The writer and director Luc Besson wanted to cast Prince for the role of Ruby Rhod but he declined the role. So when Luc casted Chris Tucker he told him to act as Prince would have done the role. When I was in my early 20's after a day of surfing with friends, we got really stoned and watched this. I'd seen it before. But not high. Ruby almost killed me. I laughed so hard I almost passed out. Multiple times. Then. The morning I woke up and my stomach was so sore. I had a lump the size of a golf ball on my groin, and I couldn't move. Turns out I'd laughed so hard I'd given myself a healthy dose of double hernia. Required immediate surgery. I kid you not. A huge part of this movie's premise very transparently came from the "Harry Canyon" segment from the 1981 animated movie Heavy Metal, which adapted various science fiction & fantasy stories from the French magazine of the same name. The cyberpunk aesthetic that a lot of people associate with movies like Blade Runner was initially inspired by "The Long Tomorrow", the short story by Dan O' Bannon and comics artist Mobius which got adapted into that segment.
I remember when this movie hit the theaters, one of the most common criticisms of this movie were chris tucker and gary oldman. both were criticized for their over the top performances. I think those critics needed their brains examined, because this whole movie was flamboyant and colorful and over the top. They were just keeping pace with the rest of the craziness. I saw this movie for the first time on a date, and it was an awesome move. she loved scifi, and we ended up staying out a whole hour just talking about the movie excitedly. As a date movie it was sorta a flop, cause we were glued to the screen, no time to make out. but as a relationship builder and entertainer it was A+ material. I've been on countless dates and thats one that i still remember fondly.
It's such a great film. John Paul Gaultier designed the costumes for the film, which is why all of these folks look so awesome. They also cast a ton of famous runway models of the day.
This reaction made me sooo happy! I absolutely adore this movie, the only thing that ever confused is that it is not ridiculously more popular. So happy to see people who adore it as much as I do!
Never been able to witness someone watching this for the first time super enjoyable, Chris was the BEST surprise. He wasn’t the typical comedic relief where we’re making fun of him he was his own character who was just funny. The sixth element. I loved watching you guys watch.
I love that with a title like "The Fifth Element" you expect some kind of stoic, Kafkaesque dreamscape of a science fiction fable and instead you end up with falsetto screaming Chris Tucker and Bruce Willis trying to bang an alien. You just can't disapprove.
The costume design (the wardrobe) is "insane" because it was made by French designer *JEAN PAUL GAULTIER* . He designed over 1000 costumes for this film. 👍
As much as people love this movie the one thing that remains underrated is the music. The music in this movie is an absolute vibe and is the 1st movie I think of when I think of when people talk about music of the future. It’s absolute perfection and perfectly encapsulates what realistically music can be in the future because it blends so many styles and cultural sounds together in one song after song.
13:40 For those that haven't seen the movie, as soon as they run away from the police in the taxi cab there's a quick chase scene with some really great music in the background, they probably skipped over it because of UA-cam and copyright things but it's a pretty cool scene even though it's very short. I was obsessed with finding the music on CD back in 90s
I was lucky enough to see this in the theater. It felt like they put three movies' worth of work into it. Walking out of the theater, I was ready for a sequel.
I agree, it shows his range while still being comedic, I love his role in this movie. It wouldn't be as grest if it wasn't for his over the top reactions. I can't imagine this film without him. He stole the show for me 😂😂😂😊
I love that you love Ruby! I love Ruby. I missed this in theaters, but my dad gave it to me randomly for Christmas the year it came out. He saw the cover and Bruce Willis and thought i would love it. Best Present Ever.
I remember seeing the first trailer in the movie theater and they hadn't cast a lead yet. Luc Besson did a great job with The Fifth Element and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. They really beautiful and fun worlds. I think the latter failed due to the leads not having great chemistry and the source material being fairly unknown as it was based on a French Comic. It has grown on me over time.
When this film came out, a lot of people hated Chris Tucker as one of the most annoying characters. I remember my Dad saying been waiting years for someone to do that with regarding Bruce shooting the Alien straight away. This was my first DVD purchase back in 1998 and still have it.
Everyone in this movie was absolutely perfect. It is such an iconic movie and the irony of this statement I am about to make, makes it even more hilarious: the stars aligned perfectly to bring this cast together for the perfect sci-fi action comedy.

Luc came up with this idea as a teenager. I thank you two for watching one of my all-time favorite comfort movies.
One of my favorite Movies ever since 97. I never get tired of watchhing this and everytime it's on I watch it till the end. Very unique flick 🎬
9:48 No it's the "survivor" of that crash they just told you about that just happened a couple minutes ago that we also just saw.
It's pointless. When i saw which two were reacting to this i already knew this was an exercise in futility!
@@SecondSince I blame Steph. She's like peak gen z brain rot. "Yaaaasss" " He's giving dramaaaaa" It's so dumb and lowers other people's mental faculties just by being in proximity with her.
10:27 The bandage costume was Milla Jovovich's idea. It was having her hair dyed orange that bothered her. The chemicals caused it to fall out
I'd like to point out that the Main Hero and Villain never met face to face 😂😂😂
You're right. I just watched it a week ago in 4k
Who would you class as the main hero and villain? Cause I would say they did
Zorg and Corbin
@@mattroper7214I’d vote that Corbin is really the sidekick and Lelu is the hero.
@@mattroper7214 nah, zorg and lelu
This is our family movie. Hubby and my old behind watched it in the drive in cinema over here in Germany when it came out, and now we love to watch it with the kids (they are 18 now). We all love to quote it. So much fun. Enjoyed watching it with you.
ich sah es auf VHS zu Hause :)
You’re kind of right shaming people for not telling you about this 😂
"He is the Sixth Element" spot on!
The costumes were done by Jean-Paul Gaultier, that's why they're so good.
I like how she went from "it's so hard to make a space movie and not make it look like star wars" to "this place looks like Coruscant" lol
It did though. It's fit the descriptions from the books.
Gary Oldman, iconic role. No better actor than him.
Imagine us 90’s kids watching this movie in ‘97. The confusion I got when Chris Tucker showed up, the diva, everything! This was very formative 😂
This movie is criminally underrated. I think a lot of people just don't get the quirky vibe but it's been one of my faves since it came out
The priest was Ian holm, whom played ash in alien and bilbo in lord of the rings….fab actor.
It's such a great film. John Paul Gaultier designed the costumes for the film, which is why all of these folks look so awesome. They also cast a ton of famous runway models of the day.
By far the best reaction. I used to watch this movie as a kid. So many times. And watching you guys react to is was so wholesome. Thanks ❤❤❤❤
Got some great news for you two.
This is one of the most rewatchable movies ever made and it gets better every time you see it.
This was my first solo PG-13 movie in theaters after turning 13...totally worth it.
This reaction made me sooo happy! I absolutely adore this movie, the only thing that ever confused is that it is not ridiculously more popular. So happy to see people who adore it as much as I do!
Did anyone else hear Kristen say "What what in the but " 😂😂😂😂😅
“Corben, my man!”
“Bzzz, bzzz!”
“Unbelievable!”
Chris Tucker was great, like a radio DJ on crack.
I think you girls would enjoy Valerian and the city of thousand planets.
Never been able to witness someone watching this for the first time super enjoyable, Chris was the BEST surprise. He wasn’t the typical comedic relief where we’re making fun of him he was his own character who was just funny. The sixth element.
I loved watching you guys watch.
This was one of the Greatest Films of The 90s 😂😂😂
Man. This is why I love reaction videos. I got to share the excitement of watching one of my favorite movies as if it was the first time.
I love that with a title like "The Fifth Element" you expect some kind of stoic, Kafkaesque dreamscape of a science fiction fable and instead you end up with falsetto screaming Chris Tucker and Bruce Willis trying to bang an alien. You just can't disapprove.
never seen it like that LOL but yeah that´s how the cookie crumbles
One of my favorite movies of all time. So creative. So many great actors from the past.
Luc Besson also made some great French movies, like Taxi
The costume design (the wardrobe) is "insane" because it was made by French designer *JEAN PAUL GAULTIER* . He designed over 1000 costumes for this film. 👍
As much as people love this movie the one thing that remains underrated is the music. The music in this movie is an absolute vibe and is the 1st movie I think of when I think of when people talk about music of the future.
It’s absolute perfection and perfectly encapsulates what realistically music can be in the future because it blends so many styles and cultural sounds together in one song after song.
Eric Serra worked on the score, which is brilliantly erratic.
13:40 For those that haven't seen the movie, as soon as they run away from the police in the taxi cab there's a quick chase scene with some really great music in the background, they probably skipped over it because of UA-cam and copyright things but it's a pretty cool scene even though it's very short. I was obsessed with finding the music on CD back in 90s
yep, I HAD to find it too. Cheb Khaled - Alech Taadi
I was lucky enough to see this in the theater. It felt like they put three movies' worth of work into it. Walking out of the theater, I was ready for a sequel.
This was back when Milla Jovovich got FULLY NAKED in every movie she was in.
I’m so happy to see someone love watching the 5th Element the way it truly deserves to be enjoyed.
When you rewatch, look for circles in the frame and the use of the number 5 🧐
Also, Ian Holm's introductory speech is exactly 60 seconds.
This is one of my all time favorite movies.
Chris Tucker hates this movie being mentioned, but quite honestly I think its his best acting.
It's so over the top and honestly super cringe by today's standards. I don't care because it's hilarious and I love it
I agree, it shows his range while still being comedic, I love his role in this movie.
It has grown on me over time.
i just love Cara !
i saw this movie in theaters back in 1997, just blew my mind! Chris & Bruce rocks. still one of my favorites.
"He is the 6th Element." 😆😆😆
When this film came out, a lot of people hated Chris Tucker as one of the most annoying characters. I remember my Dad saying been waiting years for someone to do that with regarding Bruce shooting the Alien straight away.
This was my first DVD purchase back in 1998 and still have it.
Everyone in this movie was absolutely perfect. It is such an iconic movie and the irony of this statement I am about to make, makes it even more hilarious: the stars aligned perfectly to bring this cast together for the perfect sci-fi action comedy.
When the priest runs into the room with a gun and says:
Blah Blah Blah, Mister Willis!
and Bruce Willis answers with a smirk:
Dallas.
- priceless
He calls him, Mr. Wallace.
Genuinely one of the best overall movies of all time. Its one of those movies you can ALWAYS watch it just feels good to watch.
I like how comedic the priest is in this space movie, but how crazy he was in alien.
And Lord of The Rings: The Hobbit
It's so, much fun watching these two cute ladies together. They are just so wild and outrageous with their antics.
I can confirm, Milla Jovovich is, indeed, perfect, right up there with Kristen ❤
