For me, this is the best performance Andy Serkis gives as Gollum in his career. Not only because the technology finally became advanced enough that the VFX team could accurately capture Andy’s performance with the face camera and tracking dots on his face (which didn’t exist when they filmed LOTR) but he’s playing Gollum who isn’t yet effected by the events and encounters with people he’s had in the LOTR trilogy. He hasn’t had a conversation with a single living thing in almost 500 years, so this is both threatening and exciting for him.

The eagles are not a taxi service. They have jobs to do. The have orders to follow. They only reason Gandalf in able to call them is because he saved the life of the king eagle many years ago, so they own him.
I made a similar comment, in short the eagles don't know what they're doing and where they're going. Gandalf just used his magic to get the moth to fly and tell the king eagle (thanks for confirming there was a king eagle). They just rescued them and put them on the plateau to keep them safe, that was the safest spot. Also they would be wary of smaug so they wouldn't want the dragon to come after them. So they kept their distance.
According to the book, one of the reasons why the Dwarves needed Bilbo is because there are 13 Dwarves and that is an unlucky number. Bilbo makes things 14. The reason why Gandalf has a friendship with The Eagles is because he saved the Alpha Eagle from an arrow. They are in debt ever since. Bilbo’s mother was more adventurous than his father. Father was more grounded. This is why Gandalf picked Bilbo.
The Eagles agree to help Gandalf as a favor, in return for him having saved the life of Gwaihir (The Lord of the Eagles), and they would not take them anywhere near where men lived, who might shoot at them if they flew too close to settlements. They would only transport the Company a short distance to a safer location.
What's so great: when Gandalf says "Home is behind, the world is ahead" after Bilbo joins the company, those are the lyrics to the song that Pippin sings to Denethor in ROTK as Faramir's horse company charges to their doom. It illustrates how Bilbo's adventures and tales have become a part of Hobbit culture and their lore.
I loved watching the movie because it's wonderful to watch parts of the movie and think "Wow, so that's how this thing led to that event in The Lord of the Rings." I'm looking forward to seeing the next reactions.

1:17:02 in the books the eagles didn't want to intervene in any wars or anything happening in middle earth. Luckily gandolf is a good friend of theirs form a long time before.
The three movies have tons of non-canon filler, but by far this one had the least, it was actually pretty faithful. The meeting of the wise in Rivendell is not recounted in dialog in the book but it’s alluded to (as the Council of White Wizards). Scenes involving Bilbo are pretty faithful - the book is 95% limited omniscient point of view looking over Bilbo’s shoulder. If there were a cut of the movies with only the Bilbo scenes, it would be pretty faithful. The non-Bilbo scenes are almost entirely the added filler.
I'd like to imagine thats what happens when its not retold by bilbo. I mean the trip of gandalf to the dol goldur where he discovered sauron really happened in the books but it just happened way before the hobbit. In the battle of the five armies bilbo was knocked out but still of course the fighting would continue without him. There are things I wished that didn't happen like the love triangle or the dwarves facing smaug in erebor but overall a lot things can be canon.
Just a little tidbit, might help understand the overall feel of these films, The Hobbit was originally written as a children's book, full of wonder ect, where as TLOTR books were aimed at a more mature audience.
Yep, when I was a kid in the 1980s, during Thanksgiving and Christmas, local television stations would run the Animated Hobbit and Lord of The Rings movies.
Wow Chara actually knew Dragons covet gold! That raises her IQ about 40 points over a lot of other reactors. 6:26 Thorin and Balin actually weren't there, Balin was 7 when Smaug took Erebor, Thorin was older, around 27 or so but he wasn't at the mountain. 29:26 actually this is long before what you saw. You saw the aftermath of Balin taking back Moria, with Ori and Balin in the tomb. Also Azog was actually killed in that battle, the Dwarves pushed them back. The Battle of Azanulbizar happened because Azog beheaded and mutilated Thrór, Thráin II rallied not only an army of Durin's folk but all the dwarves of Middle Earth and for 6 years they destroyed Orc strongholds in the Misty Mountains fighting all the way to the Eastern Gate of Moria. Outnumbered the Dwarves fought hard again and again until Nain arrived with Dwarves of the Iron Hills and they stormed forward driving the orcs to the gate and Nain called out Azog only to be killed by the orc. Dain Ironfoot which you saw briefly, sprang forward beheading Azog at the tender age of 32. Azog's head was put on a pike. Dain looked in the Eastern Gate of Moria and saw Durin's Bane, the Balrog of Moria. The houses divided not seizing Moria and the Dwarves of Durin moved to the Southern Blue Mountains to wait to take back Erebor and Khazad-dum.
After recently having re-watched the movies for the first time, I must admit there is much more in them that I appreciate now then I did 10years ago. And yes, Martin Freeman as Bilbo, and his relationship to everyone, makes the movie. I would have wished that the movies had kept the arc about the son of the White Orc wishing to avenge the death of his father, instead of keeping the White Orc alive but having him loose a hand...
Gandalf doesn't "SUMMON" the eagles. They aren't his servants. They are their own kingdom. He requests their help, and they have he autonomy to help him or turn him down if they wish.
Peter and WETA don't get enough credit for giving all the dwarves their own distinct look and personalities. Even in the book, you barely know who's who.
Martin Freeman tells a great story that when the first film came out, he and his then-partner let their young kids watch the scene where the dwarfs show up at Bag End, figuring it was family friendly. Their six-year-old daughter quickly got upset because "Those dwarves are BULLYING DADDY"! 😂
I love the making of for the hobbit and the lord of the rings. That is why I bought the Blu-ray collectors editions of both. Hours and hours of how these epic tales were brought to the big screen. Also, the playback is mirrored, everything is flipped to opposite side. Plus any words on the screen are backwards like a mirror. I'm not used to seeing that on this channel. Editing error? Love the nails Achara. Hope you ladies have a happy new year. Love the reaction vids.
The Hobbit was originally written as a children's adventure story. The Lord of the Rings was later written as a dramatic treatise on good versus evil. The Hobbit was then later retconned to be in the same universe where the magic invisibility ring that Bilbo found is the one ring of Sauron. Other changes to the Hobbit were made to align the story in the same universe.
You actually saw those trolls as statues in the first film of the Lord of the rings trilogy. The Fellowship of the Ring, where Aragon was passing through with the hobbit right before Frodo was stabbed in the shoulder.
To my humble opinion. I think this is a PERFECT rendition of "Page to Theater" of any character I have ever seen. Whenever I read the book as a kid and teenager. I saw Bilbo EXACTLY like the one on the screen before you. And these movies were entertaining. But go a little off the rails in every other way. Lol. But I enjoyed them.
I love the fact that the entire scene with the trolls doesn't really need to be in the movie, but in the books it was one of, if not the first page (except for the map at the front), to have illustrated pages, so it's highly memorable for all the readers of the book.
The Elves are seen as wise, but I've just thought of the reason. They're immortal. What better way to pass the peace times, learning and studying the world around you, it's history, and it's lore. You'd develop a very wide range of skills over the course of your life.
Most of the actors in The Hobbit trilogy & LOTR trilogy have appeared in MCU. Thranduil was in Guardians of the Galaxy & Thorin in Captain America! The major exception is all the members of the fellowship of the ring! This is why all actors playing elves have appeared in MCU except Legolas!
Martin Freeman does not get enough credit for his portrayal of Bilbo. To me, he’s up there with Elijah, Sir Ian, and Viggo

There are fan edits that cut out all the non-canon stuff, turning the whole trilogy into a single two hour movie.
You can tell this channel is a huge movie fans because the edits are top tier
I would have wished that the movies had kept the arc about the son of the White Orc wishing to avenge the death of his father, instead of keeping the White Orc alive but having him loose a hand...
say what you will about this trilogy but martin freeman was an EXCELLENT bilbo
The Rankin Bass version is the best. You ought to react to that. Cult classic.
“Don’t you fart! Please fart!” Haha
Ladies that introduction was not what we expected..but some of us needed😂😂Enjoyed the watchalong❤
This new hair color is absolutely it 🤞🏽💕 literally it suits you so well
I'd love someone to watch the animated Hobbit film. I grew up on it!
I think Kristen watched it, she mentioned in their LOTR reaction she saw the cartoons, and she even know some references in the cartoon
It's superior to the live-action just from being like 90 minutes long 😂
you know what hell yeah! Gandalf should mean party time 😆 💯🧙♂️
As a true rider of Rohan, growing up very near Bag End
I much appreciate the beard care tips.
Thank you.
There is nothing filler about the Hobbit trilogy. Soo worth watching!
It was just as much fun watching you two react as it was watching the dwarves running from one incident to the next!
This was the highlight of my day
Gandalf doesn't "SUMMON" the eagles. They aren't his servants. They are their own kingdom. He requests their help, and they have he autonomy to help him or turn him down if they wish.
Peter and WETA don't get enough credit for giving all the dwarves their own distinct look and personalities. Even in the book, you barely know who's who.
In the extended *3D version* it looks much more spectacular.☺ Definitely an underrated trilogy. I love it as much as LOTR.❤❤❤
Martin Freeman tells a great story that when the first film came out, he and his then-partner let their young kids watch the scene where the dwarfs show up at Bag End, figuring it was family friendly. Their six-year-old daughter quickly got upset because "Those dwarves are BULLYING DADDY"! 😂
I swear i was just thinking if you girls watched this one already and here it is,im so happy
A book reader and a caricature watcher. Very nice mix to react. 🎉🎉🎉
You actually saw those trolls as statues in the first film of the Lord of the rings trilogy. The Fellowship of the Ring, where Aragon was passing through with the hobbit right before Frodo was stabbed in the shoulder.
No, they didn't, because they watched the theatrical cut. That scene is only in the extended edition.
8:05 I love this continuity so much 😭
the ending as well!
We appreciate the extended version! You will not regret it!
I remember when I watched this movie for the first time, amazing memories..
Thorin just got that smoldering intensity.
The next two movies are epic beyond words. U cant even imagine.
YAAYYY FINALLY! Thank you for this CinePals
I love the fact that the entire scene with the trolls doesn't really need to be in the movie, but in the books it was one of, if not the first page (except for the map at the front), to have illustrated pages, so it's highly memorable for all the readers of the book.
This trilogy is just like Bilbo said in The Lord of the Rings. Feels like butter spread over too much bread. Such a drop in quality from TLotR.
Mountains out here playing rockem sockem robots
Hobbits in general are known for not to be seen easy, if not moving in shadows or else they're hard to spot at all.
The Elves are seen as wise, but I've just thought of the reason. They're immortal. What better way to pass the peace times, learning and studying the world around you, it's history, and it's lore. You'd develop a very wide range of skills over the course of your life.
8:08 that scene was before bilbo's birthday from Lord Of The Rings.. Frodo was reading the book when Gandalf arrived
