Repairing Parts for 2000HP Engine! | Machining & Liquid Nitrogen

- We need to repair a pallet of parts for a 2000HP Caterpillar 3516 Diesel Engine. These are some of the exhaust components from the engine that came out of a CAT 789 Haul Truck. The parts are made from cast iron and over time they have worn out. We show the step by step process to repair the exhaust parts including machining in the lathe, boring in the milling machine and shrink fitting new sleeves using Liquid Nitrogen. We're going to give those sleeves a 0.2mm (8 thou) tight interference fit because we definitely don't want them getting out and into the engine!

I enjoy the “intros” where you explain how the parts fit in the machines, and then the how and why you’ve chosen a particular repair method. Then it makes much more sense when you do the actual repairs.
the knowledge Kurtis has to repair so many different components that cover a myriad of machines is incredibly impressive!
He's by no means unintelligent but I would like to know how much of this information the actually retains versus how much he goes research before each video. That's not to say however that he does not have a wealth of knowledge in his head but there's a lot of small details he provides that leads me to believe he does some researching to make the videos more informative

Ummmm.......id have to heavily disagree....yes this channel is up there but there are many many more whom are at the same level and ABOVE....all over youtube! Are you blind....or have you not looked at all? There quite easy to find also!
My insomnia has been in overdrive lately but I have been working through older CEE videos and rewatching more recent ones and for some reason metal work and welding noises have been a huge help in turning off my brain to let me sleep. The only problem is I love watching the videos so much that sometimes I get caught up in watching and it keeps me awake :)

I had the pleasure of working with the welders and other professional shipbuilders in the 1980’s as a US Naval submariner. As the first crew to go to sea on the Trident class we all took great pride in our work. I would have been proud to have you work beside us my friend. Does my head in as a non hands on the tools guy, is how fine tolerances can be created as a matter of course. It is amazing how fine things can be made up without any 'special' gear. Although do appreciate that the gear isn't cheap, and the skill required to drive it isn't cheap either!

To the average person seeing these parts you would be confused as hell and just order new components all because of ignorance.
Having been in a machine shop and working with these machines in a machine shop where it was mainly a tool and die shop from 84 to 90 because of a car accident and not being able to stand for long periods of time I can say that this was done superbly. I have seen amazing things beginning from a drawing on a piece of paper become incredible parts right before my eyes.
You set up your shop real nice over the years. Having to walk a few steps to the lathe instead of across the entire shop really makes a huge difference.
I love watching your videos each week. It reminds me of one of the two things I absolutely love as a job . The other was automotive mechanics.
Icing with chronic lower back pain I miss it every day. If only.
I just hope Cat does not come knocking on your door for some copyright infringement BS. from modifying their parts.
These huge companies just love to stick their noses into other peoples businesses just to make your life miserable.

The sheer amount of wear and tear these parts experience is pretty nuts. The enginuity of the human mind is amazing, but to be able to fix these components is even more incredible. Love the attention to detail and care in the small things. Once again thank you for sharing with us weekly and keep up the good work. I wouldn't be surprised if an engine came in next :
Yes. As he fixes these pieces I can't help but think of them at work routing the exhaust of a 2000hp Diesel engine 16 hours a day, months on end. I imagine the endless heat, stress, and vibration. Yet they handle it because they were made right.
I used to work for Deimler/MTU/Detroit Diesel for 25 years(until 2018). Alot of the large MTU marine engines(and smaller truck engines) had steel rings that you could replace for a better seal. I'm surprise CAT still uses that interference fit like that. Thats what older Detroits used years ago when I was just starting out in the 90s(the engines were from the 70 and 80s)
The 3516 is quite an old engine - it began production 1996 or before. the 35xx and 34xx series predate the current C-series.
@Keit Hammleter The first 3500 series engine rolled off the line in 1981. Fundamentally, it hasn't changed much. The fuel system has been the biggest change.
They were using steel insert rings on some of those turbo discharge tubes even back in the 60's. Some engines got them, some didn't.
@@typrus6377 the 3500 and 3400 series were my absolute favorites when i worked at CAT many moons ago. I in-framed more 3500's in tugs then i care to remember. The 3500 was just so epic in its simplicity. And they just freakin RAN. Forever.

@Patrick Gordon I still work on both series on occasion. The 3500 may be old and simple, but there is a reason that it hasn't hardly changed. Same for the 3400- the C15 is basically a 3406. The C18 is basically a 3456. The C27 is basically a 3412. The C32 is basically analogous to the C18 vs C15, just V12. All 4 still installed in brand new machines, EPG, Pumps, etc. If it weren't for the Aftertreatment hoo-hah, they'd last as long if not longer than the old 3406E.

I just figured out why I like your videos. Once you get past the explanation and we get to see your workflow, it becomes apparent how many decisions you are making all the time. The confidence in your ability makes it look easy.

The example of a marine 3516 you used is actually a pic of my engine room on the tug boat I operate based out of Seattle, Wa sailing back and forth to Alaska! Pretty awesome to see in the vid

Love the outtakes; part & parcel of why I love UA-cam. Even channels that do script their content are far more casual & human, often creatively incorporating that humanity in their content.
Nice explantation of proper rebuilding of a used part. Also, editing is very dynamic on this, shows multiple perspectives, weaves the story together nicely.
Good to know that sleeving these is an accepted option. I have a few cast iron bits and was considering building them up with braze, but this is much, much easier.

Would be cool to see finished parts in action. You are clearly an extremely skilled person in your craft and I have no doubt that these parts work but it would still be cool to maybe interview the mechanic who had to install them.

Cast iron is one of my least favorite metals to machine.The graphite dust is probably the worst part. I wear a dust mask while machining and cleanup.Another great job,Kurtis

Congratulations on the 500k subs! I used to watch Abom79 for heavy machine work, but he's just a playboy now with a bunch of shiny stuff sitting around. You are my #1 go to for heavy machine content and I like the way you guys put this together for video. Please don't fall to the dark side like so many of these creators on here do. I would say you will be close to 1m subs by the end of year if you keep it up. I have repaired some of those exhaust parts like you did there. They were for a D9 Cat and the diffusor where it fit into the turbo had those expansion rings like the ones you were doing. I did the sleeving like you made up for your repair and it worked nicely. Keep up the good work and we'll see you on the next one!
always interesting how cast iron throws different chips
Cast iron is basically large grains of iron stuck together so when machining it mostly comes off as grains popped out of the surface.
Can you add into your videos your trips to the shops….like your parts runs or hardware store or parts dealer outings…it would be great to see Curtis out in the wild and would add another dimension to the episodes how you get your materials orders or parts shopping and day to day outside the shop
Watching the manifold swinging around on the lathe gave me the willies, but I guess you have that sort of thing under control. Color me impressed, as usual...

.2 interference sounds hard to do with just a fire extinguisher in the bush. I/we never I am still finding posts from you two after all this time. I blame it on UA-cam not advertising the ones we used to get notice of in our emails. Refits like this will likely be the last these pieces will ever need as long as they are aware they do need a bit of care being the 2 different metals involved. A dialectic grease on assembling will help that situation for thousands of hours in that application. I admit the piston ring seal is a good idea initianaly but I see they have had the two metals bind with each other and just plain not a long term repair. My hat's off to the one that thought about making that happen.Kudo's to your Karen for the great footage and editing. You two have a video nailed.
I had an artist come into my corner in the shop wanting the long, endless chips like these. It was weeks later she came in and showed me a mountain setting, framed picture with the various coils. One day she stopped coming and of course I didn't have one of her pieces. She had them sandwiched between glas panes so they wouldn't cut every finger they encountered. She was a master at getting them apart in the barrel. Take care you two, I hope this week is a winner for both of you.
I once tried to install one of those engines in a Chevy Nova ...
Back in reality, I was quite impressed with this refurbishment.

Many people have never seen a small block V-8 and here is 4-turbo diesel. 2000hp. The shrink sleeve was great to see. I think the Most Spoilt Dog is the smallest thing come in the doors of your shop. And the cutest.
All the explanations by Curtis shows his massive knowledge of the machines for which the parts are for as well.

Hi Kurtis...congrats on the 500K. Your content is consistently interesting. With such a wide range of jobs, is there a "standard" way of doing each job or do you have to plan each job considering what you need to achieve? The range of processes is amazing.
there's definitely a plan for each job, even a part that's the same as one I've already done could throw a curve ball and need a different setup or repair.

Heard the bird and I thought George had brought the kids 'round to see Gramma and Gramps... realized quickly it was a crow. Ah well, you can't depend on kids these days to visit when they should!
After the shrink-fitted sleeves, this engine can be repaired next time with just cutting off the old sleeves and putting new on... something Cat should've caught when this engine series came online about 1980. But this way, Cat sells more expensive parts, I guess.
