
