Rescued tawny owls back to the wild

  • Releases are the best part of the job and it's always an incredible sight to see an animal that would otherwise have died free to live life once again.
    These tawny owls arrived at the centre as orphans and, after months of rehabilitation, the time had finally come for them to return to the wild. After taking them to a special release site, Simon opened the doors and the young owls took to the skies once more.
    This video is dedicated to Ossie, who particularly loved owls.

    😍😍😍 i love owls we have some in australia but you rarely see them ive seen one a masked owl i think its called a barnyard or snowy owl in the northern hemisphere not sure. It was perched up high in a gum tree in a pretty suburban area. It was a cold winter night and the moonlight was so pretty it was such a magical experience. Ive seen all sorts of birds of prey at a wildlife sanctuary though tawny frogmouths, wedge tailed eagles, buzzards, kites, falcons, goshawks. they're really awe inspiring up close the wedge tails are massive though and super intimidating like real life gargoyles.

    • @wildlifeaid
      @wildlifeaid  3 роки тому

      When Tawnys leave their nest, they can't fly yet. But it does not mean, their parents do not care for them. It is comparable with blackbirds and others.

    The best way to release is to throw them up in the air. Because they realize you freed them instead of them thinking they escaped.

  • @rutgerw.
    @rutgerw. 6 років тому +2

    Is it really in the best interest of the owls to have so many people standing around while they are being released? I would think it is best for wild animals to have as little interaction with humans as possible and keep the stress to a minimum?

    • @thanrose
      @thanrose 6 років тому +9

      Some species are more stressed than others by crowds, but this was a fairly quiet, genteel, and countrified gathering. A reason for doing it this way is to encourage patronage. Simon really does make sure the creatures are protected from unnecessary interference.

    • @rutgerw.
      @rutgerw. 6 років тому +1

      I can see how a balance has to be found between the different interests and I think it is wonderful how Simon is caring for the animals in such a professional way. Unfortunately some other people, although their intentions might be good, don't always do what is best for animals.
      Some time ago there was a story in the media about a Eurasian eagle-owl, terrorising a residential neighbourhood here in the Netherlands, actually attacking humans. Probably because it was hand-raised and lost its fear or indifference to humans. They ended up having to capture it and locking it up again because even if relocated it would probably seek-out a residential area and come in conflict with humans again.
      Then there is also road traffic, hunters and those that want to keep an owl as a pet because Harry Potter had one.
