This is the closest recipe I have found to my mom's! She passed away 5 years ago & never wrote her recipes down. When we would ask her she wouldn't know the amounts of anything just " a little bit of this & that " . I'm excited to try this & have that taste again.

My Oma was really my Mom's oma. She passed away when I was two, but I grew up with a blanket she made me, and was told my Oma would always watch over me, and loved me dearly. My mother passed away at the start of the pandemic, and I've been lost without her. I've been trying to recreate dishes I remember her making me as a boy, that she learned from her Oma. When you came on screen I had an immediate emotional reaction I wasn't expecting. I'm a 32 year old man, and watched this with tears in my eyes. Thank you for this gift.

I use to work for a small bistro called Café Vienna, it was a quaint old style bistro run by a mother & daughter of European decent. These Roulades where famous & very tasty, I only made these once before but without the gravy, they where rubbed with oil & seasoning & put in a braising pan with home made beef stock as well, served with mashed Potatoes or Spätzle & Sauerkraut. Glad I saw this today cause I have been thinking of them for sometime & would love to make them again. Thanks for sharing & bring back a few memories.

I had 10 guests over last night in our heated garage, for a new traditional Christmas dinner. Red cabbage, cinnamon apples, potato dumplings, fresh crusty bread, and center stage was Rouladen, using Oma's recipe, modified to suit our crowd. All of the items were never before made, and all turned out fantastic. Thank you for sharing and making this dinner a success!

This takes me back. Grew up on German style food but my mother never made Rouladen. Learned it from a German friend in the early 1960s. She used just mustard, onion, and pickle inside. Maybe bacon. Oma's recipe is so much better! I also shake my flour-water mixture. Adding cold water to the pan before pouring in the flour mixture is new to me; will try it. Never too old to learn: I'm 77. Danke.

I love re-watching these old videos. I found some of those Tupperware shakers on eBay, I’m going to buy one and fill it with salt black pepper celery salt and garlic powder and call it Oma seasoning. Today I made her famous iceberg salad and vinaigrette and it was a hit. I hope you are doing well Oma (and family) you are very special to many people like me who miss their Oma. ❤️

My Oma never used carrots, so this is new for me. She didn't chop the bacon up either. She wrapped pickles in the bacon strips and then she put the spices, onions and mustard and wrapped the steak around all. So delicious! I want to try it this way too now!

Not only do we enjoy Oma's sweet personality and spirit, we have recaptured a few of the old recipes we haven't had in years. What a legacy for future generations of your family as well, who will get to know their Oma a bit as well. Enjoy every precious moment you have with her - and thanks!

Thank you Oma for sharing your wonderful German dishes that are absolutely "yummy". My mum and Oma have cooked them for us and we grew up with the truly marvellous dishes that you prepare in your super presentations. I was very young when my Oma passed away but she taught my mum how to cook and bake. Mum passed away last year along with the knowledge that kept an endless supply of traditional food when we called on her. Thank you Oma for the lessons I should have learned by watching our mum. Your accent and voice is so like hers and your warm personality too!

Love love love rouladen. My mother is from Germany and she made this often when we were kids. I finally got to make it with her for Christmas this past year. The only thing different is we don't chop the veggies and we don't use carrots or celery. We only use mustard, bacon, gherken pickles, and we add pepperoni (a good pepperoni stick, not cheap sliced pepperoni) to it. We thinly slice the veggies and layer them to make it easier to roll. We have never used celery seed before. I'll definitely have to add that next time we make them. And Maggi makes everything taste better. I just started watching your moms videos, and I love watching Oma. Her nightgown/robe reminds me of my mother now. Rouladen with spätzle is divine. After boiling the spätzle, we add it to a baking pan with butter and mix in shredded Swiss cheese and then add a layer on top and bake it. That is the best way to eat spätzle to me. Please tell Oma thank you for teaching us German food. She is awesome.

Dear Oma A German friend of mine told me how to make Rouladen many many years ago. She used just mustard, onion & dill pickles inside of hers. I tried it at home and it was dry and not very good. I think your long simmering of them must be the key. I also prefer your extra ingredients inside the Rouladen. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. All the best !

Das war sehr gut! My mouth is watering. Oma your recipe is very close to that of my late mother Frida who was Sudetendeutsch and taught me how to make them. It was always my favourite. She served it with kartoffelknodel (homemade potato dumplings) and red cabbage sauerkraut. I cheat a little and use gnocchi, because the potato dumplings are a bit tricky. My father would eat at least ten of the dumplings! Bless your heart und vielen Dank for reminding us all that food should be cooked with love!

Mmmm...love Rouladen. Haven't made it in ages, going to give this recipe a try. Made Oma's Kartoffel soup the other day and it was yummy. Love all the recipes and videos, definately will be cooking many more of these dishes. You're such a sweety, Oma! Hugs...

Thank you Oma it took me back to grandmas house and making German food with her. I learned many dished and this was one of them. I will be making this with potato dumplings and cabbage and sausage for some German friends who are returning home from Mexico. I made German sauerkraut for them last week and they were thrilled. It beats tacos for sure. You even remind me of grandma and I miss her. Thank you

Oma reminds me very much of my Grandmother. The mannerisms are so similar, especially that little exchange at 8:50. We had many laughs together.
