Hi Geoff, thank you for showing us your beautiful collection. I’ve watched it twice. It is Cariad as in the Welsh word darling and they use a lot of Welsh names, being Welsh. The white one and Leah are my favourites. I don’t like it when the leaves go massive and I’m not keen on African Violets either.
Thanks for that info - it never occurred to me it would be Welsh - duh!🤣 It's nice to know for future reference.😁

Amasing varieties. Hard to pick a favorite Streptocarpus among them. Makes me want to collect them all.

Thanks Karan - low 70s is generally a lovely summer's day here! But if you're growing Streps much above 80°F and they'll struggle.

Really wish they were more common in the States - I've never seen one at my local plant stores! The most we have are some basic AVs for gesneriads... If only you could send a variety pack of leaves here!
If you go to Demetris website I’m sure they ship to the states. Might be an option.
I find that African violets come in 2 flavors, prolific blooming and stubborn blooming. The trick is to find the prolific kinds. I had a bunch years ago and some bloomed constantly and some never bloomed. I kind of gave up on them. At least for now.
My Texas hot chili strep is blooming nicely but my others are being very stubborn at the moment. Guess the heat got to them, we've had a hot summer with drought conditions for a while now. Upper 90's to 100 F. for weeks. Hoping they will start blooming again once temps go way down to the upper 60's indoors.
I really like that Falling stars strep Geoff! Need to try to get one.
I don't think I'll be getting any more AVs. I'm just not feeling it for some reason. And yeah sounds like the heat got to your Streps. Mine do keep blooming in the heat but they're not in direct sun - maybe the extra light of a greenhouse helps too. I've just put a few in the house which is much darker - will be interesting to see how they fare considering they have better, more stable temperatures - just less light.
I'm not doing well with African violets myself but I think there are some gorgeous ones out there - like the variegated cajun's coujon or 'K's simply put'. I'm also not doing well with the one streptocarpus I have - it possibly in too deep a pot, I'll change that. Yours are absolutely gorgeous, I can see how one can end up with a ton of these, the blooms are so varied and beautiful.
Thanks Daniela - I've just looked up your suggestions and agree - they're very pretty! I do love some variegation as blooms don't last. Planting Streps too deeply will knock them back - always better to err on the side of too small a pot too. Good luck with yours!
I have such a great flame violet. Episcia cupreata. It is trailing. It makes flowers a lot. I only got it in early summer so not sure what will happen now winter is coming. They don’t photo well. In person, the colours of the leaves are multifaceted.
Never heard of them but just looked them up. They look fab! Obviously a Gesneriad so similar in care to Streps. I was going to buy one but I can't find anything in the UK. By the looks of it I'd just reduce watering slightly when the temps drop - other than that, providing it's still getting good light it should keep going for you through winter.
Geoff, the plant you said was a species (saxorum?) looks so much like what we call nodding violet except that the leaves on your species are rounder whereas my ‘nodding violet’ leaves are kind of elongated oval shaped, (if that makes sense). I have just propagated one from my neighbours plant and have it in a spot I would not call bright shade. It seems to be flourishing and now that you’ve mentioned using them as a house plant I think I’ll give that a go. We are in spring now and I think one of these plants would do better indoors than out during summer. It will be interesting to see if it blooms for me.

I looked up your nodding violet - it does appear that they're very similar - obviously both Gesneriads. Some research on the names takes you down a complicated rabbit hole of sub genera, complex hybrids and re-classifications - so I gave up on that! But I guess they can be treated in exactly the same way. I envy you just beginning spring! Although I love autumn - I'm not a fan of the short days and long winter months ahead.
@@Grow_Up_Man55 sorry Geoff, I’ve put you to so much trouble on my behalf. I just looked at some cuttings I had put in a pot a week or so ago and the leaves aren’t really heart shaped, (don’t know what I was thinking about). I went in to edit my comment but you had beaten me to a reply before I had a chance. I’ve been busy most of the day and then couldn’t remember where I had left the pot of cuttings. That’s what happens when you have so many plants everywhere. Thanks anyway. I look forward to seeing what these cuttings will do indoors.
No trouble at all! I’m actually interested in this stuff. It looks like there are several plants commonly referred to as nodding violet, including Streptocarpus saxorum - sometimes known as Streptocarpella saxorum - a sub genus of Streptocarpus! You see where this is going 🤣. Mine definitely did better in a more shady position than ‘Sun through shade’ which is where I had it previously. I’m hoping for a proper multiple blooming now which is looking likely. 😁
They are looking great Geoff. I put mine outside this year and they didn't do so well, so I have to get them inside.
Did the av flowered for you this year?
I tried mine outside too but like yours they didn't really cope. Some of the AVs have bloomed - but I've decided I'm not that much of an AV fan. Although I love the aroids you gave me cutting from - they're all doing really well!

What does DS stand for? And what are you spraying those little b**** aphids with?
They're a Ukrainian Strep. hybridizer - here's the catalogue: streptocarpus-dimetris.com/catalog-en/ I alternative spraying between a systemic (Miracle-Gro BugClear Ultra) and a contact killer (Neudorff BugFree Bug and Larvae Killer) and I do it every 3 to 4 weeks (roughly!).
