im tasting again for the first time and to my surprise the label says the blend is matured in sherry casks ,i dont recall if that was laways the case in the past but indeed it does smell and taste like sherry cask, however it has a slight bittenress in the finish i do not appreceate as much but its tolerable i suppose
Not anymore, now it's just cheap, picked up a bottle yesterday and it's gone downhill after being very good for the money. Now It's seems to be all grain whisky. Bring back the old Grouse.
The Famous Grouse was one of the very first whiskies I bought when I was first getting into whisky in my early twenties. Good memories in that sense, but if I want a cheap, available blend nowadays, I find the Hankey Bannister, the Scottish Leader or Teacher's Highland Cream offer better quality for similar money. (Although sadly the Teacher's has gone down in quality).
ArtMorte Don't Teacher's and White Horse seem to be a see-saw (or a teeter-totter, depending on where you live...) When one is up the other is down...? Hankey Bannister is mostly grain, but it's good grain!... I haven't tasted Scottish Leader in about a decade, but I do occasionally enjoy Isle of Skye, The Antiquary, Mitchell's, and Islay Mist...
Never had White Horse, never seen it here in Finland. Hankey Bannister is a little rough, but it's a good type rough for my liking - especially after some oxidation in the bottle, when it gains more flavours and depth.
it is indeed quite smooth but very little malt and yes the bitter finish is disapointing but tolerable after a few glasses ,,does the job to give me a nice mellow buzz though
Hadn't really sipped this one neat & bought this one recently. Must say for the price it's pretty good. Smooth, Extremely drinkable & easy going. Definitely worth a go!
I got a small bottle of Famous Grouse when I wanted to try a few cheap blends, and I have to say, while I am actually fine with the taste, it smells so strange that it's off-putting. Also, since trying Famous Grouse I pick up a note of the same smell in my Old Pulteney. I am not sure what the word for this note is, but it is overwhelming and off putting in the Famous Grouse.
I like it. Really much. I dont think its that spicy though. A kind, soft and a bit of candy flavor. Easy to drink. My favorite whisky is the swedish Mackmyra.
Thank you; This channel is good, it gives accurate information. Now I am drinking the Famous Grouse (the most famous in Scotland), it is an acceptable cheap whiskey but I did not like its finish: it is very acidic and the spiciness remains.
The Famous Grouse is one I revisit every year or two... I usually consider it money well spent. Some years the sherried components have been more forward, but it's no surprise that downscale whiskies see less sherry today... Compare it to it's alternatives and it scores some points. I've often wondered how much of the bitterness of 3 year grains comes from tired casks and how much from caramel colouring. The industry will tell you it's tasteless, but Willie Tait once added (an admittedly generous) dose of e150 to a glass of water for me, and it was nasty-bitter!! For those times when you 'just want a drink, you don't want to study it' FG is an above average alternative... If you (like me) sip your whiskies neat, another 10 USD opens up a world of more interesting alternatives...
im glad to have found your 7 year old comment, you see i recently purchased famous grous as i have not had it for many years but noticed the label says it is matured in sherry casks to my surprise i do not recollect this for the original famous grouse has this always been the case?? indeed i smell and taste sherry cask but i can not recall if it was always made this way ,but even on there website it does not mention that the famous grouse original is finished in sherry so idk what to make of it
@@ARCSTREAMS It's about time for me to revisit it, but it typically contains Macallan and Highland Park, which accounts for the sherry influence, although the grain component is surely larger than the malt. If the _grain_ is aged in sherry cask as well you've got something really special. Might be my next bottle, just to see what it's like now. In general, it's a better blend than most. Won't change your life, but will enhance your evening!
@@ThePeaceableKingdom hmm so you dont remmeber if they ever advertised the sherry influence on there label or in general addvertisment? i am not an expert much on the taste to say if here grain was aged in sherry casks too, i do not think so otherwise it would have a stronger sherry note than i think it has now but like i said im not expert,, give it a try and let me know, thanks for the reply
@@ARCSTREAMS I don't recall them ever mentioning sherry casks on the label of the standard Famous Grouse. It was just something insiders knew if they knew the brand. I'll definitely revisit it soon. For a basic dram it's a pretty good one.
@@ThePeaceableKingdom yeah i dont recall the mention either but it dont necessarly mean it was never the case, besides labels change all the time maybe now they feel like advertising it more ,im sure dewars white label also has some sherry influence from some of the whisky in it even though the label may not mention it i may have seen it mentioned somwhere on there info and i can def smell and taste it although not as robust as the grouse
I would think Coke would overwhelm Scotch. Club soda is definitely preferred for blended Scotches. In fact, that is how it was mostly drunk in the gentleman’s clubs where it was first appreciated. As a substitute for Brandy
And how does the whisky in the head? Do you hear the grouse? Do you get this natural spirit? Do you become a kind of grouse? It is so exciting, I must know.
idk if this something new but reading the label it says they mature the blend in sherry casks?? and yes i do smell and taste cherry cask in it but i can not remember if this was always so or something new? funny they do not mention this on there website

If you dislike grain whisky... why review blends at all? You write off "cheap" scotches like Grants, which is actually a very good value brand... But give the "Fireball" dreck high marks? LOL!!
i used to enjoy grants family reserve 750ml but now its no longer available in 750ml and its replaced by something called triple wood that i did not much care for,,i loved the funky moldy buiscuity dark fruit cake flavor of the reserve that i no longer find, ballantines is close to it but more robust and sweet so i prefer the grants ,too bad they only seel the reserve in like 1.5 litres
@@GeorgeKnew for some reason i can no longer find the familly reserve in 750ml bottles but they sell it in larger bottles which i do not like ,i think the quality and flavor changes in larger bottles,,sometimes i find the 250 or 375ml bottles are better than the 750 as well
@@ARCSTREAMS Ah, I didn't understand... yes, I think they discontinued the 750ml bottling. J&B went south for awhile, but is now back to pretty good... and if you like some peat... hard to beat Teacher's for the price/quality... and it used to be much better!
true. but then again this one as any other blend is meant to add ice or coke or both, complexity is paid in the over cost the destileries charge for malts....
The worst whisky I have ever tasted! Bleh.. Even worse than JW Red Label. Its basically just colored vodka. Shame calling this even the name "whisky" Never again...
Well below 20 for a full litre?? WTF? I live in Europe, and I've just bought a 0.5 litre bottle for well over twenty. This ain't no cheap whiskey for us.
Teacher's used to be great value for money. The last two bottles I had were saccharine tasting chemical swill. Suntory has ruined the brand in my opinion.
Calling this Scotch is false advertising. It doesn't taste like Scotch, it doesn't smell like Scotch and instead of a warm glow it gives you a nasty head ache.
I love the bottle. I love even more the (old) Black Grouse bottle. So unique and classy.
“If the Scots prefer it, it must be really good... or cheap!” Aye, we Scots hae a nase for cheap booze

By far the best cheap blend
I don't know, I prefer Teacher's to this nowadays. But it's quite good for a blend.

I bought a bottle today for 12 euros here in Spain and I enjoy it... I prefer this whisky than grant's triple wood or the red label.
12???? Thats cheapp i just paided 18euro's for 1 liter. I am going tk enjoy it with some friends tonight.
What about Grant's rum cask finish?
I just sampled a sip of this whisky. I like it.

if u take it neat its super spicy in the tongue but tastes flavorble still

first thing i smell is orange/darkchocolate and that means sherry cask it is also the first thing i taste
Great Vids! Just purchased a bottle recently. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
It's strange. At first it tasted musty to me, but now you point it out it does taste fruity. Older fruit.
It's our turn to brand for sweets and sours, me and a few buddies of mine

hi does anyone know how to check my grouse bottle to know when it was bottled or its expiration date please?

I tried a bottle of this and could hardly drink it. JW Black is my normal drink along with JW Blue.
If Famous Grouse is one of the cheapest blends and for the masses, which one rates better? Dewar’s White Label or Famous Grouse then?

16 pounds in England for 1L

13 euros in Spain 0,7L

Not really, I think that dreadful mouthwash known as Bell’s is a bit cheaper.
really good bang for the buck stuff
havehad several train journeys shared with the grouse. certainly the best of a bad bunch
