I'm studying mechatronics engineering. I take classes of Electronics engineering, Mechanical engineering, Computer Science, Automation and Robotics engineering.
Electrician here wondering if this would be a good field to get into, unless I specialised in this I doubt it would be profitable for me? Is there a demand and where so? Thanks
I got my degree in Mechatronics from the University of New South Wales in 1993. As time goes, this subject tend to be sunk into its small components while obscuring the general purpose of the subject just like Automatic Control got sunk in Mathematics starting in the late 1980s. I want to stress that "Mechatronics is about generation and control of various mechanical motions using electronics principles to achieve specific functional objectives." It has only three main components: (a) motion generation and transmission (Actuators, mechanical links and transission systems like gear systems, belt system etc), (b) motion control (Sensors, Control Algorithms, and control electronics), and (c) integration of those two components to achieve specific applications (Robotics and Automation, etc) . It just happens that motion control involves many players including algorithm development, Artificial intelligence, microprocessors, analog and digital electronics, and so many others that bring in computer science and computer engineering as part of motion control. Defining it to be an intersection of just Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and Electronics only is misleading. Electrical Engineering- i.e. electrical machines (that is not Electronics) is part of motion generation for example but it gets thrown out, Chemical Engineering, Power generation and Manufacturing Engineering, for example, are parts of applications that also get thrown away by this definition. Not every intelligent computer based solution is a Mechatronic solution unless it involves some kind of motion, intelligent decision support systems are not part of mechatronics unless they are involved in controlling motion. For example, Aple's Siri is not a mechatronic solution although "she" is artificially intelligent, but when "she" is integrated in a control system for an automonous vehicle, then the whole system becomes a mechatronic solution.
@@tobertbruh8660 No, we don't learn of how to make a mobile phone, but we learn the concepts. As we know, there's processor in of the phone, of course in our PC as well. We learn about the concept of microprocessor and how to control system with it. But Mechatronics is more about mechanics, the system must have the mechanics, example some of great company must have some machines to control the process, to make the product. I have always thought so Without this clarity, a possible interpretation could be a mechatronics engineer is adequately prepared to invent, design and build computers, which is not exactly the case. Conversely, without the clarity you have set, I could claim to be a mechatronics engineer to the extent, I can design certain types of robotic systems which of course is of course driven by a combination of mechanical, electronics and computer science principles.
