- Time to get back behind the wheel of a race car and specifically the MINI Challenge car. I'm going to be taking part in the one-make series at both Rockingham in April and at Oulton Park for the MINI Festival in August. To teach me the ropes on my first outing in the car at Oulton Park, I'm joined by Charlie Butler-Henderson, 2015 champion in the series and also a current driver.

Nice to have you on board Tim! Tried to invite you to a Mini Festival last year but you were in Germany! I work with a lot of the Mini Challenge drivers and have been doing so for three years, will make sure I come over and say Hi at some point, look forward to seeing you there

Awesome! I worked in the mini challenge for the one of teams on work experience, at oulton park too. Fast pace stuff, hours of prep, everything's go go go! great fun though

don't take this wrong Tim, but I love the fact that you crashed. Just shows what you said, you won't get anywhere without pushing, and also that it's just not about getting in a car and be able to drive it fast. Keep up the work, hope you'll improve even more!

Good job Tim :) I heard Charlie talk about you improving your lap times but you didn't say anything about how close your times were to other Mini drivers from past events there. Hope you were close.

Awesome! I thought your spin was going to be much worse, with the speed you were going, it looked like it was going to be a hard hit against the barrier, glad it was just a little kiss :) i'd love to see this, do you know if it will be televised or not? Good luck in the race though :)

Hi Shmee. I hope your well. Oulton Park is my 'local' circuit. I mainly go there for the BSB. (British Superbikes). What is your favourite part of the track? Personally for me it would be Turn 1 through cascades and tound the hairpin, but as a spectator watching last ditch attempts of overtakes through lodge and over dear-leap to finish the lap is epic.

No way that roll cage weighs as much as all the stock components removed. Seats, insulation, carpet, speakers, oem wheels, muffler? That crash could have been so much worse.. slicks on a cold wet track.. tough work

tim were you clutching while shifting gears up in your first stint?? thought you only have to clutch while downshifting??

eltiburon1983 you will have to get up to speed/high revs before u can shift without clutch i believe, thats why he used the clutch leaving the pits
How is the "insurance" on these sort of rally/racing cars? It's not your own car so do you need to pay something for that little dent or is that just a normal "it will puff out" situation?
Shmee - could you see yourself buying a Pagani Huayra at any stage in the coming 5 years?
Who knows... Time will tell! In five years there are many more nice cars ;)

What are the downsides of sequential gearbox? Why dont I see them on modded cars?
Māris Samats They are expensive and not as maintenance free as normal manual gearboxes. City driving with those gearboxes would not be that smooth and "precise"..

Try to do some heel and toe during downshifts, it helps a lot in FWD cars!

Tim, if you're considering becoming a better race car driver, maybe you should get a racing rig and purchase an iRacing subscription. Laser scanned tracks and cars will definitely boost your confidence in track driving if you dont have immediate access to one irl
Drivers can't stand to be reminded of what can happen to 'em in a racecar. They don't go to hospitals, they don't go to funerals. You get a driver to a funeral before he's actually dead, you've made history, darlin'....😀
