  • The guys decided to double up in one review and try for the first time, Famous Grouse. It's hard to believe that the #1 selling Scotch in Scotland is just now making an appearance on our show.

    Like with other budget blends, ice can hide the grain taste. My best friend was disabled and on a fixed income, Famous Grouse was one that he enjoyed. I'll always think of him and keep some around. R.I.P. Bill.

    The Naked Grouse is quite good for a blended malt. You guys should do it next!

      I was really looking forward to the NG and so picked up a bottle. I found it rather hot for 43% and it had less flavor than some other low malt blended whiskies. I could taste the added sherry finish, but not much of any actual malt whisky flavor. It's on deck now as a give away bottle. I'd much rather have Glenmorangie 10 which I can get for less. At $30 a bottle, there are some other decent (better in my opinion) single malts for only a few dollars more like Tomatin 12 (43% abv for $33) and Loch Lomond 12 (46% abv for $35).

    • @TheWhiskyExplorer
      @TheWhiskyExplorer 4 роки тому +1

      xiamengbaby I completely agree if you can get those single malts for those prices. I’m in 🇨🇦 and those same scotches cost a LOT more here. I can get the NG for about $43 CAD. Single malts here start at about $55 CAD for a decent 10yr age statement.

    • @xiamengbaby
      @xiamengbaby 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheWhiskyExplorer Ah, ok. That's a bummer on the malt prices. When I get toward the low end of price spectrum I tend to go for a bourbon or rye as the quality seems to be better at cheaper prices compared to scotch whisky. Are your prices on American whiskies high as well in Canada?

    • @davedavey6863
      @davedavey6863 4 роки тому +1

      @@xiamengbaby Sorry, but it sounds like you're under the spell of some confirmation bias. NG is not a "low malt blended whisky", it's a blended malt comprised of only Macallen, Glenrothes, Glenturret, and Highland Park. There is no grain whisky, so I find it hard to take your opinion seriously when you say that it doesn't taste very malty. Not to mention that while glemorangie and Tomatin are great, their base offerings are unsherried. So they're not really worth mentioning as a substitute for NG in its niche as a budget sherried scotch

    • @TheWhiskyExplorer
      @TheWhiskyExplorer 4 роки тому +1

      xiamengbaby unfortunately they are. However, I do find that American bourbon and rye still presents pretty good value for us here. I’ve gravitated towards it on my whisky journey.

    Try Naked Grouse cost is about $30.00 and is a blended malt, 3 single malts finished in Sherry casks.

    Nice video! I wonder if I should try these. One of my locals has the handles of FG for pretty cheap. We are currently loving NAKED Grouse. You guys should really get that one in the mix for the Thursday live comparison. It's the blended malt from them, no grain. 43%, and finished in oloroso after its blended.

  • @scottteague3738

    Had em both. Personally, I'd skip the combo, drop down $29 and buy the Naked Grouse all day every day. Naked would go toe to toe with Monkey Shoulder. Thats what you need to compare at the Thursday live show.

    The Famous Grouse will always be a nostalgic drink for me as I shared with an elderly gentleman in Yorkshire, who used to work for the BBC in their wardrobe department. I've never even thought of adding water. The next time I buy it, I'll have to try.
    I completely disagree that you should start someone out on a lesser scotch. My first 2 were Talisker 10 and Lagavulin 16.

    Here in Scotland if you watch people drinking blends like Grouse at the bar, they'll usually have it with a good splash of water.

    Nice Twofer gents.
    If you ever find the 12 or 18 year Famous grouse , buy them!!!
    I have 2 bottles of each and there some of my most cherished bottles.
    There blended Single Malt whisky with no grain whisky added. Plus there mainly older Macallan and Highland Park whisky’s.
    Slainte guys!!!

    Had this recently. Worth the money. Its got a great nose but pallete came off a bit of sulphur not as grainy as a ballentines better finish and first hit of sherry or sweet fruit but the sulphur is tough to get by but i was happy to try it. Will use for blending but will want to take that sulphur note out. I agree with it not having astringent component that vodka or rubbing alchol note. I think king street is the only blend in price point i really enjoy. Overall nice sweetness, sherry note, even peat, good body at 80 proof but its no Johnny black, even glenlivet 12 for example is not much more coin ill drink monkey shoulder all day no off putting note i.m.o. either. Guess i might try naked grouse have heard good things.

      If you're used to Islay malts, you'll be disappointed. I bought the handle, had about two drinks and then gave it away. The alcohol note was strong and the peat very faint. Try a glass before you buy a bottle.

      Tastes just like JW Black Label, a little lighter on the mouthful and has a shorter finish but is a damn good value if you're looking for something similar. This is my daily sipper

      I actually stopped drinking Scotch for the most part, except for the occasional single malt Islay,.. I still keep plenty of those on the shelves.
      I went back to American whiskies, and I lean towards high rye bourbons nowadays.

      @@StillLivinginthewoods I'm definitely more of a bourbon guy myself! I mix it up pretty frequently though between bourbon and scotch depending on what I'm in the mood for that night. Smoky Black Grouse is my every day budget scotch and lately 1783 Small Batch has been my go-to budget bourbon. Absolute insane value for the quality. Cheers friend!

    1 ice cube, and don't give it too much of a chance to melt. Works well for both blends. I prefer Teacher's Scotch, as I believe the peat content is more pronounced...

    FG is £16 or less when discounted here in the UK and is a mixer. Unfair to compare it with Monkey Shoulder which is a blended malt and 50% more expensive. You should try the Glenturret peated (which is no Ardbeg) and you will see why the Smoky Black has only a very light peat flavour.

    As someone who drinks almost exclusively blends, famous is one of my least favorite (along with grants). J&B, Chivas, Johnnie, Ballantines, Buchannan's, DeWars are all superior, imo. There's a weird off putting flavor in famous. Haven't had smoky yet.

    I was looking forward to tasting The Famous Grouse - afterwards I wished I hadn't wasted my $$. Not a drop on Monkey Shoulder or JW Black. Would even prefer JW red over TF Grouse. Won't bother trying Smokey, unless it's given to me.

  • @marksaliba4194
    @marksaliba4194 4 роки тому

    The single nastiest Scotch I've ever put in my mouth, that famous grouse.🤮 J&B and JW red are sadly way better. The smoky black is very marginally better, because the smoke covers a little of the young grain, but is quite plasticy itself. Not sure how this is the most popular Scotch in the mother land. Probably a drop of Macallan and HP in these blends. Either way, I'm glad someone likes these. Cheers
