Turning 600mm Steel Ring into Excavator Final Drive Motor part | Machining & milling

  • This video is a job we did of turning a large 600mm diameter steel plate ring into a final drive floating seal carrier for a Hitachi EX1900 mining excavator final drive motor. We are using our TM-26120G centre lathe and BM-63VE milling machine. The shop made "Go Go gadget extendo jaws", Kurtis made for jobs just like this that have a large diameter but need full access to the internal diameter for machining.

Ah this was for the final drive I was rebuilding. The old ring was well and truly rusted in and bent trying to get it out. I suggested getting a new one made. Nice work.

One of the most rewarding things about this craft is that you take a piece of ugly rusted rough steel and when you are finished , it is a shiny, precise, beautiful piece that is useful. That is something to be proud of.I did this type of work for over 50 years. I would really like it when a customer would return with more work, and give positive feedback on the last job. It seems to me that you know what you are doing because you do it similar to the way I would do it.
Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming. I really enjoy them.

this is amazing work and is so needed. I've noticed some remarks on other videos that it's cheaper for you'll to make the part and it's faster than ordering an original part from the manufacturer of the machine needing the repair. Very interesting!!! Keep it up as these videos are very enlightening and entertaining. So much skill in this shop, thank you!!!

Looks like he made a PCD scratch mark while it was in the lathe...and then I'm guessing he used a pair of dividers to get the correct spacing between holes...(there's a formula in the 'engineering black book' to get the correct spacing)....then used a centre punch and centre drill etc etc.

    • @wizrom3046

@@brendan0loughlin419 probably used a DRO on the mill? You tell it the number of holes and it gives you the coordinates. It's probably the best feature of a DRO on a XY mill.

@@wizrom3046 judging by the way he has his blocks and clamps set up , I don't think he's using that method.i believe that the work piece is probably too big for that mill to drill the holes in one set up.

    • @brendan0loughlin419
      @brendan0loughlin419 2 роки тому

He may also be using an old work piece as a template to mark out hole locations.its not obvious weather he is working from a drawing or reverse engineering from an old work piece.

      @@brendan0loughlin419 you might be right.
We can see the workspace is not big enough for one DRO circle setup, but all you need are two fixed clamps, then the job can be rotated after doing a few holes.
You use the DRO hole circle function, drill some of the holes, then rotate the job pressed against the 2 fixed reference points (which keeps it circular aligned). Then align the job with the quill and endmill in the last hole, and repeat. Thats how I would have done it.

When the part just clears the ways by .060 or .030 and a nice workable TQ100 flame cut plate awaits it's rebirth into a beautiful new piece to get a piece of machinery back in motion is sooooo satisfying. Just can't be beat. Love the jaw extensions. Thanks folks, this is just great !

    Nice work Kurtis.
This part reminds me of something i was looking to manufacture.
Very similar in size but the price vs volume sort of killed the job.
As you know customers want prices down with more volume.
By the time i purchased the material plus machining.
I think it worked out i would be making around $ 20 per hour ????
I will try to find a pic and post it of Insta to give you some idea of what the part looked like.
I think i might have mentioned this part to you before ??
But anyway i will post the pic to show you anyway.
Making one like this one would be more profitable for sure.
Thanks for posting video,s of your work always good to see what your up to.

I love the videos and the work you do. I took Metal Shop in High school in the late 1970s and have always loved the smell and the sounds associated with it. I'm a Biomedical/Forensic Photographer, so I know very little about what you do, and I find it fascinating. I always have a lot of questions, but I'm not even sure of what questions to ask or how to ask them. I know some of the terminology and parts of the lathe, and that's about it. The music that is added to these videos makes me want to do bad things to myself and anyone near me. I guess you couldn't use any Rick Astley due to copyright laws. Lol! "Never gonna give you up!" Just kidding. You're singing it in your head right now, aren't you? Lol! It's just annoying to me, and I know it's my problem, but I'm just offering my opinion. I know how to work the mute button, and I will continue to watch, regardless.

My dad was Captain in charge of training and to maintain the equipment on the Chula Vista fire dept for 33 years. I remember when one of the fire trucks puked a water pump, it was a Waukasha inline six gasoline motor that had been out of production and there was no replacement pump available, so he and I cast the body out of aluminum and cast an impeller and machined it on his home built milling machine, He retired in 1985 and passed away 6 years ago. I have talked to several Chula Vista firefighters and they ALL knew his name and who he was, a profound legacy.

Good job, but in my opinion, with rough roughing - like in the last video - too little removed at once. Removing the outer layer at once protects the turning tool more from wear out. 8-10 millimeters depending on the material on the diameter should not be a problem with this machine. Hey, this is a damn stable machine, use it to produce real chips, let it smoke mate...

Your videos are WAY better when you narrate. Much more interesting when you discuss setup and purpose.
