  • Twin baby elephants were born on October 24, 2022, at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, N.Y. The two 220 plus pound Asian elephants sauntered about, often bumping into mom's tree-trunk legs exploring the world and occasionally reaching up for milk to the fawning giggling crowd surrounding them.

Wow I was just at this zoo Halloween weekend, I didn't even realize an elephant was pregnant! So cute, they will be well taken care of at this zoo. The elephant area has two extremely large outdoor enclosures (one far away from walking paths where people watch them) , another large indoor enclosure, barns/rest area, and a veterinary suite on site.

It is VERY Rare, only 1% of elephant births result in twins and over 80% of twin births do not come to term. Usually either one twin passes before birth or the Mother passes due to exhaustion or complications. These two healthy, full term babies are remarkable! Especially with BOTH babies weighing over 220lbs EACH at birth, and Mom is doing well too! 🙏🙏🏿🙏🏼

I watched another video of these twins that included a long detailed description (channel name ZooBorns), and it said even though they weren't expecting twins (ultrasounds on elephants aren't too practical and I guess they didn't hear two heartbeats), they were prepared with specialized formula they'd received before the delivery just incase it was needed for some reason. It said the second baby gets supplemented with that, maybe because he was weaker at birth even though he weighed more. Btw, it also said they'll be doing DNA testing to see if they are identical, for breeding program reasons. Also the mother's placentas are being studied to develop a treatment and vaccine for a lethal strain of herpes that is the leading cause of death in young elephants, including this mother's two previous calves. They think the virus naturally occurs in elephants in a dormant form and becomes active without warning. I've heard of koalas and chlamydia, but never lethal elephant herpes... like they really need one more thing threatening their existence, ugh..... :(
Pretty sure if there were two placentas, that means two amniotic sacs and the twins brothers are fraternal, not identical, but maybe they still share enough DNA that for breeding program purposes they might as well be identical.

Rosmond Gifford zoo in syracuse ny. They are a pretty small zoo aside from the elephant area which is huge and about 1/4 of the entire zoo.

Omgosh, These Animals Should be in A Sanctuary!! How Do We Save These Poor Creatures, So, So Sad!!! 🐘💗 How Can You say, You Take Care of Them, When They Live with, No Room at All?? We Should be Ashamed of Ourselves, to Permit This to Continue!!! People, Visiting @the Zoo, Screaming at Them, All Day Long, How Would You Like It? The Elephant is A Magnificent & Beautiful Creature & They Need to be Treated with So Much Respect & Love, Putting Them in a Zoo, You are Not Helping Them, @ All. I'd Hate to See Their Sleeping Conditions. They Need to Run, To Play, To Swim in Rivers, to Only Eat Certain Grasses to Survive!! They're Extremely Intelligent, One of the Most Loving Creatures on Earth, They Mourn the Loss of a Loved One, Forever & Shed Real Tears. They're So Very Emotional, So Anything that Goes Against Their Natural Way of Living is Very Detrimental to Their Health. Riding Them is A Complete 💯% Falsehood, A BIG-NO & It Will Eventually, Handicap Them for Life or Worse, It Will, Kill Them!! Please Call-Elephant Nature Park or Save the Elephants, Sheldrick Trust There are Many More Too. There are People Who Will Give A Lot of Money to Help with Their Transfer to A Normal Environment!!! Please, Ask Around, for Phone Numbers, Do Your Part, Do You Know How Good You'll Feel? If You Help to Put Them in Their Own Habitat? There's A Mom for the Twins & There's Always A Nanny, to Help Her, A Herd for Life, They Never Seperate!! Why A Desperately Needed Nanny, bc the Mom, Will Get So Tired & Worn Out, that She Could Become Very Sick. 😢 It's Not Even Possible, for Her o Take Care of Twins by Herself. Quit Thinking about Money, Go Grab a Book about Elephants, Please Start Reading & Then Contact the Sanctuaries , Many Organizations that Can Help, As Soon As Possible!! They Can Give So Much Needed Information, if You Need Help!! Bless & Thank-You!! You Will be A True Elephant & Nature Warrior for Your Live, Care & Concern!! 🐘"SAVE THE ELEPHANTS"💖

No way they can be moved to ENP, even by Lek. But I think there is a large sanctuary in Tennessee, which is feasible. An ellie from the Toronto zoo was trucked there successfully a while ago. Newborns & mom should never be subjected to crowds of shouting onlookers. How can the staff not know such basics? Where is the vet??

All of you should educate yourselves a little on this zoo's elephant set-up and breeding program before spouting off all your ASSumptions. Look for a video about these twins on a channel called ZooBorns, and READ the entire long and detailed video description, especially the second half. And there are comments on both videos by people who've been there, and they say these elephants have a very nice and large enclosure including an area away from walking paths and people. Btw, I'd be interested in hearing your to responses then.

Why Do You Capitalize Every Word?? It’s Bizarre And Annoying To Read, & Isn’t It Annoying To TYPE??

@@beckysmith2632 My thoughts exactly! Why do some people do that? It bugs me when people Capitalize random Words they think are important (Trump does this all the time, ugh), but Every Single Word Is Even More Annoying! :P
