Superb footage Mike. I was raised on a farm in Wales and in the late 1960’s early 1970’s, the were Barn Owls nesting in an old barn within 300 yards of the house. Those owls raised countless young over the years and they were welcomed by all the farmers in the area as they did a magnificent job controlling rats and mice. Their numbers declined sharply from the 1980’s on due to reduction in rough grassland and disappearance of old barns (many converted to houses). Their numbers on the farm I was raised are again increasing and a pair have again in residence at the old barn near the house. They are beautiful birds and you captured some magnificent still shots and video. Well done Mike. Alun
Arguably one of the best videos you've ever made Mike. I dont ususally leave comments but this one was screaming for it. Well done! PS. Your work is surely starting to make me want to visit UK just for bird photography session. Best regards and hello from Ireland!
Wow! I would love to visit Norfolk now! I remember seeing my first Barn Owl as a child sitting between my parents in an Austin A40 at night on our way to Aberdeen in full view of the high beam. Stunning birds.
Brilliant Mike, really great images and video of one of THE best birds! The whoopers in the background and then the slow motion video is testament to your skill and patience. If I had to choose I would say the last image of the owl and car was my favorite of that sequence. All the best, Andy.
Great footage. I was filming some barn owls from a hide at the local nature reserve a month or so ago. They came out from their nesting box at dusk just as the sun was setting and I managed to get some video footage of them in the distance before unfortunately the staff came in and ushered us all out for closing time.
Nice Mike… I love your honesty… we all see stunning photography, especially in manual focus but we all throw lots of time away also. But that’s why we love the challenge 👍👏
Stunning video and stills. This has been my favourite video of yours so far and that's saying something as they are all excellent! You've made me wish for light, warm summer evenings so I can go out after tea and look for my local barn owl - or any owl, come to that!
Hello, Mike These images are outstanding! Impressive how you control the MF shooting video and I´m really impressed by the car shots, what an mazing backgrounds they looks superb. I was triyng my OM-1 this summer shoothing sea gulls you know, they are not very fast flyers and I was shooting with an 45-175 Lumix lens and the C-AF was perfect, lots of images very sharp indeed. I´don´t wanna imagine how it will work with an 300mm F4 or the 100-400 native lenses. Beilliant work. best all from Spain, Remus
Wow fantastic shots! Well done on the video. The GH6 should be able to do 300fps and one of the free Davinci Resolves stabilizers might get rid of the radial movements in one of the closups.
Brilliant, Mike! That used to be one of my favourite birds long ago when I still lived in England (Sussex), but I've never seen one in broad daylight except once, flying under the trees in a woodland area.
Great video as ever. My wife and I are heading down to Norfolk in a couple of weeks so with a bit of luck and you advice we’re hoping for some good photos. Thanks
It's great to hear how you put a lot of time and effort into your photography. Despite all the gear great shots and video doesn't just happen. I got some shots of a barn owl at 7am at a nature reserve in West Yorkshire and was later told I'd been lucky to see them. It was only still hunting because it had been terrible wet weather the previous 36 hrs stopping it finding food.
Excellent video Mike 👍 don’t know how you managed to manually focus so well, respect. Funnily enough I went to Welney yesterday but only saw a shy Kestrel on the posts which flew off as soon as I slowed down in my white car lol, not the best colour. No Barn Owls to be seen unfortunately, but that’s wildlife photography for you. Still an enjoyable day though. Keep up the good work 👌
What you need is a Canon CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 lens, it sell for 70 000$ at BH photo in New York. Its a piece of art, thats for shure...and its only 6,6 kg for such incredible zoom span, and it have a built in 1,5 extender. Well, dreaming isnt too bad.
Yes if you are not a member. I did photograph them at the reserve, but day flying owls are widespread in Norfolk and I have done them in lots of places.
Excellent job with MF tracking, Mike. I wasn't aware neither the OM-1 nor the Panasonic can do AF tracking in video. (I'm using a Nikon Z9 which does, albeit only up to 120 fps). There really is no camera for MFT that does video AF?
They can all do AF tracking, but it is poor compared to stills mode. As far as I am aware no camera focuses as well in video mode as stills. Slow moving harriers okay, but fast flying birds not yet.
Have you tried the OM-1’s hand at video? especially slow motion. I don’t know anything about it (totally video noob here) other than it does shoot 240fps in 10bit H265, I believe.
Yes I use it, but I prefer the Lumix GH6 for video. Same lenses and it give 120 fps 4K with AF. The OM-1 only goes to 60fps in 4K then you have to drop down to HD.
Mike, amazing footage and photos! Do you know if they're still active in the area today? I'm struggling to find information on where to go. I also contacted the WWT and they said the activity this year was very low.
Is there any explanation for this behaviour and that it is restricted only to these three counties? I have never ever seen Barn Owls flying or even hunting at day time in Germany. Only when flushed. So this must be something very British 🙂 Nice footage!
I hadn't heard of it either. Although if it's rained overnight and curtailed their hunting, they can be hungry the next day and come out early to hunt.
Wow absolutely beautiful 😍😍😍
Wow, what a place!
Wonderful footage, beautiful birds.
Thank you.
Fantastic job of tracking and focusing. Very nice.
Thanks
Beautiful photo of barn owls. I really enjoy watching the bird observation video. Big LIKE for the video. Greeting from Singapore.
Thanks
Siempre aprendiendo cosas útiles.Gracias.

Marvelous.
Thanks for your comment
Wow that's amazing-next time I go to Welney I'm going to have to look for them.
They show better after some bad weather nights
Happy weekend .. wish my friends a happy day 🍉🍉🍉😄🍰
Love barn owls going too Norfolk I will have a look keep up the good work
Thanks.
Great work Mike ! Patience really does pay off ! Thank you for sharing !
Thank you.
Excellent camera control with the slow motion footage.
Panning and focusing manually at the same time is difficult.
Magnificent, simply incredible shots!!!!
Thanks.
Really enjoyable video of BO in slow motion, still takes all my time to get stills.
Glad you liked it
beautiful!
Thanks
... excellent ....
Thanks
Brilliant footage Mike , love seeing the barn owl in slow mo and great focus . Very difficult with manual focus
Yes paning and focusing at the same time is difficult.
Excellent video!!!
Thanks
WOW amazing vidéo Mike and i enjoy your vidéos very much from Montréal Canada

Wow!! What a superb video. Just make me want to go to UK just for those barn owls!!
I met a French photographer there this winter who came just for the owls.
Brilliant flight video and some outstanding stills, persistence, planning and patience. 👍👍
Thanks.
Very nice video. Wish we had this species here.
Yes we are lucky to have them.
Wonderful stuff Mike
Thank you.
Wonderful - a most enjoyable video. Thank you.

Thank you.
Splendid video and images! Thank you for taking us along.
You are welcome.
Wow! Really great shots and video!

Very well done videos and beautiful stills.
Thanks
Wonderful video. So interesting to see how they move in slow motion and the stills are super.
I love slow motion.
Arguably one of the best videos you've ever made Mike. I dont ususally leave comments but this one was screaming for it. Well done! PS. Your work is surely starting to make me want to visit UK just for bird photography session. Best regards and hello from Ireland!
I never think of the UK as a great place for wildlife photography, but perhaps we all feel that about our own patch.
Wow! I would love to visit Norfolk now! I remember seeing my first Barn Owl as a child sitting between my parents in an Austin A40 at night on our way to Aberdeen in full view of the high beam. Stunning birds.
Norfolk is the place for them
Such an amazing video, really enjoyed!!!
Thanks.
Great filming ? Great footage 👍
Thanks.
I'm envious! Seel free to send a few dozen across the North Sea.
Sorry hanging on to them!

Good to hear someone else shooting video.
@@MikeLaneFRPS Yes, come to think of it, all the other birders at the nature reserve are photographers. It is much less common!
Totally brilliant work Mike. Some really amazing shots.
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow Mike you've outdone yourself this week amazing video footage and stills my favorite bird 👍
I enjoyed editing the film.
Nice Mike… I love your honesty… we all see stunning photography, especially in manual focus but we all throw lots of time away also. But that’s why we love the challenge 👍👏

Great stuff as always Mike.

Really good shoots and video in this EP Mike! would love a day or 7 with this species!
Thanks Dennis.

I am genuinely impressed. This MF slow motion is stunning!
Great video very enjoyable. Time and patience. I am trying to find some locations where I can find Barn Owls near me. Thanks very much.
Good luck.
Superb 👌
Thank you.
Brilliant as always Mike! 👍👍
Thanks for your comment
Great footage Mike.
Thank you.
Well done Mike, I think that is one of your best videos yet. was out looking for barn owls last week but no luck. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Martin
Repeat visits to areas you know well certainly pay off in wildlife photography & this is a casing point great work Mike 👍
And Norfolk is so good for Barn owls.
Stunning slow motion capture there Mike, best i have seen from you. Love the owl/car stills as well, can see why you found it hard to choose one!
Thanks for your comment
footage around 6.00is superb and not easy to put it mildly
Video has its challanges.
Fantastic footage. Your manual focusing is brilliant, and far better than mine. So difficult. Amazing video.
Yes won't it be good when AF improves in video.
Really enjoyed this one Mike,(your namesake Delboy)
Hello Derek. Thank you.

I have seen pictures of them.
Hi Mike, do you have to pay to go to the reserve ? also when you are driving down the road and pull pull to take photos is that at the reserve
Yes if you are not a member. I did photograph them at the reserve, but day flying owls are widespread in Norfolk and I have done them in lots of places.
Great video Mike , what time of year was that as I have been to Welney on a number of occasions but not seen a Barnie ?
I was there several times during the winter. They were seen frequently from the car park.
Excellent job with MF tracking, Mike. I wasn't aware neither the OM-1 nor the Panasonic can do AF tracking in video. (I'm using a Nikon Z9 which does, albeit only up to 120 fps). There really is no camera for MFT that does video AF?

I have not been this winter but I have heard they are not showing
@@MikeLaneFRPS Thanks Mike, I'll go look for them elsewhere. I know of a few spots that at least have SEOs :)
Stunning video and stills!
When you shoot over your car do you worry about shooting through heat distortion?
No. Maybe I need to live in a colder place for that problem.
Is there any explanation for this behaviour and that it is restricted only to these three counties? I have never ever seen Barn Owls flying or even hunting at day time in Germany. Only when flushed. So this must be something very British 🙂
Nice footage!
I hadn't heard of it either. Although if it's rained overnight and curtailed their hunting, they can be hungry the next day and come out early to hunt.
Very local in the UK. It does not happen everywhere. Norfolk is the best county for day flying Barn owls, but I do not know why.
awesome videos and stills, Mike, but I prefer those WITHOUT the cars in BG , sorry :)
No problem, but I have it without the cars a thousand times already.
